On the beautiful Rogue River, for those who love Pacific Cuisine at it's best...River's Edge will not disappoint you.  As soon as you enter the foyer, the decor and art immediately reminds one of  "A River Runs Through it."
I ordered the Asparagus Tenderloin, a marinated grilled filet with Parmesan asparagus, poached egg & citrus butter sauce.
The fillet was delicious and the asparagus was perfect. The sauce was promisingly complex and savory.
The menu is inventive and enticing. Just enough selection so there is a great variety and your incisiveness does not raise it's confusing head. However, deciding between their homemade Bread Pudding with raspberry liqueur soaked craisins and white chocolate and a whisky butter sauce or the Vanilla Bean Creme Brulee wasn't easy either. The Creme Brulee won, and is fantastic!
The service was great and my server very pleasant and knowledgeable.
Four Stars! And you know..."On The Road Again" has never given five. Having such a coveted location and stadium seating for the view, River's Edge doesn't really need to dedicate any focus on their food, but they do seem to take pride in their offerings and seem to truly care that you have a good experience. The menu has a decent variety, and an interactive direct-your-ingredients bruschetta that's unique, for sure. The service is nice, and it seems like a place suited for the Grants Passionates to take their friends, parents and loved ones for a nice-esque dinner encounter.
In the end, I kinda felt I'd spent a little too much for not being especially sated, which is sort of how I've felt about most restaurants in Southern Oregon lately. But anyhow. If you're in the area, it's an alright option, with a pretty view, so long as it's still light outside.
Coming from Portland, I'm now realizing that it's pretty much impossible for me to objectively comment on restaurants anywhere else. I have a spidey sense for Sysco and certain eras in restaurant/airport/hotel decor. But taking context into consideration... s'alright.
We went for their prix-fixe menu for Thanksgiving dinner since it was just the three of us and we just wanted a nice dinner break since we're working on some time-sensitive writing projects. Â The location can't be beat, and I'm sure during the warmer months and having a burger and drink out on the deck would be wonderful. Â
As for the meal, for $30, I wasn't expecting perfection, but I was definitely not prepared for all the short-cuts this restaurant expected to slip by the average customer. Â First, the appetizer was a set of three prefabricated hummus "cups"...plastic cups...the kind you'd use to get some squirts of ketchup from a 5 Brother's joint. Â The pita was cold, the crudites were sad. Â But again, we were hungry, and I was reminded of the Cervantes' quote: "Hunger is the best sauce."
Second, the meal itself. Â I ordered the pork roulette stuffed with sausage and sage, while my in-laws ordered the turkey. Â We should have known something was up when both their slices of turkey looked almost identical. Â Prefab turkey as well? Â Really? Â And then my pork. Â I would have given this place one star except that maybe I'm hoping that their regular menu really isn't this bad. Â I read another review from a family that ordered lamb shank and steak and it wasn't a glowing review either, so I have to say that I'm not surprised at the lack of quality of the entrees.
The pork must have been prefabbed as well, it was BONE dry, and the stuffing had sausage that must have had all the porky fat goodness rendered out of it before it was even stuffed into the pork. Â My mashed potatoes were clearly out of a box or canister, the gravy uninspiring, and the sides (stuffing and sweet potatoes) were pedestrian and unimaginative. Â What is up with that? Â I guess as a head cook or chef, I'd just cry if I had to send out such lameness into the world. Â It would have been much better to have only two selections - turkey and ham - cook them IN-HOUSE, and cut down on the sides but make them from scratch and be proud of the quality, not the quantity, of what you offer to your customers.
Anyways, I still had a great time because of the company, and my in-laws have said they had had better meals at this place or else they never would have thought of it for Thanksgiving dinner. Â I totally believe them, and was happy to be spending time with them so I guess the company can really make up for a sub-par effort on the part of a restaurant. Â
The waitstaff were really nice, a tad young and inexperienced, but energetic and had good attitudes about having to work on Thanksgiving. Â I really did appreciate that!
Tried it last night, very good. Â They were changing to a new menu and will do so apparently 4 times a year to keep local, properly grown, seasonal food on the menu. Â I have severe food sensitivities and they were really careful. Â They do not have gluten free marked on the menu yet, but are working on it, and do have a button on the ordering machine so that they can flag a ticket as GF. Â They do not mark the food sourcing on the menu but if that is important to you (it is to us) ask and they will tell you.
It was a really good deal, we had dinner for two: 1 large appetizer (hummus plate); 2 mains; and a desert (husband go the bread pudding) for $30, total not each. Â The wine selection was fine, from affordable-but-drinkable to fancy. Â Excellent tap.
The do not put bread on the table automatically, but will bring it if you ask.
Good service, better than most in this town. Â We will definitely go back.
Went out to this restaurant on Saturday night on Sept. 29th for dinner at sunset. When we arrived we were seated right away on the terraced covered patio. We were tended to right away by a very pleasant efficient waitress. I ordered the Steak and the wife had the chicken entree. Both were cooked just right and tasted great. We enjoyed a duo singing group that evening. Overall service excellent, pleasant and accomodating. The atmosphere outstanding. I was so pleased I let my friends and former neighbors know so they to can enjoy (in my opinion) one of the best dinner  restaurants that Grants Pass has to offer.
By the way I found out later that the Train Depot is owned by the same people and we had three breakfasts there that week, also great. AM so pleased we tried these two places on this trip. Most trips here we had been disappointed in the food in town.
It comes with great regret to write this review. It was a 12 hour drive into Oregon. With the last several hours looking forward to dinner at the Rivers Edge. My wife had waited 25 years for this day to meet some Family for the first time. We took an outside table for 5. We were sat very quick as there was only 2 other tables ordering food. We waited several minutes for the waiter to take our drink and appetizer order and then waited another 20 min + for the waiter to bring the drinks 1 beer 1 glass of wine and 5 waters. Â The appetizer was another 15 min later and then was wrong. Of course they comped that and brought out what we ordered 10 min later. More then an hour and the waiter is bringing our food. Now he mixes up the plates at the table not a big deal as we switch it around. Now the last plate of food comes out. The waiter sets it down just as I put my fork into the food another waitress runs up and grabs the food fork still in the plate. The waitress then walks over to another table and sets the food down. With someone else's fork that has been used from the appetizer we ate. I enjoy a good meal with great service. But This Meal was great food with some of the worst service I have ever had. Now the food was cold but again unfortunate because the chef was amazing. The chowder amazing but cold the fillet tender and cocked just right med rare but also cold. Even the glass of wine a local Pinot awesome. The staff just dropped the ball every step of the way. Â And for that I will not go back and would hate to recommend this place to a Friend.
Review Source:Recently took friends here for a special dinner. We made reservations, requested that we be on the lower deck outside, and arrived timely for our dinner at 7:00. On arrival, we were told they don't reserve for location of seating just a seat, and if we wanted to be on the lower deck we would have to wait as those seats were taken. I had not been told when taking the reservation that the deck could not be reserved.
We were shown to the lounge, and a waiter appeared shortly with an order of steamers that he said was a kitchen mistake and they wanted to give them to us gratis. As nice jesture for the delay being seated. However, drink service was slow, we were served drinks after about a half hour wait. We sat in the lounge for 50 minutes before being seated for dinner.
Our dinner server was conscientious, but seemed to be spread all over the three decks and inside seating, and was seldom around except when delivering food. We ordered almost immediately after being seated, having studied the menus at length while waiting for our table. We then waited another 45 minutes before the entrees were delivered at nearly 8:45. By then the sun was down, and it was cool on the deck, and we had dressed to be there earlier in the daylight.
The food was good, well presented, and tasty. We declined dessert (though they sounded really good) due to the lateness and coolness.
This is a restaurant with a good chef, and a lot of potential, but the front of the house is not well run, and they appeared to be understaffed for the physical layout of the facility (which is gorgeously situated right on the Rogue River) . Without the management issues, I would have been at a 4 or 41/2 star review.
Went for lunch the other day. Â Beautiful view and patio outside, very nice interior as well. Â Our food was wonderful. Â Sandwiches on focaccia with side salads. Â A friend with us had steamer clams.
Minor complaints - the clams weren't really "steamers," but still good and had a wonderful broth. Â Service was a little slow, but we had a table of 15 ladies ahead of us who insisted on separate checks (sigh).
We'll be back.
We walked into this place and it was not what I expected. Very nice interior and a amazing patio, along with a nice clean lounge. Our waitress was very nice along with the rest of the staff.
I ordered the Lamb Shank with garlic mashers, my wife ordered the New York also with garlic mashers, and our daughter got the tempura chicken fingers.
After about 15 minutes the waitress came out to inform us that the sides we picked were out. So I picked wild rice and my wife a baked potato. Later found out they were also out of baked potatoes. When you are paying $25+ per plate, this is unacceptable. She settled for sweet potato mashers which looked like baby food and she did not care for. My dinner came out a good 10 minutes after the rest of my families. They were halfway through their food by the time I started. The rice was terrible. It was not light and fluffy, but literally a sticky wet glob under the lamb shank. My first bite into the lamb revealed a cold (yes ice cold) small part of the shank while the rest was on the lower side of lukewarm. Even though the waitstaff and decor are really great, they can't save the letdown from the meal itself. With so many choices in the mid-upper realm of restaurants, we will probably not risk this place again.
We came here for a family dinner and we were quite pleased.
The restaurant is beautiful and has lots of patio seating by the river or, if you sit inside, the large windows are plentiful to guarantee a good view wherever you are seated.
The hostess here is very congenial and is exactly the type of person you want to give a great first impression. Our server was fantastic and really took care of us.
The menu had some great options with lamb shank, New York steak, pork chops... but something else caught my attention this night. I ordered a special: fish and chips made with fresh cod. I picked a tomato bisque to accompany it which was a deliciously wonderful choice. While not the best deep fried cod I've had when ordering fish & chips, this fish was pretty good.
I do think the menu was slightly overpriced and this is really the only complaint I have with this restaurant. If I lived in the area I would definitely come back as often as my wallet allowed.
Went for dinner. Â Bar was comfortable. Â Ordered dinner and all went down hill from there. Â Four out of four dinners left a lot to be desired. Â Couldn't tell it was Mahi Mahi, Lamb shanks were so over done that it was not worth eating. Â
With that being said - we will try one more time. Â We want this restaurant to make it but they need to have a menu designed for the area with reasonable prices. Â Nothing worse than spending big bucks and leaving feeling like we wasted good money.
Hopefully they will improve.
Wonderful atmosphere and location. Â When I saw the prices for lunch, I gasped and then hoped for outstanding food that would live up to the price, hamburger and fries, $13. Â Seating was prompt and service went down hill from there. Â It was not busy, maybe 5 tables occupied. Â Three in our party, only two menus. Â By the time the third menu arrived, we had all read the menu over several times. Â One person ordered iced tea, slow to arrive. Â The tea was very cloudy and looked ancient. Â Mentioned it to the server who said "Its the city water." Â A glass of fresh brewed, clear tea was provided, yet covered pitchers of cloudy tea were still at the serving stations when we left. Gross! Â The menu touted crispy fries with the sandwiches. Â After 35 minutes of waiting for our meal, it arrived and looked nice at first glance. Â The fries with my $13 hamburger were barely warm and very soggy. Â I checked the fries on my wife's plate. Â They were cut differently than mine, were hot and crispy, and of no resemblance to what was on my plate. Â Odd. Â Asked the server, who in turn checked with the chef. Â He said they had run out of fries the night before and had FSA deliver more frozen fries, but they were different than what they normally get. Â My hamburger patty was machine made and not very flavorful. Â Big disappointment. Â I can get frozen restaurant supply meals at most Grants Pass eateries for half the price. Â Sure hope someone will open a dinner house in Grants Pass and cook with fresh food someday.
Review Source:This landmark is now reopened (I think by the folks who own the Train Depot restaurant). Â Food was excellent. Â Good variety of choices for dinner. Â Prices are spendy. Â View is spectacular of the Rogue River. Â Nice choice for outdoor dining on a pleasant day or evening. Â If the restaurant is to succeed with other than tourists, it needs to be more price conscious. Â Interior needs some updating. Â Looking somewhat bland and generic, and 70's. Â This can be accomplished in just 48 hours, if you call "Restaurant Impossible" TV show. Â A good dining experience, with an awesome view, but bring your gold or platinum credit card.
Review Source:Had their Sunday brunch yesterday. Â I am a brunch fan and I believe this to be the best one in Southern Oregon. Â I frequently have brunch at the Jacksonville Inn which is very good but now I have a new favorite. Â The decor is very elegant and probably the nicest in Grants Pass. Â We sat on a deck right over the Rogue River. Â You could not get more river edge than this. Â The menu had an Asian flair and I tried the Okinawain Hash which featured poached eggs, roasted pig Hawaiian style with sweet potatoes. Â We were also served a smoked salmon plate, a fruit plate and a homemade pastry plate. Â And to top it off we were served a chocolate covered ball of cheese cake on a stick for a true dessert treat. Â Everything was top notch including the friendly and prompt service. Â They kept the champagne flowing freely throughout the meal. Â What a delight. Â I can't wait to try their lunch and dinner menus. Â They also promised us to feature more local wines on a new wine menu.
Review Source:When going to write a review I noticed that there was a previous listing for this place that had some serious lack of star-age for what this place is under the new ownership. I did not eat there previously as I moved to the area right after it closed. I heard that it was beautiful, had an amazing view, and was just sitting there.
We went for dinner last night and upon walking in were greeted promptly and seated. The view of the river is amazing and when the weather is warmer I can't wait to sit on the patio. We had the ahi tuna appetizer. It was simply a seared tuna steak with a drizzle of wasabi sauce and sesame on a bed of greens. Dang. Perfectly dressed and melted in my mouth. I ordered the short ribs and the man had the shrimp saute. Soup of the day was an Okinawa sweet potato and coconut bisque. It was delicious. The short ribs weren't what I was expecting. It was a chuck eye-roll cut and served more like a steak with the texture of pot-roast. Not exactly what I was in the mood for. I really expected it to be cut across the bone. For what it was, it was cooked perfectly, insanely tender and juicy, the presentation was beautiful and the mound of wasabi mashed potatoes it was resting on were astoundingly good. I tried a few bites of the shrimp saute. It was an Asian style noodle dish with lots of crisp vegetables and thick noodles in a coconut curry sauce. Again, cooked perfectly and delicious. Of course we had dessert! I'm a sucker for dessert. I can't remember what it was called, chocolate something? It was bars of ganache with a crust reminiscent of a nestle crunch bar served with a nice scoop of peppered white chocolate cream. It looked like a vanilla bean ice cream but was fluffy and perfectly black-peppery. Really rich, I couldn't eat it all and it needed to be shared. It was cut into bars and stacked atop a berry sauce with fresh raspberries and blueberries. I want to go back and try the rest of the dessert menu. Seriously, just looking at it I will be going back to have all the desserts. I'm going to order all of them. At once. I will update my review with the outcome even if it's from a hospital bed after I wake up from a diabetic coma.
Horrible service. Â Our server gave new meaning to the word 'inattentive'. Â We had to get up and ask for service multiple times. Â The manager on duty seemed pretty inexperienced. Â After he became aware of the situation, he made no mention of it. Â Some acknowlegement and apology would have been appropriate and appreciated. Â
Mediocre food. Â Although I got the impression that the food is relatively good for Grants Pass' standards, it certainly wasn't great.
Good atmosphere. Â Both the deck and indoor seating are pleasant. Â Not spectacular, but certainly better than the service and food.
I couldn't bear giving this place 2 stars because it has a lot of potential and I suspect it was a 5-star place at one time. I saw online that it was for sale (?)
The temperature the evening we visited was 110 degrees on the patio, IN THE SHADE, so we opted to dine inside. I was disappointed since the Rogue River was almost close enough to touch from the patio. Truly a beautiful setting to celebrate our 32nd Wedding Anniversary.
The Hostess seated us 45 minutes before our reservation - I called ahead to see if this was possible "ABSOLUTELY" she said. Once seated our Waitress came by, introduced herself and took our drink order while we studied the menu. When visiting far from home, we like to chat up the Waitstaff so we told her where we were from and why we were in Grants Pass, etc., and got essentially no response, just a blank stare. OK....not overly friendly.
We ordered our meal and weren't told ahead of time that soup or salad was included (it's not on the menu either) so when I said I wanted to start with the gorgonzola & pecans salad and then wanted the fresh Alaskan salmon, she asked me if I wanted soup or salad. "Do I need salad with my salad?" I puzzled, and it was definitely not soup weather.
Anyway, we got past that hurdle and ordered a bottle of wine, a local label from Bonny Doon (Santa Cruz county) that was excellent. She brought out an ice bucket without asking if we wanted one (we don't) so the wine was really kept too cold for our taste.
Portions were huge but nicely prepared and presented. We noticed by the time we left  -to get back to our nice & chilly, air-conditioned hotel room- the diningroom had begun to fill up with an older, more distinguished crowd, mostly 60ish and over.
River's Edge is most likely the poshest eating establishment in Grants Pass and seems a nice place for a special occasion birthday or Anniversary, too bad our Waitress wasn't a little more friendly.
I have been to the River's Edge a few times. Â This place is great. Â I have not had a bad meal yet. Â Eating on the river is the best. Â The service is Great! Â Very friendly! Â I was disappointed that they took Kung Pao Chicken off of the menu. Â I tired the stir fry and it was very good. Â Salads and soups are great too. Â Excellent portions. Â Can't wait to go back.
Review Source:Grants Pass isn't exactly a cultural mecca and this fact is reflected in it's lack of decent dining. Â The River House, however, is an exception. Â
Finally someone has utilized the beauty of the Rogue River and incorporated it into the restaurant atmosphere. Â The deck overlooking the verdant river is gorgeous and spaciously tiered to resemble an ampitheater for the river. Â Not a bad seat out there.
The food is fresh and delicious. Â The drinks are fat. Â The service is always very attentive. Â
Definitely a gem in southern Oregon.
