Review Source:Second time here. First time was drinks only. This time with the wife and a friend from out of state. Food was meh, service was what you would expect from any well trained decent staff. The fish and chips was exceptionally greasy, and the chips weren't even cooked in the center. They ran out of bangers and mash and my friend had to watch us eat because he wasn't informed until our food was out. Also it was "Sunday Funday" battle of the bad teenage cover bands is not what I would consider fun. I won't be back. So long and thanks for all the fish.
Review Source:Was excited to try a British pub style restaurant in Annapolis area. Sorely disappointed with the food. The FISH AND CHIPS...the standard by which all great pubs are judged was substandard. The flaky, crispy breading on the chips was great until it completely slipped off the entire fish itself :-( major bummer. The chips (french fries) were cut so thick it became a soggy greasy log of potato. No flavor at all and slightly raw on the inside. The Fuji apple slaw accompaniment was an exciting twist but needed salt.
My hubby's KINGSBURY SALAD with salmon came out raw on the inside and was sent back. Upon return from the kitchen we were disappointed to see the same sad piece of salmon doctored up underneath the salamander broiler. Oh well....any way to save a penny at Union Jack I guess. What's up with not cooking a new fillet properly 2nd time around?
Service is slow and parking is limited.
This was one of my first times to Union Jacks and I definitely enjoyed it. Â We came for happy hour and the offerings didn't disappoint: $2 bottles, $5 martinis and margaritas, etc. Â They also had $5/ half pound of steamed shrimp (they were kind of small and not seasoned) and $5 Thai Red Curry Mussels. Â
You might think this is a random offering -- and it is -- but it's also delicious...like lick the bowl delicious. Â We actually ordered more bread just to sop of some of that delicious broth. Â My wife and I then split the New Castle Pizza. Â From the menu:
"Creekstone Farms Angus tri-tip smoked in-house, red bell pepper, cherry pepper, cilantro, red onion and smoked gouda with Newcastle Brown Ale barbecue"
The sauce was very spicy...perhaps too spicy...but luckily the bartender was slinging $5 creamsicle beverages. Â The establishment itself is a little awkward in its size, but I'm not going to hold that against them. Â
No need to rush either, their happy hour goes 'til 9!
Love this place!! As an expat Brit, it's hard to find a good pub, but the food here is great and they have a ton of good beer on tap, plus you can play pool and darts and watch the latest European sports. Even better was our server Nicole, who made the whole experience so enjoyable that we came back two days running. Tim & Holli
Review Source:UJ's is huge. Â It's like a sports bar... kindof... and also kindof like a British Pub. Â They have a full service menu, and most of the seating is tables. Â But there's also a big bar if you like. Â There are huge TVs all over the place too, maybe people like to watch them? Â I don't know, I don't get it. Â I don't go to a bar to watch TV, but maybe that's something that people do.
So really though, who wants to go eat English food? Â For a region known for it's poor culinary creativity, I understand why the menu changes gears like a bicycle. Â One second I saw nachos, the next it was fish and chips, then pizza, then BAM more British stuff. Â English artwork hung on the walls like sports memorabilia? Â Check. Â It was fun how weird this place was.
Good for large groups or events? Â Absolutely.
Date night? Â Not so much.
Beer selection: pretty good actually, impressed
Pretzels: "adequate" (like the horsepower of a Rolls Royce... look it up)
So confused. Â But good service, even for a large group, and everyone seemed satisfied with their orders. A-OK by this guy!
My husband and I wanted to check this place out because it was new to Annapolis, and we wanted something different. Â Neither of us were all that pleased.
I ordered a small caeser salad and a vegetable club sandwich. Â My husband had an appetizer that had bread and cheese dip (which was pretty good), and bangers and mash. Â My caeser salad was ok, but kind of bland. Â My vegetable club was missing the avocado (the whole reason I ordered it!). Â I mentioned this to our server, and she was very helpful and went back to the kitchen to get some avocado for me. Â The club was not that impressive. Â I know it is just a veggie sandwich, but there was a tiny amount of cream cheese, and the vegetables were cut in such an odd way that it made the sandwich very messy and difficult to eat. Â The fries were very good though.
We got dessert, which was not impressive as well. Â Husband got creme brulee, which he felt was pretty watery and lacked flavor. Â I ordered a funnel cake. Â I am not sure that is what I got. Â It had all the ingredients listed, but it was more of a big roll of fried dough. Â I am pretty sure that funnel cake is to be lacey and flat...not shaped like a calzone! Â It was very tough and bitter tasting. Â I had to use all my strength to cut the thing!
There also are way too many tv's, and very few parking spaces. Â We had to park at Whole Foods, and dodge traffic just to come over!
We really wanted to like this place, but unfortunately, we will not be returning.
Our group of 30 ate brunch today. Our server, Jess, singlehandedly took care of the entire group and did an excellent job. She did individual checks and kept everything straight. Everyone had good things to say about the food and there was plenty of it. My grilled fish sandwich was excellent. Very enjoyable outing for our group of Mini Cooper enthusiasts.
Review Source:I called about reservations and yes we do take reservations, for groups of 8 or more but not for two dining out and no "call ahead" seating.
Parking is at the best, bad. There is an unpaved lot across Summerville road, a Parking Garage across Summerville road and the lot beneath Whole Foods. Parking was difficult even at 5:50 PM.
We were greeted and immediately seated in the "lounge" area, nice step up both for 6 (remember - only two of us). No small booths to be had. There are TVs everywhere all showing sports. No darts (what happened to the English Pub atmosphere?).
I must say the service was first rate. Our server was "Billy" and he did a phenomenal job! We had drinks on the table under 5 minutes after sitting down. We had a starter of Spinach Artichoke dip - like everywhere else except the dips. It was served with sour cream and a salsa that really made the dip pop.
I first had the Buiness Beef Vegetable Stew. It was served in a bowl large enough for a dinner. The rue was sweet and the beef very tender. The carrots were over cooked, no crispness at all. Overall it was very good but not great (vegs overcooked). My wife had a side house salad. Standard. Nothing special.
I had Bangers and mash (Sausage - ground pork and bread crumbs from what Billy described) served with mashed red skinned potatoes. The Bangers are very tasty and even better when served with some Coleman's Mustard. The mashed potatoes were very creamy and tasted great! Pam had a rack of ribs. No skimping on the food, it was truly a FULL rack of ribs. The sauce was very tasty and a bit on the spicy side.
I had a Strongbow (tap) followed by coffee and Pam had Kendall Jackson Chardonnay. Billy was an expert at keeping our water and drinks refreshed.
The place is one open space and tends to get very noisy. We had some difficulty speaking to each other.
Price range is about $40 -$45 / person for a shared appetizer, soup or salad and entree and one drink. Add a decent tip for service $100 - $110.
We liked the food, the service was great. IT IS LOUD and the parking isn't great especially if you have to park in the unpaved road across the street. They do have valet parking.
All in all, we'll be back. It won't be one of our "regular" places in Annapolis but we did enjoy ourselves.
Wouldn't go back. Â Huge open space was very loud on their first Friday night. Â Some interesting beers on the list, but they were out of a few. Â Appetizer (spinach dip?) was inedible. Â Folks at the next table left theirs, also. Â Server was friendly, but I did have to ask three times for a glass of water along with the beer.
Review Source:Don't be misled - there is nothing remotely British or pub-like about Union Jack's British Pub in Annapolis. It is a loud, cavernous sports bar lined with flat-screen TVs. We found it very difficult to carry on a conversation over the din.
There is a good selection of beers. The food was OK, but overpriced. The service was friendly, but slow and very uneven. We had planned to stay for dinner but bailed after a few appetizers. I doubt we'll go back.
After hearing so much about the other locations this was a much anticipated opening! Â I love a decent pub with a good beer list and we thought this would be our new "go to" place. Â We were so wrong! Â We went for the Super Bowl "sneak peak" and was mildly disappointed in the service and food. Â It was crowded and a first day, so we waited a few weeks for them to iron out the kinks and tried again.
Today we arrived at 12:15 with a group of 7 and were seated right away.  It was not as crowded as we expected for a new restaurant and there were many open tables.  We were seated in the draft of the doorway and asked to move.  We were move right away, but still were cold.  I guess the nature of the restaurant.  We ordered the souffléd doughnuts that sounds amazing and we just wanted to snack on something while we waited for our food.  45 minutes later our waitress came to check on us and we ordered another round of drinks and asked about the doughnuts.  She came back with our drinks and apologized the food was delayed because the kitchen was having issues with the doughnuts, but if we still wanted them we could have them when they worked out the issue.  We still wanted to try them so agreed we would like them whenever they were ready.
We attempted to have one of the 25 televisions that was tuned to golf, soccer, and ESPN news changed to watch FOX and the qualifying run for Daytona and the waitress came back to say "the manager said we don't have that". Â So, we are watching golf, ESPNNEWS, and soccer repeated over and over on the 25 screens.
We finally asked for a manager since we still had no food after an hour. Â Patrick, who we had to ask his name since he did not introduce himself on arrival to our table was disheveled in a wrinkled shirt and mussed hair asked "What's up?". Â There was no "how can I help you, is there a problem I can help with..." Â Just a confrontational stance and "we just opened" as his excuse for everything. Â I told him our food service thus far was awful, it was our second visit, and we see no improvement. Â We questioned why no ability to watch qualifying and he responded "We don't allow that in Columbia". Â Umm, we are in Annapolis? Â "Well there are no races allowed in Columbia, so we don't allow it here". Â He offered no customer service recovery of any kind and I asked him where did he manage before as I did not really believe him to be the manager! Â He told our table "I was a supervisor". Â His Customer Service skills are non-existent and he is best back in his role of "supervisor" whereever that may have been because he needs to not be out with customers! Â His "Oh well" attitude was not appreciated and he left us with no promise to check on our food, no apology.
At 2:15, that is 2 hours after our arrival, we left and walked to the next restaurant (the Cadillac Ranch) where we were seated, served, ate, and were on our way home in an hour.
We dine out regularly at the Annapolis Town Center and we will not be back to attempt again. Â These first 2 attempts were awful.
I don't hand single stars out freely check my profile but Union Jack's earned this one. Granted, I know they have been open near a week, and understanding it might be a little bumpy; We were less than prepared for this food crash and burn.
The decor is nice and fresh, we sat at a 4 top near the stage. Firstly, we sat in the COLD dining room a good 15 minutes until we were greeted. Another 5 minutes and we placed the entire order, drinks an appetizer the curry and a salt beef Rueben. Our server while nice, had just been given another 3 tables all sitting and ordering at the same time.
Another 5 minutes and we got our drinks, an IPA and a ice tea that so anemically brewed that I thought it was ice water. Another 20 minutes passed and the Welsh Rarebit with pretzels was AWOL. We asked for a manager and explained that we now had been there 45 minutes and really wanted to eat. The manager was very nice and offering to take care of our check, we had rather just had some food. A few minutes later the rarebit and pretzels arrived. While it all looked very nice, it stopped there. The "pretzels" seemed to be twisted doughnut dough and the rarebit cheese tasted like canned Nacho cheese without the chills. The Rarebit had no taste of cheddar or beer.
It would seem that our lunch was ready and waiting so we asked to have it brought out rather than spend anymore time under the heat lamp in kitchen purgatory.
We had asked for the English chips with the Ruben but apparently they had run out. Our Ruben's side was shoestring fries. Not  bad sandwich. The Curry dish was essentially a bowl of rice lightly topped with chick peas and concrete hard diced butternut squash. Zero flavor, dry, I picked at a few of the less hard veg but really couldn't eat it. Not sure where the menu'd Mango Chutney was.
As it was clear we would probably not making this our new go-to weekend place, we ordered the rarely seen(this side of the "pond") Banoffi pie. Another 10 minutes transpired and well, it was not worth the waiting. Overly sweet cream, like icing was drowned with a cheap chocolate syrup. Scraping off the topping we did find a nice, toffee and banana below.
Even giving leeway for a very new establishment, I can't imagine when, if, they get the service part down, there still little reason to return. The curry was listed as a house special. Even if it had been cooked, it would only be edible but far from delicious.
PS They only have about a dozen parking spots, we parked at Whole Foods and walked but after our lunch I don't think parking will be a problem.
Stopped by for a bite on Saturday afternoon.  Good mussels and fish and chips.  Also kudos for Belhaven beer!  Will be back !!  The pub is newly opened.  It's a big space two bars, pool & darts room and  even a  sizable sound stage..  this will be very welcome addition to Annapolis scene.
Review Source:My wife and I decided to try this place out for the Super Bowl opening night! Great atmosphere for sporting and social events. They only served a "preview" menu and the food was delicious. Huge beer menu loaded with tons of choices and reasonable prices. Service was top notch. I was happy to see that on Mondays is trivia night with 1/2 off burgers. Gotta come back and try it out!
P.S. Be careful of the mustard sauce that comes with the pretzels, it will burn some nose hairs and clear your throat.
Hopped over for the preview the night of the Super Bowl and the both Union Jacks and the Ravens did not disappoint.
The food was really very good. Between two of us we tried a burger, wings, pretzel (watch out for the mustard--wow) and a rustic grilled chicken. Â All outstanding.
Service was good considering the first day and the Super Bowl. Our waiter was awesome, the only complaint, and it is not his fault is that the burger came out without garnishes, but another waiter took care of it right away. They noticed my long coat was being stepped on and offered to check it. Â Thumbs up.
Beer--a great selection of beers. The drafts that we had could have been a bit colder, but other than that no complaints. They probably ought to look to some sort of special or out in a loss-leader. $4/pint for Miller Light draft seems a bit high as does $4 for a Bud Light bottle. Â Maybe they can get a few $3 or $3.50 beers in there.
The entertainment is as expected in a pub--2 dart boards and 4 pool tables (I think they are free); but what really shines is the video and audio. There is a large stage so bands will love the place. There were many times in the game I caught myself looking around to see if it was the bar crowd cheering behind me or the surround sound--it was the latter. Â
It is sort of a part of the Annapolis Towne Center. Parking kinda sucks as the lot is very small and limited. I parked across the street in the vacant lot (that I am sure will be developed), but you can park under Whole Foods in the garage and walk over which is a very convenient thing (unless it is raining hard and then it sucks, so you might as well go back in and get another beer)
They will be opening at 4pm on 2/8 for the official grand opening after tweaking a few things for the sneak peek Super Bowl event.
All in all, despite the checkered past of the location (Jillians, Sharkeys, WIld Willies) this place is a winner. A bit (not much) more expensive than some other casual places, but all in all worth it!
