The food is excellent here! Don't be afraid to order the fish just because its a food stand at a beach and you think its gonna be greasy, old and gross. Its actually really fresh and tasty. The fish taco and fish sandwich are amazing! homemade gourmet tartar sauce. And the salads are surprisingly big and chock full of an assortment of things!

Our club took a ride up the coast a few weeks ago, and decided to have lunch in Stinson Beach.  This being THE place on the water, we decided to check it out.

First impression - definitely...er...rustic.  Second impression - WTF?  Cash only/  Uh oh.....luckily, between all the members, we were able to cover those who weren't ready for this shocker.

I went with a cheeseburger and fries....big mistake.  Absolutely the most boring burger on the most boring bun you can imagine.   In fact, I ate half, and decided I was done....the wife was ready to call an ambulance at that point, as she'd never see such a thing before.

Those that ordered the calamari found that it came from a box from their grocers freezer.  BUT....those who had fish and chips LOVED their food....as did the one dude who ordered fish tacos.

So have to be fair and say the place is "ok".  NOT a destination ride, for sure...but if you're at Stinson Beach, and starving, by all means, go....assuming you have the cash, of course.

This place was a life saver! It was a pretty chilly day at the beach and my friend and I had just hiked 6 miles or so from muir woods to stinson beach. We were so happy to find the Surfer's Grill and even happier to talk to the really sweet woman who was working there. She showed us lots of places to visit in the area and gave us tootsie rolls. The hot tea selection was really good quality and she even gave us milk to go with it! We had fish tacos and the fish and chips. The fish was fresh and crispy. Yum! The only downside is that it is open and therefore just as cold and almost as sandy as outside. I don't think that would have bothered me on a warm day though.

Good but not great. We had fish and chips for lunch and paid about $13 for everything, not bad. The fish wasn't oily and had a nice crunch, the fries were standard.

I'm not a fan of CASH ONLY places because I rarely carry cash. I don't recall an ATM close by so be sure to have cash with you.

    Great view of the beach!

If you're more of a hiker than a surfer, try hiking down from the Pantoll Ranger station in Mount Tamelpais State Park. Take the Matt Davis Trail down, grab a tasty burger and fries and hang out on the beach, and then hike back up via the Dipsea and Steep Ravine trails. The hike's just over eight miles round trip, with Surfer's Grill at the halfway point.

The shack is open daily from 11am to 5pm, though only on weekends in the off season. Bring cash.

So so so delicious, but it is CASH ONLY.
Worth it, the burgers are great.

The proprietors (sisters) are wonderful -- friendly, accommodating and they REALLY want you to have a good snack or meal. The little shack right on the beach is adorable, with picnic benches and booths on the water and part of it is enclosed in a patio to protect you against the wind. The garden salad was huge, crunchy and fresh, with house-made vinaigrette. The burger hit the spot. Great place for a quick afternoon lunch on the beach. Note: it's cash only.

unbeatable fish and chips with a homemade tarter sauce that you can eat on its own as a slaw.  Super sweet and welcoming sisters who run it.  Don't think it's open when the weather is crappy though.

You can't beat the location of this joint. There aren't many options on the beach but this place is friendly, fast and offers free refills. I ordered the sampler box which fed three people. Definitely a good deal to keep the hunger away.

Ok, so you're at Stinson Beach, enjoying the beautiful day walking along the sand, watching your toddler get his only pair of clean pants you brought soaking wet playing along with the waves hitting the shore.

You get a little hungry, but up and down the beach, the only thing you see are homes. Then in the distance, you see what looks like a lifeguard tower so you walk towards it. As you get a little closer, you see a giant "FOOD" sign on the tower. Score!

That's how we found Surfer's Grill. It's one of those typical beach food places with fries, burgers, ice cream, sodas, etc. We headed over to grab something for my toddler who had a pretty bad case of car sickness on the way up to Stinson Beach from San Francisco and lost his lunch. Twice.

So, we get to the counter and the prices are a tad on the high side, but typical of what you'd expect from a beach stand like this. I was going to grab a couple of things and a soda, but then found out they only took cash. That's a bummer.

We grabbed a french fries and I wanted to get a sprite too, but only had about 35 cents left. The woman at the register was super gracious and nice and gave me a small soda anyways. I think having a cute kid helped!

There were a few others around at this time and we grabbed a bench seat by the window.. it was an enclosed outdoor seating area with a great view of the beach. There also seemed to be an inside seating or ordering area too.. we didn't venture in to check it out though.

Anyways, fries weren't anything to write home about, but did the trick and again, the service was really great. That's unusual for the beach type stands I've visited and is a big plus in my book!

This is an awesome hidden gem at Stinson Beach. Very unassuming from the outside marked by little other than a big sign that says "FOOD". But upon walking up the dune you find a protected beach grill.

Full disclosure, the food is basic - I had a hot dog and my boyfriend had chicken nuggets & fries. There are definitely better restaurants in Stinson (Sand Dollar, for one) but the location is perfect and lets you maximize beach time. No need to get dressed - you can walk right up from your towel in your bathing suit! No need for shoes...unless the sand was as hot as it was last Sunday.

Off the beaten path, yet smack on the beach, with great views! The food is basic (burgers, fish and chips...). Cool views, surfer vibes.

A nice way to spend a couple of hours on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

Location, location, location. This place is right on the beach. Nothing fancy here, simple food, burgers, fries, fish and chips, sandwiches, etc.  Watch for the specials like fish tacos or clam chowder. The day I was there they had fried fish tacos which were yummy. It's the setting here gang. There are other dining options in Stinson however this is the only place right on the beach. The building is partially covered to block the wind and you get a view of the ocean, of course.
