We had passed by this place a good amount of times and decided to take a shot at it. Â Ok so let me start of by saying if Swiss food is what you are looking for - Â do not come here.....I made a reservation at Open Table for my husband and family to go celebrate Father's day over an early dinner. Â My husband had studied their online menu and decided beforehand that he was going to order the Sauerbraten Short Ribs. We arrived at the place which has ample parking in the parking lot in the back. Â We walk in and I was about to walk out since the restaurant was practically empty with only one other family eating there and nobody acknowledged us for a good 4-5 minutes, so we were just standing there at the front with no hostess within sight to greet us a big no no in my book. Â Finally someone asks us if we were being helped and tells us to wait again to be seated. Â We finally then 3 minutes later get seated. Â
The place has a nice clean atmosphere with dark wooden tables and chairs. Â We were handed the menus which we scanned and noticed that this is not the menu we saw online....we thought that perhaps they had given us the lunch menu by mistake. Â However when my husband tried to order his dish the waitress stated that they did not have that available anymore and they didn't even have the Chicken Schnitzel available. Â We stated we saw the menu online her response was that they were in the process of updating the menu and also "It's frustrating I know"....not the waitress's fault but this was irritating. Me and my husband both settled for the Meatloaf instead and my daughter had the pizza off the kids menu. Â We also tried the tartufo for dessert. Â The food was very good - meatloaf was cooked perfectly and so were the mashed potatoes. Â The bread was oven fresh and the tartufo was pretty good as well. Â My daughter's pizza was on what I would say a burrito and it was good as well. Â
Now if this place would change their name from Swiss Tavern to something else and update their online menu they would have got at least  4 stars from me....but hey maybe that is why the words Tavern are lit up but not the Swiss part....talk about tacky. Â
If you want a good dinner though you won't be disappointed just don't expect Swiss food.
Wow, I did not realize how nice and cozy this place looks inside, a true neghbrohood bar and grill, totalyl off the beaten path on Merrick Road which is lined up with residential properties, and is rather busy as folks use it to get to/from Southern State Pkwy. Â We have passed the tavern so many times, but somehow, I thought that it was just another dive bar. Â Then, I wanted to try something different and since we were going to the movie at Malverne cinemas, we gave it a try. Â The main dining room was occupied by a private party, but we were seated in the spacious bar area by the window. Â We ordered Margarita salad with grilled shrimp and it was dressed in a very light dressing with a citrus flavor. Â We also had calamari with a nice dipping sauce and buffalo wings. Â For the main course, we split a steak sandwich and for the dessert, we got a cheesecake which was also very good. Â Overall, we spent $100 for 2 on a ton of food and 2 drinks, a beer and an apple martini, the beer came in a tall glass, there was a plenty of it for 2 people, and the martini was strong and flavorful. Â The vibe is casual, you feel like you have come to your friends house to hang out.
