I recently tried this place with my fiance and another couple. The atmosphere was more than pleasant, and it was packed! We had ordered a bunch of drinks, appetizers & rolls for the table & every thing came out quickly. My favorite rolls are the Covert Avenue Roll & the American Ego Roll. They are awesome! I was a little disappointed in the dessert, but we will most definitely be back for the sushi & drinks! I suggest making a reservation for the weekends. Overall a great, easy, neighborhood spot.
Review Source:Well done!
Nice to have another Asian cuisine option in this area. The weekday lunch specials are good deals, 10 or 11 bucks for a fair portioned bento box. They also have specials that include your choice of 2 or 3 rolls, sashimi, etc.
Need to go back for dinner sometime.
Good atmosphere & service as well.
I'm trying really hard not to compare it to the other place across the street...with that said. Umi is good in its' own way. Food is tasty. Portions are on the smaller side for certain. Waitstaff is fast but their menu is a little tricky. Can be a bit pricier than its' competetor but this place is certainly much "trendier". Food was good and fresh but it's trying a little too hard, for this particular neighborhood. Tasty, but not amazing.
Review Source:It was a bit of a trek from where I am at. But it was a very nice ambiance. It is a cozy place for first dates. My group were placed next to the window front. So it was a bit chilly and it was also snowing that night. I came with my vegetarian friend and I shared a meal with her. So I didn't get to try everything meatty.
Tuna pizza 9/10 (It was spicy tuna on top of some sort of scallion pancake. I wished that it was a bit warmer)
Mango Shrimp Roll - 6/10 (The mango was definitely not in season aka not ripe.)
Tuna Avocado Roll - 7/10 (There were big chunks of tuna and avocado)
Vegetables Udon stir fry noodles - 8/10 (It was delightful and full of mixed vegetables and mushrooms.)
There is angle parking but on weekdays and Saturdays, you have to pay meter parking til 8pm.
I love this sushi spot! I live for their lunch specials.
8.95 will get you two sushi rolls, soup, and and a salad. It's more then enough, and they deliver so If you live/ work in the area that's a bonus! Â
So far I've had the spicy tuna, and Alaska rolls; both divine!! I've also had the yellowtail jalapeño roll, which I could've sworn that they used green pepper and not jalapeños (I'm NOT a fan of green peppers at all), and the shrimp mango roll-  neither roll was anything I'd order again.
The one thing that bothered me a tad bit was the fact that all the yellowfin tuna rolls are $1 more for the lunch special-and it's not listed. This bothered me because for an addition $2 I could get a whole other roll. The lady called me back to tell me that it would be a dollar more, but I wish she had told me I could get a whole extra roll for two bux. Regardless the price is right and so is the food. 4 stars to Umi Asian Fusion!
Last Saturday night my husband and i ate here. Â I asked the waiter for the "Sushi Dinner" which is suppose to be a platter of nine different pieces of sushi. Â I asked him to explain it to me as to what comes on the platter. I do not know if he did not understand English very well but i did not understand what he was explaining, Â Then I proceeded to tell him what type of sushi i wanted. Â When he came back with the food there was a huge platter of sushi. Â I immediately knew something was wrong. I should have brought this to his attention immediately but he disappeared and we starting eating the food. Â When we received the bill it was much higher than we expected. Â I feel that I should have received what I asked for. Â When we brought this to his attention he did not offer a discount or anything. Â Even though the food was very good the whole thing has left a bad taste in our mouths and we will not be returning.
Review Source:OK.....I don't write restaurant reviews. Mostly because I don't have the time, but the real reason is I'm in the restaurant business and I don't like this restaurant blogging craze. I have seen it ruin good restaurants simply because a few people wrote bad reviews for reasons that in many cases were wrong. I have been wanting to try Umi since it opened this past winter. Passing by the place it just looks more upscale that the typical western Nassau County place. Finally was able to go in tonight with a friend who was not excited about it as I was. We both left saying one word, WOW!...The food is fresh, properly seasoned and very creatively presented. We ordered 8 different rolls from the sushi menu. Each one was delicous. The tuna was a deep ruby color and very fresh. If there was a complaint, I would say the spicy tuna roll could have had a bit more kick, but for the average customer it would have been fine. The high light of the evening was a roll with lobster salad, crispy shrimp and blue crab meat with a mango sauce and chive oil. the presentation was only exceeded by the taste. I kept watching as food was brought to tables around us. There were more than a few dishes that I want to go back to try including this fantastic looking ceviche salad . Stewart Manor was never a dining destination but when the word gets out on Umi, it will be.
Review Source:I stopped in for lunch and had a staple three roll lunch special. Â Nothing really special about the sushi, and frankly the place across the street is better sushi in my opinion even though i'm not totally sold on Shintaro either. Â
The fish was of course very fresh though, tuna avocado rolls were stacked with tuna, not shy on the quantity and again, quality was good...but the spicy rolls I got were just ok. Â A bit dry to be honest, and although tasteful, they just did not have, in my opinion the right combination of ingredients. Â
I did not have their fusion menu though so when I do get in there I will update my review appropriately. Â
I wouldn't rush back, but wouldn't shy away either...although if it were up to my i'd probably go to Shintaro next time across the street if I were just looking for sushi. Â
I just caught something about Umi on another review which makes me wonder...how can someone say this place is unassuming?...lol. Â The place has the UGLIEST PURPLE sign i've ever seen!!! Â Sorry Umi, but really not the best color choice in my opinion. Â For anyone looking for it?...its on the east side of Covert with a big ugly purple sign!!!
I went there on Saturday night for date night. We ordered the Perfect Match Roll to share, I had the chicken udon and my boyfriend had the Umi Filet Mignon. The Perfect Match Roll was perfect for us! We love shrimp tempura and the toro was just so fresh. Usually I don't eat a lot of raw fish, but this was good. The black caviar was a nice touch. The chicken udon was light and full of veggies, which is great for me. My boyfriend's Filet Mignon was very tender. He cleaned the plate, which the busboy had mentioned when he took his plate away haha He had even eaten all the asparagus and snap peas!
The first thing I noticed about the place is the decor. It's not generic, like the Japanese restaurants in the city. Everything is modern but warm. You could tell that a lot of thought went into the place. From the water glasses to the wall decor to the chairs, which were very cushiony. The atmosphere is great too, you could tell everyone else was having a good time. I will definitely be coming back here!
I have to give at least a few stars for the food because it's actually pretty good, despite the fact that Asian fusion is such a tired concept, especially for Long Island. Â However, I'm extremely disappointed that when I called to place a small takeout order at 2:55PM, the rude woman on the phone said they were closed since it was 3:00. Â Um, no, it's only 2:55PM and I'm not ordering for 20, I'm ordering for 2. Â Nope. Â She wouldn't budge. Â Come on, you're not going to abide by your own printed hours? Â Furthermore, it might help to be a little more flexible if you're the new kid on the block and you want to draw in the customers. Â I was really rooting for this place, but after this experience, I just can't. Â There are plenty of other great sushi restaurants within driving distance. Â I'll take my business elsewhere.
Review Source:I went to Umi last night with my family and was impressed to say the least. Â Finally, a great sushi restaurant has come to our neighborhood!
From outside, Umi is unassuming and blends in well with the other shops on Covert Ave. Â The decor inside has a decidedly NYC vibe and the restaurant and bar overall feels more upscale than you'd regularly find in this area. Â
In addition to the stylish furnishings, Umi was immaculately clean, the service was very attentive and the employees were knowledgeable about the food. Â The presentation of the food was lovely, from the ice sculptures that the sashimi dinner was served on to the orchids that adorned some of the dinner plates. Â
We tried the Rock & Roll appetizer ($13), which was a stand-out for me, as well as the Tuna Tataki ($11), which was also excellent. Â I am ashamed to say that I did not order my own sashimi, but chose to sample some of my family's raw choices instead. Â I opted for the Pad Thai with Shrimp ($15) for my entree and was not disappointed. Â Everything we tried, from the shumai to the eel rolls, was delicious and tasted extremely fresh. Â I complimented my meal with some hot sake ($8) which was easily enough for two people. Â We somehow managed to save room for dessert which included Mochi (red bean and green tea) and fantastic Tempura Ice Cream (vanilla). Â We had two alcoholic beverages, one soft drink, two miso soups, four appetizers, four entrees and three desserts for $162 including tax. Â I felt like that was reasonable for what we got.
I am usually leary about going to places that just opened, however, I am certainly glad I game Umi a try. Boasting a Japanese fusion menu, and a 15% off grand opening coupon, I came here and ordered a bit of take out. Being a big fan of Sushi, I ordered the dragon roll, rainbow roll and the sashimi deluxe, plus a nice big order of Udon noodles. While I was waiting, I enjoyed an ice cold Kirin Ichiban served by a delightful bartender. Before I get into the food, allow me to describe the decor. A lovely expansive dining area that is cleaved in half by the bar on one side, and the sushi bar on the other. The layout is very peaceful and non rushed, and it is super clean all around! The seats are cushioned and comfortable and there are large, yet not obscene, flat screen televisions near the bar which add a casual element to an otherwise formal bar area.
Review Source:Just returned from a lovely Valentine's Day dinner at this brand-new local restaurant. Â The space is beautifully decorated. Â I was given a rose when I was seated, a very nice touch. Â The service was charming, but a little slow, understandable as this was their first big dining day. Â The presentations were amazing, and the sushi and sashimi were the best I've had outside of Manhattan. Â I will definitely return to Umi!
