The service here is SLOW. He food, while very good, is nowhere near good enough to justify not even receiving an appetizer for more than forty minutes after ordering in a nearly empty restaurant. It looked like the waitress was working the restaurant by herself and was just overworked. They really need to add more help, because there were multiple screw ups on both our order and bill. Despite my sympathy for the lone waitress, I will not be coming back due to the lengthy and disorganized service. No one was rude, but it was still probably the worst service I've ever experienced due to the lack of other servers (and/or lack of cooks). If you do decide to risk this place, get he fried zucchini. You might not see it for a long time, but it is good.
Review Source:Smee's is one of those places that you can always count on for a good meal at a good price. Â It's a neighborhood gem that promotes: 'Friends don't let friends eat at chains.' Â I appreciate this, because we try to spend our dollars at local establishments.
Smee's has a tavern vibe, it's pretty dark inside. Â The booths are comfortable and there are a few TVs near the bar. Â A few times there has been live music or a DJ spinning so smooth jazz.
Hand's down they have the best rib eye steak sandwich in town. Â And carrot curls (deep friend carrot shavings). Â And they have started carrying some local brews, too.
The one downer about Smee's is that sometimes the service can be a bit slow, but I found that  to be more the case at lunch than at dinner.
So if you're looking for a good meal, somewhere simple, Smee's is definitely a good stop!
Can't decide where to go? Just want some good tavern grub and a beer? Smee's is a default place to go.
Took my parents there last night. Place is cheery, fun and had good AC. Even better they have SunKing and Smithwick's on tap. All of the food had nice presentation. I had the panko grouper fingers which is listed as app but is really a meal includes fries and a really delish cole slaw. I could have had a lot more of that slaw. The grouper was moist, tender and fresh tasting.
My wife's sandwich came on an excellent sourdough roll.
Everyone's  fries were perfect. The tenderloin sandwich ordered met the Indiana certification of approval for Hoosier Tenderloins.
Service was prompt and had no problems when we changed our orders a couple times.
Smee's offers a good dinning experience.
My husband and I just had an awful dinner at Smee's. It started with flat coke, progressed to loaded fries that I'd bet $50 had been microwaved, went on to a Caesar salad that had the most watered down dressing I've ever tasted, and culminated in a bill for a full-priced craft beer despite it being a "$3 off craft beer Friday." When we asked the waitress about the beer she explained that we needed to be charged the full $6 for the Sun King (that incidentally is local and retails around $2.75) because it was a bigger can than the rest of the craft beers, and "Oops! I guess I should have mentioned that went you ordered it. Sorry!" The evening ended with me apologizing profusely to my husband for insisting we drive north to try this place. If you are reading this, trust me... I have no agenda other than to tell you that I am an avid supporter of local restaurants, but to advise you choose another spot.
Review Source:Nice place to eat outside when it is sunny and warm. Â We tried the spinach artichoke dip and couldn't get enough of it. Â I had the BBQ chicken salad and it was delicious if a bit ordinary. Â My boyfriend had the salmon and liked it. Â All in all a solid place to eat but not overly exciting.
Review Source:A good ole neighborhood restaurant. A place that if you went often enough I truly think "everyone would know your name." And ladies you MUST use the restroom there!! The beautiful glorious large photo of Brad Pitt from his Legend of the Falls days makes you want to stay seated longer than necessary!! I'm not kidding! Ok, the food.
Being a beach girl who grew up on the FL Gulf, I cringe when I see Grouper on a menu in the Midwest. It's a warm water fish so where it's coming from? Well, they offer Grouper as Starter, Sandwich and Main Dish. I cringed so much I almost convulsed. In my stupor I asked our server about how long do they keep the fish, how they store it, etc. To my surprise she gave me a detailed answer! The Grouper is flown in frozen every other day and they sell through it so much that have no need to store it. Meaning it's not kept in a bucket of water. Fear not, I asked. I still didn't have the guts to order it but I plan to be brave the next time I'm there. Then again, the fish is not coming from 'the docks' so I make no promises.
I had the pulled pork sandwich which was just average. Nothing Special. My friend had the pork tenderloin sandwich which was great! All white meat, delectable sauce but not overbearing and the bread perfectly toasted. I highly recommend it. Â
The place could use some updating with the decor, replace a few stained ceiling tiles and few other minor changes. It has the feel of a place old people would like but it's menu is not just for the old and bland. Just pick the right dish and cross your fingers on the Grouper.
I really wanted to like this place. It is right around the corner from our house, so my hubs and I were hoping that it could be our local hangout. No Bueno. The hostess was really nice. She smiled, was friendly, and showed us to our table. The crowd here ranged from older people to little kids. The TV's around us were all tuned to Fox News. That was strike one. You think they could turn it to something political neutral like CNN. Reading yelp, everyone seemed to think the steak sandwiches were great. So that is what my husband and I ordered. Ours were full of gristle, they were flavorless, as was the aus ju that was served with it. I just wasn't all that impressed.
Review Source:Half price glasses of wine! Whoo hoo! Â Oh, and they pour a good glass of wine, they aren't at all stingey with it.
I would more accurately rate Smee's a 3.5, but I rounded up because it was probably closer to the 4. Â I would rate the food more of a 4, and the service closer to a 3. Â
The server was very friendly and knowlegeable, but the kitchen was very slow. Â Yes, it was a busy Saturday evening, and we were not at all in a hurry so I wasn't bothered by it.
I ordered the steak sandwich in the original style as recommended by the server. It was very hot when it arrived which is always a plus in my book. Â I was slightly perplexed as to why they asked how I would like it cooked because I said medium rare and it was cooked well done. However, the steak is pretty thin, so it may be difficult to cook it less than well done. Â It still tasted just fine though, and was in fact quite delicious. Â I would suggest they just serve how they prepare it and don't bother asking the question. Â I had a side of garlic red potatoes which were also very good. Â My husband and our friend both had onion rings which looked REALLY good. They said they tasted really good. Sadly, I don't know exactly how really good they are as I did not get to try them. Â This also
leads me to believe they must be pretty darn good because my husband almost always asks me if I'd like a bite and he kept them all to himself.
Smee's seems like a really nice neighborhood bar/restaurant with a good menu and nice service. Â I'm sure we'll try it again.
I went here with my mom since we had both been by it a bunch of times and never checked it out. We had seen positive reviews so we were hopeful!
Overall, it was a decent experience. The place seems kinda old but that adds to the atmosphere. There seemed to be quite a few regulars there by the time we left. Our server was young but really nice and helpful! He recommended the steak sandwich and it was delicious! So were his other suggestion, the carrot curls or whatever they are called!
The downsides? The chips that come with the yummy spinach and artichoke dip tasted a bit like pickles...not sure why. Some people might like this, but I disliked them quite a bit. Also, my mom got a thai wrap and while it looked nice the chicken was super dry. She decided not to complain, however, since she had eaten quite a bit of it. Next time, she'll probably just get the steak sandwich!
Smee's tries to do a lot with an extensive menu and lots of drinks available. But it pulls it off well. The food we had, nachos and quesadillas were quite tasty and the service was great sitting at the bar with my colleague. I you watch carefully, the owner is a friendly guy cruising the room on most nights for a while. He knows a lot of his clients, which really says a lot about him and the place itself.
Review Source:Smee's Place is a great bar and restaurant hidden behind the chaos of 86th Street. It's great for a quick bite to eat, a long meal hanging out with friends, or a drink at the bar! The bartenders are great, they make excellent drinks and have a great alcohol selection.
The food is great -- standard bar/American restaurant fare. Good appetizers and salads. The portions are plentiful and the service is excellent -- food arrives quickly! The wait staff is friendly and always helpful.
They have great specials every day. I highly recommend Smee's Place as a place to relax and enjoy a drink & meal.
I may do an update eventually b/c my first few time at Smee's was REALLY good but last night was just OK. Â
I really love the Spinach Artichoke dip ...and they do not skimp on the chips like other places. It is great to share as a starter. Â I really love it!
I got the Caesar's salad with blackened salmon. Â It was not anything special and I was kind of disappointed in the dressing. Â I probably wouldn't recommend it.
My hubby got the jerk chicken sandwich (it's jerk seasoning, not sauce) with their spicy fries (ummm....YUM...the fries are fantastic to dip in ranch - I scavenged his last few!) and though I wouldn't recommend my meal, I WOULD recommend Smee's in general. Â It's a great little hole in the wall on the NW side of Indy at 86th and Ditch. Â Easy to find location but one that you may walk by 12 times and never see. Â I only know about it b/c A) I live super close and B) my friend is a bartender here. Â
Speaking of drinks, the bartenders are GREAT. They make some kick ass mean drinks. :) And, the bar area of the restaurant is fantastic. Â It is also non-smoking, which is REALLY nice.
The servers are great, attentive, polite and fast. Â All things I appreciate in servers/bartenders. :) I don't like waiting for drinks or appetizers and they are great about getting these things out quickly.
I will definitely continue to go to Smee's Place. It is a chill, relaxing, comfortable environment - good for catching a game (but don't expect BIG screens). Â It is WONDERFUL and next time, I'll get my regular breaded tenderloin with those fabulous fries (yes, unhealthy, I know!! Â but...soooo good) instead of the Caesar. :)
Okay, I love this place!
It's just a bar and grill type place, but it's a very neighborhood type of place. My friend and I both got the spinach melt, and yum! It was really good.
Our waitress was super friendly, and everyone was really happy with their food and the service.
It's totally the type of place you could drive by and walk by a million times and never notice, but you should. It's a really great restaurant for a casual meal. Loved Smees!
