This place is amazing. I just have to start off by saying you must get a salad when your here because their pesto dressing is out of this world! It's completely homemade and not quite exactly the same consistency every time but its always AMAZING! My wife was not very fond of pesto until I brought her here. The pesto dressing comes with any of their salads but I would suggest the Greek salad. Back in the day they would bring an entire bottle of dressing to the table when you ordered a salad, now they are a little more sparing on the dressing but you can always ask for more. When it comes to the pizza I personally just create my own from their large list of fresh and organic toppings. The crust has sesame seed sprinkled on top which is an interesting twist but its definitely a good one. I also dip my pizza in the pesto dressing, give it a try. If your with a group of people and everyone wants to try something different you can get a slice made with any toppings. They are big slices. The best value is to pair a slice with a salad.
When the season is right I prefer to sit outside, they have a wonderful patio. Most of the outside tables are picnic style. The inside can get a little warm from the oven but that is a nice thing in the winter time. The restaurant has sort of a rustic and organic feel. Come here once and you will keep coming back here forever
I've been going to this place for years now and I have to say I have become disillusioned. Â A slice that used to barely fit into one of their to go-boxes...now 2 slices easily fit. Â I ordered 2 slices last night for my wife and I and the toppings were meager. Â For 10 bucks a slice I expected a lot more. Â I don't think I'll be back.
Review Source:Each time we eat here I'd like it to be better than it turns out, and that's partially because my husband loves it here, but I usually leave a bit disappointed. Â The service is surly, and slooooow, and the pizza is hit or miss.
Then I remember I'm in Taos without too many choices that are better and realize OK give it a little more credit (otherwise this would be a 2 star place in my book).
The sesame crusted pizza is wonderful, (though on our last trip is was missed on my slice, and since no one ever asked if we needed anything after the food was delivered there wasn't a chance to bring it up; we also had to chase down drink refills, the bill, as well as a take out container, and it wasn't a busy afternoon). Â
As everyone mentioned the pesto dressing is amazing, I always save a little from my salad to dip the pizza crust. Â The outdoor patio with picknick tables and umbrellas is a great setting for a meal.
On our next trip, I'm going to try a plain old staple of green chile and pepperoni and see if that goes over better.
OK, so... I have only been there once - because I haven't been back to Taos since then.
It's been a couple of years, but the place actually still occurs to me once in a while and i get a sense of longing!
The pizza was off the hook!
The atmosphere was cute and cozy inside.
The folks were very very sweet.
The next time I'm in Taos, I'm going there!
Maybe one of these days I'll drive up there for the express purpose.
Awesome, local place for great pizza. The ingredients are really fresh, and I love their crust. Also, in case you haven't gathered from other reviews, the slices are "huge", I promise you won't leave hungry.
I tried The Shredder while there. It came out full of tomato, green chile, and pepperoni...couldn't get enough!
The only thing keeping my review from 5 stars is it's a bit on the pricey side for pizza, but they do seem to be using really quality ingredients. Nice local beer selection too!
This is some of the pizza I have ever had. Â Hands down.. Â The best. Â That is saying a lot. Â I am a fat guy and I got fat from too much pizza. Â So I can say with great authority, this is good pizza. Â
Aside from the pizza, the place is kind of funky. Â Lots of tattooed hipsters and such. Â
The prices are decent and the beer is cold. Â I have been looking for reasons to go back to Taos so I can have some more.
I have eaten here many times and it is fantastic. Â Their pizza is superb, but really their house salad, with house pesto dressing is even better.
Their slices are huge (really) and so unless you are super hungry, or are in a large group, I would recommend getting a slice and the house salad.
They put sesame seeds into the crust, which I like, their chile has good flavor, they have about 15 or 20 different choices of pizza and everything I have tried has been great.
Every time I am in Taos I make it a priority to eat at this place - fantastic.
Probably the best pizza I've ever had. A single slice really is "HUGE" as indicated on their menu. You can customize for whatever you want and the ingredients are top notch.
There's enough detail in the other reviews and I'd just be echoing what so many others have said. But really, it's a terrific place. I've been here maybe a half a dozen times over the same amount of years and there isn't a pizza in the country that comes close to Taos Pizza Out Back.
My favorite pizza place on the planet. I occasionally dream about the meals I have enjoyed here. If you ask, they will make the pie 1/2 and 1/2 two separate orders. Two recommendations:
1.) Order a side of pesto (delicious!!)
2.) Accompany your pizza with a pint (or two) of the Monks Amber
WOW, their pizza was great! We got a pesto pizza with olives, tomatoes, onions. Very simple, but delicious. Crust had sesame seeds on it and was hand rolled and almost better than the pizza itself. Â
Price was a little high, but quality was good. We had a drenched caesar salad with it, good dressing but a little heavy handed so note to self: dressing on side next time. There will definitely be a next time- Â I would go back here in a second, in fact I wish I could have it for dinner tonight! Yum.
Great Za, beers and service. They were very friendly and the quality matched. I wish they used better olives, but it didn't "ruin" the pizza. Eclectic and normal pizzas, and the Pesto salad dressing was phenomenal. All in All, a great meal.
ps the Slices, although pricey at $7.95, were huge and by the waitresses recommendation my date and I shared two slices and two beers and a large salad.
We were very happy and didn't feel cheated, in fact we felt like she actually saved us money and we got more bang for our buck.
Worth the 'trip' out back.
Food was amazing. Fun and funky atmosphere. Friendly young family hippy crowd. BEWARE: they charge for refills yet they don't tell you that as they nicely pour away! Our icetea cost more than our pizza!
Pizza is already expensive...hate when they nickel dime you. Ruins their fun hippy atmosphere when you realize they are just greedy. Rather they charge me more for iced tea and give me free refills.
Otherwise 5 stars!
What a surprise and not the good kind either! We have visited Taos Pizza Out Back many times over the past 5 or 6 years and typically thought it was fine. However we went this past week after not going for about 2 years and wow. Service was SLOW I mean 45 minutes for 4 slices of pizza? Only one waitress and she was not the most pleasant. Not rude but not the most friendly either. The guy walking around re-filling our drinks was friendlier. Do they have a new owner or manager??
Food was tasty but not really worth the 45 min wait. We'll be hesitant to go back and not sure I could recommend this place to anyone.
Several friends had recommended this place, so we decided to try it when we arrived to Taos. Â We got there right before 10 p.m. and we asked if they were still serving. Â The lady behind the register said yes, and I later found out they close at 10. Â That was nice of them that they decided to still serve us. Â However, our waitress was not rude, but she really wasn't pleasant either. Â We did get our food fairly quickly, though.
They have some very creative toppings on their pizzas. Â I got one with walnuts (YES! WALNUTS!) and it was delicious, but for $7.95 a slice....I'm not sure the creativity is worth that much. Â These slices are definitely overpriced, but the pizza is delicious and the slices are huge. Â I was satisfied with 1 slice, but could have easily had another. Â I don't eat a lot either. Â It would be better if your group could agree on one pizza to try and buy that whole pizza as opposed to buying by the slice.
They do have several locally brewed beers that are worth trying. Â I convinced our group to go back a second time because it was just that good, but I ended up having to sit out of that one. Â I regret not being able to try another pizza, but definitely feel happy I didn't go. Â From what I heard, a check for one person was about $20...
Oh, by the way, our waitress informed us they don't split checks or take separate orders. Â So if you're all sitting together at a table, expect to have one person get it and sort it out amongst yourselves OR take cash.
FOOD - pizza, variety of interesting toppings
+ great daily soup, spicy
- spaghetti not the best, marinera was chunky, stick to pizza
ATMOSPHERE
+ family friendly, booths and cozy settings.
+ great deco interior
LOGISTICS
- a bit hard to locate in the small Taos village
- try parking as close as you can (if possible) otherwise your shoes will get fitly
CREATIVITY - different unique type of pizza, Santa Fe Brewery's ales.
Pure Taos funk. My Taoseno friends raved about this place & they were right! The restaurant itself is very cool. Highlights:
~ A great patio.
~ Good beers on tap, Rogue for one.
~ Pizza is very good, I had the Shredder.
~ The Greek salad is one of the best salads I've ever had. The fresh made salad dressing is awesome.
Check it out. I normally need to get my fill of local dishes, Carne Adovada...but I will definitely be back to Pizza Out Back.
Easily the crown jewel of food in Taos. If you're the kind of person planning your trip to Taos and reading yelp reviews to find the best places to eat, you have found it. This is it, and I challenge God himself to smite me down if i be lying.
Some notes for those who've been there, done that, and got the T-shirt. Stay away from the seats by the kitchen. It gets really hot inside so in my mind, it's worth waiting a couple minutes for a spot outside to open up.
Service in some words could be described as sporadic. I'd call it more whimsical. They have an odd server set-up. Some days, one person will get your food order, another your drinks, and then a completely different person may be in charge of refilling said drinks...it can make for some confusion.
Pizzas can also take a while, but patience will bring bliss I promise.
Most eaters can easily get by on 1 slice. However, I have had on two occasions been so hungry I'll order a slice of something signature and then dump another 3.50 on another cheese slice to fill the void of my blackhole of a stomach.
Oh my God! I love this place. I grew up going to Taos and never went to Taos Pizza Outback until about 2 years ago and I think I was missing out. It is a nice change from all the Mexican food in Taos. The pizza is great - we get the pizza with all the stuff on it (cheese, tomato sauce, pepperoni, sausage, peppers, onions, and black olives). It has a sesame seed crust which is to die for. We split a Large between the two of us and always have leftovers for another day. If you're there, check out the salad as well. The pesto dressing makes the salad, which is really big for a side salad. The salad consists of lettuce, carrots, onions, and bean sprouts, but keep the dressing to dip your crust in. You should also try some of the beer on tap (if you are a beer fan). The Santa Fe brewing co. makes some great beer! We've never had the dessert, so I'm not sure about that.
In terms of the atmosphere, I think it screams "Taos." Most of the waiters/waitresses are hippies and you feel as though they've all gone out back and smoked a joint or two, but you've got to respect the culture :) I especially love that you get to color while you're waiting for your food. These drawings then get posted around the restaurant.
The place is sort of small and always pretty crowded, so expect a wait if you go during Lunch/Dinner hours. We hit it around 4 PM this last time we went to eat and got in pretty fast. There's outdoor seating as well and if the weather's nice, try to sit out there. You can watch the cows next door munch on some grass and enjoy the views of Wheeler Peak.
Good food, will always make a point of going here when in Taos.
I came to Taos Pizza Out Back based on a travel guide I had lying around, so I kind of knew what I was getting into. The book had warned service was slow, and they were right. However, the wait staff were all very friendly, and they even gave me some garlic cheese sticks on the house while I was waiting for my pie.
And the pizza was very good! I had a "Taos" (black beans, green chiles, etc.) -- the crust was that perfect combination of just-burnt on the bottom with some give throughout, the cheese was similarly perfectly cooked, and the sesame seeds on the outer crust were a great touch.
Beer selection was pretty eclectic, so I tried a pint of Mirror Pond IPA. It was a little less cold than I would have liked, but eh.
I'll probably come by here again on my way through Taos at some point, but I'll be sure to come when it's not crowded (if that ever happens).
We were all Mexican-fooded out from our time in Santa Fe, and we don't do the fancy restaurant thing while on road trips - so this top-Yelp-ranked pizza place caught our eye.
All I have to say is this: What is wrong with you, Taos? Â Pizza Out Back was overflowing with customers. Â When we left, there was a line out into the cold to get in - people all but eagerly rubbing their hands together.
And for what? Â That totally beats me. Â We were served raw pizza. Â Raw! Â Not raw, like, vegan raw, but raw like, forgot-to-cook-the-dough-all-the-way-through raw. Â And this raw pizza took nearly two hours to come to fruition. Â 15 minutes waiting in the combination waiting-to-be-seated/paying-for-food line. Â 25 minutes waiting for a waitress to take our orders. Â And at least 40 minutes waiting for the pizza to be served.
To be fair, only my pizza was raw. Â My dad's was cooked, but it was disgusting. Â After one bite of his, I decided I'd take my chances with my raw dough and possible salmonella instead.
I had a bizarre thought as we were leaving - I think it was my brain thinking stupid thoughts to distract itself from being pissed. Â That day, we'd just eaten at Body in Santa Fe for brunch - a raw, vegan hippie cafe that had a creative-sounding Raw Pizza on the menu. Â We had tried to order it, but they were out.
Maybe Taos Pizza Out Back was God/fate/the cosmos throwing down retribution on me for daring to order anything as blasphemous and wrong as raw pizza. Â "I'll show you raw pizza!" roars karma. Â Sigh. Â I'll never do it again.
Great pizza! Â I spotted this place from the road one night when I should have been focusing on driving but so glad I did. Â
It's set back into a dark wooded area but the colorful Christmas style lights caught my eye. Â We didn't crash but were curious so the next night my partner and I decided to see what was back there and it was this amazing little pizza place. Â It's got a rustic cabin type of atmosphere and when we drove into the parking lot I felt like I was somewhere on the Bayou. Â It's a very casual and fun place. Â The pizza menu is great and it's tough to pick one. Â I really think you should visit this place if you're in Taos.
I'm sorry to be so blunt, but the pizza here really sucks. It reminds me of the Pizzeria Uno chain - thick, tasteless dough covered with as many toppings as necessary to obscure the flavorless sauce and cheese.
For the honor of eating this pizza you must pay an exorbitant sum of money and deal with the typical Taos-Attitude bullsh*t. I'm from New York, and if there's one thing I don't like, it's a bullsh*t attitude. And people who mess up pizza. People who mess up pizza with a bullsh*t attitude? Geddafugouttahere!
Look, I know Taos isn't NYC, but you can do better. Much better. I recommend Pizanos (<a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.taospizza.com&s=3157a71b1acc53534ea841b7c16e28622a1375880869eb976e24edc97fa229aa" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.taospizza.com</a>): it's only a couple of miles down the road on State Highway 150 and it is far, far superior. Pizanos is still a little pricey, but the quality of the food and the friendliness of the servers make it worth it.
Stay out of the Out Back.
I love pizza and I love Taos, so naturally, I love Taos Pizza Out Back. Â Funny, the first time I went there I couldn't see the restaurant from the road... it was out back. Â :)
So many great pizzas to choose from, and I love most of them. Â They have a pretty great green chile sauce, a wicked pesto sauce and some of the best cheeses in the state of New Mexico. Â If you want a specialty pizza but want to try more than one at a time, ask them to make half your pizza with one and half with the other. Â They will gladly oblige.
The Shredder with Italian sausage and pepperoni is yummy. Â The Portabella is probably my all-time favorite. Â The White pizza is delicious with their salad dressing for dipping. Â For vegetarians who love pizza, welcome to heaven.
This is easily one of the best pizza places in New Mexico!
When I lived in Taos....this is where I ate. When I'm in Taos....this is where I eat.
Its my favorite pizza. Make sure you order a salad so that you can taste their custom-special-home-made pesto salad dressing, which tastes great on a slice of pizza as well. I usually go for the Sandy's special. They have outside and inside dining, I prefer outdoors here, weather permitting.
If your in town for the ski season and your with friends or have children, this is a great place to go that is easy if everyone is not into new mexico styled fare.
Meh.
Service was horrible (took about 40 minutes to get a salad and had to go to the front and ask to have our water refilled).
Pizza was alright. Â I've had much better. (However, I must say I don't know what the competition is like in Taos since I was just visiting). Â The dough was way to heavy and thick. Â
Music selection was awesome - oldies and classic rock.
My favorite pizza in Taos. The "Outback" is a great local spot for giant slices of pizza, and a great salad (I love their "special" pesto salad dressing!).
Try the Sandy's Special (chicken, green peppers, pineapple, and BBQ sauce). So good!
Have been going here for years... years and years, and it never falters in quality. Â
They serve beer and wine. And have paper down on the tables with crayons to keep everyone occupied until their food arrives. I have seen some pretty good art work up on the walls in the bathrooms! Fun for all ages.
After a day of skiing in Taos, nothing hits the spot quite like a shower followed with a beer and slice of pizza at Taos Pizza Out Back. Â The staff is friendly and will help get a group of people seated fast. Â
I have a thing for pizza with green chile, so this place is a lock down for satisfying my cravings. Â I go here every year, but this year, the pizza wasn't as spectacular as I remember. Â
4 out of 5, though I might be harsher than I should be. Maybe next year, I will re-rate it.
Pretty good pizza. No need to go out of your way, but if you're cravin pizza and you're not too far away, check it out. You won't be disappointed. I think we had one with chicken and pesto. Good salads too.
Careful or you'll miss the sign. Drive down the little driveway, the little pizza shack's in the back.
This is quite possibly the most delicious pizza I've ever had.
I think it's the bread at the edge of the slice. They the braid the dough into twists, season it and top it with a little bit of olive oil and toasted sesame seeds. Why can't every pizza place put sesame on their bread? So simple, yet so good. I also appreciate that they have a very vegetarian-friendly menu; the white pizza is my favorite.
This place feels more like a hipster day care center than a gourmet pizzeria. They give customers paper place mats and a basket crayons so people can draw while they wait for their food. The best artwork ends up on the bathroom walls.
Seriously, I'm emotionally tethered to New Mexico because of Taos Pizza Out Back. One day when I'm ridiculously wealthy, on weekends I'll fly into New Mexico just to have lunch here. Then I'll spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the desert.
