Good Authentic Thai food, it is a family owned restaurant. Server is wife and husband cooks in the kitchen. They are understaffed so it takes some time to come out on your table, but when food is good waiting doesn't matter a lot. We ordered some chicken starter , don't remember the name but it wad really good. I tried black pepper chicken good, but my friend ordered Cashew chicken , it was very good and quantity wise you can eat two times for sure. They give some onion salad complimentary dipped in some sweet water, it really tastes good.
If you really want to try Thai food, you should really go over there, at-least for Peoria its very good.
Wow! Tried to have lunch at Taste of Thai this afternoon. I must emphasize the word TRIED... Arrived to a 'please seat yourself' sign so we figured we would be in and out quickly. Plenty of seating available. Not acknowledged by anyone. No menus provided. My friend had to go grab them off the waiter station. Noticed a group of three diners reviewing menus without having been served drinks yet. Same experience as others have mentioned with just one individual serving. He came over to us and asked who had arrived first. We pointed to the group of three. He went and took their orders and then returned to our table. We ordered our food and had to ask to put drink orders in. Now to be fair, there was a larger party on the opposite side of the restaurant. We chalked it up to them just attending to that party. I also need to point out that we had less than 45 minutes for lunch. The waiter started to take orders from the larger party while we waited for drinks. We were then served the soup and spring roll that were included with our lunch specials. Still no drinks served at our table or the trio of diners'. The soup was barely warm and the tofu looked old and was falling apart. The spring roll started off pretty tasty until I bit down and felt something hard. I spit it out into my napkin and saw what appeared to be a rock. Yes, a rock. Thank goodness it didn't break my tooth!! We still hadn't given up hope though.. still no drink or entree. At 20 minutes remaining, I finally decided I'd had enough and put my coat on. The waiter came out of the kitchen at that moment and I let him know we had to leave to get back to work. He said he would check to see if the food was ready so we could take it to go and then disappeared into the kitchen again. After 2-3 minutes of waiting with no sign of the waiter, we threw $4 on the table and left. I had been there a few times before and the food was great. Sadly, this was my friend's first time there and I had recommended it. Eek! Unfortunately, the service and the rock I bit down on made today my last visit...
Review Source:This was one of the worst dining experiences I have had in my adult life. First of all, the restaurant was absolutely freezing. My girlfriend, and several other customers, kept jackets on the entire time. I kept my scarf on. The service was unusually slow, despite the fact that there were maybe 9 people in the restaurant total. The most egregious thing, however, was that the waitress served my food a good 20 to 25 minutes before my girlfriend's food. The server kept insisted it was coming, but a few other people (who had ordered after us) received their food before my girlfriend. I can understand if the server forgot to write down an order or got it wrong, but communication would have been appreciated.
The food was decent -- but not nearly enough vegetables on the plate. A good three-fourths of the meal was rice noodles, with only three or four scattered pieces of broccoli and a paltry amount of shredded carrots. We ended up taking my girlfriend's meal to go, as we had both had enough of the slow service and freezing cold atmosphere. The one saving grace is that we were able to watch an entire hour long episode of a tv show on their enormous HDTV while we waited for our food. If I had had a $20 bill in my wallet, I would have put it on the table and left.
Never again! Â They need Restaurant Impossible to go in there and clean this place up. Â Service is turtle slow. Â I could not stop laughing with a customer who called in for a carry out order and still had to wait 1 hr and 30 minutes to receive her food after she arrived. Â The owner was making every excuse in the book. Â I did not receive my entire dine in order (I was not charged for the missing items). Â That was fine...the sooner I could leave, the better.
Review Source:Severely understaffed, so the service is really lacking. Â There was just one person front of the house who was taking phone calls, doing carry out, and serving tables. Â Also, I'm pretty sure there was only one person cooking food in the back. Â It took over an hour to get 3 dishes plus our soup, which is a bit ridiculous- I guess they make the soup to order? Â The owner (and cook) came out to apologize, and he seems like a genuinely nice person. Â
When we finally received our orders, the wait didn't seem AS bad, because the food is pretty good (especially for Peoria). Â We ordered the coconut soup, pad thai, massaman curry, and almond beef. Â Everything tasted authentic, and the prices were right. Â It's too bad they're so understaffed, because if not, I'd definitely go back.
First time I went there I thought food was decent and service friendly.
I went back yesterday for the second time and was really disappointed. Ordered steamed chive dumplings. Came out fried and just disgusting, like it was not fresh. Sent back the plate and asked the chef to have a taste. The server came back saying the chef though it was good. Server did not take it off the bill or apologized. I was so grossed out I did not finish my red curry. For that reason I will not go back. I don't even get me started on the ambiance or the decor ....
Lol I've experienced some terriblle service in Peoria, but this takes the cake, my girlfriend and I made a joke of it and just wanted to see how long it would take to get service, but we literally sat for 25 minutes before our order was taken. I never even got the Thai Iced tea I ordered and had to get up and ask the cook for some waters as we were served food with no drinks. The curry i ordered was watery and no taste only heat, the curry fried rice my Girlfriend had was ok nothing special. Here Tofu was cooked decently in all fairness. It sucks because with few vegetarian options in Peoria and the ability to have tofu in almost evry dish here I wish this place was better but its not.
Review Source:It's been years since I had been to Taste of Thai so my wife and I decided to stop in as we do love Thai food. Â We've heard comments from friends that the place had gone downhill, but we went in hoping for the best. Sadly, we should have listened to our friends.
First, we were seated in a silent dining room-- no background music playing. On the other side of the dining space, we saw someone measuring a piece of plywood. A few minutes into pursuing the menu, the man began sawing on the plywood. This continued through the majority of our meal. Turns out he was covering up a busted window. Â
Our server was a young teenager with limited English. My wife began by ordering hot tea. He explained that it wouldn't be possible, as the tea had burnt. Upon further questioning, he told us that the tea had been brewed earlier that morning and sat all day. For whatever reason, it wasn't possible to brew more.
We both ordered the hot and sour soup, which to me tasted like lemon pledge. Our entrees, a classic pad Thai and a yellow curry, were okay. A few of the sweet potato chunks in my dish were ice cold in the center, leaving me to wonder how fresh the dish really was.
We left extremely disappointed in the ambience and likely won't be back given that the food was just so-so.
Honestly, if you're hungry for Thai food try making it at home instead.
Woohoo! Â This restaurant is the reason why I created a yelp account. Â The food and service is simply outstanding, and it is the best dining experience, every time.
The owner is friendly and is always willing to give suggestions to help you find delicious new flavor experiences despite his accent.
The service is prompt and courteous, and the food comes out quickly, but with the highest quality.
Will not return. Â This place has gone downhill big time. Â Our waiter was an older gentlemen who did just about everything wrong and spoke little English. Â The food wasn't too bad, but it was not good either. Â Our party had ordered a mix of dishes, and none of them stood out as being particularly enjoyable. Â Too bad...
Review Source:I have eaten here twice for the lunch special. Â Maybe not the BEST food I've ever eaten, but I moved here from a town with no Thai place, so I am glad for the option. Decent serving size, clean restaurant, good prices, friendly waiters (I think also the owners).
Very good curries and soups; had one unusual appetizer that was included with the meal, but still good. Â LOVE the Thai iced tea!!
The food at Taste of Thai is always good; I have literally never been disappointed in the food. I'm not a huge connoisseur of Thai food, but I do like it, and for my money, this is good Thai food, with servings large enough to get two meals out of, if you so choose... I rarely do.
But. Ugh. The service is inconsistent, ranging from pretty decent when the owner's wife (I think?) is out front to outright horrendous when it's someone else running the show. Our waiter didn't bring us water at all (the owner came out from the kitchen to do it) and never refilled our empties, didn't actually take our order (again, the owner came out), and never brought us our bill. I think the kitchen is pretty much capable of doing one dish at a time, and last time we went, we got my husband's dish first, then our appetizer about five minutes later, and finally my dish about seven minutes after that.
As others have said, I believe this is the only Thai restaurant in Peoria, which is why we still go here, but it seems like this place is trying to save money by not fully staffing, and after our last visit, I'm not particularly interested in returning. I think I'll stick to takeout in the future, or save my Thai cravings for when I'm in Bloomington.
In sum: the food here is good, really good, but if you walk in and more than one table is already seated, you should probably turn around and try again another day.
AMAZING DISHES, AMAZING SERVICE, it's worth the wait, the owner of the restaurant drives into Chicago sometimes twice a week 3 hours there 3 hours back just for the FRESHES HERBS, EXOTIC ingredients, and best deals so they can keep the price really a great value for a warm home cooked meal by someone who actually cares about you and your well being! Â Hard to find people who care so much for their patrons!
Review Source:first of all, i like to call this place Yaste of Yhai because of the weird font they used on their sign out front.
so YoY is pretty amazing, but ONLY if you follow this one rule that i have tested and know to be true.
ONLY order takeout from YoY. do not go in, sit down, wait forever to order, wait forever to be served, all while listening to muffled music and what sounds like a never-ending bar fight from the place next door.
also, for some reason the takeout versions of the same stuff you order in the restaurant are about twice the amount of food.
you can call ahead and order and they'll have it ready for you when you get there.
and the lady that ALWAYS answers the phone used to be kinda mean, but recently has done a 180 and is the sweetest little thing ever. i'm still confused by that, but pleased at the same time. hmmm..
the massaman curry is so delicious! and the thai tea is so good!
and the prices aren't bad!
just don't you dare sit down.
I really love Thai food, and having eaten at some pretty wonderful Thai places around the country, I was so excited to find this place in town.
When we arrived at the restaurant, it was empty, and a thai grandma came out of the kitchen. "Well this looks authentic," I thought :) I ordered a yellow curry dish and my husband ordered the pad thai. Both were very tasty. I also had a thai iced tea, which was comparable to others I have had at other places.
Overall, I enjoyed the experience, and I would return. While the food is not "pricey" by any means, I'd say you get more for your money at other places. Others have said that the service was super slow here. That was not my experience. It took about 15 minutes to get our food from the time we ordered it.
Yes, I'd agree the ambience isn't much (one side of the restaurant does indeed look like a converted office space, and the other side looks more pretty with deep red paint and some prints from Thailand), but it's clean and the food is good.
The lackluster ambiance is matched by the hit-or-miss service, but the proprietor is genuinely well-meaning and makes sure you get the best Thai food in Peoria. Â Of course, it's probably the only Thai food in Peoria. Â
The som tam (spicy papaya salad) is pretty good and their spring rolls are done with thin crêpes rather than rice paper as you might see elsewhere.  The pad woon sen's been pretty tasty lately.  Most anything can be made vegetarian--they're flexible.
If you feel like eating pretty good Thai food in what feels like a converted office space, Yaste of Yhai's for you.
Note that all of the prices are a dollar higher than what's listed on the menu. Â This is conveniently mentioned on the menu, but easy to miss. Â They also don't have a liquor license, so the wine and other alcoholic beverages on the menu aren't actually available.
