In this city you see all kinds of clubs come and go. Some you probably didn't lose any sleep when they closed and others, they are etched in your memories forever. Enter the Ten Eleven, the small club with a big heart! Here is my rule of thumb whenever I offer my patronage to any musical venue, would I go there even if I didn't exactly know which bands were playing there that night? For this place I must say a resounding yes! But in all fairness I feel it is important that I must must speak of the pros and cons of this place.
The cons: Absolutely none! None that I can think of.
And the pros: This place is run by veterans who have all been in the music scene for years be it in bands or have had their own clubs prior to this. So they know the perspective of being a patron and as a band. And treat their patrons and bands as such, which creates a really great energy there. Another pro: the stage setup.
The stage is setup low to the ground so you don't feel like your view is obstructed when any band is playing. While I have seen a few comments where people have been critical of the stage setup, in my opinion it adds to your experience there. I have been to clubs and venues where the stage is set so high it feels like there is a disconnect between the band and the audience. But here the music is in your face and the line between the band and audience quickly diminishes.
Another thing that I really enjoy about this place are the bartenders and selection of brews. First the beers are El Cheapo here! They are priced from low to high. So you can get a Lone star to drink with your bros for 2 bucks or grab a craft~beer from Lagunitas or the Oskar Blues for less than 4 bucks and impress your friends. That is beyond ultra-cheapo! A really cool thing they have going is that they have a select amount of brews so it makes it that much easier to pick something. I have been to spots where they have a ten-thousand beer selection, the brews are hidden from view and the bartenders pressure you to make a decision. But here, not the case.
The biggest Pro and major selling point of the Ten-eleven are the friendly bartenders. On this night I think the bartender was Brandon, I had a specific question about a beer that they were selling and he was more than happy to answer any questions I had. He seemed very knowledgeable and personable. In addition he pointed to each beer and identified each of their tastes using brew-speak like "hoppy", "wheaty" etc. He also asked me what my favorite beer was, which in all honesty I was taken a back. I'm so used to going to clubs where the bartenders act like they are too cool for school. Or wave their hands at you to make a decision or just for you to leave their area altogether. I thought that was a real classy gesture and I haven't forgot that. I don't think I ever will.
All and all the Ten-Eleven is a really cool and laid-back place. So if you like your music loud and your brewskies cheap by all means check this place out! You might get lucky and catch a drummer's stick from a band that is playing three feet away from you!
              Think Globally. Drink Locally.
As a dive bar this place is great and if you look at the other comments the palace has a lot of heart and cheep drinks. As a music venue....
This place has major issues as a music venue. They book a lot of bands, local/national different genres but the sound is terrible. They do not have an in house sound tech and most bands who book there do not travel with a tech. They book everyone so questions of taste would come into play for the booker but the truth is that anyone can play at The Ten Eleven and that is probably the one good thing about this "music venue" for local bands that cannot get the time of day at a place like Sam's Burger Joint.
The Ten Eleven has a decent beer selection and great prices. It only receives a low rating on the "music venue" side.
You know what I love, finding little hidden bars in our beloved city.
Upon strolling from the VFW Post 76, I heard someone jamming out in a little building about a stone's throw from my location. I decided to check it out, and behold it was another bar. Yayy!!!
The cover was $5 but they had about 3 different bands along with some comedian performers, which was also a plus.
This bar is small, like single garage small....however, it's pretty awesome. What's even better they have a good selection of craft brews. They have a patio area for the smokers with it being so close to the other establishment you get background music from them. So support our Local music scene and stop by the Ten Eleven.
Can't stress how great this place is. Â This venue goes out of their way to book so many bands on any given night of the week that I find myself going over to just support the place in fear that it can one day get priced out because of the riverwalk expansion.
If you love indie music and you've just moved to San Antonio and you haven't found your place just yet. Â
Start here.
My only complaint about the venue is their online calendar is driven thru a MySpace website that doesn't list upcoming shows to view a little easier at a glance....
Hole in the wall venue with heart. $2 Lone Star, usually $5 for cover but you don't mind paying because this place has heart. You get everything from high schoolers playing their first show outta the garage to national touring indie bands, all in a tiny little shoebox full of attractive hipsters. When you're done ruining your hearing, stumble a few feet down the River Walk extension to the VFW where they'll sell you a bucket of beers at 1:59am.
Review Source:I absolutely LOVE this place. When it first opened it was named The Warhol but since ownership has changed so has the name. None of this has changed the core of this venue.
The Ten Eleven is a big supporter of local musicians. If you go to their website they always have locals on the bill. The great thing is that they also get musicians from out of town that are still not too big but big enough to bring a crowd.
The venue itself isn't huge but it has this great back patio which is rather large and a great place to take a break from the music. They always have great specials on beer that will bring you back every weekend. The employees are really fantastic and the whole venue is really warm and inviting and will make you fall in love with this place every time you go.
