Small bar located in Silverlake, filled with Hipsters
Drinks only $5 during Happy Hour.
Happy Hour on weekends!
This place would be chill if it wasn't so damn loud inside. Â The live performer plays rock so loud you can't even have a decent conversation with your friends.
Saw a couple people who came here alone to enjoy the "music" and drink. Â I guess that's better since there won't be much talking.
Good for people who want to relive some stress and yell at the top of your lungs! You won't look crazy, I swear. Everyone's yelling in there haha
Stopped by with a large group for a bachelor party and had a fantastic time!
our large group was easily accommodated in the seating area in the back which gave us a little separation from everyone else. Their Manhattans are AMAZING! The only thing that could make their Manhattan better was if it was part of happy hour...WHICH IT IS! One of the best Manhattans I can recall ever having. I will definitely be back hopefully sooner rather than later!
The final ingredient listed on the house drink is magic.
I had been craving a sazerac for a while. A week to be sure. My last attempt at this sort of bar came a week before and needless to say, due to circumstances bordering on ridiculous it didn't happen.
The barkeep suggested $5 happy hour drinks. A $5 Manhattan would be good. To start.
A dark, rustic bar that despite its location had pretty mixed crowd (thankfully) and equally killer selection of brown spirits and happy hour specials. Â Beer selections range from $3 Tecates to PBRs (or course) to smaller brews usually coming in 'round $7. Killer happy hour specials at $5 , down from $12 normally for house cocktails.
It's possible there's a Franklin stove on one wall. Â Old Timey, a little kitschy but it works, dark, but this is a bar, you know. Â There's a little outdoor spot for a smoke and a drink out back, always nice. Â
Good music, blues from Big Mama Thorton. To Jimi. Â It reminded me of Sassafras. Â Same owners as Sassafras. "That makes a lot of sense..." Â Attempting to order a Pimm's Cup was met with "good, if you like Pimm's Cups..." which wasn't very inspiring. Â So fine, they specialize in the whiskeys and bourbons, I can deal with that and hey, I wasn't going going to complain about a $5 drink anyway. Â
Noted Absinthe night on Tuesday and Whiskey Wednesday, would have to come back for that, as if that's what I needed more of in my life.
I've had a couple friends write bad reviews about this place so I'm going to neutralize that a bit.... since I've had better luck here! Heh.... Â Although I do agree the drinks here are a bit overpriced. Â I guess that does come hand in hand with their selection, which covers a diversity of scotches, whiskeys, beer and some other stuff in the menu that I skimmed over (higher end drinks). Â Bartender wasn't particularly friendly/chatty/exceptional, but whatevs. Â He served the Allagash White, I gave him the card. Â Done.
The decor inside is pretty sweet. I've visited this place on both busy and chill occasions, so I think you'll have a better time if it's a less crowded night, obviously.
There's occasionally a band playing some pretty good stuff in the corner to the left of the bar ... one time this guy was playing some chopsticks-type stuff (whatever that means. Pulled that out of my ass) on a piano. Â Pretty ridiculous.
As for the crowd, super hipster, and a bit older. Â Maybe not my scene. Â Yet.
Parking is pretty easy... do it on the street.
Overall, pretty nice chill bar - good for pregaming Los Globos, if you're into that - that I happened to not have a bad experience at yet, apparently.
Low key bar located in the Silver Lake area. Â The place reminds me of a 1920's vintage bar; almost like a speak easy. Â
Overall, a night place to hangout for a quick drink or as I like to call a starter. Â I ordered the Old Fashion to get that burn going and thought it was okay at best. Â I kinda like my orange zest crushed a tad bit to release that scent, but it wasn't bad. Â Though I didn't finish it cause I'm such a lightweight now.
This is definitely a casual bar for a quick cocktail and run. Â Not a place to bring a date but I would say if you're just chilling with friends then it's okay. - Enjoy!
Great, sophisticated atmosphere with tasty, decently-expensively priced drinks. My bartender wasn't the friendliest, but my friends had better, more welcoming experiences with other tenders that same night.
Smokers should know that there is a door to a side smoking area near the back.
Come on guys, how hard is it to get great beer? The beer offering is tiny and already tired. If only they'd rotate the offerings quicker!
Otherwise the build out is much improved which saves it from it getting only 1 star. Though if the windows opened to catch that afternoon sun it would be MUCH better.
I've only been here for happy hour. But happy hour is awesome, and runs even on Saturday, from 5:00 - 8:00. Â Perfect for a pre-dinner cocktail.
Happy hour gives you a wide range of well crafted classic cocktails for $5 each (as well as one beer, I believe.) Â I loved the Manhattan, and the Old Fashioned was good as well. Â The Sloe Gin Fizz was tasty, though it's quite a bit sweeter; that's what you should order if you're not a whisky lover.
For those of you who are whisky lovers -- venturing off of the happy hour menu would be a great treat. Â They have a wide, well-curated selection of whisk(e)ys of various sorts, on a well organized menu. Â My budget means I'm sticking to happy hour . . . but the regular menu is tempting, too.
I met a couple of friends here on a Saturday at 5:00, so it was not too crowded. Â The atmosphere is dim but not too dark, and elegant. Â At least early in the evening it is not too loud, so you can actually hear your conversation partners speak; from looking at other reviews, I see it may be louder at night. Â The bar started filling up quickly while I was there, and of course, 9 out of every 10 people were full on hipsters in their natural habitat. Â But don't complain, non-hipsters -- what else do you expect in that neighborhood?
There's metered parking on the street, and some free spots on side streets. Â Parking is not a breeze but not impossible, especially if you're willing to feed a meter.
I went to this place with very little understanding of what to look for in a bourbon or whisky, and ended up being schooled in some of the best drops by the helpful and friendly woman behind the bar. I'm really grateful for the information and will definitely be able to make more informed decisions when ordering stinky brown liquid in the future.
Review Source:Great drinks. Great vibe.
There was no cover, there is no line to get in.
You will have to wait to order a drink. It might be a small battle, but when is it not?
The space itself is not huge and it is a kind of pocketed that makes your evening there a little more intimate. It is, however, very loud.
They actually know what to do with absinthe.
I went here on a Saturday Night last November 2012.
There was no line and no cover..and we arrived VERY early around 7pm-8pm?
VENUE ITSELF
Small, tiny, intimate, interesting historic decor - almost like a speakeasy, prohibition era style. Â Round bar in the middle. Small sophisticated dive bar feel.
VENUE/AMBIENCE/CROWD
I was there very early so there were few people, but seems like a casual, laid back place that gets lots of locals and also interesting, artsy hipster Los Feliz people =)
DRINKS
Drinks were AMAZING!
Amazing rum, scotch, whiskey tastings, beer, mixed cocktail drinks (mixologist style) for a typical price
It's all about a small place to meet people, have deep conversations, and ... mainly enjoying the AMAZING high quality drinks!!! if you enjoy that, you will LOVE this place!
Ugh hate this place. Â Terrible service and LAME crowd. Â I came here one night and racked up a pretty big tab but when I wanted to close out I could barely get a bartender to even look at me. Â Maybe they were hoping I would leave my card so they could charge me extra or add a big tip... ha, I don't think so! Â I made sure to get it back and to show my disapproval. Â Will NOT be returning.
Review Source:I've been here twice:
1. Â On a Saturday night
2. On a Saturday afternoon (Lush you say? How dare you. This is a judgement free zone)
Conclusion: Saturday afternoon is greater than Saturday night.
Saturday night:
- If you arrive around 9:30 pm, be prepared to feel like a sardine in a small bar.
- Parking sucks (Oh welcome to LA)
- It's super busy and takes forever to get a drink
Saturday afternoon:
- HAPPY HOUR! (2pm - 7pm)
- Parking is everywhere! (by LA standards, we found street parking a block away)
- Friendly bartender
- There's room to stretch!
- Again, $5 drinks!
Conclusion II: Day drinking is great.
PROS:
*Friendly bartenders and staff.
*Great people-watching. There are tons of stylish hipsters to gawk at.
*Nice music.
CONS:
*I went here on a Saturday night, and the small bar was ridiculously overcrowded. There was nowhere to comfortably stand because there were so many people around, and the line to use the restroom seemed to stretch to infinity.
*There isn't a parking lot so you have to get lucky when it comes to street parking.
OVERALL:
I'd like this bar if it had more space to accommodate the crowd, but unfortunately, I wouldn't go back.
This is a pretty cool place! Tyler was enticed by the simple window sign and I remember  my good yelper buddy Haik K. telling me about this place and it's signature drink. We were bored as fudge walking in silverlake so we decided why not. We killed some time and we were the second group in here on Wednesday night.
As cool as their signature drinks sounded $5 happy hour sounded a hell of a lot better to me and my wallet. We took a seat at the bar and were greeted by a really chill bartender, cool dude.
For the happy hour we went with 4 of the 9 drinks listed. Tyler had the Old Fashioned, I had the Hairy Manmosa, and the other 2 escape me because yep they were that good. We left with a strong buzz and a reasonable tab. What else is there to like?!
PS random extra : The decor in here is really chill too. Be warned, it's a small place and they do a bunch of stuff in here like live music and whiskey nights, so it's sure to get packed.
I love heading to the Thirsty crow with a small crowd (4-5 people). It gets crowded so come early if you have a large group to get a table. The space is small and intimate and can be loud. I love the drinks...I'm impressed that they crush fresh items or attach fresh leaves to your drink. I ordered the Daisy Buchanan, which is an apt name for a summery drink. Drinks can be expensive ($13, but there's a $15 min for credit cards), but worth it since they are mixed well and large; think of it as your after-dinner dinner.
I love the doormen; they are wonderfully sweet. One pointed out a great burger guy (Takuma's burgers) that just opened up. The burgers were so yummy. I appreciate good recommendations from smiley and friendly ID checkers.
Been here several times. I feel like first impression is usually the best, but after the 4th or 5th time you find that a place is still good... that's consistency...worthy of 5 stars.
I am definitely not a refined booze connoisseur, I know this because I don't appreciate the whole bringing back the old timey drink making phenomenon. And especially the price tag that come along with those itty-bitty drinks!! I understand it's about the ingredients and the care it takes to make them...I get it...I really do. I guess it's just the cheap drink drunk in me that cannot jump on the bandwagon.
I did appreciate the place itself though. It's super cute and so are the bathrooms. The drink was yummy (Vera Von Vinkta) and so glad it was free (yay to dating!)
Two people mentioned this place to me and wanted to take me here for a while since I'm a big whiskey fan. I had higher expectations given that it's a whiskey bar....
Parking is difficult and very limited. You'll be lucky if you can find a nearby street parking. Inside was kinda small, with the bar in the center. Decent music, but the scene was not my kind of thing. We ordered the Old Fashioned and Mint Julep. Both were mediocre... kinda too sweet and didn't stand out too much. There are plenty of better whiskey bars in LA and Pasadena area. In comparison, this one didn't have that funk or sass...
I came here after a few drinks at Red Lion Tavern since the night was not over and my friend and I were still interested in drinking. One of the first things I thought about when walking in was one of Aesop's fables about the crow and the jug of water.
It was a little hard to find this place because my iPhone GPS was making me drive around in scary circles (down some narrow road with all the cars facing the opposite direction I was driving). Anyway, we finally found it and went in for a mint julep and an old fashioned. The drinks are very expensive here. I think those 2 drinks had cost about ~$30. I didn't know what they used exactly but it better be some top shelf stuff. The drinks were strong but that was a bad thing at that point in time because it was almost time to go home.
I wasn't sure what theme this place was going for because the bartenders were dressed up in sleek black and the interior was decorated with antiques, yet the crowd seemed more hipster and they were playing loud dubstep/rock music. It was loud enough that you had to yell at the person standing next to you just to regularly converse.
Because of the high prices and the confusing theme I judge this place with 2 stars.
I would not recommend coming here. The only thing I really liked was the dude selling dirty dogs outside. $4 for a tasty post-alcohol consumption treat.
Another dimly lit bar review for me. And by that I hope you realize that I mean the bar is dimly lit and not my review!
I was over at the Black Hogg restaurant to meet up with friends for dinner on this Tuesday night and, given I don't hang out in this area too often, I wanted to check out a bar I hadn't been to. This is across the street so warranted a look. Now, being an Englishman, a beer drinker and particularly thirsty, this place should have been a shoe-in, however I left before getting a drink...and here's why.
I think, most importantly, the draught beers are expensive. At $8 a pint I'd say this is pricier than many of the places we drink in downtown. Didn't seem to stop the punters though. And this place was definitely rocking at 8ish. Which lead to the second impression, the slowness of service. I don't completely blame the place. We could only see one free seat and that was at the bar, so the staff weren't idle. It did give me quite some time to think about the price though.
So all said and done, the price, no seating for all of us, and how long it might take between drinks to get served, we decided to pass.
Now given all of the above, I will say I liked the atmosphere in here. It's dark and interesting. The crowd were in good spirits (with a couple of girls waltzing between tables). And it looked like a good selection of beers. If youre local and can afford it i think this bar would be fun. Me? I'd think about this place if I wanted to meet up before going to a restaurant in the area.
Parking is street in this area, with meters required til 8pm. Although, check Christina K.'s review as it seems she's found a secret spot!
this is my go to bar that i can walk to. It has an awesome happy hour (bout $5 for well made drinks), along the lines of old fashioned, gin-fizz, ect. They play damn decent music, with a dark and laid back ambiance (hipster vibe as well).
It gets pretty crowded late at night- as a heads up!
If you're the hippest of the hipsters or want to spot the hip not Hollywood scene celebrities while hoovering for a seat and paying $15 for the tiniest drinks in the world WELL LOOK NO FURTHER Â The Thirsty Crow is for you.
Been here a lot, the drinks are fine. I'm not completely blown away by them and I find them kind of tiny. This could just be the alcoholic coming out in me but its super hard to get drunk here.
Seating is also almost impossible later in the night. You just have to creep over other people hoping someone will move eventually.
But hey I think K. Stew's here a lot and dudes in the deepest V-necks ever. Looking for some deep man tuff on the chest? BOOM HERE IT IS!
I really liked this place for the 20 or so minutes that we were here, it was just far too crowded to stick around past one drink. I would love to come back a bit earlier in the night or maybe during the week so that I can sit, have a look at their drink menu (I believe they have a cocktail menu) and really get a feel of the place.
It had a great vibe, the bartender was super nice, and although it was pretty packed no one was rude or shoved or said jerky things - so yay! Also, there is a photo booth which I didn't get to utilize, but absolutely plan on it...next time!!
I like the look of this bar. It's been said before, but it does manage to convey "speakeasy" with its appearance even though it's blasting new music and the two bartenders were dressed like extras from "Flashdance" (decked out in tights, leg warmers, sports bra-like tops, etc). Â
Just let it be known that ordering anything "sour" does not count as a well drink at the Thirsty Crow, as they apparently make their own. I say this to spare you during Happy Hour, where you can have Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey with a mix-in for $5; order it with the mentioned ingredient and get charged $12.
Though a bit on the small side, the drinks themselves were decent in their mixture and presentation. I'm loving the fresh blueberries in place of maraschino cherries.
Thirsty Crow's good for special occasions, but I don't think it'd be a regular haunt for me in the Echo Park/Silver Lake area.
I was shipwrecked in LA
and at Thirsty Crow I did land.
They ignored the lack of shoes
and put a whiskey glass in my hand.
Drinking it down in one gulp
my thirst it did subside.
It tasted so damn good
I nearly laid down and cried.
Ordered me another
that I emptied in one swish.
Thirsty Crow is a watering hole
at which I'll continuously fish.
Old fashion will make a man out of you!
And I will preach this til my death bed... HAPPY HOUR HAPPY HOUR HAPPY HOUR
It's from 5-8 I believe or somewhere around there and definitely worth every bit of it. The bartenders are awesome, the people here are full of late 20s -early 30 somethings all getting a bit of that Thirsty Crow.
There's a photo booth, there's food, there's amazing drinks, and its a dark atmosphere making you want to make a bet with the devil.
Last Friday, my friends and I went on the hunt for something a little different - we were in the mood to go bar hopping but wanted to get as far away from the Hollywood "Scene" as we could. Â Well thank goodness for the Thirsty Crow; it got us right out of our regular bar routine and into something even better.
From the second you walk in, the ambiance sets the tone for the rest of your night - first things first: being in Echo Park / Silverlake you should recognize you just stepped into Hipster central, which is whatever you want to make of it. Â The Thirsty Crow is dimly lit, giving the evening a laidback and relaxed feel. Â There's ample room around the bar to grab your cocktails, or if you're lucky you'll be able to snag a table or two so you can sit down and really take a load off.
I'm a sucker for signature drinks, and the Thirsty Crow is hands down in my top five. Â It's made with whiskey, ginger beer, citrus and some magic, then served in a mason glass; a must drink for anyone going here!
I have to agree w/ Rey. a bar where you can't drink w/ your bartender? what is the LAX Best Western?! I've honestly never heard of that! & I used to work at some pretty trendy corporate bars. Â Came in here the other night & the vibe just wasn't the same. Â
The reason my friends & I loved coming to The Thirsty Crow was to get away from the weirdness of the W & places like that. now it just feels all the same-so cold & corporate. We're in a neighborhood that likes to have a good time people! & enjoying it w/ our awesome bartenders is one of the only reasons this place stands out from the rest. For some reason most of their staff are way cooler than the rest of the silverlake weirdos.
Once you change that vibe that made this place great you might as well consider it dead. Don't know if I'll be coming back here again until it stops feeling like the Glendale Marriott. Might as well go to the 4100 even though I don't like the bartenders as much...I think we can still buy a shot for them there like normal places.
Nothing spectacular and nothing dreadful here, just a-ok. The place is tiny and cute but when it gets packed, there's no room anywhere. I feel bad for the servers who have to constantly say, "excuse me" just to get from point a to b.
They do make some good mixed drinks though and the beer selection is slim.
The drinks were a little pricey, the music was good, the lights were dim, and the crowd was hipsterish.
