Tinderbox Annex is a stop I make every time I visit Flag. They make handcrafted cocktails and you can actually spot people at the bar in clothing other than birks, hikers and crocs.
The last time we were there the bartender was too busy talking to his friends than pouring us the correct drinks we ordered. That was a bit disappointing, but every other experience I've had included friendly staff. Â They usually have a daily Blue Plate Special that is worth coming in for so I am sure I'll be back.
We came here after dinner for just a drink or two more before heading to our chilly hotel room. It was icy and cold that night! We needed to warm up. He got a beer and I got a mixed drink first, some harvest berry concoction which was berry only in liquor flavor. It was too sweet for me, really. I'm not into sweet drinks. After chatting with the bartender some, he revealed they had a whiskey master last week to introduce and pour whiskey flights. Yay! I want THAT!
He said, no harm, he'd do it. So I picked the bourbon flight and he poured generous shots of three nice bourbons. Two are ones I just love, so that was grand. My man got his favorite whiskey du jour, Campfire made near Park City Utah. We were surprised they had it! Yum.
The staff unprickled as the night went on. It looked like another bartender was off-duty but drinking and hanging there, and some local waitresses or bartenderesses were dropping cookies off and getting tipsy before they went home. Local-feel.
Well priced for top shelf and a nice clean stop off in Flagstaff!
This was by far the best meal I've had in a very long time. We had the chef's tasting menu and it was such a great value and completely knocked my taste buds off in bliss.
Highlights:
Butterfish with mussels over potato puree with a spicy sauce on top.
Venison that MELTED in my mouth. Oh, bambi... you're so delicious.
Desert was a trio that was so good I was sad I hardly had any more room left to indulge.
We'll be back and I can't wait.
While you're there- check out the letter from Paul McCartney near the bathroom. Really cool.
Tinderbox Annex has gone from one of my favorite Flagstaff bars to my absolute favorite Flagstaff bar! For that reason I am upping my review to five stars. Some of the highlights from my first four star review included (that's right, I have review highlights):
"Tinderbox Annex is a cocktail lounge with some great bar food. Â The Annex offers a fun atmosphere with their modern decor, cool bartenders, and good background music."
"Each night they have a different Blue Plate Special for $10. We split a BBQ Bologna Sandwich and a couple of Shandies (light beer spiked with vodka & lemon juice). Â We both enjoyed the sandwich, but felt it would be tastier if it was a little more charred. The fries that came with the sandwich were excellent and seasoned perfectly."
"The Annex burger is pricey at $14, but does include more of those fries and even a 10oz. beer of your choice. The burger is definitely high quality, very tasty and on a great bun."
"Overall, I recommend you check out Tinderbox Annex for the scene, the drinks and the food. The bartender we had both nights was very friendly. I'm sure we'll be returning during happy hour whenever we go to Flagstaff for future visits."
All that is still true, but the place just seems better. We've met more of the bartenders and the owner/manager, Kevin. It was fun talking whiskey, Flagstaff, and trying a sample of that Black Maple Hill! Whenever we make it to Flagstaff, we'll be spending some time at Tinderbox Annex (aka Annex T)!
I was immediately sold on the Annex when I saw the giant blocked 7-foot tall jenga game on the back patio. Â Genius! Add to that a solid tap selection, movies playing on the side of the building, and a spacious outdoor area and you've got a fun little night in store for you and your friends.
Review Source:After dinner down the street we stopped in for just a cocktail at the Annex. It's a comfortable space with a few different seating options/areas. It wasn't busy when we stopped in so we stayed for a while longer than initially planned. I ordered the Detroit Silver Bullet which tasted like candy (gin, lemon juice, cherry juice). The food at both the Kitchen & Annex looked amazing - can't wait to try next time we're in Flag!
Review Source:My mom and I came here because we heard the food came from the same kitchen as the Tinderbox Kitchen, just cheaper prices. We got the Chef's Board with meats, cheeses, and a couple spreads, and when we ran out of bread they brought us more. Then we got the green beans with buttermilk/ bleu cheese dressing and the potato bruschetta, which was super tasty. Their Tinderbox Shandy is really good as well as their cocktails. Our bill was less than $50 so we were pleased !
Review Source:Tinderbox Annex is one of our 'bar stops' when we are out in Flagstaff. Â We recently discovered it a few months ago and enjoy the atmosphere. Â It has great music, bartenders, and ambiance. Â
The first time here, my boyfriend wanted to try the $10 Blue Light Plate, which was a BBQ Bologna Sandwich. I must say, it was pretty good (for a bologna sandwich) :-) Â The fries were crispy and delicious. Â I could have eaten a whole plate of them! Â
I've been here 3 times now and always order the Shandy. It's my favorite! Â It is a light beer with a little vodka and lemon juice. Â Need I say more?? Â
Tinderbox Annex is wonderful to come relax and hang with friends. Â The service is great and the drinks are good! Â They also have specials during the week, so check it out!
Tinderbox annex hangs out right next to Tinderbox! It's a bar/lounge, but they also have a simple but big enough dinner menu. The food costs less than Tinderbox (average plate $12, I would guess). The vibe is modern, but still folksy and outdoorsy. I think they did a good job of creating somewhere hip that is still Flagstaff!
The food itself was good. I started with the brussel sprouts. They were very salty and oily, almost excessively so. Then I had the "Blue Plate," a daily taco plate ($10). It was interesting! The meat was sweet and was offset by a kind of salty, tangy radish and tomato salsa. My boyfriend ordered the Annex burger, which stole the show, and I couldn't stop stealing bites off his plate! It was smothered in Tinderbox steak sauce (basically fancy A1) and bacon flavoring.
Overall this was a good place to unwind after a long day. Annex was relaxed but still hip. I would say it's a good date place, or a place to meet friends!
