Although I'm not in Evansville all that often, I've been to Taj Mahal plenty of times.
I love Indian food and have many restaurants where I live. So, with only one restaurant here in Evansville, I wasn't expecting anything extraordinary. Luckily, I've been pleasantly surprised by Taj Mahal and regularly dine there.
The first thing I'll mention is that the spice level is a bit higher than at other Indian restaurants I've been to. Keep this in mind while you are ordering or you may find your food a bit too spicy.
As with most Indian restaurants, there are tons of vegetarian options. Some of the ones that Taj Mahal does best include the Dal Makhani,
Punjabi Curry, Dal Tadka and Aloo Gobi. They also have a selection of chaat items in the appetizers, these are very good and are a great start to the meal.
We've done lunch buffet, dinner and carryout on various occasions. The food quality in all instances has been well above par across the menu. The buffet has a somewhat limited selection, caters to vegetarians and non-vegetarians and also keeps all the items pretty fresh. I'd say the quality of the buffet seemed to be similar to the dine-in experience for us.
The interior is really clean, bright and spacious with the ability to accommodate larger groups easily. There are high ceilings, plenty of windows and a luxurious (non-functional) bar. The service is polite and the wait times for food are very reasonable. Of particular note, they are incredibly accommodating for food modifications. As an example, my husband was craving aloo gobi without the gobi one night and the staff obliged without question.
The food here is solidly good and anytime we have a craving for Indian food, Taj Mahal always hits the spot.
My husband and I decided on Taj Mahal based on their advertising of a full bar since we wanted a few drinks with dinner. Â DENIED!! No bar! Â There is a bar!...a BIG and BEAUTIFUL bar; however, it's not stocked with anything but Budweiser and Miller Lite...WTF! Â False advertising should get you a 1 but the food was decent, although not the best I've ever had and our waiter, who was the only wait staff in a full restaurant, was running his butt off and didn't do too bad of a job.
My suggestion would be to stick with lunch buffet, which I'm sure is great. Â Fast food with an iced tea! Perfect!
My daughter loves Indian food, and we've been wanting to try out Taj Mahal for some time. Â Last night, we did, and it was awesome. Â She had the Chicken Tikka Masala and I had the Chicken with Peppers, and some Garlic Naan. Â Our service was wonderful, the food was very tasty, the restaurant was very nicely appointed, and our server was very nice. Â We will definitely be back.
Review Source:4 STARS FOR THE FOOD! Â The reviews about service gave us a heads up when we went there, so we weren't too surprised when the service was OK. Â We got our food in a fair amount of time though. Â The food was delicious! Â We got the chicken tikka masala and another dish, the portions are small, but surprisingly filing; probably because these dishes are heavy. Â Our server always seemed so rush whenever he came to check on our table; but he did fill our water a few times without asking so that was nice. Â Â
We would love to try the buffet next time for the variety of food. Â If you don't mind the inconsistent quality of service, this place has really delicious Indian food!
This was the worst experience I have had in a long time!!! A brown roach crawled out on the counter of the buffet food counter. As if that wasn't enough the manager argued that I did not see a roach and my 9 year old son had to be 10 so he was charged the adult price. Yes I know... I Should have just walked out! Beware!!! The Taj Mahal in Evansville IN has terrible service and you share your dining with roach infestation! Yuck!!!! Hopefully the Evansville Health Department will inspect ASAP like they assured me they would.
Review Source:I definitely recommend the lunch buffet! This is such a better deal than a small entree at dinner, especially if you don't already have a favorite Indian dish. Love the variety of hot entrees. Always wish I had room for a salad with cool cucumber sauce or lightly sweet & refreshing dessert.
Go for the naan and dipping sauces: mint, tamarind, and onion....sooo good! Also the mango yogurt drink (lassi).
Service has ranged from passable to friendly and attentive.
This Thanksgiving we decided to change it up. Instead of Pilgrim food we would eat Indian food. It was a very good decision.
The favorite at the table was the lamb kabob; spicy lamb sausage served fajita style on a hot cast iron platter with onions and peppers. The kabobs are great with the garlic naan (flatbread with garlic and butter).
We also had the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Lamb Masala; chicken or lamb in a rich and creamy sauce served with rice. We chose spice level 3 but I could  have gone spicier (6 is the hottest).
We all enjoyed our meals. My 80+ year old parents couldn't stop talking about it.
The atmosphere is nice and the staff was friendly. Go.
First off, they have a beautiful bar and dining area (which is worth at least 2 stars right there). Their food is very good. Which is what I would expect of an Indian place in Evansville because they are not a chain.
The best time to eat here is during lunch (when they have the buffet). Dine-in and takeout are a little expensive ($10-13). The buffet is around $8.
Their booze situation is not anything great. When I was looking, I don't think they serve the mega popular beers (like bud light) on tap, which is rare in Evansville. With that said, the "craft" beers on tap are made by the same company. However, they have a decent enough wine selection and a few Indian beers that could be rather enjoyable with dinner.
A funny situation...
When the waiter asked how spicy I wanted my lamb dish, (1-6) I said 4 (medium hot). He told me no. I was surprised and asked why. He said Americans can't handle medium hot and he kept suggesting that I have 1 or 2. I ordered 3 (I know...I am such a nonconformist). He was correct, if I had gotten 4 then the spicy would have overwhelmed the other flavors. I have never had a waiter tell me outright 'no' when I wanted to order something. This time the customer was not right and I am glad the waiter told me.
Overall, solid 4 rating. Excellent little place. here is their website.

When I moved to Evansville from the east coast, I was glad to see that the city had several Indian restaurants. Â Taj Mahal has since become my favorite for its excellent food, good service, and pleasing atmosphere. Â Â
Indian dishes tend to be very spicy, but Taj Mahal gives patrons the ability to select how hot their food will be on a scale one to six. Â From my experience, all of their food is good, but I tend to stick with the chicken dishes because they seem to retain the most flavor. Â In addition, I always make sure to place an order for garlic naan-- a tasty south Asian flat bread-- to round out the meal. Â Â Â Â
Taj Mahal has a full bar that includes several Indian beers. Â The crowds are generally modest and the service is prompt. Â The one time I had to wait to pay my bill, it was because the restaurant was getting ready to close and the waiter rewarded me with a $5 coupon for my next visit. Â Not many restaurants would do that. Â Â Â
If you are new to Indian food, the lunch buffet is a good way to sample the restaurant's offerings and figure out what tastes are most appealing to you. Â Taj Mahal is a good Indian restaurant and a great find for Evansville. Â I make sure to eat there at least once a month.
