Nice family style diner. Went for lunch and it was decently busy. Was able to sit right away and the service was good. Ordered the tomato basil soup and the tomato wedge? I forget the name, but it was chicken salad on top of a cut out tomato. Chicken salad was a good portion and very tasty. Was served with side of fruit. It was perfect for a quick light meal.
Review Source:We hit Tate's place on our way through Indiana when we wanted a sit-down place to grab some lunch. Â It was a hit. Â Big menu with several good wrap/panini options for vegetarians. Â All my reviews are harping on that topic lately, but this is our first summer on the road with a vegetarian in tow, and I sure appreciate it when other Yelp reviews share that kind of info.
Sandwiches come with a choice of fruit (which was fresh, bountiful and well-presented) or fries (waffle or delicious sweet potato). Â Service was friendly, if not particularly speedy. Â The pies looked good; we were too stuffed to give them a try.
People of all ages in here; families with kids and some retired people who greeted like regulars. Â Looks like Tate's participates in Restaurant.com--we noticed a patron using a certificate.
If this were in our hometown, I'll bet we'd be regulars. Â For travelers, it's pretty convenient to the Tollway (I-90/I-80) as well as I-94--it's just straight down Willowcreek from the exits, on the left side.
Tucked away off a busy street is a very good mom and pop style restaurant where the casual dining does not mean casual service nor casual quality. The food is hot and tasty along with affordable. Service is consistently good regardless as to the busyness of the restaurant. Tate is the owner and one of the cooks so you know who to compliment. I have experienced both breakfast and lunch. Must say the perch was almost equal to Teibel's and the waffle fries are very good.
Review Source:Traditional breakfast fair. Good & wholesome. Service very friendly & efficient. My one gripe, which I have with most breakfast places, is the hash browns are those shredded potatoes that must come from some wholesaler (not homemade). They are OK but not like the homemade they have at the Cornerstone in Sacramento.
Review Source:There is no "culinary flair" as suggested in another review, but what you DO get here is a big American Breakfast in a mom and pop shop. Â Tate is the owner. Breakfast daily, late on Wednesdays. Â The staff here was so pleasant and the waitresses really had it together. Â This is the halfway stop for my sister in SWMich and me in Chicago, so we dont wait in lines. Â Thank God for the counter. Next up: LUNCH :D
Review Source:For Portage this is definitely a five star affair as a hometown mom and pop place. Portage is notorious for chain restaurants and very little original businesses. In fact I don't think I can count 5 non-chain restaurants in Portage. Tate's is decorated cute and cozy in a fall palate with a gorgeous fireplace in the center. I've only been here for lunch hours and have always been impressed with the lunch menu. Lot's of sandwiches, soups and salads as well as wraps, chops and what not too. I guess it's your typical american fare but with a bit of an upscale culinary twist, The sweet potato fries are to die for and the desert case always looks yummy but I've always been to stuffed from my meal. The location is great too, with a pretty outdoor dining area and situated right off the bike trails. Probably the best thing Portage has gotten in quite a few years.
Review Source:Delightful little restaurant in Portage, Indiana. We always go there for breakfast, but I'm sure their lunch and dinners are good as well. It is kind of a small restaurant, and I'm not a fan of the florescent lights, but the staff is awesome!! Our food always arrives in a timely manner, and we usually end up taking a bunch home because they are generous with their portions. Grab a bite here sometime, you won't be disappointed!
Review Source:The first thing I noticed about Tate's was how happy everyone looked. No customers were flagging down their servers, no one was grumbling about how long their food was taking and no one was sending dishes back. And for good reason! The menu was extensive and it took me awhile to even decide on something to choose. The servers were outgoing and helpful. Despite the fact that the place was full, no one looked frustrated or annoyed.
The food was perfect. Large potions, fresh ingredients and the bread was outstanding. I never had to ask for anything. The melon garnish on the place was surprisingly fresh, especially for mid-October.
I highly recommend Tate's to anyone looking for breakfast or lunch.
My Dad and I go here almost every weekend and it never gets old... never... this is a great place to go for breakfast! Â They have great food and I HIGHLY recommend the homemade cinnamon toast that they serve on weekends, seriously, I order whatever I can that comes with toast just so I can get it. Â Yes, it's that good. Â They do tend to get a little packed on weekends, but I've never had to wait more than 15 or 20 minutes. If you're looking for a good breakfast place in Portage, this is it!
Review Source:This is one of the bright spots of Portage. First of all, they are located right off of the bike trail in Portage. I used to stop in on occasion and order lunch here after a 10 mile bike ride. Not a bad option considering the surrounding businesses. Secondly, their perogies are the best in the area, hands down!! Plus, they have Saturday morning karaoke for the locals...and trust me, they eat that shit up like honey! All of Portages finest come out and let loose. It's a shame they don't serve alcohol, because I needed it a few times.
Review Source:Sophie's is located off of the Portage Bike Trail on Willowcreek road, It's a homey place, serving many dishes including an assortment of sandwiches, hamburgers, and house salads.
The price of the meals will turn many casual diners away, a simple sandwich with fries can run upwards of $10 dollars, but the quality of the food is very high.
One thing not to miss when eating at Sophies are the pierogies, they're made fresh in the restaurant and are incredibly delicious. Fillings include sweet cheese, potato, or sauerkraut and all are fried in copious amounts of butter.
Overall, Sophies Kitchen is a nice homey place with an assortment of meals, but  you can get most of their menu items at the same quality for a lower price at other restaurants. If anything, go there for the Pierogies.
