Best Indian in Fort Wayne. I discovered this place a few years ago and have yet to have anything here that is less than fantastic. The food is consistently excellent, whether it's made to order or from the lunch buffet. The head waiter always remembers us and makes us feel welcome. Service is friendly and attentive without being distracting. The restaurant is always clean and inviting, the food fresh and quickly served, and most of all delicious. I have been to many Indian restaurants in bigger cities that have great ratings and none of them have ever been half as good as Taj Mahal. They're a great place to take a first timer who's never had Indian, and everyone I've taken there has fallen in love. Favorites are their naan, which is the best I've ever had, paneer masala, dal makhani, and the nay rahan shahi korma. One of my favorite restaurants in the country!
Review Source:Our go-to Indian place in the Fort. Â The luncheon buffet is a great way to sample many dishes. Â The food is fresh and attractive, and the salad bar with lettuce, fruits, desserts always looks fresh as well. The wait staff is attentive and polite. Â We love both the meat curries and vegetarian dishes, and the mulligatawny soup is satisfying.
Review Source:Recycling is good. Serving recycled food is not. This place serves food that is obviously been sitting in a freezer.
BTW I am Indian, who has been all over India and US (lived in 4 states so far). so take it from me, the food here is only okay (bottom 10%) . If there were more Indian restaurants I would not give this place a second glance.
To elaborate more on the food quality, all 'curries' taste the same since they all obviously have the same 'base' curry. The food is pretty bland and has a cafeteria feel to it. Last time, I found out that the chicken curry was a soup base with pieces of tandoori chicken thrown in. Yuck!!
The only decent thing was the Gulabjamuns. And oh yes, the Mango lassi stinks to high heaven (sour, not much Mango in it).
To top it all, the staff is 'selectively' courteous. I will leave it at that..
In short, unless you are dying of Indian food withdrawal symptoms, stay away from this place.
We stopped here on our way back home to Michigan last Sunday night. The place was clean and the staff seemed nice but not overly friendly. We ordered our favorite dish Chicken Tikki Masala (it's also not hard to screw up it seems). It tasted ok, but kind of bland not much flavor at all. We wouldn't go back there again if we were passing through because we like  flavor to our food, but I wouldn't say it was the worse we've had. The naan bread was good.
Review Source:Horrible! I had dinner at this restaurant with my husband. The freeby appetizer (cracker-like bread) tasted like soap. The water tasted like the sea. My tandoori chicken was Christmas red. It was re-heated on a "fajita-like" griddle, on a bed of raw onions. Fancy, huh? Not so much. You cannot reheat chicken that's not steeped in a sauce. Cooking 101. My husband's lamb was edible, but not delicious. I ordered a Diet Coke to wash down the chicken...Pretty gross.
Review Source:I've only been to Taj Mahal for dinner once, because I much prefer going for their amazing lunch buffet. Â It's huge and chock full of delicious Indian goodness. Â Naan, basmati rice, tikka masala, chicken tandoori, those little fried veggie balls (don't remember what they're called, but man I love them), great vegetarian options, and lots more ~ I can never get just one plate and always leave so stuffed that I can't eat a thing for the rest of the day!
Review Source:We stopped by Taj Mahal around 4PM on a Sunday afternoon and it was kind of busy. Location is perfect - right next to Fresh Market.
The atmosphere is very relaxed, although a bit outdated decor, however, I think this place is great for family gatherings. Service was very good. Prices - very reasonable (around $10 per dish). Menu may overwhelm you! :) so many choices.
Everything we tried was fantastic:
Lamb tikka masala - my favorite of all, the sauce is just unbelievable. We ordered it 'medium' and it was just right for me, however, may be next time I will try it 'hot'.
Chicken tandoori - very well made, served on a hot sizzling plate, with fresh white onion and green pepper and a sauce on the side (ours was mild, not spicy at all). Chicken was well made but it was too simple for my taste.
Mulligatawny soup - very nice texture, not spicy, fresh herbs and Indian spices complemented the soup very well.
Nay Ratana shahi korma - well balanced vegetarian dish, we had it mild, next time we will spice it up, it needed an extra kick.
Naan was made fresh to order.
Kingfisher beer was a great addition to our meal. I even tried a glass of Indian white wine and it was very nice!
I also liked the thin crispy bread they brought in the beginning with spicy chutney.
The portions were medium size, Tandoori was on the bigger side (5-6 large pieces of chicken).
Overall, it's a very good place, there is a small Indian grocery shop next door, they have a variety of spices and things one may need to make an Indian dish at home ;)
Also, this place offers buffet during the day (from 11am - 3PM), I want to try it one day.
This is an Indian buffet to end all Indian buffets. I wouldn't have thought we'd find such a gem in Ft. Wayne. My husband's family has it as a tradition to eat here, so we went one day for the lunch buffet. They have so many options that you have a hard time choosing what to eat. A HUGE amount of vegetarian things, fruit, salad, dessert, and oh, the NAAN! The water glasses are kept full and the place is clean. The food is fresh and plentiful. I can't wait to go back!
Review Source:I'm currently sitting in my house, scarfing down the last of my Super Hot Chicken meal. It was so good I brought home what I couldn't eat.
It's a charming little place, the Taj Mahal. Nestled in a little shopping center, it's not much to look at from the outside. (That it's next to The Ski Pole didn't help the ambiance.) And our waiter was VERY dour. He kept wandering over and telling us how bad it was to be at work. it was creepy.
But the food was excellent. And I'm told -- by everyone we met in Ft. Wayne -- that this is THE place to get Indian food when you're in the area.
And who are we to argue with everyone?
Had a great meal at Taj Mahal last night! Mulligatawny soup was just right. The garlic naan was also quite good.
They had a very nice selection of Indian beers to choose from, I went with the Hayward's 5000 and was not disappointed at all. The mango lassi was delicious as well.
For entrees, I had Lamb Vindaloo and my friend had the Chicken Tikka Saag. The Vindaloo was very flavorful, though it could have been a little spicier for my taste (this would not be a problem for most people I would think though!!). The Chicken Tikka Saag was a dish I had not tried before, but it was really amazing. Spinach and herbs combined with the chicken and spices very nicely.
The service was very quick and friendly, more restaurants should take a cue from Taj Mahal in this category. Cleanliness was another area in which Taj Mahal shined, literally! Everything in sight was quite pristine and that inspires a lot of confidence that the kitchen is maintained in a similar fashion. One area which could use improvement was the ambience. You could hear a pin drop it was so quiet. Perhaps a little more volume and some different music would help, I'm not sure what was playing (it wasn't Indian), but something else would have been better.
Finally, for dessert we took home an order  of Gulab Jamun. We should have taken home 2, or 3! I have had Gulab Jamun on both coasts and everywhere in between, and this should serve as an example of how this dessert really should be. I wish I had their recipe!
This restaurant is definitely worth a visit and I look forward to trying other dishes there the next time I am in Ft. Wayne.
When you first walk in and take stock of your surroundings, you immediately notice the dim lighting, clean layout and tastefully decorated dining room.
I have actually visited the Taj Mahal Indian restaurant two times. Once for dinner, and the other time for their lunch buffet, and while it was a nice enough restaurant with an attentive staff, I was just incredibly underwhelmed by the actual taste and quality of their food.
The lunch buffet was was actually a lot larger than typical Indian buffets. The food was very fresh at the peak lunch time, which was a bonus. Their pitfalls, however, came with the actual implementation of very common dishes like that of their Tandoori Chicken and their Chicken Makhani. The Makhani was so heavily based in tomatoes that if I had added a few noodles and a sprinkle of Oregano to it, I could have been eating Italian food.
I've eaten in many Indian restaurants in my day, but none have underwhelmed me as much as the Taj Mahal. Â I wish I could say more, but NOTHING was memorable. Â Decent enough food, and well priced, but I can't think of anything that sticks out in my mind.
Very good lunch buffet - lots of fresh choices and very delicious. Â I thought that everything was moderately spiced and very tasty for the offerings. Â They also had lots of ways to kick up the spice level if you needed it! Â
The interior is pretty plain but the food more than makes up for it!
The flavors of the food at this restaurant are very rich and portions are large. Â I haven't been able to try out their buffet yet, but the dishes that I've ordered during dinner have always been delicious. Â Staff doesn't go out of their way to make you feel welcome and at home, but they are there when you need them and do their job well and with dignity. Â Their seafood dishes are relatively fresh for the midwest.
Review Source:We took my dad here for his birthday today and we all enjoyed it! Â We visited for the Sunday Buffet, which offers entrees, soup, salad and desserts. Â Dad adored the tandoori chicken and the mild yet tasty options. Â We enjoyed the vegetarian dishes, of which there were several. Â Restrooms are clean and ordinary single seaters (one family, one male, and one female). Â Interior is pretty plain with some nice arches and a few of those textile art pieces on the walls of many Indian restaurants. Â Go for the food and good service, not the decorations.
Review Source:The Sunday lunch buffet is to DIE FOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wasn't a fan of indian food until... the Taj Mahal
If you are interested, but somewhat intimidated, a buffet is a great way to get initiated since if you don't like something you can toss it and try something else--or sample a little of everything.
Do yourself a favor and try it out.
