This used to be the hot spot for me about a year ago. I'm talking every Thursday night for months AYHOOOH!!...anyway the layout is great...always something new around the corner. The outdoor patio is a very nice touch....also never had a problem with the bartenders...always wore low cut tops and got my alcohol to me quick...prolly just because they wanted my scockscage AYHOOOH!!! Imma believe that anyway...The price was great too! $1 cover and $3 pitchers...can't beat it...anyway the downfalls were the lines and the incredibly high amounts of swinging dicks spilling their beer and slapping their chests around this mug...totally redic...overall a pretty good place to bring the kiddos.
Review Source:I use to go to star bar all the time, it was my choice of bar compare to any of the other ones (granted not much else to choose from). For a small nothin to do town, it was alright.
It typically plays decent music and has a good size floor. Never had problem with leaving a tab, but again that was a year ago, not sure about now. Most of the time, there were no cover (other than thursday night $1 cover), but it was way better than going to Dixie next door.
This place is full of young people. 18-20. Everyone underage is drinking or asking you to buy drinks. Very annoying. The dance floor is tiny. The music is always good. This place is always so crowded so I always end up outside on the balcony. There is also always a long wait at the bar to get drinks. I hear of a lot of people saying not to start tabs. I was waiting to get a drink and the bartender had someone's card and forgot what they ordered so just charged them for something. Really ridiculous! I would recommend only bringing cash to this bar.
Review Source:Used to go here twice a week but I feel like I am a little old to come here now. On Thurs nights its super crowded and you have to wait forever to get a drink unless you know a bartender. Its usually a bunch of little kids that can't control themselves after a few drinks. Its really nice to go after work and have a beer on the balcony outside and watch the sun go down. The owner is extremely nice and is a local guy so I support the place and do suggest trying it out! Just be warned Thur nights usually are not enjoyable unless you enjoy getting shit faced with all the surrounding area trash that comes in town.
Review Source:I don't think Star Bar is as bad as some people make it out to be. Most weekday nights are fairly chill. Thursday night is College Night, so it gets extremely packed and the line to get in can become very long.
I'd recommend getting a drink from the side bar instead of the front. I've never had a problem opening a tab, but I have some friends who've experienced some issues with that.
The music is typically Top 40. At times, when it gets late they will play some Dubstep, which is cool. Occasionally they will have some guest DJ's.
There is usually no cover charge (except Thursday Night's it's $1). I'd recommend coming to Star Bar or Tequila Rok over any of the other venues on Crockett Street.
As other yelpers have stated BRING CASH!!! DO NOT i repeat DO NOT open a tab!!
I rarely come to Star Bar but when i do its OK...
@ZACH C. "I do like the skanky young girls running around'!! LMAO great comment
As for the girls that do.... no i wont buy any shots from you even if you do try to flirt with me!!
As far as service with the bartenders they are pretty much on point with making drinks and serving you... as they should...
Outside patio has a great view of Crockett St. plus you can watch the wanna be Pimps and Ho's for a good ol chuckle
Follow the stairs to a bar upstairs:
I followed the advice of my predecessors and paid cash; I also didn't order drinks from the main bar but from the secondary bar near the dance floor. The bartender was a little slow but the waitress were more than willing to make sure your drink was full.
The location is down town and close to Lamar University so the crowd was young and looking for fun. The dance floor was bare until late in the evening but that's typical for any dance floor. music was a good mix of rock, country, and a bit of the new Pop hits. An open wrap around porch makes smoking a cigar and conversation a welcome change. Watch out for thunderstorms from the Gulf.
Pool tables in the back, Golden Tee machine, and the big screen TV's will keep the party going for the guys. Not to mention the super cute staff and the local color will put a smile on any face. Â Overall a good place, stick to cash and I think you will come out having had a good time.
Went here last night to kick off the holidays and was sorely disappointed. Here is what happened:
My friend started a tab and had a couple of beers. She went back and tried to close it, but talking to the bartenders was like pulling teeth! Apparently, they had her card but no tab so couldn't close out the tab and wouldn't give her the card! One bartender gave the card to another bartender and then ignored her requests to close her tab twice. This entire process took about an hour and was incredibly frustrating! They wouldn't let her cash out, because they were confused?! After speaking to the manager, we finally got some form of help- he found the card and asked her what she had- however, we found it incredibly RUDE that he didn't say "sorry" or do anything cool like reduce the tab because of all the trouble and time out of our evening the situation had caused. A simple "sorry we screwed up" would have been adequate.
Here are a couple of tips, Star Bar:
First of all, waiting 45 minutes to an hour for a drink is never okay! Even if you have a "captive group" of people who have paid cover to see a band, it pisses your patrons off to waste a majority of the evening waiting around for a drink. It doesn't make us want to come back! For the love of God, hire additional bartenders during times you are busy like holidays/weekends. There is like 11% unemployment right now- it won't be THAT HARD to find a qualified person who needs the work. Obviously having more bartenders when you are busy will also increase your volume of sales, so its kind of a no brainer!
Your manager (or possibly owner's?) performance last night was terrible! GET A DIFFERENT ONE! He stands behind the bar "helping out" the strained bartenders by standing there with a blank expression and doing jack shit. When your patrons ask for help he points at the bartender who is obviously too busy and continues to stand there. When we had a problem he wasn't apologetic or kind at all. This person shouldn't be in a position of helping customers since he appears to hate them.
As for me, I will not go to this bar EVER AGAIN! Even if Jesus Christ is handing out free miracles at Star Bar, I will not be in attendance- it was that bad...
