Loved it. I'm almost sad that I don't love closer to Beaumont. My group of friends needed a last hurrah on our way home from Lake Charles and we found exactly that in Starvin Marvin's. We had two cars of people using smart phones to find a good place. Only requirement was a patio and beer. This spot was exactly that. Biggest patio I've ever seen, along with some pretty large and cheap beers. That was enough to make me happy already, but when the food came out I was truly in heaven. Crawfish Mac N Cheese? Yes! Fried pickled okra? Yes! Only reason Starvin Marvin's didn't get 5 stars was none of the waitresses were particularly nice and my food came out cold. I can still look passed that for a giant patio and several different styles of Mac :-)
Review Source:Don't know how they stay in business. Â Visited the restaurant twice- the first visit is memorable due to the server's snotty attitude, the incorrect order that arrived at the table and the length of time it took to get our check. Â The second visit (and last, until the owner starts training people properly) could only have been worse if we'd gotten food poisoning. Â That couldn't have happened, though, as we were IGNORED the whole twenty minutes we sat there. Â No "hi, I'll be right with you", no drinks- the server for the table next to us, however, did notice we were there, as evidenced by the eye contact she made with me as she put the other table's empty, dirty dishes on our table while she laughed and chatted with the people she was waiting on. Â Worse yet, it was crawfish night. Â It's bad enough being ignored by a server - having the server who is ignoring you dump a tray full of decapitated crawfish carcasses on your table and leave them there is even worse. Â Walked out right after that. Â We will not return. Â Marvin needs to run his business a little tighter. Â I have to give the one star because it won't save unless I do- this place does not deserve even a pity star.
Review Source:Love the food.  Every time we've been our waiter/waitress was awesome.  I've reserved the private room for two separate events in the last 6 months.  To do this you must give them your credit card info, type of event, number of people etc.  For the first event we arrived to find that they could not find our reservation at all and that they had reserved a different event for the private room, they were very apologetic, stating that this was not the first time this had happened and went out of their way to accommodate  us.  The second time I made a reservation I made sure to get the name of the person taking it.  When our party showed up for a relatively raunchy bachelorette party we were told that the private room had once again been reserved for someone else.  We were seated outside on the patio in 50 degree weather. We were told they were once again very sorry, the girl taking the reservation was new....blah blah blah.  They kept saying that they would be lighting the fireplace and turning the heaters on shortly.  Never happened.  Great atmosphere, great food, and an wonderful band, but 2 strikes was enough for me.
Review Source:We stopped here on the way back to Houston from Lake Charles this past weekend. Â The billboard caught my attention! Â I love this sayin, "starvin like Marvin!" and have been known to say it once or twice :P Â
We were very happy that we stopped. Â Our Bartender ROCKED! Â Cheers to you, Josh! Â Â We asked him to recommend a couple of desserts because we had just eaten but wanted to have coffee and something sweet. Â Make a note, the TURTLE CHEESECAKE was ahhmazing! Â My boyfriend had the pecan pie (im not a fan of pies). Â The coffee was good and bottomless. The conversation was great!
Looking around, Marvin's is fabulously laid-out. Â There was a huge outside patio (A/C in one part and a stage on both ends of the patio. Â I can imagine it being host to many long and fun-filled gatherings with friends! Â
Josh ended up selling us on some appetizers. Â We tried the sampler trio (boudin balls, crab balls and fried pickles--we're health nuts - NOT) Â The food was not bad. Â The boudin balls were my favorite of the three.
I would like to come back and try more of their food out. Â I read through all of the reviews before writing my own. Â I can only comment on my experience; if it had not been for Josh (our bartender) this place would probably get a 3 rather than 4 from me.
Service is important, we'll see yall again soon!
We saw this restaurant's billboard multiple times on the way to Lake Charles from Houston and on the way back we decided to stop in and challenge their "best food in Texas" claim! We got the fried okra as an app, the boys got massive 32 oz domestic drafts for just 3 dollars! And for food we got a turkey burger with Mac and cheese, the shrimp platter, and bison burger with steak fries. Everything was fantastic!!! The food was hot, fresh, and so tasty. Our server was good as well...no complaints about this place. Oh and we also really loved the atmosphere of the place...the patio was very nice! We will definitely stop here from now on on our way to the casino.
Review Source:We went to Marvin's mid afternoon on a Saturday. Most of the food was good and the portions were very generous. The fried pickles here are excellent. They weren't the over-battered pub food I've learned to deal with from other bars. We also had the crawfish bread which was very buttery but good.
My regret was getting the maple and chipotle roasted quail. It was much sweeter than I wanted. The red beans and rice I ordered with the quail were great.
The real winner at our table was the crawfish my husband ordered. He asked for 3 pounds and probably actually received 4. We all helped him dig in to his small mountain of spicy little critters. If I went back, it would probably be for a pound of crawfish and some red beans and rice. Delicious!
As past reviewers have said, when there is a live band you cannot hear yourself think. We were lucky to have been there early so the band was only doing a sound check and quit after a few minutes. Had we come at a time with the band actually performing, and only outside seating available, we would have left.
I work near Starvin Marvins and decided to go by and try having lunch there today. I ordered the Texas Club and it was one of the worst sandwiches I've had in a long time. The bread was not even toasted, the meat tasted like it was lunch meat, and it left an overall bad taste in my mouth. I wish the Hoffbrau was still there...
Review Source:First impression:  two members of staff arguing at  the hostess station... apparently if  he would just show her some respect everything would be better....  then we led to our table glancing down I noticed a pill of some sort broken on the floor and brought it to the hostess's attention... the pill stayed right were it was until we politely mentioned that a child may very well find that and put it in their mouths then it was cleaned up.  The food: one Clam Po'boy and one Shrimp Po'boy arrived on large platters presentation scored 100  There was so much seafood piled on top of the authentic french bread that you could not close the po'boy.  The only thing that I would have changed: Shred your lettuce and put mayonnaise on the bread before serving.  Then the taste!!! I couldn't wait to bite into that good looking shrimp!  and Boom....  the taste of the shrimp was that of Bleached seafood... I was very disappointed.  I ended up eating the eight steak fries that  were served with the sandwich. Last impression:  Two employees outside the front door smoking and arguing still.......
Review Source:I came here with my family to eat the blackberry baby back ribs. There was a line at the door (along with their empty beer bottles on the floor) and empty/clean tables inside, no idea why we had to wait to be seated. The ribs were great but there was a lot of shiz to put up with to get at those ribs. The band was loud, old, and horrible... the customers too. We decided to order beers and got no glasses. I think that might be all I have to say about this place.
Review Source:I went here after my friends engagement party, I had heard this was an awesome new bar. The bar was new, but not so awesome. I think maybe I've been spoiled by fancy dive bars in Austin that have gourmet food trailers in back because this bar was a complete nightmare for me.
The bad Led Zeppelin cover band that was performing made me want to leave immediately. The bar doesn't look cool at all, it honestly looks very corporate. These guys should start a chain of restaurants and just serve frozen food like Chili's because they have a very Chili's like vibe going on.
So I go to the bar to order a pint of beer and I was pleasantly surprised that they had the Saint Arnold Summer Pilsner on tap. I informed the bartender that I wanted a Pint of that she asked me if I wanted a Big Mug or what I had to point at the pint glass and say I'll take a pint of summer pilsner please before she seemed to comprehend what I wanted. I saw some poor silly bastard drinking out of the pitcher sized beer glass they tried to push on me and honestly the glass made them look like a clown. Sometimes you need to show some class and bigger isn't always better. I don't want to walk around and drink my beer out of a pitcher.
I wish I could say that this is a cool place to go, we all know Beaumont needs more cool places to go that done suck, unfortunately this isn't it.
Oh by the way, the Led Zeppelin cover band really was as bad as you can possibly imagine.
We visited Starvin Marvin's late one Saturday night for dinner because they serve their full menu until 2 am and we were grabbing a super late dinner (we arrived around midnight). Â There was a live band playing when we got there but we opted to sit in the restaurant area where it was quieter (the only time you can really hear the band is if the doors to the bar area opened up).
I ordered the fried crawfish tails and my date ordered the prime rib. Â I forgot what size he actually ordered but the size he got was wayyyy bigger. Â He was so excited! Â I tried a little piece and it was tender and delicious. My crawfish tails (my first time eating crawfish actually) were amazing. The garlic mashed potatoes were awesome too. Â The service was friendly and fast, and we had an awesome experience. Â Definitely putting this on the roster for many more late-night meals.
Great atmosphere, great food. Minor inconsistencies in management and waitstaff, but with every visit the issues seem to be more and more resolved. Something for everyone. Hopefully the kind of place that will turn into a true Beaumont staple. Only major criticism is the lack of beer selection. Although, they were offering Saint Arnolds Christmas Ale on draft for a while, which was a much needed departure from Bud, Miller and Coors.
Review Source:It's unfortunate that such a great space is unknown, and a little poorly managed.
While the food is good, the service can be slow, and you may run through 3-4 items to find something that is available.
It's inconsistent trying to find a quiet place to enjoy a meal.
On the upside, I haven't had a bad meal yet, and like I said, the space is just fantastic.
If Marvin got his act together, this would be one of my favorite haunts in Beaumont.
I had such high hopes when my friends told me about a new bar opening up in Beaumont. I continued to have high hopes when I stepped inside to see an amazing outside deck seating area, expansive indoor seating, bar, and even an upstairs area. I quickly visualized how much fun it would be grab an outside table, pitchers of beers with the fellas, and watch a UFC fight. Which is refreshing, seeing as you have to get to Buffalo Wild Wings 4 hours early to get a seat for most PPV events.
At any rate I hope that Starvin' Marvin's in it's infancy is going through poor cooks, and trying to sort out what they want on their menu. My friends steak had more fat on it that edible meat, my fish tacos were ok, but seriously get more hot sauce than tabasco. Since when is fried okra not fresh okra. This okra we had was pickled and nearly made both myself and my friend gag. Again, I hope they're just working out the kinks, I'm brave enough to give them a second chance on their food.
I'd still say an awesome place to watch a game or UFC hands down.
