You wouldn't think a joint like this would have excellent cocktails, but then you haven't tried their frozen pina coladas... they're actually made fresh, to order, with real ingredients. Sit at the outdoor bar and have the bartender whip you one up, then relax and enjoy the sun and ocean breeze. Summer in a (plastic) glass.
Review Source:Fun , casual place with lots to choose from on the menu, including great custom-made sushi.
Drinks are very good, and cheaper than at some other places.
Seating can be in, out, or in between.
Our server was excellent, both at the table for lunch, and later at the bar for drinks. Â There is a TV if you want to keep an eye on the Red Sox game!
My friends and I had a great time here on a Saturday night. We showed up pretty late for dinner and got our orders into the kitchen just before it closed thanks to our awesome waitress, April. She recommended the fish sandwich which I thought was pretty tasty. The outdoor seating area was pretty cool as well, and over all it was just a really fun place to go and get some dinner and drinks!
Review Source:So, this place is awesome. Not because of their fried fish sandwich (which is also damn good); not because of the outdoor bar and eating area (no one should ever eat inside during the summer in MV); no, Sand Bar & Grill is awesome because of April, mine and my friends' waitress last Saturday night. She did water shots with us because she couldn't drink on the job; she took our orders stat to ensure we got our grub before the kitchen closed (at 10pm); she put up with us when we were three-shots deep (read: the loudest people there). She was generally the best person ever. I'd happily go back and eat more sweet potato fries on their glorified picnic benches, but I'd DEFINITELY go back if I knew April was working.
Review Source:With only spending 2 nights on MV, I wish we had picked a better dinner spot.
This is definitely a local spot, where families and locals come to just hang out. To tourists as myself, this was quite off putting. 2 tables nearby had their kids running around, in and out of the restaurant and through the bar. The parents weren't paying the slightest bit of attention (which bothers me to no end). The table next to us had their child laying on the bench, crawling all over the parents, with chicken-wing sauce all over his face. Gross.
I got the fish tacos and my boyfriend got the pulled pork sandwich. He thought his sandwich was very good - tangy and smokey. My fish tacos were sub par. Very under seasoned. I NEVER put salt on ANYTHING... and I must have sprinkled some salt on the fish 3-4 times. The portions were small and the prices were not (for what you get). Left there hungry looking for a late-night treat.
The people at the bar seemed to have been drinking since early afternoon, as they were quite rowdy. The sand outside was a unique aspect of the restaurant, however left me wondering if it is every cleaned (it didn't seem it).
If you're a local or love the over crowded bar scene, this is your spot.
I went here about 2 years ago and all I remember was that the bar was full, the drinks were flowing, and there wasn't a bad vibe for miles. Â Everyone seems to talk a lot about the food, but I just come for the drinks and good times. Â The bartenders were great, the people around my friend and I were all awesome. Â I think the only bad thing about this place was walking out of the bar with a boat shoe filled with sand. Â But that's if you only stay around too long.
Review Source:The sun was setting on the Atlantic like an orange-sickle over Martha's Vineyard and after a day of touring the island, we were starving. Walking back to the harbor to catch our cruise, we dropped by the Sand Bar and saw that they also serve sushi.
Hands down THE BEST sashimi and sushi ever. Everything tasted fresh. There was this one dish we ordered called the Volcano. I have no idea that it came out looking like a mound of ahi tuna almost poke style with seaweed salad underneath.
It was ... orgasmic. I would definitely come back to this place and definitely re-visit Martha's Vineyard for a romantic vacation.
TIP: If you need really yummy food, but in a hurry, order sushi at the bar. You won't regret it.
Chef Raymond Shilcher of OysteBar infamy is working his juju on a way
sophisticated beachbar menu; rocking the Baja fish tacos and his signiture Grilled Callimari, something unknown in New England, followed by a Maryland crab cake that defies it's genre. Raymond's long time
island cullinary connections net him local seafood that unloades at the dock infront of SandBar, & local fisherman walk in carrying Bass & Blues.
Do yourself, & get there for sunset, & stay for the food and the scene to follow, as there is always a Buzz to be found here...Jst sayn, xo, Gmoney
If they have the crabcake, get it. If they have the lobster roll, get it. Ditto on the sweet potato fries, ribs, burgers, and...well, you get the idea. If you happen to be there on a chilly, damp day, get soup, Whatever the variety happens to be. Layer upon layer of flavors swirled together in a melange of magnificence. You may never be able to stomach Campb*ll,s again.
Oh, the harbor view and sunsets are tremendous, too!
This place was ok, but the service was insanely slow. Â
We came because we were hungry, and we walked by and saw that it had the "best sushi on the island." Â The sushi was definitely ok, between a sashimi platter, some exotic maki rolls (Red Sox roll, which is more or less like a spider crab roll; a dragon roll; and a spicy tuna roll, all of which were great), and some fresh and delicious sushi. Â
The problem, however, is that it took them better than 45 minutes to deliver the sushi boat for two (20 pieces, dragon roll and spicy tuna). Â Everyone else with us had already finished their meals -- veggie burger, hot dog, sashimi platter -- and were champing at the bit for dessert before we even got the sushi boat. Â The sushi chef apologized profusely for the delay, but it's simply inexcusable to wait 45 minutes for 20 pieces of sushi.
This is my NEW favorite place for drinks in MV! I think during our 3 day getaway, we visited the sand-bar 3 times. The drinks were good and so were the fish tacos, but the best part was the view of the harbor and putting my toes in the sand. It was like being on the beach, sort of... views of the water and sand! I had a great time! Plus they have nice umbrellas to provide you with some shade.
Review Source:I quite enjoy the Sand Bar. I tend to start my night down on the water. It's great to be outside, getting sand (that is probably saturated with spilled drinks) in my sandals while sipping a drink and gazing at the yachts I wish I could borrow for the summer. Drinks are good, and so is the atmosphere, it can get crowded, but at least you aren't cramped indoors with a bunch of strangers sweating in the summer's heat.
Getting to the bar is sometimes a challenge, but if you go inside all the way to the back, there is another bar where you won't be fighting to get noticed.
Yea so I stumbled here after I left Nancy's on my b-day. Drinks were great! Didn't try the food since it was late and I had already ate at Nancy's,but the drinks were on point. The owner was really cool. The staff was awesome. Ladies, there is so much eye candy at this place. Wow! It is sooo much fun. You have to go here.
Review Source:So we didn't really come here because we wanted to. We'd been pretty much every where else and it was our last day in martha's vineyard. We decided we wanted frozen drinks and to just sit by the water so this is where we came.
The drinks were fine - but how hard is it to screw up a frozen drink.
We ordered nachos with chicken which were not bad aside from the guacamole that may have been bad on top. It was dark green (which is fine since it oxidizes quick) but it had this nasty tingle it left on your tongue which is just nasty and tasted old. and the sour cream looked like it was squirted on through a mayonnaise  container.
our waitress was average. She sat down at a table with someone at one point and all of the waitresses were just leaning on tables and the hostess stand and whatever.
overall, eh, I wouldn't recommend it
Coolest place on the island.  Like heaven on earth and it's dog friendly outside.  WOW!  Check it out for yourself.  <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D1oCVAUrd7UU&s=91613e2249a52e67f0920666e3a90243ea6152322762514b5ce07c4dbdd60653" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.youtube.com/w…</a>
Review Source:This place was great. I am disabled and in a motorized scooter and my husband and daughter couldn't get me up into the sand bar to eat outdoors. I wanted to so badly. So the waiter came down and helped carry me and my scooter onto the sandbar so we could eat . Also all I wanted was seafood and none of the side dishes. They were very accommodating and didn't charge an arm and a leg for doing so!!
Review Source:Have a summer drink and listen to some local musicians do their thing (usually very loud), but don't eat here. Their food is just mediocre at best. This place enjoys a harbor front  location overlooking the boats and a walkway where people stroll by. They have sand on the ground and those tall electric heaters for cold nights. This used to be a space entirely devoted to t-shirts and slowly the restaurant business took over. They were one of the first places to offer sushi in the summer which at the time was seen as quite innovative and daring. It competes for tourism dollars with assorted other food establishments with similar menus, service and prices. Just have a goombay smash or a Cape Codder, watch the crowd go by and soak up some sun. But stay away from anything to eat. There are much better places to eat nearby.
Review Source:This place is all about atmosphere. Â Went to this place on a Sunday evening, they had a band playing that played some mellow classic rock type music, along with some of their originals....pretty good, especially when the young girl sang, Charlotte, she was awesome. Â It's right on the harbor and the tables are all in sand, so it has a very beachy type vibe. Â So basically what I'm saying is that you should go this bar for the atmosphere, not for the food, because it's overpriced and not that good. Â Tried some of their sushi, the Incredible Roll, and it just wasn't that good. Â Trust me, I'm a bit of sushi snob and this place was just eh, not worth it.
Review Source:Was thinking about ordering sushi here until I saw the prices. Â Ridiculous. Â So I decided to go with their swordfish. Â The food was definitely good but the portions were very small. Â My wife ordered a burger and my sister-in-law ordered some chicken salad (they forgot to throw in the chicken at first).
We went on a Saturday afternoon (maybe around 4pm) and they were all out of several kinds of beer! Â Thought that was strange, especially with it being Saturday.
The service was ok. Â It took awhile for the food to come out but I guess it was pretty busy there.
I spent a ton of time at this bar last summer (2008).  It has a really cool wrap-around, horseshoe'ish shaped bar on a wooden deck in the center of a sandy area with tables and chairs.  It's right on the harbor and the sunsets are amazing.  They serve all kinds of yummy food including some slammin' sushi, but I go for the drinks as always  =)  On your way to the bathrooms inside which are roomy, fairly clean and usually available, there's another bar on the other side of the building which I frequent often as well.  I would highly recommend checking this place out.  Thanks for reading and have a nice day.
Review Source:We visited Sand Bar and Grill for dinner after a long day of sight seeing at Martha's Vineyard. We came in and were seated promptly at harbor side on the patio. The waiter was very polite and answered our questions promptly. No problems there.
As for the food....We ordered the strawberry daquiri and did that pack a PUNCH...we were tipsy after a short while, it was worth it! Â There were four of us for dinner and we ordered an assortment of items. We ordered a lobster, a salad with pistachio nuts and mixed greens (forgot the name), miso soup, seaweed salad and sushi. Â The lobster was good and cooked well, but don't feel shy to ask for extra napkins and extra plates. The waiter was nice and accommodating, but forgot the extra little things that make it a "clean" lobster dinner. The salad was sooooo good!!!! Fresh ingredients and super yummy dressing. The miso soup and the seaweed salad were good. The soup was served hot with lots of tofu and seaweed. The Seaweed Salad was served with wakame on top of cucumber slices. Which did seem a little strange, since we weren't sure if they were just trying to save on the wakame or being inventive. Either way it worked well and was good. We also had california rolls, avocado rolls and cucumber rolls. All food was decent, I can't say this was the "best" sushi experience in my life, but it was good for a quick fix.
Overall, the food was good, the service was accommodating, and the location was nice, but it wouldn't go out of my way to return here with so many other options to explore.
The sushi at this place is the best on the island. Â It is very fresh and they offer some interesting maki creations. Â The sushi chef Andy is kind and helpful. Â He is also very funny and has spent several evenings galavanting around the bar with me causing mischief. Â Andy loves good times and good drink. Â The big boss man is Lil' Pete he is a a great bar manager and an excellent chef. Â The music is usually very good and includes mostly reggae. Â I believe I am the only person to ever get in a fight here and it was broken up very quickly after the Emo queer with bangs punched me in the mouth and didn't even split my lip. Â I quickly returned a blow and then he ran away. Â Hilariously my hundred pound female friend caught him and threw several punches and kicks. Â it was the funniest fight I have ever seen and knew that I had to go for the night, when Pete asked. Â I'll be back youse haven't seen the last of me. Â The seafood is so good, The high end drinks are strong and very, very cheap, at five dollars and famous people have been spotted there by me enjoying this island destination
Review Source:Right on the harbor, on Martha's Vineyard you will find the island's only beach bar and festive music is playing.
This restaurant serves fresh fish, lobster rolls, delicious fish & chips ( the way they should be made ), burgers, steaks, seafood pasta dishes and fresh inventive salads or you can grab a hot dog, but if you do I'll never forgive you for missing out on some tasty food.
Their sushi bar offerings are fresh, tasty and eye appealing. The chowders, fish or New England clam ( very good ), the lobster bisque has chunks of lobster meat all through it and they serve Miso soup and gazpacho.
Good food, good service, great views and a festive place to sit back or to get down.
