I had ordered a GROUPON...got there @6pm last Friday night. Â The entrees were excellent, including the CHURRACSO steak, paella and a puerto rican friend who exclaimed it was the best MOFONGO (in sauce) that she ever had!) no complaints @ the drinks, but the bread pudding dessert was RIDICULOUSLY stale. Based on other reviews I've read, management REALLY needs to throw OLD FOOD into the garbage and "take the loss".
Is it really worth it to RUIN a meal/your repuation?!? Â The waitresses were very nice and personable. Â Glad we were in the outside garden and avoided the too loud indoor music which was just starting as we were leaving. Plan to return, try some other dishes and totally avoid the dessert menu.
I went there with my friend on a sat night, I spended almost 300 dollars in a bottle or vodka and a chicken wings appetizer with only 4 chicken wings, we waited 40 minutes to get the food and the service was horrible, and guess what they included 20% tip!! The only good thing was the valet parking !!
Review Source:I'd love to go here because of its convenient location. But I refuse to support an establishment that continually violates the New York City Noise Code 2-3 times a week. (Seriously, 1AM on a Tuesday night people).
Ironically, when I went downstairs to ask them to turn the noise down, the DJ that I spoke to had a hard time hearing me...and I was right next to him. Get a clue much?
The majority of the way i rate places is by how much alcohol i can get....Riverdale Garden gets five stars because i got a crap load of alcohol included with my $14.99 brunch buffet. Â
Planned my mom's bday brunch here thinking menu was a la carte and was pleasantly surprised to see a delicious buffet setup which included paella (huge shrimp); mangu, bacon, fried cheese, fried salami, fresh strawberries, bacon and eggs...after three they added fettucini alfredo and ribs (YUMMY). Â We basically stayed there for three hours and had a great time.
The Waitress, Cesarina, and the head chef were very attentive and threw in a free actual cake (not just a slice) for my mom's bday. Â Back draw was that it was freezing in there but after a few Henny drinks (YES HENNY VS is included in the unlimited booze special) I warmed up pretty quickly. Â
Definitely will be back with friends.
I come to RG at least once a week. The food is always good! And they have Lucy the best bartender EVER! She makes the strongest drinks. Sangria, Blue Long Island Iced Tea, etc.
On Wednesdays if you buy two drinks for $5.00 each you get a burger and fries for $2.00. You cant find that deal anywhere... The paella is really good too! Fridays and Saturday nights there is a DJ.
I've been here twice, once for dinner just after the place reopened, and today for Sunday brunch. They were two completely different experiences, and both were pretty good in their own ways.
Brunch was great. It's not glamorous, but this place has an all you can eat breakfast buffet with mimosas for $15! The mimosas came in several flavors: mango, guava, and blood orange. I got the guava, and it was tasty. Breakfast options were a variety of latin american and caribbean dishes, including paella, refried beans and a very interesting potato dish, along with the basic eggs, bacon, sausage, and fried ham, and delicious eggy rolls.
There are lots of tea options for the non-coffee drinkers.
The atmosphere of the restaurant is very pleasant and the waitstaff is friendly.
When I went for dinner a while back, the place was packed, and table service was slow. It took us almost an hour and a half to get our food. Luckily I remember it being worth the wait, as everyone was very satisfied with their food. I got the adobo spiced tuna, and it had a perfect sear, and the mango slaw was delicious (the fact that I can still remember what I ordered this long after should be a clue that it was good). Â We were rather frustrated with the long wait and our server brought out the wrong entrees, but I think that may have been an isolated case.
The live music was great!
Overall I'd say the food is good, as is the ambiance, but the service is slow -- I would not go here if you're in a rush to get somewhere after dinner!
I went to dinner here last night with three friends and a Groupon and it was great!
Having read some of the other reviews on this sight, I wasn't sure how we'd be welcomed with a coupon but we were really pleased. Â The menu offerings were extensive and all our food was delicious. Â Empanadas were yummy, Steak was perfectly rare, the Fish Paella was full of tasty salmon and tilapia, and the drinks were good (Sangria-red and white and Mojitos). Â Staff couldn't have been nicer or more attentive!
The only down side is the limited on-street parking.
We'll definitely go back.
Really great food in a really nice restaurant. The garden out back was delightful. Our waitress, Aba, was sweet as pie and very helpful. The mojito and sangria were both very tasty. The food was delicious and in very generous portions. We were amazed that the place was so empty on a Friday night.
Review Source:I came here over the winter and the food was great !
The sangria was also amazing, its a must have! Â
The disappointing thing is that their isn't much of an ambiance. However i think that might change in the course of the spring/summer. Â They have a patio with out door seating, which will attract those who know its there in the summer time.
I would give this place another shot before I write anymore.....
NEVER AGAIN! I had the groupon deal dinner for 4 and was left unamused. What is the point of attracting new clientele with groupons if your only going to allow then to taste shity food on pre-fix menu! Guess you never heard of the power of work of mouth in this digital day'n'age and repeat clientele.
It was off to a good start we got seated in the patio out back and the scenery was super cute for our double date. The server was nice and attentive. The appetizers and drinks came out soon thereafter then it was all down hill. The tostones w shrimp was a bit bland. My friend had the empanadas she said was ok.
THE SANGRIA WAS SO WEAK and watery. A total waste. We overheard a drunk man child complain about the service to his waitress and were surpised he complained about how slow the sevice had been and how unsatisfied with the experience he had been. I chalked it up to having had too much to drink but like magic all of sudden I started to experience the same. Did I mention the place was empty (friday at 8pm) no excuse for this slow a service.
We waited so long for the main plates that the waitress took pity on us and brought over a free COLD plate of GREASY fried TASTELESS calamari. A second round of the juice they call Sangria and dinner finally arrived and with the exception of my dish was a huge dissapointment. The mexican paella was bland dry more like moro rather than paella. The chicken francese tasted like you were biting into a lemon. and the skirt steak was just OK. We sent the chicken dish back because it was beyond edible it was replaced with a decent burger and the most greasy soggy sweet potato fries I had ever seen. BARF.
If you MUST dine here I suggest you stick to the mofongo de marisco (seafood). It was great. The fruit inside of the sangria was great but the sangria itself was shit. To all the delusional yelpers raving about this sangria... If you want a real sangria head to Camaradas in Harlem. Everything else including the chef and service needs serious overhaul.
There are good and bad things about Riverdale Garden. I love the remodel. Now I should probably preface by saying that I've been to this place before - when I was in college. It was a dump. Now it's beautiful. Great attention to detail, nice atmosphere too.
Went on a Monday at 5pm to use a Groupon. It was dead. We were the only people in the place the whole time. While I really wanted to try out the back garden, it was pouring rain, so we opted for indoor seating. We explained right away that we had the Groupon (actually I think my friend mentioned it when she made a reservation).
Our waiter explained that we could choose from the prix fixe menu of the day. I got the sangria and my friend got the mojito, both were excellent. We went with the chicken & cheese empanadas for an appetizer. They were okay. We both got burgers for our entrees and this was where one of the problems were. We both ordered medium well, and unless the definitions have changed, these burgers were NOT medium well. Very, very pink on the inside, and not just a little. We decided to go with it - and the burgers were pretty good and flavorful, but we were both extremely distracted by the borderline red meat we were putting into our mouths.
We had to ask for our check - now maybe the waiter was just being polite and letting us sit and talk, but I thought common practice was to bring us the check and tell us there was no rush. Once we asked, it took him about 10 minutes to print it. Keep in mind that the restaurant was still empty at this point. As someone else mentioned, the gratuity was added. Which was weird. There were only 2 of us, and our bill was $0. The amount added was also odd - just over $5. I don't know how they came up with this amount, but we tipped more than that.
Before we left we asked about their happy hour specials - It's 4-8pm Monday - Friday and there are $3 beers and $5 mixed drinks. A pretty good deal in my opinion. If I go back it will be for that and probably not the food.
I went here last Friday night with a friend and I wasn't impressed. Although the ambience was nice, the music was very loud, the appetizers and main course took at least an hour to show up. The food was good though, but not sure if it was worth the wait. Our waitress was not attentive as we constantly needed to get there attention to refill our drinks.
Review Source:I was taken here by a friend to eat. The food was a lot better than I thought it would be. It was one of the best meals I've had in the city! They had a nice variety of dishes to choose from. The backyard area is very nicely decorated. It is a good place to bring a date. Happy hour has inexpensive drinks. I'd go back here to eat.
They also have music + dancing Thursday - Sunday at about 11:00PM until 4:00AM?. Most people do not dance they just stand there and drink.
Living in the neighborhood, I had high hopes. But in the end, it's just mediocre.
Like another reviewer mentioned, the Groupon sold stated that we were supposed get a shared appetizer (up to $11), two entrees (up to $27 each) and two sides (up to $5 each) Â with our voucher. Â Up to a $75 value. Â However, right away the waitress told us that the items that came with the entree were THE side we were getting, and no extra. Â Ok...I wasn't thrilled but figured I'd take that up with Groupon later. I was, however, very annoyed that they weren't willing, without my insistence, to substitute the sides for different sides. We purchased a Groupon that said we had a choice of two sides, and that is what I expected. I got my substitution in the end.
Don't waste your time looking at their menu online, it isn't at all like the one when you get there. I tried the apricot sangria and my husband the berry sangria. Both were good, but mine was better. For the appetizer we had the short ribs over creamed potatoes. This was very good.
My husband had the Churrasco for his entree and thought it was good. I got the BBQ ribs and chicken. Sadly, the ribs were extremely dry, and the chicken a little bloody. Not a very edible meal in the end. I filled up on my sides, and overall the sides were all fine, but the winner in the future would be the creamed potatoes.
We went on a Friday night and the place was DEAD. We weren't in a rush so didn't find service slow. Our server, Lila, was fantastic. Really pleasant and helpful.
When we got the bill we saw that gratuity had automatically been included, even though we were just a party of 2, and the bill was under $100. No where did it say that gratuity would automatically be included, and I'm honestly not even sure that it's legal to pick and choose who get gratuity automatically billed. I can understand why it was included, to prevent the servers from getting lousy tips based on the drinks or whatever portion wasn't included on the Groupon. All I'm saying is that it should have been stated on the Groupon that it would be automatic and in fact there was a note on the Groupon implying that it wouldn't be: "Remember--there's no discount on great service. Please be sure to tip on the total bill (Groupon value plus anything else you order)." Had service been poor I would have fought this, but in the end, Lila was great and I gave her a little more in addition to what they took without my permission.
I dined here with hubby the other night, courtesy of Groupon. Â We went on a Sunday evening and it was pretty quiet, considering they're opened until 2am. Â The entire dining room was empty except for a few people scattered around the bar. Â
Our Groupon originally stated that we were supposed get a shared appetizer, two entrees and two sides with our voucher. Â Up to a $75 value. Â When it was time for us to order, though, the waitress told us that the managers changed the voucher details because they felt that the items that came with the entree was enough for the voucher. Â I was a little peeved by that because when we bought the voucher, it was based on what Groupon stated was included. Â I will be contacting Groupon about that as well.
We ordered the cheese plate to start. Â It was a nice light beginning, though, it could have used a cracker or some other type of vehicle for the cheese. Â They have a $1 beer special which is excellent, so we had Blue Moons all night. Â I had the Shrimp Paella and asked that they not use the chorizo that is listed in the ingredients because I don't eat meat so they took it upon themselves to add chicken. Â I don't know why but, whatever. Â Hubby had a veal and beef burger with pancetta and cheese. Â He enjoyed it immensely. Â
I noticed that they have a Sunday brunch that we intend to try since they are located so close to our neighborhood. Â Doesn't hurt to give them another try.
We went there because we had a groupon. Â When we first got there, we were the first people there (5:00pm on a Friday). Â Service was great, up until after we ate. Â We had to wait awhile to get our check but the food was delicious! Â We had the tuna steak, seafood paella and fried calamari. Â All tasted fresh and had a good flavor. Â We also enjoyed some sangria, which was good though strong. Â They were missing quite a few things from the menu which was slightly disappointing. Â Outside of the happy hour (from 4-7 I think, $5 sangria, $3 beer), they have $1 beers on Sunday. Â Not just Bud or Coors but real beer. Â We will definitely be back there!
Review Source:Came here for dinner with my best friends.
Beautiful decor and adequate spacing. I felt the lighting was really dark and the music was rather "Kenny G-ish" for a night on the town with the girls. We requested some candles at our table to lighten up the mood.
The menu looked pretty good and prices were average, but more on the pricier side. I ordered sweet plantain wrap as an appetizer which was not what I expected. I didn't like the flavor combinations much. Following the appetizer, I had the Crab cake salad. It lacked flavor and it was lack luster. Â Nothing was horrible, but I didn't find my meal to be anything out of the ordinary.
The service was poor. Our waitress did not know the menu well, and she was not refilling our glasses. This, coupled with the lack of availability for items on their menu, is enough for me not to go back.
Where do I start? The husband tells me his captain said this place was great. So we decided to go last night (Sunday).
As I entered this location, no one was at the door... it took about 5 minutes for us to get noticed. We then were seated by a Dominican waitress in which I was completely disappointed by the way she carried herself. If you are Hispanic, please be proud of your heritage and speak to me in Spanish if I am addressing you in Spanish. Do not try to speak horrible English when we both speak Spanish. Plus, do not change the name of the food to "Spanglish". It doesn't work for me.
We started with appetizers... calamari. Must say it was decent... but it was a WAIT!
Then another wait for the dishes.

My husband ordered a churrasco steak. It was great. Â I had a cavatelli toscano plate with sweet Italian sausages, roast peppers, Lima beans and asparagus. The pasta and sausages were great. Everything else... was disappointing in my plate. ( veggies tasted old and like they were just digged up from the ground)
As we sat and spoke, we asked for the check. We waited so long.... we thought they were calling the credit card company to verify my husbands identity.( LOL ) But then again everything was a wait... I thought they were killing a cow in the back for the meat, traveling with my dish from Italia to NYC... etc.
It was just too much of a wait for me. Food was semi-great but the wait time was horrible.
Me: "Wake up, let's go have brunch."
Him: "No, it's too early, let me sleep you crazy woman!"
M: "But I want to go to brunch and have unlimited mimosas!"
H: "So we'll go later, it's 9am on a Sunday."
M: "There are no places around here to go."
H: "I may have to kill you."
M: "Fine! You never want to do anything with me!" *proceeds to cry*
H: "Whatever." *turns over*
.::4 hours later::.
H: "Ready for brunch babe?"
M: "It's too late to go anywhere!"
H: "What about that place you said just opened around here?"
M: "Oh yeah..."
.::30 minutes later::.
M: "Oh, $25 for a 3 course brunch? Great, I'll start with the bread basket, you should get the empanadas then we can share."
H: "Don't tell me what to get, I'll get what I want!"
M: "As long as you want the empanadas I'm cool with you making your own decisions."
Waitress: "What can I get you to start?"
H: "She'll have the bread basket and I'll have the empanadas."
M: *smug smirk*
.::30 minutes later::.
Me: "Do you think they're ever going to bring out our apps? They haven't even taken our entree order. I'm so hungry, I'm going to cry!"
H: "You're not going to cry, you're just drunk, stop drinking so many damn guava mimosas."
M: "But I'm so thirsty!"
H: "Have some water. *mumbles* I swear I should have gone home last night..."
M: "What did you say?"
H: "Nothing, oh look! The appetizers are here!"
M: "Yay!"
*Waitress makes a hasty getaway*
M: Hurry and flag her down so we can order the rest of our food!"
.::40 minutes later::.
Waitress: "I'm sorry but we ran out of the hollandaise sauce"
M: "So why didn't you tell us that before you completed the order?"
H: "Hun*, don't start..."
M: "What? I'm just sayin', it's not eggs benedict without the hollandaise sauce, it's just eggs and Canadian bacon..."
H: "It's ok, I don't care."
M: "I mean seriously, I know this place is new and I really like the look of the place, but there are some places they can improve in."
H: "And I'm sure you're going to write about it on Yelp."
M: "Well, yeah. I like it here though. I'll come back, I'm sure they're working out the kinks."
H: "Or else you'll complain to the manager."
M: "Yeah."
H: "When did I start bedding an old lady? Who are you?"
M: "I'm a self-important, know-it-all..."
H: "Just like all Yelpers."
M: "Yup."

Went on a wednesday night with the very best friends that anyone can have... So we werent sure if we wanted to do a full-blown dinner thing, so we sat at the bar while we made up our minds.
Happy hour is from 5-8pm, and that includes $5 well drinks, sangria, some appetizers and $3 beers. Â We had the sangrias which were alright, I've had better. Â The appetizers we order: fried calamari, empanadas, short ribs w/ mashed potatoes, and tostones montados (w/ shrimp). Â The food was a big let down, there was nothing different or special about any of these dishes, and the flavor was lacking in most of them. Â There was confusion regarding the sauce that came with the chicken empanadas, and when they finally brought the right one, it was not good at all...avocado and licorice is the flavor you get -__- ... I hate licorice!!!!
ANYWHO! Â It was evident I would not be returning to this place for the food so I had no desire to try an entree as they are pretty pricey.
What made me want to come back to this place is the beautiful space, including the garden, and the themed night. Â There was a bolero singer, beautiful voice, and the bartenders were great people (especially Crystal!) Â We had been there for a long time so we got a round on the house, which I can always appreciate. Â Also, the chocolate mousse was awesome, the best thing there, I wouldve eaten three of those. Â If they can bring the food to the next level then this place would be amazing.
its a drinks and appetizer kind of place if you ask me. small portions, expensive price tag, street parking, incredibly slow food service.
their saving grace are: 1) an aussie waitress who is hilllllllllllllarious & very sweet  2) their outdoor space is beautiful. think dining al fresco.
i'm gonna give this place a second try since it is very obvious they JUST re-opened under new management... but something tells me it has a very strong possibility of turning into a college hang out.
I will definitely revise this review after I have gone a second time. Â It's only been open 3 weeks and I think they need time to get their things together. Â No organization / communication.
It's a gorgeous place with a nice garden in the back. Â I went with some friends on Sunday for Brunch. Â We were very excited to eat out in the garden but unfortunately they had a private event so we sat inside. Â The decor is very pretty and menu seems very good - not to mention they have unlimited mimosas... ok so why 3 little stars? ...
1. We had about 4 different ppl wait on us. Â We had to continuously ask for more water when we were done and ask for refills on the mimosas.
2. We waited about 20 minutes before we got our appetizers, and only 2/4 people got their appetizers (empanadas) which were good at least. Â 3rd person got their shrimp ceviche about 10 minutes later and our last appetizer came out after 45 minutes of waiting. Â What was this special dish that took so long? Â A cheese platter... 3 different types of cheese with a few grapes and olives.. Really? 45 minutes?
3. Â Entrees: Â 3 steps to heaven (Mangu) - tasted good, but eggs came out over easy instead of over hard. Â Steak and eggs - steak came out medium rare instead of WELL DONE and eggs came out scrambled instead of over hard. Â Salad with steak - where was the rest of the salad? Â Not to mention it honestly looked like they cut a piece off the steak and eggs dish to throw a little bit of steak on the salad dish. :( Â Oxtail with rice and yucca fries - first of all they brought me mangu instead of oxtail but once the dish came out it was good but only got 3 TINY pieces of yucca fries. Â
4. Dessert: 3 ppl order the the Creme Brulee I order the coconut sorbet. Â 20 minutes later - sorry guys no creme brulee. Â Really?! Fine pistacchio icecream it is...
Overall, service was not great, our orders weren't perfect , the food was ok/good, the place is really nice. Â The ONLY reason i would go again is because the place has A LOT of potential. Â They just need better and quicker communication between the kitchen and the waiters. Â
Also think the private party they had in the back affected the service. Â However a party of 40 in the garden + maybe 3 tables inside is not much of an excuse...
