So, like I love to do when I travel I look for places to try while I am there. Small places, neighborhood places, and original places.
This qualifies as all of the above.
Roosevelt's manages to take really good food and beer and bring it to a relaxed atmosphere so you don't feel like you're in yuppie hell.
One of the dishes we ordered was bacon wrapped shrimps wrapped in large shrimp. The reduction that was drizzled over it just made it complete..fantastic!
The best thing  they had, possibly one of the best I have tried was their asparagus. OMG. Fresh large asparagus wrapped in salt cured prosciutto covered in goat cheese. Even the cherry tomatoes on the side were stuffed. No words can adequately describe them.
So if you're ever in McAllen, TX (god forbid) give this place a try you will not be disappointed.
Roosevelt's at 7 is a beacon of shining light in the RGV.
It's one of the few places around that you have your choice of a huge offering of beers, and good food to boot.
So that alone gives Roosevelt's a high score in my book. But let me just air my dirtty laundry now.
Roosevelt's: you have a great opportunity here! You have the best beer offering for miles, so why not take your good bar and make it GREAT?
And it all boils down to one thing. One simple, easy thing that will bring more return on investment for you, sell more of your higher price point bottles, and make the customer experience better: a printed beer list.
Look, I know you have a hundred bottles or whatever number you have, but what good is that to me, if I don't know what the heck you have? I know that your staff is educated and taught to give recommendations, but what about customer choice?
I can be a beer snob, I'll admit, but with that, I know what sorts of beers I want, and what brands I may be after in a particular visit. Staff recommendations are great when you really aren't sure what you want, but it also makes it harder on the back end for a business to mange and move inventory.
The answer of "we change our beers multiple times a day" just doesn't work. Take a look at some of the best beer bars in the country, we're talking places that have 500+ different bottles each day. They are able to make it work, I assure you that you can too.
Print it off in the morning, if you run out of something, sharpie that bad boy out and move on with your day. You see, instead of me settling on a Fireman's 5 or something reliable that I know you'll have, I could be ordering a $15 bottle that I otherwise may not know that you have.
Really, I plead you, help us customers out and spend some time everyday to offer up a list, it will really help us both!
Phew, ok, enough on that point.
Food wise, the offerings are pretty solid. I tend to go with the shrimp pizza, because it's weird, just artery-clogging enough, and comes with a side of spicy ranch. But other things friends or I have had are always tasty and great.
Plus, the outside patio is one of the best places to catch up with friends on any evening of the week.
But really, about that beer list...
Roosevelt's is our absolute favorite place in the Valley. Â You can dress up, dress down, it doesn't matter. Â You'll have a good time either way. Â We LOVE the beer selection, the food is great, and since the kitchen is open til close (2 AM every night!) it's pretty much the only place we've found where you can have a decent bite to eat late at night.
Review Source:OK, OK...after being here for a couple of months, Rosie's really is a watering hole in the middle of a dry, dry desert.
Plenty of ciders on tap (ACE, Angry Orchard), a couple of mixed drinks (order the Hummingbird: Angry Orchard and Chambord) and, yes, the actual bar food is acceptable (hummus and pizzas are best). Do NOT order a salad, however.
If you want wine, house. wine.
If you want cocktails, El Divino.
But if you want beer, there's only Roosevelt's.
It has great fantastic beers (on and off tap) that are generally hard to find in the valley. Â The wait-staff is competent and generally seem intelligent; quite refreshing. Â For instance, when I told my waiter that I am vegan, he actually understood what I meant (and why I was surprised he understood), and they have a few small things on menu that I can order (besides lettuce). Â To boot, they claim to be able to make a vegan pizza (haven't tried it yet, but they passed my ingredients interrogation). Â The atmosphere is pleasant and fun (they have games to play), it is usually not crowded, and the background music tends to be decent (again a rarity around these parts).
Review Source:Terrific Mother's Day Brunch with friends. Â Service was very good. Â Price was right. Â Frank & Betty had all the oysters they could eat. Â We all enjoyed the prime rib. Huge shrimp with cocktail sauce. Â Fresh omelets were perfectly prepared. Â Good pasta with choice of sauces. Vegetables were cooked just right. Â Juicy strawberries & other fruit for dipping in chocolate. Â The place was packed when they opened so it was a little hard to get around but the young families were all having a very good time.
Review Source:These reviews really annoy me. Regular people saying hipsters are pretentious, hipsters saying "regular" people are cholos, bud light lovers saying the beers are too expensive. Seems to be a lot of people from "up north" commenting on Valley life, and a lot of Valley people who aren't comfortable with an establishment that's not like what they already know. I'll try to stay neutral and keep my review focused on JUST Roosevelt's.
Good beer costs money. This can be learned at the gas station coolers, anything not made by Miller or Anheuser is generally going to be more expensive. You also probably won't be able to drink a whole 6-pack of them so it evens out. It costs money to import. If you try to get these beers anywhere else in Texas you will probably be charged even more. I've seen great beer specials regularly in the valley, and for imports (non-mexican) these prices are not bad at all.
I really enjoy going to this place because of the selection. I feel there is too many beers being brewed around the world for me to stick to miller lite and the occasional Mexican beer. Therefore if I'm going to a place that boasts it's selection I'm probably gonna try different things. On this note I give a big plus to Roosevelt's. The crowd isn't overbearing on weekends, although it does get busy. I enjoy the ambiance more than 17th because (if there's a table) the spot is perfect for having a seat and relaxing over drinks rather than doing the standing around mean-mugging thing.
I had one special that I can barely remember, but I do remember a cheese soup that was great, and the entree was an angus burger that was better than any family restaurant I could go to. Honestly, I'm not there for the food however, and I'll be glad to stop by again soon.
The best place for beer in the valley, hands down!
The food is good especially the hummus, tuna, and calamari (which is not fried yay)
The only one downside and its a pretty big one is the douchy jackass server/bartender who apparently is a family member of the owner. He is very easy to spot, greased back hair, kinda fat, really annoying. He is holding the place down with his lack of manners and general jackassness. If he was fired, this place would be 5 stars.
Catching up on reviews....
This place has made my 2-a-month trips to the valley a lot more pleasant. I even changed hotels to be closer. Fantastic beer selection. A lot of folks complain about the beer prices, but the is not BMC and the like. Good craft brew costs money. The sandwiches are amazing. I am partial to the Taylor's Turkey or Drunken Salmon. Just a fantastic place.
Awesome staff, fantastic beers from all over the world (you WILL find a beer you love) and great food. I freaking loved my Johnny the Fox pizza which was a white pizza with chicken and red onions. Everyone at the table was jealous and wanted to steal a slice!!
One of my co-workers had the Humphy Bogart primavera which she absolutely loved, she said it had a lot of herbs and was really flavorful, one of the best vegetarian pastas she had ever had. Another had the Peter Lawford's Scampi which she said was awesome, not oily and just really well balanced. It came with garlic bread which was apparently SO good they had to order a side of it just to snack on.
Only downside is that while the beer is INCREDIBLE it's actually kind of expensive. More than a few of us were really surprised by the cost of it, and although it was worth it, it's not something you could do all the time. Definitely good for once in a while!!
I attended brunch there, and the food was OK, but not worth $25.  The prime rib was the only great item.  On their facebook, it said that the mimosas were $1 for brunch, but when we paid, they were $2.  They never brought us our drinks, the waitress took like 30 min to check on us.  When we went up to the bar to ask about our drinks, they said they were "out of glasses"--WHAT?!!  lol  There were lots of wine glasses, which they could've used, we didn't need the mimosa glass.  We ended up having to bring our own glass up to the bar to get refilled, the waitress forgot about us the entire time, and it wasn't that packed.  My friend had to request that they buy enough champagne, because she said last time, they ran out of champagne (at a brunch?  NO WAY!).  To top it off, I wanted a waffle for dessert and they were out of syrup.  =(  Â
I'll NEVER return for the brunch again. Â They served burnt friend shrimp, soggy eggs Benedict, waffles without syrup, cold, untoasted bagels, and they kept running out of basics like cocktail sauce for the shrimp/syrup for the made to order waffles. Â $25 NOT including drinks was a total rip-off, unless you're gonna eat $25 worth of prime rib (the only good item).
Waste of money. Â Never again. Â I will return for late night drinks, but NEVER for the brunch.
Deliciousness and friendly staff with a nice wine selection. I had the moscato and was impressed. I also had the Reuben- definitely rivals my favorite which comes from a deli in Minnesota called Cecil's. I would definitely recommend this venue for a date or an intimate group of friends. I will be heading back to try more wines. Stand by.
Review Source:If you like out of the ordinary in beer and atmosphere this place is great. It is a bit divey but you don't go here for fancy appointments; you go here for the beer. the staff is friendly and attentive and you can herf a nice cigar on the patio outside. I ran into one of my church members from El Paso that had relocated here and he said it is his favorite place. If you want cheap, ordinary food and drink go to Chili's
Review Source:Oh yes. My favorite place in this gawd-forsaken town known as McAllen. The Angeleno feels right at home here. A fantastic selection of beers on tap (you know how hard it is to get Dogfish Head 90-min on tap these days?), fantastic juke box, spicy ass pizza, brilliant paninis... I really, really love this place. If my company ever moves me out to McAllen permanently, you will find me here every single night, crying my sorrows into a delicious Racer 5.
Review Source:Completely under-staffed! Â I was excited about the outside patio atmosphere, sadly I ended up having to sit inside because the outside was packed. Also, I thought it was going to be more of a chill place but instead it ended up being yet another bar for the pretentious valley crowd....although I am giving it props for the Jenga! =)
My black velvet took 20 minutes to come out (how time consuming is it to mix guinness and harp??) at the end of the night it took over 25 minutes to get our tab....not the waiter's fault....he had around 10 tables for himself.
around $7 for a specialty beer mix.... not worth it.
Good happy hour prices though.
Vincent M summed it up when he put the Hat wearing bartended on his con list. I watched this guy refuse to serve water to patrons all night long. I feel that that is incredibly irresponsible. His comments to those asking ranged from "there are too many beers to serve for me to get you water" to  "we don't have any clean glasses". He should be fired.
Review Source:Amazing food (Never had anything bad here) and a great selection of beers, but the experience for me ends there. It's almost always busy (good for them) but the service is horrible. The young bartenders/waiters/resses don't have a fantastic work ethic, if you know what I mean. Sometimes it can take a while to get another drink, and even longer to pay your tab if there's more than 5 or 6 people at their tiny bar. The bathrooms are comically small, sometimes you're rubbing elbows, literally, with the guy you're peeing next to, but you get to walk through the kitchen sort of to get there. It reminds me of the movie Goodfellas sometimes. But not often, since there's not cases of beer and condiments everywhere in the kitchen in the movie.
Review Source:I'm pretty mixed about this place. I've only been there when I visit home on holidays or vacations. Each time is different.
Pros:
1. The Beer - The Valley has a gem here, and doesn't even know it. The selection is probably the best in the Valley. I shit you not.
2. The Price - What could easily be a $10 beer in Austin (or any other larger city) was only $6. Other beers were around $4. WTF, this is like bargain bin prices. Awesome.
3. The Music - I actually heard J.U.S.T.I.C.E. being played in there once. Now all they need is a Juke so I can play this kind of shiz all the time, and we're in business.
Cons:
1. The Patrons - Its like the next evolution of the cholos and fresas became fluent in English, self-aware, and only watched "Jersey Shore."
2. The Guy with the Stupid Hats - It happens eventually. A waiter/bartender that has too much fun hitting on chicks and forgets to, you know, actually do his fucking job. Everyone else working there is great, and I usually tip them very well. I don't know their names, but they deserve raises.
In the end, although its 3:2, I'll still give it 4 stars. Its a ballsy enterprise trying to actually open a good beer bar/pub in the Valley. Its probably one of the best selection you can find. The bartenders (except for Douche McGee and his hats) are great people. Tip them well!
This quickly became my go-to spot in McAllen when I had to spend a few weeks at home last year. An acquaintance and a friend both suggested I check it out when I posted on FB, looking for things to do while my mother was in the hospital, post visiting hours.
They have a plethora of beer on tap and even more in bottles. What used to be a parking lot next door has been turned into a pretty kick ass patio area with plenty of "community" seating, if you're brave enough to impinge on someone else's space. The tables are HUGE! Why not ask a table with only two people at it if you can join them (unless its evident that they're on a date or something)? Maybe you can make some friends in the process!
The wait staff is friendly. I was completely okay with bellying up to the bar alone for a couple beers and was engaged in conversation with Beth, the bar manager and, later, Mars, one of the servers. They're pretty knowledgeable about the beer selection and a few of the taps change semi-regularly, so when you go in, you could very well find a new favorite beer.
They're also open and thriving during Art Walk McAllen, though I don't remember which day of the month that falls on. They even have a second bar with a few kegs on the patio to ease the streaming masses.
I can't believe its taken me this long, almost a year, to review this place! My new fave beer place in McAllen!
If you're in McAllen and you're looking for a hip, laid back place to enjoy some beer, this is your place. Â An incredible selection of beers on tap and in the bottle. Â The food is amazing too. Â
I like the atmosphere at Roo's. Â The music is present but in the background. Â You can sit indoors or outdoors with your friends and have a conversation without having to scream over the music.
Up until a few years ago a Corona was about the most exotic beer you could find in this town. Fortunately for those who have a more discerning palate those days are over! This place has 44 beers on draught and approx 50+ available in bottle. Word is they're going to add a few more taps just in case that's not enough for you. Not sure what you want to drink? Just let the staff know what you're interested in and they can steer you in the right direction and give you a sample or two to make sure it's something that you like. (These guys know their beer!) If you're hell bent for a Bud Light you've come to the wrong place though. It's not even carried here. What you will find are various imports and some of the best craft beers from the good ole U S of A.
Hungry? So far I have not been disappointed with anything I have ordered. This is not your typical "pub grub". They have panninis, pizzas, pastas, salads & some great appetizers. Some of my favorites are the stuffed mushrooms, bruchetta, and asparagus wrapped in prosciutto. I could go on, but one last word on the food. The Ruben is outstandingl!
Inside you will find a dark wooden bar that was actually brought down here from an old bar in Virginia which is a nice touch. Â Several dark wood booths, tables & chairs and a sofa or two are available to sit on. Â On the walls you will find some interesting art created by local artists. Â If your food, beer and conversation with the friends you brought or the new ones you've just made aren't entertaining enough for you then help yourself to some of the games available free of charge. Jenga, dominoes, scrabble, shuffle board & darts will help you pass the time. Â Also, be sure to head out to the patio when the weather is nice. Â You'll find about 10 large tables, some shade and the before mentioned dart board out there.
So for those of you who have gone thirsty for a tasty brew for too long I suggest you get to Roosevelts asap!
I've got to respect a place in the Valley that more than 4 beers on draft. The last time I was in town, I refuse to go down to the 17th street nightmare. So, Roosevelt's is off the street a little and bit more chill, I think. Their menu looks tasty but GD expensive! Cute names though like the Audrey Hepburn salad or panini.
However, the one time I've been, they were out of at least 5 beers! My boyfriend was not so pleased when the waiter talked him out of a Guiness (a stout) for an IPA. Not the same and totally not equally tasty. Our Newcastles tasted soapy and the Blue Moon also had an equally yucky taste.
They have a great selection for the Valley but it's got nothing on places like the Flying Saucer in S.A, Austin, and Dallas (150 beers on draft, kids!). My black velvet (Guiness and CIder) was bit sweet for me and I got charged like $8 for that. Ouch, I guarantee ACE Pear isn't that much, friends.
The interior is a bit small and I appreciate the non-smoking! Thumbs up! They also have a small shuffleboard table and several Jenga sets.
If I still lived in the Valley, I may drink here but only during happy hour.
f-in loved it!!! It's not special or anything but I'd say it's a fine and divine place for people who love sipping boos with friends. It's always bouncing with folks who are either there to catch football, basketball games or just those looking for some leisure time with some old friends. The bar tending staff is nothing less than amicable. Quiz them on their beer & liquor terminology and they receive a 110%. They also offer specials on game nights such as $3 pints, $2 bottles, and $blank wells. I never saw the wells but I'm sure they have those as well.
The food is also yummy but if you're looking for more sizable portions then this is not the place for you to chow down. The pizza slices are like one-fourth the sizes of what you receive at the regular pizza joint. And the prices are such a ripoff. It's like $10 for the pizzas and you only get eight tiny slices along with a sauce in the middle. One of the most popular dishes is the John Dilinger's Ham and Bacon Pizza with Avocado Sauce. Now who else would offer such a unique variety? An who needs nachos when you have pizzas?? And cheap customers beware the prices only climb out from there for other entrees.
Overall, it's a very tranquil environment with chits and chats flying around so come and by, and bring a friend for a fun-filled evening
This place is really tasty, and has wonderful happy hours until 8pm with beers! Since I work down town it's pretty convenient to hop on over there and grab a beer or two before heading home!
You can choose from 35 unique microbrews and select imports on tap and many hard-to-find bottled beers from around the world. They offer one of the widest selections I've found!
I went to their grand opening a few weeks ago and got to enjoy some of their meals and food items for free. They have some really tasty paninis and great great veggie options too!
The outside area is nice if you like to smoke cigarettes, and they have space heaters, etc that keep it warm when it's cold. It's not really like that down here though.
The owners here are also really friendly, which is terrific! They created this place so they'd have somewhere to hang out, drink beer, and socialize with a crowd of young professionals.
I like this place every night except Art Walk night when it seems to turn into a big frat party! Fortunately they don't serve Budweiser so if you're looking for that don't bother! There is a Buffalo Wild Wings for you on 10th street where people are free to be obnoxious.
