Excellent food and drink selection. Â I ordered Sole Provencale and my wife the Pancetta Mac and Cheese. Â Each dish looked like something on the food network and was delicious. Â The best part was the price was on par with a Fridays or the like. Â So excellent foody food at decent prices. Â Great beer selection and a full bar. I hope the location isn't too far from downtown, because this place deserves to thrive. Â Love the prohibition theme :)
Review Source:Great atmosphere and the food was amazing. I don't know how you come up with the idea to recreate a speakeasy atmosphere and ad a menu that is so edgy and modern. It is kind of crazy, but it really works. As a vegetarian I was overwhelmed with the number of choices I had and my entree was delicious. The meat eaters in the group seemed equally happy with their food. Loved the secret room behind the curtain (you can book it with reservations for small groups), very Al Capone!
Review Source:The food here was awesome, unfortunately the service was pretty terrible. We visited on a Saturday evening around 8pm, shortly after a private party had for the most part cleared the place out.
The atmosphere has been changed since it's renovation from The Cambridge house, walls have been repainted and modern lighting fixtures installed. They had a live jazz ensemble that was great. The music was well mixed and not too terribly loud, enough to hold audible conversation at the table.
I highly recommend the Mussels app and the Goat Cheese and Spinach Artichoke Dip. My date let me try her Asparagus soup and it too was fantastic.
We ordered the Beef Medallions cooked medium for dinner. Two of the three medallions arrived very well done.
This is partially why I was frustrated with the service, or lack there of, from Mattison. He never checked in to see how we were doing until the meal was over. Most the meal our drinks remained empty for up to ten minutes at a time. I am very forgiving and tolerant of servers when they are slammed busy, this was not the case with Mattison. Many times he could be seen dancing around and by his tables as if trying to impress, looking to catch glimpses of his own reflection in the windows around. I know I can't speak for everyone, but I find that behavior to be extremely vane and annoying. I just wanted a drink refill or to be asked how I was doing.
I was slightly disappointed our table was never visited or checked in on by a manager at any point in the evening.
Overall, I would recommend this place to friends as the experience for the most part was enjoyable. Good food and ambiance can only get you so far, management will need to be more involved in the service of their guest if they want to ensure a successful business.
Their take on the Grandwich was awesome. Â The beer prices are what I would call average for microbrews, however to appeal to those of us whom may not be very high on the SES ladder, they have 2 or 3 dollar Old Styles, which is fine by me. Â I had a bloody mary yesterday and thought it to be one of the better ones I've had in GR. Â It comes with a beer chaser which is always a plus in my book. Â
The owner is approachable and welcoming. Â I can definitely see myself coming back again in the future. Â My wife had the turkey pesto sandwich on sour dough, and found it to be really great (I can attest to that because I had a couple bites myself). Â I haven't tried their entrees but I can imagine they would be quality as well. Â
The restaurant itself was clean, as were the bathrooms. Â I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to anyone. Â The only thing I wish they had was a Guinness tap, but now I'm just being picky.
Went for the first time last night before a Grand Rapids Griffins Hockey game. We had a group of season ticket fans that are always looking for great places to eat before the game. I had the Double Grilled Cheese and it was great. My wife had the Risotto Cakes. She said they were very good. There were 9 of us and everyone complimented the cooking and menu. We are looking to come back again soon.
Review Source:The SpeakEZ is a great addition to Grand Rapids! Â They've got a fun, unique menu, with a great drink selection. Â The atmosphere is really fun, and they host great events. Â The staff is well-trained and so helpful. Â They accommodate dietary needs, including vegan and gluten free. Â The goat cheese spinach artichoke dip is to die for!! Â Definitely worth checking out!
Review Source:Great Food and Awesome Beer Selection - I cant say enough good things about this place. Â It also hosts A Moth on the 1st Tuesday of Every month. Â It is setting the standard for entertainment with live music on Wednesdays and occasionally on Saturday nights. Â I also like the fact that they never charge cover for live music. Â
Definitely worth checking out!
The food is amazing!!! Â It's a newer place, so it's still evolving, but they are really doing a tremendous job with their menu. Â The pulled pork sliders are to die for, and the beef tenderloin is amazing and you get a huge portion at a reasonable price. Â There are a lot of good sandwiches to choose from and some tasty apps too. Â Great drinks and reasonable prices. Â The helpful staff is well informed on the food, the wine, the beer, and the custom mixed drinks.
This place is flying under the radar right now, it shouldn't be, it's one of the better bars in GR with some great food and a good location. Â This place is a must and after a few visits it is going to be a staple for my visits downtown. Â The SpeakEZ Lounge is one of Grand Rapid's best kept secrets.
SpeakEZ's location has been inhabited by several bars in the recent past. Â Previous bars have closed because they fail to attract a large crowd on a regular basis. Â SpeakEZ seems to be falling at the originality as well as the food. Â I'd first like to say that, for a bar that brands itself a "Speak Easy", the atmosphere leaves me very confused.
I've been to their restaurant three times. Â The first was with a large group of people within a week of opening. Â Out of the 10 people in my party, only two were satisfied with their food. Â One example was the gravy covered sandwich that came out luke-warm and soggy. Â No one was satisfied with the price of the drinks, which seem exorbitantly high for a bar trying to attract new customers.
The other two times we visited SpeakEZ, we only went for drinks and were once again disappointed with the drink prices and the taste of their house brandy.
I recently drove by their establishment and saw a sign that said "$1 off Michigan beers" to attract the GR Art Festival crowd. Â Guys, if you want to draw a new crowd, you have to take a loss on occasion. Â A deal to draw in new customers would have been "$1 Michigan beers" or at least "$1 Domestics".

Very good drink selection. They opened up the floor plan a little bit compared to the Cambridge house, which was very nice. So if you looking for a drink, not a bad place to go.
On the other hand the food is not very good. I had the French Onion soup and the Pear Salad. The Salad was good, dressing was nice and light. Pears and Lettuce were fresh. The soup on the other hand was horrible. Cheese was burnt on top, so I had that taste in my mouth the whole time. And the soup it self was very bland.
My wife had the Risotto, very bland, not much flavor. Also it was very soupy, just wasn't very good.
Just disappointing.
I stopped in for a beer...
Great beer and wine prices and a solid selection. There were a few signature cocktails that are spin offs of classics such as the Negroni, but not as many as I would have thought a speak 'EZ' would have, I think there were only three. I guess if you are looking for the real classics then Viceroy is still the place.
I didn't order food as the kitchen was closed, but the menu looked a bit passe to me. It seemed pretty basic and unimaginative, but I hear it tastes good.
Our server was prompt and knowledgeable.
The interior is very similar to the Cambridge House, in fact I'm pretty sure that Speak EZ has recycled the furniture from CH. There is some new paint and some strange VIP type sections that have been constructed.
My concern for Speak EZ is that  they are not doing a whole lot different than CH did. I'm  not sure how sustainable their venue will be, but I wish them the best of luck!
This place is worth checking out.
Great new addition to Grand Rapids! Â This was formerly "The Cambridge House", but completely remodeled with new ownership, new menu, new vibe... NEW BAR! Â My wife and I enjoyed our first visit. Â Try the "RedRum" drink... which is awesome, and also try the "Suffering Bastard". Â I have a feeling this unique new bar will become a favorite for many in the GR area.
