Took a spontaneous drive up to San Clemente from San Diego & picked the first cafe that came up. The Sugar Shack was lovely and comfortable. Nothing out of the ordinary for a "beach-side" cafe. Typical, although nice. Ordered the "C-Dragon" and the "Surfrider". Â The service was good, our food was nice, and our waitress was sweet.
They close at 2:30 but serve breakfast all the while which is great. It was a darling place to stop.
We stopped in early most of the other breakfast places were not opened yet. It's an older place but has a homeie feel to it. The staff there was great. I had the chicken fried stake with biscuits and gravy. It was very good. My date had bacon and eggs with a cinnamon roll, and let me tell you...I'm not into sweets, but Oh My SOOOO GOOD you must have one.
Review Source:In 3 visits, Rose's Sugar Shack became my favorite breakfast spot in Orange County. Â First, our server, Janet, is the friendliest waitress I have ever seen. I wanted to take her home, but my breakfast companion wouldn't let me. Second, the French toast was probably the best I've ever had. Third, I had a cinnamon roll the size of my home town. Fourth, The Zorba. Just go order it. Trust. Seriously. Order it.
Review Source:So the food is pretty good and the portions were big. The hashbrowns were great and made differently than most places. The cinnamon roll was a bit of a let down because it had so much potential! Unfortunately they put the icing on and then... micro-waved it. The bun came out with hardened icing and the bun was all mushy. Microwaves ruin food all of the time and this was no different. The prices were way too high. I paid $13 for eggs, hashnrowns, bacon and a cinnamon roll. If the prices were lower I would come back.
Oh and the cook got into a fight with the manager right in front of me. She did apologize and was very nice all in all.
Great breakfast stop! I would frequent here at least twice a week when I lived in San Clemente, but now that I'm in Carlsbad, the visits have been few and far between. One thing is for sure, whenever I walk in, they remember my name and what I want for breakie or lunch!
It can get busy on the weekends, so be patient, it's worth the wait! Especially the Cinnamon buns....definitely a must!!!
Been about 2 years since I've been in, but still have to say something about the experience. Â The service is THE BEST I've ever had! Â Even if you've only been once, they still remember your face, and talk to you like a friend. Â Which is one of the reasons my roomie and I became such regulars until we moved! Â They're usually very busy, but you never feel ignored. Â
Cinnamon roll is HUGE! Â Favorite thing is definitely the C Scramble: Biscuits and gravy w/ bell peppers, onion and ham w/ a side of hash browns. Â Amazing gravy! Â You drool when they set it in front of you! Â And the hash browns are different than I've had anywhere else, they seem like they're fresh grated, they're thick and not burned to a crisp like dennys. Â They're perfection! Â Only thing is, sometimes I'd leave w/ somewhat of a stomach ache. Â I think it might be the oil or something, bc no place else makes me feel like that. Â But, everything else is SO GOOD I'll take a tummy ache and some Pepto almost any day!
I've been coming to Rose's Sugar Shack for around 10 years, and I always have a great breakfast when I visit. Â
The Cinnamon Roll is to die for! Â And if you're an avid coffee drinker (like myself) you'll see no shortage of refills to your mug. Â Give Rose's a try.. but don't come down to a beach town, expecting a 5 star resort breakfast. Â If you come expecting good food and a good time, I bet you won't be disappointed! Â [And order a Cinnamon Roll!]
I've came here twice already for lunch. Great service, pretty cheap in prices. They make breakfast all day too.
The bad thing about this place is their bathroom. Probably one of the worst I've encountered. You may want to do your business before and/or after your visit here because that bathroom is toxic in nature. You would think that the San Onofre reactors that are only a few miles away is a danger zone, but this bathroom is a breeding zone for some of the worst biological hazards that mankind has ever made.
Sure, I would come back. They have a mean ass patty melt that just melts in your mouth, so juicy, so oily, and it's good for you too. And again, the service is great. Family owned and the locals just keep coming back for more.
Maybe the locals keep coming back due to that hypnotic smell when enter their bathroom. Hmm interesting. You may want to look into that. Possibly a Mythbusters episode.
I got the "surfer" which is basically equivalent to an "every day value slam" at Denny's and it was pretty good. As good as Denny's version. The only problem is that it was $8 instead of $4 like at Denny's. The food here is pretty good, but I'm always looking for good deals and they are not located here.
Review Source:I hardly ever give places a bad review because I love food! My sandwich was decent but I'm appalled that you would have to spend about $3 extra in order to sub a salad for fries. How much does lettuce and a little dressing really cost? Plus I had to spend about $3 extra for a little avocado on my already $7 or so sandwich. My son got the flapjacks and they were tough and chewy without that great sweet flavor of normal pancakes.
The food was okay, the waitress was friendly, the place was nice and clean but it is by far over priced and not worth it!
We heard good things about this place and decided to give it a shot for a Sunday breakfast.
Service was good and the waitress a real sweetheart. No complaints there. The prices were a little high for the fare, but we can live with that if the quality justifies it. Not the case here.
The food arrived very fast. Nice surprise... until we realized why.
My bacon/cheese omelet was undercooked, greasy, and disgusting. The omelet's entire center was a golden ooze of slimy, uncooked egg. The hash browns were half-raw, swimming in grease and had a strong "fishy" taste-- obviously cooked on a dirty grill.
My wife's veggie/egg plate was slightly better but also undercooked and bland overall. Her potatoes were just like mine-- disgusting.
The toast and coffee (just plain old coffee) were the best parts of the meal. That and the waitress.
In sum, this place may be okay if you're starved after a hard surf or a long drive. Everyone else would do better somewhere else.
Ok first off our waitress here was a sweetheart. Also the food was ok, but the hash browns were great.
I am giving a low rating because shortly after eating at this establishment, fraudulent charges of purchases at a women's store appeared on my credit card.
I have - for years - used cash wherever I go, and whenever I can. This was literally the first transaction using my credit card at a retail outlet in years. The timing is too suspicious. The fraud must have been linked to Sugar Shack.
To be clear, they either have unsafe credit card practices and someone went through their trash to obtain it, or have an unscrupulous employee.
I would give 1-star but because our waitress was such a sweetheart I gave them two.

Edit: People at the sugar shack are making multiple accounts to harass and threaten me due to bad review. Childish practice from a business to harass and threaten people for giving their opinion on an opinion driven review site. Changing review to 1 star.
From the owner of Sugar Shack: Hi, My name is Christina  and I own the sugarshack cafe.  I feel you have defamed and slander my name and business practices.  You will be hearing from lawyer!
If you you any questions on my business contact us not the spreading lies to others
This place is G-R-E-A-T! The nicest waitress, and GREAT food. Every time im going or coming from San Diego i make sure to stop here. The service is Wonderful, the food is yummy and the Prices are very fair. What more can you ask for??
I even left my sunglasses there once before and they made sure to get them back to me even after closing time.
A+ WORK
I dream wonderful dreams of this place, wonderful early morning freezing cold, hot coffee, yummy eggs, super cinnamon roll dreams of this place. Â If it's called 'The Sugar Shack' and it looks like a shack and you've just spent 6 early morning hours catching waves, well then it's a piece of heaven and you should stop. Â
I will probably never know whether it is as good as I remember my brain was fogged with ocean air and I was starving, but in my dreams I love this place and I think you will too!
We've been twice for breakfast and both times the service seemed overwhelmed even though it wasn't very crowded. In fact, we were the *only* table the second time we were there--and the waitress was harried (nice, but frazzled and I couldn't imagine why). I love "hole in the walls" for breakfast but the Sugar Shack is dilapidated and dirty. Fox News blaring in the background does not add to the atmosphere. Â
With all that, the food is ok. Not bad, not good, just a standard breakfast that doesn't suck. It's a bit overpriced. The food would have to be omg-best-breakfast-ever to make it worth the while to eat there... and it's not. So, I won't be back.
Of course I Yelped this place before I went and I can see why they have a overall 3 1/2 stars.
It's not bad and it's not great. The food is a bit over priced for what you get. We went with a group of eight so it was nice that even though it is very small they could accommodate us.
Our waitress was EXTREMELY nice! She even gave us some info of some of the things that were going on in the city that day.
They do have a Cinnamon roll the size of my head if you love sugar I suggest you try it... I had to have one bite...it was a bit much for me.
Un. Im. Pressed.
So perhaps we weren't in our finest form -- coming off a beachside, alcohol-fueled, camping trip, we needed sustenance and coffee. We had dogs, so outdoor seating was the only requirement. But a quick meal doesn't seem that complex for a breakfast joint, half-empty on a Sunday. Our waitress was quite attentive, but after her fifth or sixth stop to see if we wanted anything, I had to bite my tongue to keep from saying "yes, we want our food." Â I think she could tell by sight that we were not to be trifled with, and stopped asking after 3 icy glares met her question. Â
Ok, if you're gonna take 20-30 minutes to serve up 3 variations on eggs and hash browns, they best be delicious. They were not. Greasy, over done piles of food that were neither visually appealing nor pleasant to eat. Grease seemed to be the main ingredient. Â
My huevos rancheros was a mound of salsa verde, one egg, a pile of cheese on a corn tortilla and some sloppy beans and rice in heaps. And apparently this is the sort of establishment that will charge you $1.50 for sour cream and not tell you about the charge. The owner's half assed explanation about the economy really didn't cut it, you could at least tell me about charges on extras. A $53 breakfast this was not, and yet somehow that's what three people paid. Â Intolerable. Â Watching Pedros tacos doing a brisk business of breakfast burritos and fish tacos just added insult to injury. Should have known...
Stopped here on my way back from San Diego. Me and the boy were seated right away and were seated right next to the wall mirror where yuppies and surfers alike would slow down to check themselves out in the mirror. Our waitress was a little spacey but one may call her quaint. I ordered the zorba which is a delish Greek inspired breakfast meal. Well seasoned, and very satisfying. I would have to agree that the hash browns are not the greatest; it was like eating a potato cake. My boyfriend had the standard Denver omelet which was alright with biscuits and gravy. What a minute, I mean gravy with biscuits. It was served in a bowl! Overall cute place but probably won't make a point to stop there next time I am in the area.
Review Source:It's neat little place to eat and people watch on the street if you sit outside. The food was okay and the service was a little slow and they were in no hurry to sit us when they weren't really that busy. Have to say I love the surfer decorating atmosphere. Perfect location for such a little place too. That is, close to the ocean.
Review Source:I sometimes work in the area and I have seen this place over and over again wondering if it is any good. Â I finally stopped in today with a friend because I was in serious starvation city and wanted to commit carbicide. Â We were seated right away, the place was pretty empty, it was a Monday morning after all. Â
It took a while to look over the menu and decide, the waitress came by to check on us quite a few times until we ordered. Â The food was pretty good, standard homecooked little restaurant fare. Â This seems like a place I would go to eat with my grandparents, and that's a-okay with me. Â I like little local places.
It was decently priced for the area, parking was fine since the place only had like 2 other tables when I arrived. Â Fast service, which was great! Â would go to again.
My wife and I have been coming here since long before she was my wife. Â It holds quite a few good memories, and if I were to include that in the rating this would be a 5, but my personal history matters not to most of you reading this.... :P
This is a cool little surf diner with pretty good food. Â The service is always very friendly, the food is always good. Â Nothing fancy, just good old fashioned diner food with a surf twist. Â Sit on the upper patio if it is free and the weather permits. Â You should know that sparrows and sometimes squirrels will come visit you.
Items to get:
***We've only gotten the breakfast items here***
The Surf King
Benny The Bum Omelet
The Zorba
The Coffee
Item to avoid:
I've had a few bad experiences with the little prepackaged shots of cream for your coffee here. Â If you like cream for your coffee, just order some fresh cream with it.
First and foremost, I LOVE any place that extends a warm welcome to military families. It is sincerely appreciated, and the Sugar Shack is proud to represent in that manner.
The food was good.
Although, after having lived in SC for over 4 years and hearing constant praise of this place- I finally visited the last year that I lived there... and... apparently the people that praised the place didn't make their way into Sunrise Cafe yet.
Not to mention that we were one of two occupied tables- and the area we wanted to be seated in was cordened off. Just before our food was served, we realized why when one of the employees (that was sitting up there), slammed a rolled up newspaper several times in a row... more than a few times.... you figure it out. Oh, and I almost forgot that we also watched him spray an aerosol several times.
Now, I had enjoyed food many times at the Irvine Spectrum and never questioned the integrity of the kitchens. Until one night I closed the Crazy Horse (before it moved), and my boyfriend and I were resting our tired feet in the middle of the food court. As we sat there, the security crews started to flush people out, and along with them were the night cleaning crews with the big sweepers... and leading the way were the streams of roaches running away. I had never been so horrified in my life as my boyfriend and I high tailed it out, me in my open toed high heels, screeching every time one tried to catch a ride on my foot.
That night, I just came to terms with the idea that if such a pretty, new, and well kept establishment like the Spectrum was incredulously infested with vermin- then probably, even my favorite little, places would probably just as vulnerable, if not more.
But, I'm sorry- the fact that it was 2 in the afternoon, on a bright and sunny day, and they were bold enough to run out in the presence of a human... didn't sit well with me.
The waitress noticed that we noticed- and she quickly said it was JUST in that seating area, and that it had just recently got to that point.
ookay.
I can't give it 1 star, I only ate there the one time, and they were so completely nice. And who knows? Maybe what the waitress said was the actual, solid truth.
Meh, I stopped here with a group of friends yesterday while on a 30 mile bike ride.
The outdoor seating reeled us in. It had a pretty cool vibe.
The service was alright, kinda slow. I was starving by the time the waitress took our order.
I got the "vegetarian rage something or other" which was interesting.
The portions are large so come here with your appetite!
all in all, this place is ok.
One of a number of good little places for breakfast in San Clemente. Â Brought mom here and she seemed happy with her poached eggs, bacon, toast, and liked the coffee. Â Service was slow at the start, but once our waitress got going, it was spot on, with water and coffee refills before we asked. Â I got the greek style breakfast (Zorba) I think it was called, and it was just what I needed to make it breakfast and lunch. Â We'll be back.
Review Source:There's this cute little shack, across the tracks
And everybody calls it the Sugar Shack. (circus music follows)
After a long surf, you just don't want to drag salt, sand, seaweed & Sex Wax into the Ritz Carlton Dana Point, ya know (the local yuppie surf Nazi's that own Salt Creek might just get offended). So, as an alternate to the normal (Denny's, Tommy's, IHOP), there's this cute little place that answers the post-surf munchies and it's called the Sugar Shack. The gals here have been working this place for years and they're still cute as hell, always warm & friendly and it'll remind you of times long past. Regular coffee is served so don't even try speaking a foreign language to them ala Starbucks. It's a simple "Coffee, please." (cream and sugar at the table). They have a few specialty breakfast items, mostly Greek and Mediterranean, but not much else off the menu and expect to hear a lot of "Two eggs sunny side up, bacon and wheat toast" orders, you know, like the days before you needed McDonalds. No Bearnaise sauce here and no snooty attitudes either.
It's a run-down, squeaky wood-framed, one stinking little bathroom kind of joint but when you've burned up 5000 calories surfing nearby Trestles and you're tired of the norm, these gals will put a smile on your face and hand you a cuppa the real thing. Fuck the Ritz. Try the Longboard veggie omelet and enjoy what's left of the morning before hopping onto the I-5 north to join the traffic-mad swirl of the motorized masses.

I came across this place several years ago on a mini road trip down PCH with my girlfriend at the time. Â I've only returned a handful of times throughout the years but each time I do I always leave smiling. Â
I've only been there for the breakfast but have to say it's better than most any other diner out there (Denny's, IHOP, etc..) Â The atmosphere at the Sugar Shack is comfortable and cozy. Â The service is good and the pace here is laid back. Â If you're not too far (I traveled up from Santa Ana) it's definitely worth a visit!
Sugar, Sugar, Sugar! The restaurant itself is totally untraditional, the patio in the back is cute but rustic, you can sit on the side of the restaurant which is interesting and the servers are very nice and friendly. The breakfast is good, not as good as others but decent enough and the costs are cheap!
Review Source:Well, this is your perfect typical, friendly diner. Â I would say they excel at breakfast, even though it is not perfect, it is worth it. Â Especially the big-as-your-face cinnamon roll. Â This is not a joke. Â In addition, their prices are really cheap, especially if you get there early. Â The service is like your are being waited on by family (the friendly side of the family). Â Enjoy!
