It's a shame this place is up for sale because they really do have the best roast beef sandwiches in the area. Â The service isn't always the greatest, and the decor is a bit dated as noted by other reviewers, but I can overlook all of that if I really want a great roast beef sandwich.
Review Source:We stopped by Toners on Memorial day weekend because we wanted to eat outside. Â They only had a small menu available. Â We tried the meatball sandwich, chicken salad, hamburger & pulled pork. Â The service wasn't horrible but it wasn't good either. Â
The burgers are frozen but they are only $5.75. Â The chicken salad was good and my friends said they would have it again. Â The meatball sandwiches and pulled pork were average. I used to frequent toners year ago and I haven't been back in several years. Â The owners are all great guys but the food just doesn't leave me wanting to come back.
They do have an all you can eat crab leg special during the week that has recieved great reviews.
Roast beef sandwich was awesome...especially for the price! Soup of the day was Maryland Crab and it was very good too and only $3.75 for a big crock. Â Another reviewer said it was dirty...I ate in the dining room area as you walk in and it looks pretty clean to me. Waitress was also pleasant and attentive. Would definitely come back when I'm in the area.
Review Source:I stopped in for a late lunch this week as I wanted to try the roast beef sandwich. Â This place really puts the dive in dive bar. Â I sat at said bar and ordered said sandwich with provolone. Â I sipped a cold domestic draft while I waited.
I need to say again that this is a beat up old dive bar. Â It's cluttered, it's not the cleanest, and the bartender tolerated me but I sure as hell didn't get a warm welcome!
My sandwich was up quickly and it was very, very good. Â The meet was flavorful and plentiful. Â The gravy was excellent and not too salty which really turns me off. It's messy and you'll need a napkin or two or five.
I'd stop back in a heartbeat if all I wanted to do was grab a sandwich, quaff a brew and go. I'm certainly not showing up for scintillating conversation and amazing décor!
The beef sandwich was very good, but the place is dirty and the smoking area (for the staff apparently) is right outside the front door. Â Its primarily a bar and I wasn't expecting fine dining, but if character comes from the joints old sticky tables then I'd be afraid to look in the kitchen.
Review Source:It's a cool dive of a joint. You should not expect fancy, but you can expect nice people with good food. It is clearly a local joint where people know each other and are open to new faces. I had the Philly Steak sandwich with all the fixin's and american cheese. (wish I would have went with provalone.) The sandwich was awesome and huge. The Bass Ale was good and cold. The bartender was friendly but not too much and the patrons, well, I felt like I was in a Cheers episode. Next time I am in the area I will likely go back.
Review Source:The first thing that hit me when I walked in the door at Toner's was an overwhelming smell of heating oil. One of the employees proactively explained that they'd just fired up their 80 year old heater and the smell wouldn't last long - they were wrong. I sat at the bar for lunch and thought to myself how this place really is the salt of the earth. The bar was pretty dingy, the stool leather cracked, and they had numerous boxes of produce sitting on the bar and behind it. The bartender was pleasant and attentive, I ordered a diet Coke and the roast beef sandwich. Normally I don't comment on the Coke, but another reviewer said that even her drink was funky - darn if she wasn't right. This diet Coke tasted like they hadn't cleaned the lines since the Nixon administration. The actual sandwich was quite decent. It was full of au jus and they had horseradish at the bar to accompany it. Also, it took a grand total of about 3 minutes for them to serve my meal, so no complaints about speed. The total meal was $5.50 which isn't bad at all, but they REALLY need to update the place. There is a fine line between having character and being hopelessly behind the times. Toner's has long passed that line.
Review Source:Went to Toner's with the family a few months ago for the "all you can eat crab legs" special on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Out of the three flavors (Original, Garlic, and Cajun) my favorite is the garlic. The Cajun is very good too but only in moderation. It could get too spicy for me. The men seemed to like the Cajun flavor the most.
I'd recommend ordering the minimal amount of clusters if you are a slow eater like I am. The flavors (the garlic in particular) tend to clump up at the bottom of the plate as they get cold.
p.s. The wings are also very good.
SImply put- Ew. Service sucked. Tables were dirty . Smelled mildew-y. Food was thrown together. Even the fountain soda tasted old.
I wasn't expecting gourmet by any means, but standard bar fair would even have been nice. No such luck. Wasn't even impressed with this "famous" roast beef sandwich.
I was just all around skeeved out by this place.
I've been looking for a great all you can eat crab legs place for a while now. Â I absolutely LOVE this place. Â First, you have the option of going either on Tuesday or Wednesday. Â For $25 you can AYCE crab clusters with delicious french fries. Â
The best part? Â The crabs come in 3 flavors - original (plain), Cajun (like Old Bay), and Garlic (in a garlicky creamy goodness). Â
My girlfriends like the garlic flavor the best. Â My usual plan is Cajun, then original, then end with garlic. Â One of these days, I will eat 4 plates.
Really great service and very yummy food! Â My boyfriend got the famous roast beef sandwich, and I got a tuna melt. Â Both were DELICIOUS. Â My favorite thing was the Clam Chowder though - yum! Â Our waitress was really sweet and took very good care of us. Â I haven't been in since they have done some renovations but I drive by on my way to work, and it is looking BEAUTIFUL. Â The back patio they added is pretty and welcoming. Â I will be going back veryyyyy soon!
Review Source:Discovering this archetypal roadside tavern this morning as I visited Coffetopia at Wawa across the street, I had high hopes when I returned same day for lunch! Toner's plays down their poisonous-sounding name for prominently displayed 'Beef and Ale' and is basically good, but not remarkable.
Pros
-Since we were in Rome, I ordered the 'famous' roast beef sandwich and got hot sliced beef on a bun. Straightforward and good. Especially with the side of fresh horseradish.
-Quick service
-Affordable
-Roadhouse Vibe - the Wet lunch crowd was getting real comfortable and it wouldn't surprise me if they kept on keeping on until Happy Hour. The bar looks like it could get rockin'.
-Plus they've got Big Buck Hunter.
Quibbles
-Meh
-All available surfaces (from tables to glasses) are covered with local advertising from plumbers and tattoo parlors.
Ever watch one of the travel-related shows on the Food Network (Feasting on Asphalt, $40 a day, Diners, Dives and Drive-Ins, etc.) and wished you could just magically stumble across one of those special little local places that serves up a fantastic specialty? Â That just happened to me at Toner's. Â
I'm traveling for work and staying at a random Holiday Inn (it isn't even that convenient for my meeting tomorrow - just here for the points!) and Toner's is down the street. Â I went by it while trying to find the hotel among the sun glare and was both intrigued and turned off by the name. Â I love both beef AND ale, but the name just seemed unnecessarily straightforward. Â However, since it was so convenient and had three great reviews on Yelp, I decided to give it a shot.
I just got a take-out hot roast beef sandwich with Swiss cheese and horseradish on the side, so I can't really give it a full review including service, etc., but the bartender was nice. Â The inside is dated and a bit on the divey side, but not unpleasantly so. Â
I got back to the room with my sandwich and quickly realized that I needed to grab one of the extra towels from the bathroom to cover my dress pants. Â The meat is sliced paper thin and is very tender, juicy and is bursting with a rich, robust savory flavor. Â It is served on a slightly crusty kaiser roll that does a good job sopping up the juices. Â Spreading a little fresh-ground horseradish on the sandwich and dipping it in the au jus just completes the experience. Â For those who know what I'm talking about, it is kind of like a Chicago-style Italian beef sandwich, but without the peppers and onions and served with horseradish instead.
One of the best hot roast beef sandwiches I've had was here at Toner's Ye Olde. Â It is served hot on a fresh bun with a side dish of au jus and local chips and crunchy dill pickle slice. Â My boyfriend had a turkey hoagie which was HUGE (about 1 ft) Â also served with chips and pickle. Â The gentleman serving us was super nice and when we packed up our leftovers even gave us more chips and pickles for the road. Â I liked the hospitality there. Â It obviously looks like a divey restaurant/bar from the outside and in. Â It's super dark once you step into the restaurant making your eyes take a while to adjust, but the food and service is just so superb and homestyle. Â If you want a casual lunch, watch sports, and eat yummy sandwiches, come to Toner's Ye Olde
Review Source:This place doesn't look like much from the outside, and it looks like even less from the inside. But, how does a tasty roast beef sandwich and a cold bruski sound? Yeah, I thought so.
Honestly, I've never been here when it's dark outside, but that's not important, because I could probably eat 5 of their roast beef sandwiches.
They're not fancy in any way. It's just roast beef. Cheese. Bread. But they are moist and delicious. Moist is good. Come to think of it, that kind of sounds a little dirty.
Moist.
