My wife and I ate at Rick's on the Square in Tyler today. The food and service were great, but it turns out they have a very realistic large painting of a completely nude woman in the men's room (seductively posed, leaving nothing to the imagination).  The bar area is also full of almost nude pin-up model images.

I spoke with the owner, Rick, and told him about the great food and dining experience I also mentioned that the painting in the men's room was objectionable to me, and that prevented me from wanting to come back, especially with regard to bringing my kids.  (The food and service really are excellent!)

He kept a smile on his face, but cut me off and gave me a few very snarky responses including:

    - "That painting has been here a long time"
    - "This is a bar after all" (Except that over half of it is a restaurant, and there are plenty of restaurants that have bars and don't have blatantly pornographic images in them)
    - "Just use the restroom before you come next time"

Not that I expected him to actually take the painting down, but he clearly had no concern for my thoughts about the matter. I definitely got a "don't waste my time" vibe from him.

I should add that I couldn't have been nicer to him.  If he had responded with something along the lines of, "Thank you for your feedback.  We hope to see you again sometime", he would have at least come across more professional.  I didn't give him an ultimatum, or tell him he had to remove it.  I just told him this was my only critique about the restaurant.

I won't be eating there ever again.  Bummer.

*Edited to add that I would have given the food and service 5 stars.

This place has the best lunch in Tyler! The daily specials are made from scratch and are always great. Friday and Saturday nights offer great bands and a fun crowded atmosphere that is one of the best in Tyler. The dinner menu is also very good, great date spot for a nice meal and a little fun after!

Great food. I went on lunch earlier in the day, then went back for dinner. I like the atmosphere. It seems lunch during the week is more of the busy time. I had the prime rib sandwich for lunch and a grill chicken caesar with a small tequila lime chicken soup. Great place and will be back!

It's labelled as "nightlife," but I've only ever been for lunch--and what a tasty lunch it was!

I had a cup of some kind of seafood bisque that made me forget I was in woefully unseafoody Tyler for a second. My sandwich was perfectly piled with tons of meat between two flavorful marbled slices of rye. Our waiter was a bit quiet, like a waiter-ninja--hard to hear but eager to bring me enough mayonnaise to satisfy my appetite for the best condiment ever invented.

The interior is a bit dark and can get a little noisy, but it's cozy. It's an old building with lots of cool woodwork. Rick's is not just for nighttime--it's great for lunch, too!

A real restaurant out here in the boonies that makes you wonder if you are really in Tyler, Texas!  With properly shaken martinis served in chilled martini glasses and everything!  Rockin' appetizer menu at dinner, and if you're lucky, a rockin' band afterwards.  Perfectly civilized lunch menu at about the same price you would pay for a below average lunch elsewhere.  A fantastic break from bbq, tex mex and home cookin'.

Such a cute place in downtown Tyler. The guys at the door were EXTRA friendly and inviting. There was a $5 cover, and I'm not a huge fan of covers, but I was glad to have paid once we were inside. There is indoor and outdoor seating. We sat outside on the patio. Plenty of seating facing the stage for the live music. The waitstaff was quick on their feet and very pleasant. The drinks were good, not too strong, not too weak. The band was excellent and at a good volume. I still could talk to my date and not have to strain to talk or hear him. You could come dressed any way you pleased it seemed jeans or dresses were both acceptable. Very enjoyable time.

Rick's has some of the best food in Texas and the atmosphere is always great. It is my favorite place for lunch. Rick makes sure that customers are taken care of and the staff is always professional, friendly and knowledgable. It is always a sure bet.

Normally my wife and I visit in the mid-afternoon, the lunch menu is a great deal!  The food is wonderful, forget about desert you will be too full, but I buy it anyway to bring home.  Cakes are made fresh on site...the wait staff and everyone involved with Rick's are wonderful.  The crowd that visits are fun and all ages.  Suits and jeans...with the soft sounds of blues.  I'm sending Rick my gym bill...he has made me gain so much wonderful weight!
