Weather you are ordering for your next party or stopping by to eat in the pavilion this place will fulfil your BBQ needs. I have been a patron of this establishment for many years and they never disappoint. I personally love the pulled pork sandwich and always top it off with the banana pudding.
Review Source:I grew up in North Carolina, and for those of you who don't know we Tarheels take tremendous pride in our BBQ. Â Growing up I participated in more then one whole hog pig picking right in my family's own back yard. Â So believe me when I say I am no easy critic when it comes to BBQ pork.
I'm here to tell you then that Smokehouse is one of the top 5 places I have ever bought BBQ pig from in my life. Â Folks it is just that good. Â These people know how to do pig right. Â Let me tell you what's so great about this place. Â First the pork is extra lean. Â I positively hate pork fat in my Que, and this pork had almost none at all. Â Out of a plate full of goodness I was only able to find one tiny piece of fat. Â That is a real win for me. Â Second this place is dirt cheap. Â Good BBQ doesn't have to be inexpensive but it sure does help. Â I got 3 meals to go with two sides each for less then $25. Â That is a total bargain given how much food you get. Â Third the Brunswick stew is just awesome. Â This stuff is made from scratch and you can tell. Â I should know too since I make a d@mn good Brunswick stew my own self on occasion. Â Folks this stuff is the real deal and compliments the BBQ superbly. Â Fourth, the sauce is really excellent. Â Ok, it's not the vinegar and red pepper that I grew up with and truly love like no other but it is easily some of the best Kansas style sauce I've ever had, and it's got bite too. Â A little goes a long way. Â Fifth, there was lots of good bark in my meat. Â No I'm not saying they put dog in it, I'm saying I got a lot of those edge pieces where all the dry rub spices have charred in to the meat and the flavor is concentrated like extract of bbq pork. Â It's like nectar of the pork gods y'all. Â Whoever chops this stuff knows how to mix, and cull it right. Â And finally it is locally owned and run, out of an old house, and it is cooked over real hickory. Â You can smell the wood smoke as you get out of the car and it smells heavenly to somebody craving good BBQ.
In short, this place was a real find, a truly hidden gem. Â I'm probably crazy for writing them such a good review in fact because they are so good I almost want to keep their awesomeness to myself. Â But since I'm only in the Gainesville area about every two months maybe it's best that I share since it will insure that they are still there when I want to come back for some more fantastic BBQ and Brunswick stew. Â This place definitely makes the short list of places I want to go whenever I visit North Georgia. Â In fact I can hardly wait for my next plate of Smokehouse goodness.
Some of the best hog I've ever had. Â The pulled pork is lean...no chunks of fat. Â The brunswick is meaty with a spicy kick. Â I've been eating here all of my life and never been disappointed. Â And I didn't realize they had such great prices until I started eating bbq in other towns.
Skip the chain restaurants in the area...eat here instead.
What a gem. Â Open 3 days a week. Â Time Warp back to 1977 era restaurant and prices that are very low. Â Two cuties at the window were sweet as molasses. Â Pork was 5 star. Â Ribs were 5 star. Â Slaw 2 star, Brunswick 2 star, Sauce was 3 star, Atmosphere was 5 star- Old, dirty, and quaint. Â Eat under the screened porch on the vintage varnished picnic tables... Â Portions were huge. Prices were tiny. They aim to please. Â Smiles were abundant.
Review Source:This is the real deal. Â A run down shack surrounded by strip malls and chain places. Â Going here is like going back in time. Â The Q is delicious, the sauce is an interesting peppery, kind of almost worcestershire-ish mix. Â The brunswick stew is solid, and the nanner puddin' is pretty good (could be a bit more nanner, a bit less puddin')
Given that I ate my fill (with refills on sweet tea) for $8, I can't really complain. Â It's not the best Q I've ever eaten, but it's a strong contender. Â Solid food, down home production, and cheap as hell. Â
Five stars.
I have eat his more than should be allowed!
-They have great catering
-prices are around$7 per person
-Meat has a great smoked flavor with no fat
-sauce (I could drink) has bite wit kind of an A1 flavor to it
-Staff is always friendly
-the food prep area is very clean
-they have a screened in porch as a dining area most locals get it to go though
Consistently great BBQ - the best anywhere - been in business for over twenty years at same location, always crowded at lunch with locals. Lean pulled pork and ribs. The best sauce ever; not too sweet nor is it a tomato base. People love the banana pudding deserts. Great for bringing in out of town guests to eat in old style authentic (clean) BBQ shack in what is now a thriving commercial district in Oakwood. Open Thursday, Friday, Saturday only. Great take out options for a party, etc.
Review Source:Yeah it looks like you're going to someone's grandmother's place to eat what you've ordered and yeah they're only open on the weekends but it's all part of the charm that makes this some of the best BBQ around. Â They've been doing it for over 30 years so they must be doing something right...right? Â They cater too so if you want your guests to oooh and ahhhh while you take most of the credit, call them. Â Man this is some good barbeque!
