When I first moved to LA about almost a year ago now, I asked on Talk Yelp LA if there were any good DIY venues in LA.   All I got  was a brutal verbal smack down. Thank you talk LA! So helpful! :)

I didn't give up though and I managed to find this place. With events ranging anywhere from free to $5, (this is a not for profit place though) a BYOB policy, awesome indie video games, unique art and music, I felt right at home. I love DIY events because they're so personal. It really feels like you're going to a friends party rather then an event, which really puts me at ease, and makes me more open to meeting new people. I've gone into Home Room several times thinking I probably wouldn't need my camera this time, each time kicking myself afterwards. Should I leave all the fun to go back to the car and get my camera? Nah, forget!! I'm behind on posting my photos anyway. =P

This is one of the best DIY venues in LA. Its run very well, even better then some in NYC that have been around for awhile. The website is beautifully done, the events and e-mails sent out well organized. The Home Room Event Series really does feature something for everyone. Because whats better then hanging out at an awesome space (with interesting music & art to look and listen to), then hanging out at an awesome space with a variety of creative things to actually participate in.

I went to their Super Tetricide Closing Reception this past Saturday.  "Last evening of video game arcade fun as we bid farewell to our summer exhibition."  After this there will be some sort of long vacation now. I just hope they come back from it. Without places like Home Room its scary to think what will happen LA's creative heart.

Home Room is yet another fantastic new DIY art gallery/performance space located in the Westlake/Echo Park/Silver Lake area. The intimate and casual nature of the venue along with how proficiently it's run makes for a very comfortable setting for shows (Avi Buffalo, Nostalghia, and So Many Wizards since it's opening in September 2011) and exhibits (Ghost Ghost Teeth, Plush, etc.). We hope Home Room sticks around for awhile as a space to showcase the wide variety of artists Los Angeles has to offer.

    We love Home Room.
