My family and I found this place while passing through Rosendale's cute main street after an apple picking afternoon. Â While we appreciated the lovely outdoor patio on a gorgeous fall day, as well as the friendly server, that's as much as the place offered for us. Â I'm giving this place an extra star because they have vegan options. Â Unfortunately, I have to say that the food was less inventive than I'd throw together in a hurry after a long day, with no energy to go shopping or really think about it. Â Simple black beans, red onions, Daiya cheese, and tortilla chips are by no means restaurant quality nachos. Â The tofu and tempeh were completely unseasoned. Â While it would do in a pinch, I was left wishing I'd driven the extra 10 minutes to Karma Road.
Review Source:Rosendale Cafe serves serviceable, if not particularly inspired vegetarian and vegan food.
There are a couple of gems on the menu, though, especially the vegan gyro special that has been turning up lately (please put this on the regular menu!). The tempeh reuben is quite good, too. The quesadilla is a little less tasty, but there's a nice, big portion for sharing. The beer list is always good.
Service can be very slow. Even when the place is empty, it can take a while for staff to bring food, check on drinks, etc.
The interior is a bit grungy, with local artists' work hanging on the walls. There is a little patio outside, which is preferable if the weather is nice. However, you are even more marooned, as far as service is concerned, when dining outside.
I have been to this place several times. I really enjoyed the food my first few times; I especially loved the black bean burrito. I was never impressed by the service, and the service during my last trip is one of the main reasons I will not go back. The restaurant was understaffed that night, which is something I can be sympathetic about, as a former waitress. However, there were no apologies for the slow service, and more attention was clearly given to other customers over my tabe. In addition to other mistakes, the waitress spilled red sauce on my new dress, barely apologized, and didn't really do anything (i.e. help me clean it, offer to pay for dry cleaning, or pay for at least part of my meal) to remedy the situation. To top everything off, this place never seems very clean. I have experienced dirty tables and silverware more than once here. I was willing to overlook these things for the food, but not anymore...
Review Source:Rosendale. What a cute little area to visit. Not too far from my old college so we decided to stop by here for a reasonable meal after a long day. One of my friends is a vegan and one is a vegetarian. So we were kinda limited to where we could eat. We needed a place where everyone had options. Rosedale Cafe had all of that!
I usually don't eat vegan food, but I'm always open to trying new things. I saw Black Bean Quesadillas and bingo. My favorite. There are some things I cannot say "no" to and that's quesadillas. I ordered a 1/2 size and wasn't sure if that was going to be enough and it definitely was. There was a roasted eggplant black bean special and I got that one. It not only looked healthy but so appetizing! It came with sour cream and the FRESHEST, most delicious salsa I've ever had. Hands down. The waitress (who was incredibly helpful and friendly) said they made it probably 10 minutes ago. Yum. The salsa was chock full their homemade sauce, japalenos, tomatoes, onion, cilantro, etc. I could have ate that by itself. They brought out water for us in mason jars (how cute is that?!) and it was such a cozy place to dine.
I recommend this place to everyone! Whether you're vegan, vegetarian, carnivore or just have special dieting restrictions... there will be something delicious for you to eat here.
I love the rosendale cafe
the food is good, the place is reasonably prices, SO COZY AND WARM, interesting art, queer-friendly staff (never been misgendered here), I get such a kick out of it every time, I always want to bring dates here to impress them
however, I have one serious gripe, I don't end up coming unless i'm sure I've got time and really want to catch up with someone, because this place, as amazing as it is, is SO SLOW. Like I really do encourage you to go, but I dont want you're experiences to be ruined by you missing an afternoon appointment or something. I went there once for dinner and was there for hours, not that I'm complaining at all, I enjoyed it, by my girlfriend was pissed when I tried to explain that, yes it really took that long to get out of there, and no I didn't stay for dessert.
Anyway though, if you want to spend the evening over a beer or a coffee and some great food in a snug, cool and cozy atmosphere, without breaking the bank or sacrificing taste or quality you should check it out.
Half the menu is vegan or can be, and if memory serves me, much of it is local as well.
My experience at The Rosendale Cafe can be described in one word, salty.
The food was salty.
The service was salty, bordering on surly.
I felt a little like I was in an episode of Portlandia, everything was just a little off.
There are a few good things, the interior is eclectic and fun. The live music was good, made better by a lively crowd. The beer selection is great, as are the desserts (the apple crisp was delicious and hearty).
I so wanted to love this place, too.
I soooo want to love the Rosendale Cafe AND I have in the past. Â But, my recent experience left we wanting for much, much more. Â I found the food and menu to be un-inspired. Â Vegetarian food can be out of this world with flavor and spice - but the cafe now is pretty much just serving simple Mexican-American dishes and fake meat sandwiches. Â It'll be a while before I go back. Â Hopefully, it'll regain it's enthusiasm for vegetarian food.
Review Source:My girlfriend and I visited this small town in particular to just eat here. It was somewhat sketchy with the reviews, but we figured we would give it a shot. Being that we spent the day in this town we ate lunch and then dinner here. In seeing the comments on bland food I can say that lunch was not all that exciting, however the almond joy cake saved it. Yet, our lunch order was very basic: brown rice and steamed veggies. So when returning for dinner we ordered more of a dish, and though it is slipping my mind the name, it was freaking awesome tasty! A fair review would say that this is such a cute place with a warm inviting feel, the service is friendly, and the menu has numerous options with personal touches. The art is a little dark on the walls, but you can tell the locals love this spot and as a visitor we very much appreciated it overall!
Review Source:The absolute best vegetarian food!!! Â We drive 40 minutes to get there once a week and are never disappointed. Â The food is excellent and the service is great too. Â The food may take awhile but it's fresh and well worth waiting for. Â Great natural sodas and nice bar selection too. Â The owner is also a cool guy who offers a spot light to new musicians. Â Singer/Songwriter night is a huge bonus!!
Review Source:My wife and I stopped in for lunch on the way back to NJ from farther upstate. Â We had the Reuben sandwiches with vegan cheese and they were delicious. Â We actually started with the spicy peanut noodles as and appetizer which was great too. Â This is a cute little place that seems to be great for many different types of occasions.
We will be back when we are in the area again!
I really wanted to love this place since it's close by and vegetarian. I was pretty disappointed though. My brother and I split vegan special quesadillas made with daiya, which were pretty great. But my no chicken salad wrap had no flavor or spice and odd texture and really just tasted off. I could barely get through it. I took it home to try it the next day, but still couldn't get through it. My brother's brown rice arame burger was okay, but super bland. The prices were good and our waitress was great. I'm willing to give it a second chance, maybe we just ordered badly.
Also there was a soundcheck going on for a folk band playing later that night. It was so loud we had to yell to hear each other talk and the owner(?) said it wasn't possible to turn it down. We switched tables, but it didn't help. It would have been awesome if they had turned it down, but if the food had been better I really wouldn't have cared at all.
i love this place. cozy atmosphere, incredible menu that is focused on the vegetarian fare (it does have meat options as well), great dessert selection. the tempeh ruben sandwich is comfort food to a T. i had a cream of mushroom soup one time that was so yummy that i wanted to swim in it. beers on tap are tasty, and the wine selection, while limited, is not terrible. the music is certainly a plus. the irish session was more professional than i was expecting, and was quite good. the music they play on the speakers is also fun. and, they also have wifi, so you can eat a delicious meal, enjoy a beverage, and play on the internets.
Review Source:I went here for lunch/brunch on a Sunday afternoon. Â The restaurant was pretty empty when we got there (only 2 or 3 tables had people at them), which was nice because I wanted to be able to have a nice long meal where we wouldn't be rushed. Â We arrived at noon, and were given both breakfast and lunch menus. Â Our server was nice and attentive. Â Our dishes did take a little while to come out, but, again, I was not in a hurry anyway. Â I ordered the Huevos Rancheros, which were really good. Â Everything tasted homemade. Â The prices all seemed very reasonable to me. Â Their menu had a nice selection of salads, soups, and sandwiches and they had a board listing many specials for the day. Â
Yes, there were a couple of dishes with real meat or seafood, but probably only 1 or 2. Â The rest of the menu was vegetarian and many of the dishes had some sort of meat substitute. Â Overall, this place had a laid-back atmosphere with home-made style food and was good for enjoying a leisurely meal.
Pretty yummy. Fab beer selection on tap. Try the hijiki burger (always on the menu) and the mock meatballs or seitan gyro (if available on the specials). Â Save room for dessert, vegan options available.
I am not into the singer songwriter thing, and will skip the live nights when it isn't the celtic drop in session.
Great Food! Great Atmosphere! Excellent Music!
I had a wonderful experience at the Rosendale Cafe last night. Â The host squeezed one more table on the garden patio so my date and I could enjoy the live music. We didn't mind the relaxed euro-style service because the food, atmosphere, and music were so great. The soups are made daily and were delicious. The gazpacho was a perfect mix of refreshing acid profile with a kick of heat to finish. Â My girlfriend and I shared the seitan gyro and the house salad w/ chevere for an entree. Â The gyro is fun vegetarian interpretation of the classic greek wrap. Â I would recommend adding chevere to the gyro if your not vegan. We both added chevere to the gyro from the ample side were were served with our salad and it put the gyro over the top. The garden salad was fresh and the Japanese dressing is a must. Â The key-lime pie was a delicious finish to a great evening, not only did it pair nicely with the Flying Dog pale ale I select from the 5 craft brews on tap but the homemade gram-cracker crust is the best I have ever had. Â
Thanks for a great evening!
Wandered over to Rosendale for the first time a couple weeks ago in the rain, and found myself walking down Main Street, and absolutely had to try food in the area. Lucky for me, I chose Rosendale Cafe! My waitress was a sweetheart, and I ordered the soup of the day, cream of spinach-which has made it onto my "last meal" list, and I also got the Fakkin' [Bacon] Lettuce Tomato (FLT) sandwich-also unbelievable!!!! First time I've ever enjoyed eating not real bacon!!! The sauce or dressing or whatever they  used on it was amazing, too. Looking forward to another Rosendale visit just for this cafe!
Review Source:The Rosendale Cafe is the main reason I moved to Rosendale. Â I love this place because of its relaxed setting and hearty, healthy food.
The menu is pretty large, with a meandering selection of food that doesn't really have a specific theme. Â There are a number of Mexican dishes, with a few Italian and the occasional Asian offerings. Â None are very authentic to their origins, but are rather simplified vegetarian and vegan interpretations. Â I find most of the dishes tasty and nourishing, and walk away with a wholesome, satisfied feeling. Â If you want daring and complex foods made by master chefs (or at least the illusion of that!), then this place is definitely not for you.
The staff is friendly and unpretentious. Â I think this makes it feel like you're getting a meal from family and friends, rather than servants who have to wear matching uniforms and read from a script. Â Maybe this is also why the service can sometimes be slow or erratic, but I think it overall makes for a less stressful experience than most restaurants. Â They've also just revamped their outdoor patio with a cute and funky aesthetic, but I haven't eaten out there yet.
I should also probably mention that the musical performances on some weekends are all top notch. Â I think the cozy environment attracts musicians who would normally not play such a small, local venue like this.
I highly recommend the Rosendale Cafe to those looking for good basic vegetarian food in an easygoing atmosphere.
Our lunch at the Rosendale Cafe was so disappointing. We chose to go there because we were excited about the prospect of a vegetarian restaurant in a town we had never visited. We will travel for vegetarian/vegan food especially if that is the genre of the restaurant but despite its name the Rosendale Cafe is not vegetarian. They had both turkey and tuna on the menu as offerings. Not faux but vrai. Tsk tsk. And a major turn off. One of the pleasures for me going to a veggie restaurant is that the entire menu is fair game. It can be frustrating to go somewhere and be limited but so be it. But to haul tukis and be let down, bummer. My lunch, a Zen Platter for $13.95 (steamed veggie/tofu/seaweed) was so bland and uninspired. Certainly not the kind of fare a passionate veggie would expect or make. I can cut up tofu too.
So in short, not veggie. It's like being a little pregnant, LOL. It is veggie friendly but not vegetarian.
Fail. :((( Luckily there were other Rosendale businesses to make our jaunty there  worthwhile.

What a surprise to find a vegetarian restaurant while taking a day trip in Rosendale. Â Their sign out front which is proudly displayed clearly shows it to be a vegetarian restaurant which was welcomed to us since my wife is vegan and I am a pescetarian. Â The establishment is charming although a little dated and seating was open choice.
The menu offered a fair amount of vegetarian and vegan dishes but offered Tuna and Turkey Dogs on the menu with an Organic Turkey Burger as a daily special. Â To clarify the server was asked if the Tuna and Turkey Burgers where in fact meat. Â She confirmed that they are the only MEAT products served. Â This was a great disappointment since it clearly states on their sign that they are a vegetarian restaurant. Â
Although disappointed but very hungry after our long drive to the area we ordered vegan meals. Â I started with a cup of Black Bean Chili and for my main course chose the Brown Rice Arame Burger with coleslaw and an iced tea. Â The drinks and starters came out within a reasonable amount of time as did our main course. Â
The Black Bean Chili was served over brown rice and topped with what appeared to be fresh cut tomato, onion and jalapeno. Â The flavor was just OK although the beans used tasted like they are canned beans and a little mushy. Â The server forgot to bring out ketchup so I asked if they had Organic Ketchup. Â She replied they had Heinz to which I asked is it the one without the High Fructose Corn Syrup to which she made a face. Â She then went to the kitchen and came out saying that it did contain HFCS.
I then returned to my meal and was disappointed that the meal lacked flavor and was nothing more that mush on toast with tomato and onion. Â The Coleslaw was just as flavorless with no thought or passion in its preparation. Â Who knows if they only had Organic Heinz Ketchup maybe that would have improved the flavor of the Arame Burger but I doubt it. Â
Shame On You Rosendale Cafe for Calling Yourself Vegetarian When You Serve MEAT PRODUCTS.
The Rosendale Cafe
Funky Vegetarian Cafe
Good Entrees, Some REAL good.
Corn and Mushroom Quesadilla, Mission Burrito, Arame Burger Wrap.
Great Desserts.
The Best thing though that the Cafe does is present music. Ive been attending shows for a long time and some of the best IN ANY VENUE have been at the Rosendale Cafe.
