I liked the view of the 400 Block from the front window. Â First I ordered the pulled pork sandwich because it was advertised in the menu as being one of their top three "favorites". Â They didn't have any prepared so I ordered the Caprese sandwich, the first item on the menu. Â They were out of mozzarella which is a main part of the recipe. Â Next, I ordered a BLT. Â I was surprised the bread wasn't toasted at all. Â There was may 1.5 strips of bacon on it in total which probably isn't a bad idea for someone watching their weight. Â The sandwich came with sweet potato fries. Â When the waitress delivered my food she didn't ask me if I needed anything else before she walked away so I had to flag her down to ask for a sauce for the fries. Â They didn't have any dill so I ordered the ranch. Â The food with a diet coke was $11.
Review Source:Service is excellent, food is ok. I've had lunch twice at Townies and my experience has been pretty much the same both times. I love the decor, the staff are friendly and do a great job, but the food kind of lets you down. I loved the open faced Reuben, it's inventive and has a great taste. The burgers are Meh. For a place that promotes their use of local food and producers, they are using a preformed patty for their burger. Mine was nothing special. For the price similar restaurants will run circles around Townies with the quality of their burgers.
The fries are AWESOME. Twice fried pommes frites. Avoid their waffle fries and get an extra order of french fries on the side. This is how fries should be done.
I am a fan of Malarkeys, and the staff, and owners as people. Â So, that might be a factor.
The last time I was at Malarkeys, the meal I ate was sidways in an unacceptable way. Â I sent it back, and took a pass on a replacement.
Today I went back and ate lunch. Â It was the lobster mac and cheese, and honestly it was brilliant. Â The lobster was nearly perfectly prepared, the pasta was perfectly balanced and not too smooshy, and the cheese was real, and good.
I like the place over all.
Ate lunch here with a friend a few weeks ago. Â I've never been to the bar side of the restaurant, though I have heard it is pretty popular in the area. Â Pretty solid lunch option in the downtown area. Â I had a BLT wrap and iced tea. Â The sandwich options can be served either as a traditional sandwich or on a wrap. Â I liked that the wrap included croutons - unconventional to a BLT, but added a nice crunch to the wrap. Â Fairly decently priced for a decent lunch (pretty generous serving of fries on the side and under $10 for lunch and a drink). Â It's kind of an open space other than a little "balcony" section which made for a little noise, but ok for a casual lunch.
Review Source:Pretty solid place. Service is a bit 'd-baggy hipster' and the decor is somewhat lacking... but the food made it worth it. I've had Reuben sandwiches around the world from New York to Taipei to Krakow and Townie's was by far the best.
WARNING: Townies thankfully serves normal-sized meals.... that means, no super-sized dishes that could feed a family of 23 people. If you want to gorge, go to a chain restaurant or some disgusting buffet. If you want great food at a good price, eat at Townies. Another welcome addition to downtown Wausau.
A cozy place; kind of cool layout & decor.
I was a little bummed out when I learned that the dish with shrimp was sold out.
But then I proceeded to have a very good-excellent meal:
-Bruscetta was very interesting with various sides including hummus; Â attractively served. Â A few more pieces of the bread would have allowed more sampling of the sides.
-Pulled pork sandwich was very good: Â tender & tasty. Â The bun was OK. Â Dipping sauce was very good.
-The side with the pork sandwich was a spicy cole slaw: Â excellent.
-I tried a bite of my wife's fish tacos: Â very good-excellent.
Total cost of a meal for two: Â $39. before tax.
Townie's shares space with Malarkey's Pub. Â We could hear the sounds of people having a good time there. Â We listened to some trivia questions; no live band that night. Â Townie's feels separate: kind of a U shaped layout.
The restaurant is pretty, but who goes to a restaurant to admire the decor?
I was meeting my friend there and yes, I had to wait for my friend, but did I have to wait for my server? Â After I was sat down I sat for 5 minutes and I'm sure it was only when the other server saw me sitting without any server she went to find him and he showed up. Â And he didn't mention his name either.
The appetizers are way too expensive. Â Especially for 2 sausage looking burnt things and 2 burnt balls (Amsterdam Sampler) with barbeque sauce, a smidge of bitter coleslaw and mustard. Â A sampler is at least 3 types of appetizers - this thing should have been called the Amsterdam Burnt Duo. Â The soda/tea is too expensive also. Â $2.50? Â Get your money's worth and order more refills.
My friend ordered the brat with fries and I ordered the Townie with grilled squash and a pickle spear. Â My friend commented that the fries were not that good and the sausage was a beer brat and all you could taste was the beer in the brat. Â The townie is a burger with a fried egg. Â The burger was ok - as in I've had tastier and better burgers. Â The grilled squash was too oily and needed salt. Â The pickle spear did not look fresh. Â It was not cold like a pickle should be.
All in all the food is bland, mediocre and expensive. Â $7.99 for two burnt sausages, balls, $8.99 for burger and oily squash, and $2.50 for a soda. Â WAY too expensive for lunch.
And not mention, there was a pesky fly flying around the whole entire time.
Not going to go back.
The good: The food and atmosphere is top notch! Love that everything is made-from-scratch or sourced locally. I'm a big fan of the Amsterdam Sampler and the Townies Burger. The prices are very reasonable. I mean nothing exceeds $10!
The not-so-good: The staff didn't seem to really know the drink selection/availability when I dined there. (I understand that you're new) The menu design doesn't match the grade of food and decor going on inside.
The amazing food, beautiful interior, and view of the 400 block in downtown Wausau completely outweigh the negatives. Highly recommend trying Townies Grill!
