Not bad. Pay the money for floor seats, if it makes sense.  The 200 rows in the back were just too far.

Came here for Sunset with Excision as a headliner.  Venue was spacious and security was nice enough.  Upstairs was dope, the bathrooms were much nicer than the bottom floor ones.  It was nice to be able to kinda relax on the second floor and watch everything from the balcony as well.  All in all, enjoyable experience!

We saw Jackson Browne there tonight and had a wonderful time. I use to go see the circus there as a child and have great memories of the place. They have restored it to its original glory. Great place to see bands. It's like you are in an intimate club. Not a bad seat in the house. What impressed me most are how nice all of the employees are. Will be going there again for sure!

I went there only once and never want to go back there to see any show. I was shocked to see some world class performers like Yanni and Il Divo had shows in this place recently. At most, this place can be categorized as a school auditorium. City of San Jose should demolish it and build a better venue for concerts. The nearby Center for the Performing Art is much better.

Came to watch the Legend of Zelda Symphony.  This auditorium, like some of the other reviewers have mentioned, reminded me of a school gym.  It's not very huge, not very updated.  We had floor seats which was like putting out rows of fold-out chairs on the gym floor.  Good thing there were a few big screens to look at that were elevated high.  I could not imagine watching a play in this auditorium.

The Civic center is just what it sounds like- a big high school-looking auditorium with a huge wooden center floor, stage, and mezzanine seats. Not glamorous or anything (a la Orpheum or something like it) but it gets the job done depending on what you are seeing there. I saw a Symphony, so it didn't really matter the setup or where I was sitting because the sound quality was great even from far away. I wouldn't really want to see a stage productio (musical, play, etc.) here, though. The main level seats were mostly collapsible chairs...the upper level were standard stadium style theater seats. They were fine except that the rows were SO steep. I mean, inching past people to get to my seat seemed a precarious endeavor to say the least! I thought with just a misstep, I would plummet down onto several rows of people and fall over the edge or something! Wowsa!

Anyhow, parking is kind of confusing if you've never been here before because there aren't any garages right next to the entrance or even across, you just kind of half to turn down the next street and enter the first garage you see (at least there are several within walking distance).

There are also multiple concession stands, at least one on each level where you can get your standard movie theater-style food but they also have wine and beer, and one spot is a full bar. They also let you bring your drinks into the seating area.

Overall, it was ...ok. But if you have the option to see the same show in San Francisco, I'd do that.

We went to the Civic for a symphony, and it was great. The acoustics were amazing, but the Civic isn't a very big place, so that helped.
Folding chairs were put on the floor to form 6 additional sections, but it was comfy.

I was here last night for The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses, and I had a really great time. However, while I wouldn't say that this is a terrible venue in the least, I will say that it honestly reminded me of my elementary school's auditorium.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love old theaters (I would say I prefer them), but the Civic just fells a tad bit... unloved. I don't know how to put it better than that, but it just feels like as it's getting older, it's not being cared for as lovingly as some of the older theaters I've been to in the Bay Area. Also, be wary that the balcony seating, while it's by far the best seat in the house (we had an amazing view of the stage and all three screens) has extremely cramped, steep seating. A bit of tight rope act when you're getting to your seat in heels.

Also, don't bother getting refreshments here - my brother paid four dollars for a small bottle of water. I don't even know if I paid that much for water in Disneyland.

The show itself was as amazing as the first time I saw it at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, and there was even some music that was totally new and that they hadn't played at the first show. The sound in the Civic is wonderful, and the strains of the symphony were clear as a bell, but the symphony's chorus was really hard to hear at times, which wasn't a problem in San Francisco.

And though this wasn't the fault of the Civic at all, I had really appreciated that at the show in San Francisco, everyone made the effort to dress sharp and looked really nice; even though there were still cosplayers, it didn't matter that this was an event attended by gamers, everyone knew this was a symphony and that they should clean up a bit. It was a different story at the Civic, with most people in jeans and casual wear, which was disappointing.

Overall, the show itself was incredible and didn't disappoint, but the venue wasn't the greatest. The show at Davies Symphony Hall was a better experience than at the Civic.

Why can't every single rave be at the SJ Civic Auditorium? I originally remember this place from my high school days when we would have our massive battle of the classes event known as FANTASTICS at this venue. Fast forward to early 20's young adult mode and this place is a raver's fantasy party land. First of all, thank you SC Vital for bringing big name acts such as Dada Life and Arty to a reduced size venue in SJ! As for the venue itself, security is SUPER chill and don't TSA status search you, so getting that flask in is not a hard task at all. The sound system is pretty cool, you can definitely feel the bass traveling through every inch of your body. Loved that the venue upgraded from 1 bar area to 2 bar areas and reserved the entire upper deck for the 21 and over peoples. Also, kuddos to the bright person in charge that decided to hand out free water for all of us hardcore party goers to stay hydrated. Overall, if you get the opportunity to check out an event here, then dooooo it!

They ignore requests to be removed from their email notice list.

Over the last 3 months, I've received 5 different pieces of unsolicited spam for events at SJ Civic from their marketing partner: <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsjtix.com&s=d8b5d329da39501d0a9d718538188fc44282b6360d901e1a36a193904ac1b9f7" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://sjtix.com</a>.  On each occasion, I've responded to the listed email addresses: <a href="mailto:unsubscribe-157@pacmail.em.marketinghq.net">unsubscribe-157@pacmail.…</a> & <a href="mailto:reply-731@tm.marketinghq.net">reply-731@tm.marketinghq…</a>, and on each occasion I received no reply and I continue to receive new notices to this day.  On two separate occasions, I phoned in to SJ Civic and spoke with a member of the office staff.  Each time they told me they "didn't know how often the unsubscribe lists get updated", and they'd pass along my complaint.  As of today (11/15/2012) I am still receiving new emails.

I'm calling SJ Civic out for this as they're responsible for the behavior of the business partners they hire to act on their behalf.  Fire your email guy... he sucks.

We came here to see George Lopez. He was the first person to perform here since they completed the renovations. I thought the place was cute. This 80's cover band, Night Rider, opened for him and the sound was good, not muffled at all. It wasn't a full-on lights-out opener since people were still streaming in. The place is a smaller venue. We were seated in Section 103, row L, which is the front section to the left if you're facing the stage. We were able to see George Lopez without having to look at the large screen monitors. The seats are folded but cushioned so comfortable and they were shoulder stacked so we were able to look between the people's head's in front of us without bobbing back and forth all night. Cute venue if you're looking for a more personal venue. We'd come back. Just don't park in the Convention Center parking lot across the street. They charge by the 20 mins (instead of a flat fee) and there is only one exit that is connected to a stop light so it took us 45 minutes just to get out.

This place is OK with me.  I agree that it feels like a high school gym and it probably would be pretty annoying when crowded.  But, It's not huge so the seats in the back are pretty good.  The ones on the side don't have a great view.  Also, the seats are high enough above the row in front of you, but there's not a lot of space so your legs are pressed up against them.  This could be a problem if all seats are full.

I'm most familiar with this place from the Fanime concerts.  It works well for them because they're not horribly crowded and you can switch from floor standing/floor seating/balcony as you wish.  Also, I saw Snow Patrol here and it does have very good sound, less good acoustics.

Sat in the balcony for a concert recently.
The angle was great. I was sure glad to be sitting up there because I didn't have to dodge heads for a good view of the stage like some of the people on the orchestra floor had to.
Balcony seating for concerts is highly recommended.
My only minor complaint is that there is no dedicated parking facility and that the parking ramps that exist in that area are somewhat far away.

Attended the Yanni concert last week and paid for good seats in the orchestra section. Concert was superb but the venue was not.
Seating arrangement is EXTREMELY poor - all seats are at one level. And they are not staggered -  very bad because we had some tall folks in both of the two rows ahead of us. My neck was sore from straining to look around - both to the left and right of them. Also the seats are uncomfortable chairs with plastic cup holders that many of us kept hitting.
If one pays a high price, would expect provide a quality venue. The Civic is not.
    Will not go back there.

I don't understand why this place has such low stars and reviews. I came here last night with my mumsy to see her favorite pop/opera music band Il Divo. The venue was great, small and cozy so your very intimate with the band your watching, nice and cool in there so not everyone's body heat is killing you and the staff was very friendly. Although I admit the big projector screens were a bit bad quality, maybe they just need to replace it but the place is very small so it's not like you can't see anything. The snackbar is great also, they serve delicious food, I had the Fish Tacos and I was a bit intimated at first but it was freaking good! And also the venue is very walk able close by a public parking area which was only $7 (Not too bad!) so you don't have to worry about walking miles and miles away especially if your a lady and have heels like my mummy and I did. Overall, great time, great venue, great food and an AMAZING band!

Came here for Il Divo concert n was disappointed by the venue quality. The facility was too old for world concerts. The room was too hot and stage lightings were done poorly so you can't see the singers clearly on the big screen.

I saw "The Dukes of September" here and I am sorry I did. I would give the Dukes an "A" for effort but for things out of their control the overall concert garners a "C."

First, they should have played a different venue as the San Jose Civic Auditorium is nothing more than an oversized gymnasium. Perhaps, this was a great venue during earlier times but it just does not compare to today's music venues. The place has great curb appeal but the inside leaves a lot to be desired: the chairs are old, the place lacks charm, the concession stands are outdated, the wines are horrible and most importantly the acoustics are absolutely horrible and even Donald Fagen's musicians could not overcome it.

With respect to the performance, let's face it, Donald Fagen and his musicians will always dominate a performance because of his many Steely Dan and solo hits. To this end, I would suggest (and who am I to suggest anything to Donald Fagen) that during future performances Donald sing his solo and Steely Dan hits and his co-performers sing their hits. Although it is admirable to sing songs from performers that they grew up with it didn't work and frustrates the audience that long to hear hit material.

The fact that the Google Street view picture of this place shows "Mary Kay Career Conference" on their billboard should give you an idea of what kind of venue this is.

We saw Celtic Woman here a few years ago, my wife is a fan of theirs.

Seating was confusing due to duplicated seat and section numbers (multiple seat P11s on opposite sides of the auditorium) and the fact that the row and section numbers were written on the floor in chalk. Floor seats were folding chairs, the kind you'd expect to find at bingo in a church basement, not at an $85 a ticket concert.

Some of the employees were incredibly rude, particularly the "floor manager". General decor and colors were tacky. We were supposed to be the first row in our section but they "improvised" a row in front of us due to the fact that they had no handicapped accessible seating.

We were given no notice when intermission was over, about 1/3 of the people were still outside the auditorium when the music started again and missed the first song after intermission. Watching a concert at this venue was an extremely unpleasant experience that really put a damper on our enjoyment of the music.

Spent a lot on tickets and merchandise while we were there (as planned and expected).  Phineas and Ferb production was great, kids had a blast.  While inside and on our way out our 6 year old has to use the bathroom (many did after a production for kids that sells huge drinks at $10 a pop). THEY WON'T ALLOW IT!  It was a 4pm show on a Sunday and the last one for the day so it's not like they only had an hour to clear things up for the next event. They told everyone to use the porto-potty around the corner...you know the one in the middle of downtown, which was a pay one and was broken by the way.  So even though you haven't left the building the bathrooms are off limits. Basically " Ya thanks for the money now get the F out."  Whatever you're trying to see make the drive and see it at a different venue. Besides failing customer service 101, the venue needs a severe update.   Lesson learned.

Went on 11/28 for the Mannheim Steamroller show.   Couldn't agree more with Melanie C's comments.   The place was freezing (!) - in fact the security guy told me that he "heard" the heater had been "out/broken" for a few days...!   Looks like maybe it had been refurbished in the last 3-5 years, but it was evident the infrastructure was not part of that.  Bring a heavy jacket to wear if you go to this place!

It's an auditorium. I don't have high expectations and I wouldn't typically think to review. Except for the things that stood out as impeding our enjoyment of the show that  want to be voiced.

We paid a little extra for seats closer to the stage, in the balcony. We knew this would mean turning our heads rather than looking straight on, but thought it was worth it.

The stage has three screens, one on either side, above, and one in the back. There are large speakers that are suspended on either side of the stage, as well. For some unknown reason, the screens on the sides were not used; images/video were shown only on the middle (back) screen. The giant speaker hung smack in the middle of our line of view of this screen.

We were definitely not the only patrons who moved seats at intermission. Fortunately we were able to do this, but it was a pain, and annoying to essentially 'miss' the first half of the performance. And to know that we paid extra for the bad view.

It was also cold/drafty in there. It's cold, almost December..I understand crowds create a lot of heat but it's not like there's a mosh pit at Mannheim Steamroller, nobody is dancing, the AC doesn't need to be on that high. I'm rarely a cold person, however I felt the need to keep my coat on the whole time, and still felt slightly chilly. My brother agreed it was a bit cold.

If you come, bring a coat..and don't sit on the sides in the balcony.

I was in San Jose for a recent conference and one of the events poured over and across the street to the Civic Center.  The event was a pow wow, and the space seemed adequate.  The pow wow was fairly small, but the coziness of the main floor of the center was the right size.

What's not to like about this space.  Between it's old Mission-style architecture (it's something to look at in the evening), and the set up inside, I think this is a nice venue for certain types of events.

Was there for the Roger Daltrey show on 10/21/11, I've never seen a cleaner venue and more anal retentive staff over cleaning up! Perhaps that is a good thing. Been going to shows since '78, but I have never seen a place clean as the show goes along.

They would bring out the mops as soon as some liquid hit the floor. They either have NO to very poor insurance or nothing better to do. The show was great, the sound was really good (then again we were on the floor in the second row of 106 on the inside aisle, very good seats for the night! Very loud, but it is a member of The Who, so what do you expect?!

Overall a really nice CLEAN venue. Enjoyable atmosphere and would love to see more shows there, it was my first visit.

We came down this weekend for the Mustard Pimp show.  Man, I was so excited.  I freaking LOVE the MP.  But as great as the music was, the show really sucked.  It wasn't MP's fault at all....it was the venue and in particular, the crowd.  Never again will I go to an "all ages" show.  I have never seen so many 11-year-olds dressed like hookers....and bombed out of their fucking minds.  If I had a nickel for every time someone's little angel asked me for drugs, I would be a rich woman.  I never thought I'd say this, but security needs to tighten their shit up and do a better job searching people for "prohibited substances."  They were friendly and courteous to us, but for once I think they needed to channel the usual "bad cop" thing.  It really made me sad to see all these future stars of "Teen Mom" running around high as fuck with their ass-cheeks hanging out.  Not to mention my husband and I felt like geriatric pedophiles in the midst of this Romper Room crowd.  As soon as MP wrapped up their set, we left.  And that's sad because they were only the third act....the show still had like 3 more hours left to go.

Aside from the kindergarteners ruining everything, the venue itself is pretty big and has plenty of room to move around; there's a cool balcony as well as floor seating and the sound was really good.  The staff was doing an exceptional job keeping the bathrooms clean as well.  So that is why I'm giving 2 stars instead of one.

This place is hugeeee. I dropped by here during the Jazz festival. It was one of the first stop we went to before we trailed the streets of downtown SJ. I have to say that we sat pretty far back on the balcony because it was so crowded but nevertheless...it was a fun experience

I first came here for the Greek Folk Dance Festival and I was kind of sad looking at the state of the building. It looks run-down, old, and dirty. Just to go up to the balcony, you have to pass multiple sites of renovation up 2 flights of stairs that aren't lit due to the broken bulbs. I can see this being a great place to hold a concert but since I spent 3 days watching the festival events, it just seemed more and more sad as the days go by. I live in San Jose and I think I can safely say that I prefer to to event at the HP pavillion or the event center at SJSU.

Saw Crosby Stills and Nash here.

    Some Info from their website:
Built in 1934, the San Jose Civic is a Spanish mission-style, dual-level venue that hosts a variety of events including concerts, performing arts, general assembly and special events.  It has about 3000 seats in it's current form. (I think that is dropping down to around 2400 when the new seating gets installed.)

The Civic has hosted such legends as the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Jefferson Airplane, Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisand, The Grateful Dead, The Beach Boys, The Who,  Duke Ellington, Harry James,  Beck, Interpol, Switchfoot, Reliant K, My Chemical Romance, the Pixies and even Snoop Dog.

This is a beautiful venue, and I am so glad they are restoring it.  Much is finished, but there is still more to come.  I look forward to seeing this grand building fully restored to it's former glory.

Ok, so I saw 4 jokers and a Queen last night at the San Jose Civic Auditorium.  The sound system was muffled at times, so some things that were said I didn't understand.

Another thing is the security will not let me bring in a sealed unopen plastic bottle of water!  I asked why to the security personnel, and she said it was requested by the people who run this venue.  I thought this wasn't a good excuse, so I asked to speak to the manager.

When the manager came, I told her there that I tried to look up information on the website for this venue and no where it states what I can or can't bring in.  I asked her why can't we bring in a sealed unopen plastic bottle of water, and she said it was standard procedure in all shows she's been at that this was the case.  She said they aren't pushing me to purchase it at the concession because they have a water fountain.  It was just also the request of the acts inside.  (What kind of excuse was this I thought?!?!)

Eventually, they made me drink the water outside and throw it away.  I found out that the concession stand inside sold the same type of plastic bottled water.  They must think that people are that savvy enough to sneak in liquor (ex. vodka or gin) and still keep the bottle sealed??  Not sure, but maybe the acts or promoter (<a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fnederlanderconcerts.com&s=b59ff65fb2f478c83e5ad2c2f91cee5249dcce641027f471d22bf667d1c7f34c" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://nederlanderconcer…</a>) should at least give me a better explanation.

I came here to see DREAM THEATER on August 27th and was not too impressed with the CIvic Auditorium layout only.  Though it  is much bigger it really did look like a High School audirorium with the way the orange chairs were set up on the ground level, and the orange chairs on the balcony level.  I was on the upper balcony and near a concessions stand so that was cool- nice access to drinks and snacks.  My seats were actually good, though I would have preferred to be on the bottom so I could be closer to DREAM THEATER, but hey at least no one was blocking my view.  Though it took more than 2 hours to see Dream Theater as there were 2 opening acts, it was well worth the wait!!!!!!! Dream Theater rocked San Jose this nite playing songs from their newest album "Black Clouds and Silver Linings" as well as their hits over 10 years.  The sound quality and the lights were impressive and  the lights too impressive that I could not get that great quality pictures as much as I tried.  Great job to those who put on the show~!  I will definitely go back here to see any of my favorite bands- whetther they upgrade this auditorium or not.

I came here to see one of my all-time favorite bands Relient K and to my luck I got the front right against the separator fence and as a pretty small person, I didn't even get squashed or smooshed which was incredible. Sound quality is good good. There are plenty of seats for the people who don't enjoy standing and actually enjoying a concert.

You imagine the place to be big, decked out in beautiful plush red velvet seats, with amazing stage lighting ready for any mini-broadway show to come into town. Hmmm..at least that's what I thought when I heard of shows premiering at the San Jose Civic Auditorium. What a let down..the total opposite of everything I had expected and anticipated.

A fellow yelper described it perfectly, "It's a high-school auditorium meets wannabe theatre." That simple, short and sweet statement depicts the Auditorium exactly! The exterior is of like an old run down library. The ticketbooth is a joke, it's basically a closet with windows. The inside of the auditorium needs a major face lift. The interior is old, and the paint looks like it was done by a few starving college kids eager to make a buck.

We recently visited the San Jose Civic Auditorium for the first time when Playhouse Disney Live on tour rolled into town. I purchased the floor seats thinking we were going to have great seats. Goodness.. another major disappointment. The seats on the floor were actually the fold down chairs like the ones you see at people's garage parties. As the usher helped us to our seat she turned to me and said, "Oh just to let you know, be careful when letting your daughter sit on the chair. If you don't distribute her weight properly then there's a chance that the chair will collapse and she will fall." ... WTF?! ARE YOU SERIOUS?

So the floor "VIP" seats sucked. We honestly would've been better off on the sidelines or even in the balcony. Thank god we had an aisle seat otherwise my daughter probably wouldn't have been able to watch the entire show because she'd have a hard time looking over people's heads.

The bathrooms are small, again in need of major renovations and there are only 4 in the entire place : 2 downstairs, 2 upstairs with about 3 stalls for each bathroom. The wait outside the ladies room looked like the lines you would see shopping on black Friday.

If you're visiting the auditorium for some kind of event, save yourself the money and don't sit on the floor. Seriously consider opting for sideline seats or balcony seats.

Truthfully, I really don't like this place.

The floor seats are folding chairs and your rubbing hips with the person next to you (its literally a tight sqeeze).

And it really does look like an old high school auditorium.

Been here once to see Interpol. It had potential to be an interesting venue, but I think other reviewers are right - it needs a makeover. It's like going back in time, but not in a good way. Tired, 60s-era decor for the most part when it comes to the details. And yes, it seems like a sports arena hastily converted for music events.

It's high-school auditorium meets wanna-be theatre.  I noted elegant light fixtures and a reasonably upscale lobby with a few cash bars (extra stars for that!).  The snack bar had Gordon Biersch and tri-color nachos.  The bathroom was clean, but you cannot have only 3 stalls at a public venue, people...  when will you learn?

It was weird to see the Derby Girls bout here, after getting all rowdy at the Dry Ice arena in Oakland.  There, you could sit right next to the track in hopes of catching one of the girls if she careened out of control.  Here, we were all clapping politely in our tidy little seats.  (Well, sort of.)

Nonetheless, it was pretty easy to find, easy to find public parking nearby, and close to other fun venues.

We're hosting our first event here this weekend. I'll let everyone know how it goes. But so far  the management has been more than accommodating. I'm really looking forward to it. This place is a dump!  It's a step backward in time.  It's a sad sad venue.  It's a good example of architecture and design that should never come back.  I've been here twice before, for the shark city nationals martial arts tournaments (see:).

It's just dated and it's truly showing it's age with circa 1960's orange plastic chairs, split-pea soup green carpets and nasty bathrooms.

This place needs a exteme makeover! It's a sad representative of San Jose, where I would assume everything should be more high tech and modern.

    Pix laters...

Seen some decent acts here, Beck, Snoop Dog, Interpol, and some others, but the sound is really echoey. It's kind of well hidden for being downtown and the size is right for a decent show but it's darn old and the plastic seating and floor screams high school gym. If they keep putting up cheap shows however it still worth checking out for the random good gigs they'll get.

Was here for a dance event.
The place is supposedly historic but it looks and feels old.  There are only stairs to the balcony.  The seats are molded orange plastic seats in the balcony and it is a really steep stepped incline.  The acoustics were awful with our dance music.  Bathrooms were old, reminds you of a high school bathroom with the terracotta tiled floors, the metal stalls and the white sinks.  The stage is raised with an art deco design on the sides of the stage.  The place is huge, cavernous, over 8000 sq ft.
