My husband and I recently visited the Erie area and we had several http://Restaurant.com certificates to use. We decided to try Sluggers... you can't go wrong with a sports bar, right? Wrong! We went on a Monday night and our section consisted of 3 parties of diners (including us). The waitress was slow, unapologetic and probably visited the other 2 tables about 5 times more than she visited ours. My drink was empty for quite some time... that's just poor service. They were out of wings and we agreed to the boneless substitute... not good. My husband didn't even eat half of his. Our visit from start to finish was one of the slowest dining experiences that we've ever endured... it's a sports bar, not fine dining! We didn't bother to complain as the waitress didn't seem the type to care and her approximate 3 visits to our table (including taking the order and bringing the food) were so rushed. We felt like we were putting her out and that the other diners were obviously more important. At any rate, this was one of the WORST dining experiences that we've ever had and we are NOT picky eaters. Save yourself some money and time... pick another place to eat!
Review Source:Had an absolutely terrible experience at Sluggers last night. As this is my first time in Erie (in from Philly area for a wedding), some friends decided to meet up at Sluggers to have some drinks and a "quick" dinner.
Before we got there, our friend asked for a bar menu to see what was available because the restaurant menu only listed a few generic options. She was told that there were no bar specials, and got no menu. Then we got there about 8:15 and ordered food from our waitress (who told us up front that she was new, which is fine but she was so inexperienced that she really should have had another waitress with her to help. She had NO clue what she was doing. It was a sports BAR and she didn't know what most of the beers were- and I don't mean that she didn't have the tap menu memorized, that would have been fine... more like whenever someone ordered a beer that wasn't like a Bud or Coors, she looked super confused and had to have them repeat it several times and then brought out the wrong beer a few times). We ordered the food at 8:30.
She came back about 25 minutes later to tell my friend that they were out of the pulled pork for the sandwich he ordered and to pick something else. Not sure what was going on in that 25 minutes, but were were one of THREE tables seated in their dining area, so it is not like she was busy with other tables. She also mentioned that she put in our food order 2 minutes ago... what she was doing the rest of the time, we will never know. My friend chose a wrap because it already had been a while since we ordered food and he figured it would be fast.
An hour later, about 1.5 hours (!!!!!!) after we ordered our food which consisted of fries, wings, 2 wraps and a sandwich, our food finally came out- one order was wrong, one app was missing entirely, and the wings were dried out with the sauce puddled at the bottom- indicating that while we waited a long time for our food, the wings might have actually be done LONG before they came out.
I asked to speak to the manager and she was totally unconcerned and not very apologetic. She told me she would look into it, and eventually came to the table and just said that the waitress was new and it was "a lot of food". It was simple bar food, and it really was not a lot. Anyway, she offered us some coupons but since a) we are from out of town and will likely never be back to Erie and b) if we ever do come back to Erie for any reason Sluggers is the last place I would want to go... the coupons were pretty worthless. She must have been able to tell I was upset because she then offered to take a few items off of our bill. Each couple (there were 3 couples) had 2 drinks taken off their bill... which was a nice gesture, but too little, too late. I would NOT recommend Sluggers! We could not wait to get out of there.
Terrible service, long wait, subpar food= not worth it.
Stopped by Sluggers last night (Monday) for a couple drinks to end the evening. Â Hadn't been to this location for about 5 years, back when it housed a club called Pecadillo's. Â Like many places in downtown Erie this place has changed since I lived in the city. Â
Huge space with a variety of seating arrangements. Â Lots of TVs. Â Lots of pool tables.
The large central bar was slammed with only 2 bartenders working it. Â I was almost offended when my cherry vodka and Diet Coke drink was handed to me over the bar in a smallish flimsy plastic cup--especially when my Designated Driver's water arrived in a tall glass--but then realized I was charged less than $2 for my drink. Â Not sure if there was a mixed drink special going on or not, but, either way, wow. Â I love you, Erie! Â Â
Would be interested in seeing what Sluggers is like on game days and weekend nights, but for now I can't really justify giving it more than an "A-OK" 3 stars.
When it comes to wings and bar food in downtown Erie, there are plenty of options available - State Street is lined with restaurants, pubs, and dive bars, almost all of which offer regular food and drink specials. Â With a thriving college bar scene and weekly summer block parties, there is a lot of fun to be had here. Â However, I would recommend going somewhere other than Sluggers...
I have been to Sluggers for food and drinks twice. Â My most recent experience was absolutely awful. Â When I first walked in, there were a handful of people sitting around the large square bar in the middle. Â I took a seat at the bar between two groups that were already seated. Â The bartender walked right past me several times and even left the bar for a few minutes before acknowledging me! Â He was pleasant and charismatic when we actually started talking, so I gave him the benefit of the doubt and looked over the menu.
I ordered a tall draft beer and some Texas Twisters (deep fried jalapenos and onions). Â I also decided to take advantage of the $0.35 wing special, ordering 10 cajun-ranch dry rub wings. Â I took a sip of my beer, and was caught off guard at the taste - it tasted like I was licking the floor of my kitchen after the Christmas Ale keg party back in '05! Â I tried to convince myself that I was in a foreign country drinking some local microbrew that was supposed to taste like moldy perfume, but I couldn't keep the charade up very long - two sips later, I had to send the beer back and get a bottle.
When my food came out, I was really looking forward to the Texas Twisters - I have only found appetizers like that in a few places over the years. Â I was disappointed to find that they were very bland. Â The wings were crispy and covered with a thick coating of the cajun ranch seasoning. Â After one bite, I was reminded why I didn't like the dry rub wings the first time I ordered them there - they were simply too salty to eat. Â As hungry as I was, I struggled through a few wings, eventually deciding that I needed something to protect my tongue from the excess salt. Â I looked to my ranch dressing... "Ranch is the new ketchup!" Â I thought, "Everything tastes better with ranch!" Â I dunked a wing in the cup, only to find the sauce was the consistency of dishwater in a pan used to make fettuccine alfredo.
Defeated, I ate the celery and carrots that came with the wings and made my way toward the door.
This place was just all right, I thought. Â An okay sports bar with a college crowd. Â Really enjoyed the cheap beer here. Â Would I come out of my way to go here? Â Probably not. Â The bartender service was okay. Â Did like the fact that they had more than just two pool tables with crowds of people waiting for each, haha. Â I can't remember how many there were, but it was more than average which was nice. Â Check it out if you're in Erie.
So AVERAGE.
I love, love, love this bar!!! I was born and raised in PA for 15 years and then moved. I always come back to visit friends and family and this past Christmas I was FINALLY legal to drink and my best friend, who now lives in Erie, took me here.
AMAZING. They have 2 dance floors, which ultimately means 2 bars. They have about 6 pool tables, a separate restaurant/grill area, and other miscellaneous seating. They play all kinds of music, mainly music that will definitely make you feel some energy, but at certain hours, they let you control it by using the jukebox. Of course, they have sports games on TV, but you can also dance, drink, and play pool all at the same time. The second dance floor is in a whole separated level from the main bar, and is only open certain nights. So all in all, it's a sports bar, bar, grill, and club all in one. Â
Their service is fantastic. And by that, I mean the BEST. Erie is a big city, but small to those who have been in bigger, so the atmosphere is VERY down to earth and friendly. They treat you with your hometown hospitality, but have enough city in them to maintain their edge. It's perfectly balanced and sometimes, NOT JUST IF YOU'RE A GIRL, they will buy everyone in the house a round. And it's not strictly the cheap stuff. Steve was awesome. I recommend him. I haven't seen a sports bar this nice even in WA state. It was by far the best. I will definitely be back when I come back to PA, trust me.
