The first place I ever tasted mussels from and OMG I'm hooked now!

Love this place.  Depending on the night you go, you can find a live band.  The staff was excellent.  The waitress even participated in our playful banter as we watched the Knicks game on the big screen.  Go here when it's warm and walk along the pier (very similar to City Island).

Haven't been since right before Hurrican Sandy and I heard they were closed due to damage.  Hope they're open now.

There is actually a second listing on yelp for "Riverhouse grill" which has somewhat better reviews. This is what initially lured me in, so now I'm a little surprised to see  the lower ratings.  In any case, I thought the restaurant wasn't bad. Yes the food is over priced but that's the Nautical mile for you. I think only Jeremy's Ale House has cheap prices but there you get cheese whiz fries. Yikes.

Unfortunately, the outside seating wasn't available so we got a table inside. The place itself is elegant and clean, with dark wood and dim lighting.  It has a decent upscale but casual vibe to it.  My server looked like he was high as blimp, but to his credit he did a decent job.

The bread and seasoned oil they serve was nothing special but after consuming alcohol earlier in the evening  any sort of bread hits the spot. The calamari was good- crispy and not too rubbery and the sauce was OK.  For our meals I got the shrimp and scallop risotto while my lady got the lobster ravioli. Nothing wowed us but we both enjoyed our meals. Again, prob not worth the price but still a decent meal.

We both left full but it didn't sit too well in our stomachs after-wards. I liked it, but prob wouldn't come back.

We decided to go to this place DESPITE the bad reviews; oh, well ... Once again, Yelp rules :) the reviews were absolutely right: the food is WAY less than  average, I couldn't even eat my main course (i just took 1 bite), it was really bad. Also, their "specials" menu doesn't have prices on it, so guess what ... If an average entre is about $30, the "specials" entrees were $55-60, a very touriste thing to do. Simply disgusting. I def learned to trust Yelp from now on. I don't know how this type of restaurants stay in business...

Lovely view, disappointing dinner.  We were lured in for the Thursday lobster special, which is no special at all, and don't order it expecting a lobster/clambake.  It is not, and it is ridiculously expensive.  Be careful if you sit out back, beautiful scenery & very tiny tables.  Do not order the risotto - it was dry and tasteless.  But the staff is friendly and efficient.  Check out my profile to see more of my reviews!

Wait staff was just ok. We had to constantly ask for water refills on a hot day. They checked on us infrequently and the used dishes hung out in front of us even though there we're plenty of staff on a slow weekend afternoon.
The food was definately the redeeming quality. The salmon burger was perfectly cooked and delicious. All other food and drink were similarly very well executed.

came here a few times before, but the visits were never memorable.

i came here for dessert a few nights ago. it's a great place to sit out doors in the nice weather, but that's about it.

my boyfriend ordered apple crumb cake a la mode.  the portion was SO small, the tiniest slither of cake accompanied by a HUGE pile of vanilla ice cream. very odd. usually you run out of ice cream and need more for the cake, but it was the other way around.  it tasted good but definitely wasn't worth the price.

for my dessert i got the river house grille ice cream sandwich. it sounded like a good idea: vanilla ice cream sandwiched between two warm brownies coated with powdered sugar. i was disappointed, it was alright. the brownies were definitely not fresh, they tasted a bit stale as if they had been reheated after sitting around all day.

ontop of that, it was dead and service was slow.

    i probably wouldn't go again.

Went here for lunch and I wasn't terribly impressed.

The atmosphere is wonderful, don't get me wrong. I loved sitting on the patio and enjoying the sunshine. The inside decor is terribly mediocre. It needs a bit of a facelift. However, there were many pitfalls to this restaurant.

Firstly, the cocktail I ordered was absolutely disgusting. I ordered a baybreeze, after asking the waiter for suggestions but not being informed there was in fact a cocktail menu. It tasted like cranberry and vodka. It was awful.

Also, the water was unenthusiastic and, clearly, ill informed. Not mentioning the cocktail menu was stupid but getting my order wrong was even worse. Maybe he just wasn't listening to me, I really don't know. Regardless, he was offensive and a terrible waiter.. especially for a man of around 40 whose clearly been a waiter for a while.

Finally, when my food came, I really didn't enjoy it. I ordered a house salad and mussels and white wine sauce. The salad was average and exactly what you would expect for a simple house salad. The mussels tasted extremely fishy and were rubbery. Not good for a SEAFOOD restaurant on the NAUTICAL mile. My boyfriend, however, did enjoy the ribs he ordered.. which is the reason they're not getting 1 star.

In the past I have never been so let down by this restaurant. This experience will most likely keep me from going back.

Went to this restaurant with my chick and some family. I've read the other reviews and while I mostly agree with them, I had to give it a three star rating because of the linguine with white clam sauce. First things first, got the fried calamari, which was OK. Then the main course, I don't know if the moons aligned or I was just the lucky recipient of a rare, good dish at this place, but my linguine with white clam sauce was quite tasty. Definitely prepared differently, but it was good. However, the other reviewers are dead on - the prices are insane for good food, there is an odd odor (not seafood) and the wait staff, oh man the wait staff. The waiter came to the table once during the entire time I was eating. I never got my drink refilled (sucks for me and them) and my chick actually had to get up and get a spoon cause we couldn't find a waiter. Friggin insane. Service just sucks. The menu isn't very extensive and yes, as noted, they run out of some of the items. My experience appears to be the exception, not the rule - dine at your own risk.

My husband and I went to the Nautical mile on Saturday night and stopped at this restaurant....biggest mistake of the night.   From the outside the place looked pretty decent but upon entering there was an odor, I thought it might be  a sea odor since we were right near the ocean but after my complete experience this odor should have been the first clue not to eat in this restaurant.

The second thing I did not like about this restaurant was that both the drink menu and the special menu came without prices and by the looks of the regular menu you could only assume that was because they were extremely high.  Plus they have no draft beer, another negative.

The only thing that I actually liked was the bread with the seasoned olive oil but the bus boy actually tried to take it away as we were still eating it.

When we finally decided to order the chilean sea bass with lobster risotto from the special menu we were told that they didn't have that tonight.  How about giving us this information before we looked at the menus or not giving us a menu with an item they did not have that night!!!!  This was the most appealing item on both menus and the only other whitefish other than a coconut crusted tilapia on the entire menu which did not sound appealing.  I actually wanted to finish my drink and leave after that but husband was hungry so we decided to stay anyway.

We ended up ordering stuffed clams as an appetizer which were supposed to be whole but came out chopped.  I think we actually ended up with clams casino instead of the special we ordered but it tasted okay so we just ate them.

For the main meal we ordered shrimp scampi and 2 appetizers-crab cake and fried artichoke hearts.   The shrimp scampi tasted nothing like a scampi, it was basically lemon shrimp, edible but not shrimp scampi by definition and definitely not worth the $28 dollar price tag.  The crab cake was basically stuffing, I could not taste or find a piece of crab in it and the fried artichoke hearts were unseasoned and bland.  The best part of the main meal was the salad that came along side the artichoke hearts.

The service was lacking, for a restaurant that was not crowded by any means the wait staff was inattentive and not too friendly.  When the bus boy was clearing our plates I asked for another wine and was told that I had to ask the waiter and then he left, without even telling our waiter I needed another drink.  At the end of service my husband paid by credit card and after the waiter completed the transaction he just dropped the receipt on our table and left, not even a have a nice night.

This restaurant was overpriced, served low quality food and the customer service was non-existent.

The best part of all was about 3 hours after I arrived home I was sick with food poisoning all night.  Fever, chills, nausea and vomiting.

My recommendation is to find another place to eat unless you like low quality overpriced food and poor customer service with a dash of food poisoning.

I only gave this place one star because yep would not allow zero stars.

Possibly the worst restaurant experience I have ever had. The lobster bisque tasted funny, the stuffed clams had gone bad, and the stuffed lobster my boyfriend order came out without anything in it. It looked old, and they sent it back out a few seconds later which makes me wonder where that seafood stuffing was. Only time in my life I walked out of a restaurant. Talked to the manager, explained why we were leaving. The response, "You still have to buy for your drinks." So we paid for a half-empty beer, unzipped ice-tea, left a tip for the waitress (who was fine), and NEVER looked back.

A good place to sit and drink, and take in the mile - but that is about it.

Sunday afternoon, after labor day - looked nice enough.
Lobster spring roll had obivously  be frozen - no flavor and soggy.  Scallops wrapped in bacon were ok but sweet potato mash that they were served with also had a weird after taste.

How do you screw up a grilled chicken ceasar salad?! Romaine was soggy, croutons were BOXED version (seriously!?), shaved parm was aged (not in the good way) and chewy and the grilled chicken was underflavored and overcooked.

Hamburger - also frozen. I'm surprised the tomato and onion were actually fresh.  Large cut french fries - soggy and no flavor.

Not going back for food - or drink.

I ate there last nite. When i walked in with a friend I walked towards the back to see if it had outdoor seating,  but more important, if it was near the bulkhead and if it was buggy out. The maitre D " sais in a snot tone "excuse me" can i help you, I told her I intended to see what the conditions  were outside . She mumbled well, you have to have someone seat you.  Like I had never eaten at a restaurant before, and had no table etiquette. She looked at me like I had walked into the River Cafe in a tee shirt!!  I simply didnt want to be eaten alive by gnats, Some places in freeport have outdoor bars  recessed back from the bulkhead, others are mosquito traps. Besides the rest rooms are back there anyway, and you can get a good look through the window. This woman can use a dose of ettiquette herself!!  Now for the food. raw clams and raw oysters which were dried, and obviousley opened and refrigerated in advance . plus the clams and oysters were still attached to the shell.   This is seafood 101 folks, not rocket science.  I don,t feel like bitting my clams off the shell when they are raw and dragging my teeth to clear the oysters from the shell.  then i had calamari. it was a translucent thin batter, and not crisp, but soggy.  The main course arrived 6 minutes after the appetizers.we had barely finished one clam each, at this point. The outdoor tables are tiny so there was no where to put the food, and the busboy was ready to clear the table of appetizers which we just got. It was a tuesday nite , so this is incompetence at best! Five minutes later they returned the same dinner plates with my entre of scallops and risotto,  It was good , in truth, but there were 5 medium scallops and 3 tablespoons or risotto, for 28.00   I give it one star for the waiter , who in all fairness was professional, and polite. Just because you have a restaurant on the water, doesn,t give you a free pass for mediocre food, or poor execution of standards at a restaurant  that charges higher prices.  Get in the game  guys. Theres more to winning games than simply owning a ball field!!!!  Theres lots of good seafood restaurants who do it better. i for one will not be returning!!

Visited the restaurant for the last time, whereas the service was horrific, with incapable staff, which only got worst when our food arrived. We ordered grilled salmon, what we got was pan seared salmon drained in butter.  Me being lactose intolerant, eating butter is suicide.

Terrible, terrible.  Don't go ever.  We went on Thursday for the lobster.  We ordered mussels to start.  They were very overcooked, mushy and totally tasteless .  We sent them back.  We ordered the lobsters broiled and when they arrived they were steamed.  We sent them back and they assured us they would be different lobsters.  They were the same lobsters which had then been broiled.  The shells were totally burnt to a crisp and the smell was awful.  The taste was even worse.  I didn't have any, but the others in my group said the bread was really good. So if you go, plan on having bread for dinner.

I see that there are a lot of bad reviews for this place, but I had a wonderful experience when I went. I went on a Saturday night with my husband. We really just went for desserts, drinks, and the live music. We were seated almost immediately, even though they were crowded. They offered us a choice of seats (one near the door and one near the band). I chose near the band since I didn't want to subject myself to the cold each time the door opened. It was pretty loud, but hey, what do you expect from live music? The band was really good and played jazz, blues and rock & roll. We had the crab cakes and the calamari, both of which were well cooked. The calamari wasn't too chewy nor was it too crispy. The crab cakes had a delightfully unique spice in it. For dessert, we shared cheesecake, which they actually do not make there. It was pretty rich. Not the best, but it was good. In short, what they make in their own kitchen was very delicious. It was also very reasonably priced.

Our waiter was incredibly attentive, and the manager himself came over to ask us if we wanted to switch tables because of the band. We told him we were okay and we never waited more than a few minutes for anything because our waiter seemed to know exactly when we needed him.

We will definitely enjoy another date night here :)

Visited here for the first time this past weekend.  I looked at the menu and paella caught my eye.  There were no prices on the menu; and when I asked what the cost was for this dish, I was told $47.  Wow.  I actually said that out loud and the waiter assured me it was a "huge" portion. so I thought that I would probably take most of it home.  No so.  The seafood in the dish was not good, clams were just "ok",  the shrimp were good, the two pieces of lobster were rubbery and not flavorful at all.  There were some pieces of chicken, not many, and they were small and dry.  Too much red sauce in the rice (red sauce in paella?)  With tax and tip, this meal cost me $61.  What a waste of money.  The dish was enough for one meal.  And even if I didn't finish it , I would not have taken it home.  I'll never go back there again.  I would not have minded paying this ridiculous amount if the meal was very good and plentiful.

Recommended by foodie friend to try lobster special. Raw clams seemed to have been opened well before we got there, agree with Terra W. Other apps were uniformly good to excellent. Entree portions huge, lobsters fine. Paella was so salty I can not believe the chef tasted it prior to sending it out. Desserts pedestrian, but great coffee. Not a DJ, but a singer who was actually very good, but, yes, too loud. With a little tweaking this could be a really good place to eat.

My stepson was in town in June, so we took him to the nautical mile.  Thought this would be a fun place.  It was myself, my husband, daughter and stepson.  It was pretty late, but some of us were hungry.  We decided to come to this place.  We were seated within 10 minutes, that was good.  The waiter, came over, and asked it we wanted drinks.  We all wanted water, and one beer.  That's when the attitude began.  It was time to order.  Two of us were hungry, so we ordered two things.  OMG, !
You would have thought we had a disease.  The food came.  The salmon dish was fine.  The hamburger platter  my daughter ordered was overcooked. (She asked for medium)  She started eating anyway thinking the waiter would stop by and ask if everything was ok.  He never did.  Oh yes, he passed us to serve others but he NEVER came to our table.
Finally I asked to see a manager.  He never came, the waiter came back at that time, and asked if she wanted another one.  Of course, by that time, we were so turned off.  My husband wanted another beer, but he never even came back to the table after that, except to drop the bill.  Maybe we wanted something else?
I later asked to speak to the owner again, and no one showed up.
We were so disgusted, we paid the bill, (left a $4.00) tip.  We should have not even left anything.
Here is the kicker!!!!!!  We got the Visa Bill and the jerk upped the tip to an even $5.00 tip.  We always keep our receipts to compare when we get the bill.  The nerve of that guy.  Immediately, I called Visa and disputed this.  Unfortunately, the only $ that could be disputed was the $1.00.  The food was already consumed.  It is the principal of this, that we disputed.  I would never go back, and if you do, you are crazy.

The Lobster special (2 for 1 on Thursdays) made us choose here. The Lobsters were good. The side of rice and veggies was okay. The restaurant was really busy, and the service not so great. Our table was messy for way too long and the drinks were not refilled until we asked, and either was the water. For the deal of the 2 for 1 it was worth the visit, but, I am not sure I would go back on a non-special night.

The bar was hopping, and the music loud. There was outdoor seating, maybe that would have been quieter.

I kinda wished the service was better so I could have enjoyed the meal more. Maybe I will try Steamer Tuesdays next time and give it one more chance.

I am perfectly willing to drop a fair amount of money on a nice dinner out as long as the quality and service backs up the price. At River House, this is not the case. It makes me furious when a restaurant passes off terrible quality food and slaps a huge price tag on it...as if I am not smart enough to know the difference.

    Let's talk about oysters.

It's pretty tough to mess up raw oysters. All they need to do is shuck and serve. But our oysters arrived dry... no pretty pearly sheen, no glorious traces of seawater. It was clear these had been shucked (and not properly, they stuck to the bottom shell) and left probably in the fridge for a day or two (or more?). I was afraid to eat them so I sent them back.

I had a seabass that you could still feel the frozen aftertaste--super dry and flavorless. 2 of my companions had seafood fra diavolo. Huge portions, but again the seafood didn't taste all that fresh. The lobsters were very stringy, small and dry... and carried a $50 price. Are you kidding me? Blue Moon in Rockville Center serves a bigger, fresher version for half that price.

What is so disappointing is that this restaurant is surrounded by fresh seafood markets, and literally the fishing boats are docked right behind the restaurant. How can they get away with stale old fish?

The restaurant itself was also pretty bad. We were originally seated between the front door and the kitchen. More than one patron tripped on my chair when making their way out. We asked to be moved to a new table (there were plenty) out of the way and it caused a bit of a stir. We should have known then to run away. The live music also was too loud and not that good.

So, all in all, a pretty bad experience. There are plenty of choices on the Nautical Mile, so I will avoid this one in the future.

Nice place on the Nautical Mile in Freeport to go and catch a nice dinner with friends or a good date place as well -- but be prepared to spend some money because this place is not inexpensive.

The River House Grille is right on the water, and has very nice water views from the bar, but I did not notice any tables near the waterside windows -- would have been nice if there were.  We sat right near a window on the street side and still made for a decent view as the Nautical Mile tends to be quaint.

The menu is not huge, but has a nice selection to choose from.  We chose a selection of appetizers and salads, all of which came out relatively quickly and were quite tasty.  In particular the Crab Cake type wonton wraps were nice and the Caesar salad made for nice pre-meal snacks.  BTW . . . the beer is plentiful both in bottle and tap.  Although a bit expensive, our meals came out and were quite impressive in portion size and apparently the chef is quite conscientious of what he is serving up, because I ordered the surf & turf (combined of shrimp & a porterhouse steak) -- obviously the chef realized the porterhouse was not up to par (it was fatty and a bit tough), so before he sent it to our table, he infomed the waiter that he was cooking up an additional petit filet to accompany my dinner (which made for quite a crowded table) -- as you might expect, I brought home a doggy bag.  After dinner we had dessert (try the creme brule cheesecake), and coffee (yes, they have cappuccino.)

If not up for spending what it takes to have dinner here, it is worthwhile to come and have  a drink or two before going elsewhere, both for the view, the friendly crowd and the good tunes.  If going for dinner, expect between $75 & $100 per couple depending on appetite.
