Really odd restaurant, odd servers, bad smell. Came here because it was a business dinner and we heard it was a quiet calm place to talk, and it was. However, never had such a weird experience in all my lifetime.
The waitress reminded me of Flo from Mel's diner. Chewing gum and snapping it at the table. Had false eyelashes that were comical and kept making faces like a clown. Then the food came about 50 minutes later not a problem since we were there to talk but I was starving. The food was disgusting. Crab imperial sauce over a raw hide cooked chicken and cold beans. She forgot my salad, nice rolls which were very good. The 2 others At the table did not eat either. Steak that was overpriced and way overcooked looked like a sad piece of meat. Then ordered dessert and got moldy cheesecake. Big tray of dirty dishes 1 foot away from us.
Clearly trying to make this a nice restaurant with table cloths but its anything but that.

My uncle suggested Sunset Lounge for lunch and I'm glad he did! It's such a throw-back restaurant, but I love the un-renovated decor. And others must too, because the parking lot was full at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

We were sat in an empty room, eventually joined by another table. Our waitress couldn't have been friendlier! She was quick, but never rushed us out.

My mom and I both had the hot turkey sandwich with fries. A bit too much gravy on the fries, but everything was delicious! I liked my cucumber salad side and my mom loved her stewed tomatoes. Can't get sides like that many place anymore! My uncle's spaghetti was a huge serving, with gigantic meatballs. All three of us left with doggie bags.

I can't wait to return for dinner (I hear there's a relish tray!) and try their sour beef.

If you're looking for a modern (or even post 1980s place), Sunset won't be for you. But I love the look, the classic food and the friendly service.

I have been here twice and have enjoyed it both times.  Other yelpers have written about the place feeling like it is from a couple decades ago and a place your grandparents may have taken you.  I cannot agree more, however it is clean and neat, just not the most modern feeling.

Both times I have been alone in the area on business and have sat at the bar.  Service has been solid although some of the details are missed.  One odd thing I found is that a lot of the wait staff seems to sit at the high tops near the bar in between customers and banter back and forth between themselves.  I'm surprised management allows it.

The relish tray is a nice starter with 2 types of cheese spread, olives, pickled onions, celery, carrots and pepperocini.  There is a basket of individually packaged crackers.

The other night I got the prime rib and paid the extra $2 (for a total of $24) for the extra thick cut.  I ordered medium rare and received an end cut without asking.  The thing took up the entire plate and must have been 2.5-3" thick!  I also got mashed potatoes and gravy and green beans.  It also came with 2 rolls.

The meat was perfectly done and juicy.  There wasn't a great deal of gristle as is common with prime rib.  The mashed potatoes and gravy and green beans were fresh and decent sides.

Now the odd part.  Everything come is separate bowls.  I had the plate with the prime rib, a bowl of potatoes, a bowl of gravy, a bowl of green beans, a plate of rolls, a dish of butter and a beer in front of me.  The bartender was slow to clear the relish tray, the plate that had the cheese and the basket of crackers so my meal was taking up a lot of real estate.  I was never offered a glass for my beer so, at least that was not taking up more room.

I found the food to be very good and plentiful and brough home several "to go" containers (similar to the separate bowls."

The food here is definitely not cutting edge but is solid comfort food.  There is also an attached package store to take some booze home with you.

Wow. This place is past it's prime- needs Gordon Ramsey to completely revamp it. The clams had lots of dirt in them- the bar-b-que is obviously bottled. Despite the menu saying they use frech veggies, the waiter confessed that ALL the vegetables are cooked from frozen!!!  what? not the quality I expect at these prices. Not the quality I expect in 2012- more like an average restaurant circa 1983.  On the other hand, the waiter was a nice guy!  That's the only reason they get a star at all- it's a pity star.

Someone recommended this place to my mom. After eating there, I can only assume this person has some kind of vendetta against her. The place could have been charming with all of its wood paneling, fireplace and traditional style. But it just came off as old-fashioned and stuck in a time warp. That feeling continued to the music, the waitstaff and, most unfortunate of all, the food.

The salads were big, but felt like something Denny's would have served in the 80s. I had baked stuffed jumbo shrimp. If it weren't for the tails on the shrimp, I would have sworn it was some kind of shrimp substitute. I'm reasonably sure that the gunk on top of it came from a can.

Mom and I ordered green beans. What came out was a bowl full of tasteless canned mush. My dad's peas were canned, too.  Mom's pork chop was dry and tasteless. Dad was the only one who actually ate his meal, but he's easy to please and it's hard to screw up fettucine alfredo.

The entire ordeal took forever, and all of that wood paneling seemed to amplify the loud talking of the boors seated next to us so conversation was impossible. The pricetag was outrageous considering the poor quality of the food. Perhaps they justify the prices because the portion sizes are so large. (My dad's meal could have served a family of 6 with some left over.) But, huge piles of poo are not worth any more than small ones.

Unless you're Gordon Ramsey, filming an episode of Kitchen Nightmares, avoid!

My father in law and I both ordered soup and never received it.  Waitress said she forgot because she was too busy "playing" with my 14 month old son.  I'll forgive her for it since her and the rest of the staff were super good with him.  I would give them another shot because the food was great.  They give you a plate of olives, pickles, cheese, celery, carrots and onions to start.  That's a pretty good way to win me over. My in laws got the sour beef and dumplings which was delicious and I got a bacon cheeseburger which was awesome.  I've eaten a lot of burgers and this might have to be my new go to for burgers.

I love sunset, but the decor is lacking and needs to be cleaned. Other than cleanliness, the food is amazing as usual and the Crab soup is to die for! Highly recommend Sunset to all, just wish the decor came into the 21st century.

After writing two poor reviews, I wanted to write a good one.  Here is my first good(great) review, and even IT has its' minuses.  I've been here roughly 20 times.

Sunset is a gem set in the middle of nowhere, Glen Burnie.  Not being from here, everyone I have spoken to says it's as much of an institution in a 50 mile radius as the NSA(hope they aren't watching).

Let me start off with the negatives, the sausage and green pepper sandwich is horrible.  NEVER get it.  Also never get the escargot(the original reason I went here), they serve it with what I will swear to my dying day as a beef sauce.  It's mortifying beyond words.  Also never get the french dip.  I know it's hard to screw up a french dip, but theirs just tastes a little funky.

Now the two dishes that I will ALWAYS come back for:

    1. The turkey club sandwich is tremendous.  Sure you can get a club anywhere in the western world, and sure they all taste roughly the same, but not here.  Their club actually has REAL turkey, not pre-packaged, pre-siced, compressed lunch meat.  It also has plenty(more than your average club, making it superior) of REAL, THICK, TASTY BACON.  It comes with chips and a pickle.  Don't fret that no fries are included, you won't need them unless you're less fortunate and haven't eaten in days, the sandwich is substantial.  I'm from the midwest where a club comes with turkey and ham, getting used to this east coast thing with just one meat hasn't been easy for me, but the way to set that shortcoming right it to get the Sunset turkey club, it's awesome!  Total damage is $7.00 if memory serves.

    2. The prime rib. There is a stunning lack of consistency when it comes to this fine pleasure of the flesh.  On average, it's an incredible steal for the price.  The chunk of meat they bring out to you is roughly the size of an aircraft carrier.  It's simply enormous!  After bread and salad you WILL be going home with leftovers(don't forget your au jus).  On a good night, and it has been awhile so I don't even know if the same gentleman cooks there, but there has been twice, when it was literally the best steak I have EVER eaten.  Let me preface that by saying I am a carnivore.  I eat steaks for breakfast and between steak snacks.  When I say EVER, that's something!  It was mouthwatering beyond words that I, being an average human, am able to muster.  I think the cooks name was Ron, or Roy, or Gary(see the theme here?  I think it has an R in it).  In complete honesty, I would expect to pay double to triple what they charge at a high end steakhouse for the two absolutely stunning experiences I have had with their prime rib.  I guess the consistency of the dish doesn't allow them to up the price point.  Total damage is $24 I believe.

If you're ever in the area, try it out, especially the two winners above!

I'm from Annapolis Md and I've been to the Sunset over a Dozen Times and have only gotten bad food twice.

I usually order the Lobster Tail stuffed with Crab Imperial, pricey but it's to die for.

I can't speak for the salads, rolls,or other items on the menu and as far as the urine smell I must have the worst sense of smell in the world because I've never sensed it.

Yes some of the waitstaff and bus people need customer service training but you're going to find that anywhere.

The Only Con (yes I will definitely agree on this one) is the bathrooms which are small, cramped, and definitely disgusting on certain days

This may not be helpful but we asked a server about the food once and she told us that you have to go there when a certain cook (an older lady) is working who has been there since the restaurant opened but otherwise I've never had a problem with the food.

Went here because it was recommended to me.  Never again will I listen to this friend.  Our meal took almost 45 minutes to come to us, my prime rib was supposed to be medium and came out hockey puck.  My dates chicken Parmesan tasted like burnt cheese and the chicken tough as leather.  Never once were we asked if anyting was well or could be made better.  Never, EVER going back to this dump.

The food at this place was great!  The cream of crab soup was probably the best soup I've ever had.  My steak was done just right.  The place smells like old people though..like maybe bingo night at the elks club.  Wasn't really digging that.  But the service and food were great.

    Exactly what Chris said!

I have been coming here for family occasions for years, but not frequently.

I went here on Saturday 4/30/11.  I was getting a strawberry shortcake to go and a bottle of wine.  I was leaning against a bar stool waiting for my order, which took forever.  While waiting I noticed there were a lot of elderly people around me but even if they were all wearing depends, there is NO reason for the ridiculious smell of sitting urine!  It was so pungent.  In all my visits to this establishment, I've never smelled something so bad.

As I mentioned earlier, I was standing, leaning against a bar stool.  As I was driving, I was curious why my arm was sticky, I thought maybe my daughter (9months) spit up on me or something while I was waiting.  NOT AT ALL!  When I got home I went to see what it was and the entire front of my shirt where I was touching the bar stool was covered with smelly black funk  and that was what was on my arm as well.  Im almost tempted to call the health department.

Onto the food, although the cleanliness of this place is being called into question, the strawberry shortcake, was to die for, as always.

The liquor store part of this restaurant is trashy.  The waitress stand out front smoking.  The man behind the counter was surly and rude.  The place was small and over priced.

    The Sun Has Definitely Set
This place was FILTHY.  The first thing that hit us when we went in was the overwhelming odor of urine--it smelled like a nursing home!  The floors were so dirty, french fries ground into the carpeting, trash, rolls under the table, crackers everywhere--it was just totally disgusting.  But we were trying to revive good memories of delicious cream of crab soup and mountainous crab cakes.  The cream of crab was still excellent, the crab cakes weren't bad, but several in our group had an upset stomach on the way home and the general lack of cleanliness is a good target to place the blame.   The sad thing was there was no excuse for the place to be so bad, it was practically empty on a slow Monday evening--plenty of waitstaff and bus people around--have some of them pick up..  Even the bathrooms were gross--especially the ones up front.

The owner/manager was there--he didn't seem concerned with the appearance of the place and there was a large much cleaner looking room sitting empty.

It's really sad this used to be a regional institution people would come from miles away to eat at the Sunset--we traveled from Ellicott City, it's a trip we won't be making again.

Some old restaurants you hate to see close, this one should shut down--and soon.

My mom and I meet at Sunset every so often and we enjoy ourselves. We typically get an appetizer and have several White Russian drinks! We LOVE the White Russians made with soft ice cream YUM!!! I like the food however the last appetizer I tried I wasn't too pleased with, stuffed mushrooms. The mushrooms were too undercooked for my taste and little crabmeat filler so I was disappointed. The service in the bar was really good but I've had waitress in the main dining area come across real snubby. Been there either too long or don't appear to enjoy their job.

    Decor:

Pros: semi classic decor with a lot of seating and mirrors ...

Cons: The restrooms are horrible, Is that a liqour store attached to the lobby? Giant eye sore of neon at the bar, yuck.

    Food:
The wait for food here is awful.  I waited nearly 20 minutes  for salads an additional 15 minutes for entrées which were served with rolls.  And this is at 430p when we started and didn't get out until 630ish.
The meal I ordered came with a salad . The salad had a giant tomato which was a little awkward to eat around, so far okay not overly thrilled. I ordered a rare steak. When it arrived it was over cooked to a medium rare and was 90% fat and impossible to cut through.  Maybe if it wasn't dried out, I could have tried to eat it? So after calling over the waitress she was willining to get me a new steak understanding the issue. The new steak was brought out from the kitchen raw and I was required to analyze the cut . At this point everyone with my party had ate halfway through the meal. So while I waited I ate through my cold and boring mashed potatoes. The steak arrived as my table finished their last bites. I like rare steak but to serve it tar tar?! That's fine your chef cannot cook a steak. I ate through the whole offering as my party seemed discussed  and made jokes the whole time.
I really wanted to get the hell out of this hell hole, but service here cannot bring a check for shit.

    Analysis :

Food here is awful I watched as my whole party seemed to fight to eat their meals. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

My family and I have been coming here for years and the quality of the food has never changed! Always consistently high quality meals at an affordable price. I recently went here with my boyfriend and requested a table by the fire which is exactly what we got. i generally order the sauerbratten (sour beef) when I come here because it is simply out of this world and truly authentic. However, their menu is not limited to German food, it has a little but if everything and I find that even in large parties anyone will be able to find something they would be delighted to order. For desert they make strawberry shortcake the old fashioned way and it is simply amazing! Though the portion is enough for several people to share so you might want to share with someone at your table or be prepared to take it home with you! The old school charm and atmosphere win me over every time I come here and my only wish is that I lived much closer to it. They are currently celebrating their 50 year anniversary as I saw on a sign when I walked in last week and I can only hope that I will be around to see them celebrate 100 in another 50 years! Yes, their food is that good!

I've been eating at The Sunset for 20+ years and can honestly say that I've never had a bad meal there.  The cream of crab soup is among the best I've ever tasted, and in fact probably is the best.  The prime rib has never failed to impress me.  The sour beef & dumplings (in my opinion one of their signature entrees) is out of this world.  The Veal a la Sunset (a variation of Veal Oscar) is consistently excellent.  All of the seafood dishes are very good.  I've never had a bad meal at The Sunset.

The service is always stellar.  As soon as you're seated they start bringing complimentary plates of cheese & crackers and "relish trays" (celery, carrots, pickled onions, olives, pepperoconi peppers) to snack on while you look at the menu.  The sourdough dinner rolls are always fresh and still hot when they hit the table.  Did I mention that the service is stellar?

I know it sounds like I work there or something, but I don't.  I'm just a regular patron (have been for many years) and I absolutely love the place.  I have many happy memories of family gatherings at The Sunset and I always recommend it to anyone who'll listen.  I live over a half hour away now (I lived closer in my younger years) and I still drive all the way down to Glen Burnie just to eat there.  I give it five stars.

Have been coming here for years.  The food is always good, the wait staff is always polite and I love the atmosphere.

The menu has a little of everything but when I come here I usually get the seafood, just outstanding.

But what makes this place really special is the oversized piece of strawberry shortcake.  It's the best thing you will ever eat.  The best part is that you don't have to eat in the restaurant you can go to the bar and get the strawberry shortcake to go.

Been to the Sunset many times and was just there last night. It is a real throw back to times 40 years ago. The decor, the menu, the good-old-girl with an attitude waitresses. The dining rooms are cozy and decorated with Tiffany style hanging lamps. There are white table clothes and napkins. They bring a relish dish and crackers. Good old stuff!  The drinks are good. You can really just relax and enjoy.

As for the food, I think it's very much a place where you have to get to know the menu, and what's good. They are famous for their cream of crab soup. My wife loves it. I don't. I don't think you should be able to stand a spoon in the middle of the cup and have it stand up...that's a bit thick for me. A matter of taste.

The crab cakes are pretty good, certainly above average. The soft shell crabs are excellent, about as good as I have ever had. Shrimp salad is super (1 sandwich will fill 2 lite eaters)!

This is generally a very enjoyable place to dine. You can dress up or go casual. Either way you will feel comfortable.

I'm not giving the Sunset five stars due to the service, but the food is good.  They have two of my most favs:  cream of crab soup and stuffed shrimp and i have not had better.  I've had better side dishes, Sunsets are just okay.  But....the cream of crab and stuffed shrimp are VERY good so I give them five stars.  so go and order both and just remember the waitresses aren't always friendly and you may have to wait for a table!

My husband and I had dinner here after he picked me up from BWI. It was a cold night and I was hungry after flying across the country. The cream of crab soup was perfect, filling and warm on a cold night. I followed that with a crab cake sandwich, which was okay. I have high standards though, having had the ultimate crab cake in Chincoteague a few years back. My husband had a juicy steak sandwich which he was very pleased with. At the recommendation of other yelpers, we took the strawberry shortcake to go. It is phenomenal. You can taste how fresh the whipped cream is.

The service is also great. Our waitress was very attentive and friendly. We'll be back to try dinner sometime.

Sunset has long been our restaurant of choice for special occasions.
Not that you have to have a special occasion to visit.

The menu is broad and has a little bit of everything - sandwiches to full seafood or steak meals.
A large portion is served for pretty much the entire menu.  At least all that we have tried.

They accept reservations and they are recommended at peak times and holidays (like Valentine's Day or the like).  But - you can get seated most times without a reservation.
Dress can be casual - we've gone in wearing shorts and sandals in the summer and haven't felt out of place.

I have found the older lady hostesses to sometimes be a bit snippy.  But generally the staff is nice.
We have also had one or two slightly mediocre service instances.  Not horrible.  It may have been the wait person was having a bad day.  But - it's not significant enough to override the fabulous food.

This place has THE BEST cream of crab soup.  They serve it with a tiny decanter of sherry.  If you go later in the evening the soup is thicker - almost like crab dip.  Thin it out a bit with the sherry.  It's just amazing and is our favorite!

We have had excellent steaks, crab cakes, crab melts, crab meat stuffing (see a theme here).

The meal starts with an appetizer of  Port Wine Cheese, Cream Cheese & Crackers and a relish tray.  These are listed as $5 ea. on the menu - but they've always been included free with your meal.
Soda - not refillable.  Iced tea, however, is.

Salads are good -the Roquefort dressing is phenomenal.  The chunks are huge.

Usually by the time we have shared the appetizer plates, had salad and a bowl of crab soup we are full.  So, a good bit of our meal goes home with us.  Not necessarily a bad thing.

Dessert - I think the only dessert we have tried (and, again - this usually goes home with us) - the strawberry shortcake.  Another thing this place is known for.
Delicious and very large.  Definitely something to share.

Overall - this is one of our favorite restaurants.  I just wish we lived closer.  We don't get there as often as we used to.

Local joint that is a throw back to when the food was cheap and service was good.

I've had the ruben, open face prime rib, sour beef and dumplings, and the shrimp salad sandwich (to name just a few things).

I'm a HUGE ruben fan and can be extremely picky, this ruben has the most tender meat I think I've ever had- it's just like buh-tah! I could eat them every day (and then need a CABG).

The sour beef and dumplings are a find as well and the shrimp salad does not disappoint.

This review is a bit "thin" on details as I'm short on time, but wanted to get my vote in for my favs. Check back soon for an update and more detail!

    Chow!

Excellent dining expericence. The wait staff is very warm and friendly. The food is amazing. The cream of crab soup is awesome, add a little bit of sherry and you're in heaven. The crab cakes are delicious and well seasoned.  The portion sizes is very generous,  I typically take half the meal home to eat at another time. Excellent value for your money.

I can't believe no one has rated this spot yet!

This is a somewhat upscale restaurant nestled in Glen Burnie near Bill Bateman's. The food here is really good, although a bit over priced for the portion size (it seems thats normal for restaurants in this price range).

The cream of crab soup is to die for.

    Good wine selection.

I don't go here often (pricey) and I don't live close, but I enjoy my meal every time. Don't think you have to be all dressed up to eat here. There are people who come in with jacket's and stuff, and its also a popular spot for kids heading out to prom, but you'll fit in just fine in jeans and a t-shirt.

Don't forget to try the cream of crab soup if you patronize this establishment.
