I skipped the tea and coffee tonight, but I did have a fantastic light dinner.
Black bean chili - with so many fresh veggies that I didn't miss meat a bit. Very hot and  flavorful. Especially nice was the fact that the carrots weren't cooked to mush in the chili.
I also had a crepe - red peppers, goat cheese, spinach, and I don't remember what else. Also very good.
I wish I had room to try one of the sweet crepes and a cup of tea - maybe next time!
A great venue, but terrible service. Drinks are good, but you might as well a spin the drink wheel at the Bodega across the street because there's a good chance you'll end up with something you didn't order. The staff is very nice, but very forgetful. They also aren't very good at customer service when they mess up; expect an apology, but not an immediate fix.
Review Source:As coffee shops go, this is about as far from the Starbucks-minded set as you can get. This place is a locavore's paradise, featuring locally-made beers and local foods when possible. They have a pretty extensive and delicious vegetarian menu, particularly for a coffee shop.
Currently they save energy on Wednesday nights by going lights-out for several hours, during which time they sell some food items and drinks for a song. At least one CSA delivers here. They feature the work of local artists throughout the room, which is often available for purchase. Root Note also hosts beer tastings and a wide variety of other unique events for the region.
Overall, it's a very "green," tree-hugger vibe and the kind of place where you could hang out for hours and never feel rushed or in the way. I will say that their coffee and tea prices strike me as a little on the high end, but that doesn't keep me away. A nice place to tuck in and listen to some open-mic night performances or local music, which you can enjoy several nights a week.
The free wi-fi is unpredictable, often cutting out. Were it more dependable, I would be here far more often.
I really like the feel of the place, but I'm giving the coffeehouse 3.5 stars because the iced Chai and sundae I got were just OK.
It's been a while since I came back to my hometown. I had never been to The Root Note and decided to walk in. I ordered an iced Chai for $4. It was watered down and it just had no Chai flavor. I'm wondering how someone could make a Chai drink not taste good. Either you make a hot Chai latte with a powder base, add milk , and then cool it down with ice cubes. Or, you use a ready-made Chai drink, add milk and ice.
Thinking the iced latte was kind of a fluke, I got a white chocolate macadamia nut cookie sundae for $4. It's basically a cookie cut up into bite-sized pieces over a scoop of vanilla ice cream, all topped with whipped cream. I liked the cookie. But after I ate all the cookie pieces, I was just left with the vanilla ice cream. I wished I had some caramel sauce or chocolate sauce to finish off the ice cream.
Don't get me wrong. I wasn't happy with the latte or sundae, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't come back. I think it's a great place to relax.
