Fun arcade games. Â Decent food, drinks and music. But that doesn't change the fact that this place seriously needs to hire better staff. Â One of the bartenders who is a younger white gentlemen needs to learn the lesson that it is not okay to racially profile customers. Plain and simple. Â Definitely wont be going back. Â What a shame, the other bartenders and bouncers where very polite and friendly; it is NEVER okay to call a customer a terrorist!
Review Source:This was my first visit to The Union, but it only took one racist remark from the bartender to make it my last.
Let me elaborate on my experience so you can see how this all unfolded, and how The Union left a rather poor taste in my mouth, which wasn't the alcohol.
My girlfriend and I visited The Union, on a Saturday night (7/20/13), we were greeted by two male bouncers which were actually quite nice and complemented both of us on our attire. Upon entering The Union, to my surprise, I saw all the retro gaming from my youth, which made me turn my inner child on and want to play all the games! For the atmosphere (music i like playing in the background) and entertainment (all the arcade games and basketball hoops in the back!), this was a 5/5 in my book!
My girlfriend purchased a living social voucher which we went to redeem at the bar. The first bartender, an African american male, which was a really cool nice guy helped us first. We ordered a salad, loaded tater tots, and two long island iced teas. He asked to hold onto my ID with the voucher and then he would ring us up later. He used a paper clip to hold my ID to the voucher and kept it by the cash register.
After finishing our food (which was actually pretty good), we went back up to the bar to get one last drink out of the voucher. We got our same bartender from earlier and ordered a drink which he then went off to the side to make for us. As we were waiting, two Caucasian male bartenders then came to the bar to make drinks as they were beginning to get busy.
One of the Caucasian males notices my ID by the cash register. At this time, he doesn't know that I am standing right there waiting for the other guy to finish our drinks. The Caucasian male bartender grabs my ID and then speaks with the other Caucasian male bartender as says something along the lines of "looks like a TERRORIST" and then they both laugh and put my ID down. What the hell? Right? Unprofessional.
Infuriated, I take a minute to process what just transpired. I then yell "Excuse me sir, can you come here for a minute," to the bartender that made the remark. At this time I believe he thinks I'm trying to order a drink as he doesn't know I heard. I then stated, "If you don't mind, the TERRORIST would like his ID card back, thanks!"
The bartender, laughs, "Hey man, you took that seriously?"
I respond, "You serious? Why would I not take that seriously? You just racially profiled me and called me a terrorist, a pure racist remark based on my skin color and last name."
The bartender replies, "I was just joking, you can call me whatever you want and I wont take it seriously." Still somewhat chuckling.
I respond, "I am a customer that has to come into your establishment, you don't see me calling you derogatory terms or anything of the such. You making fun of me due to the color of my skin and my last name, and using racist remarks is just unprofessional. I could get you fired if I talk to your boss."
After I mention I could get him fired, the bartender changes he demeanor, he is more serious now, and then replies, "Hey man, I'm sorry. I'm sincerely sorry, do you accept my apology?"
I shrug it off, having already had a drink, and not wanting to get into trouble myself, I tell him to not do it again as there are people that would react differently than I would (if he will hold his word, I doubt it). The rest of the night was ruined as I was in a bad mood the rest of the evening. We left shortly afterwards.
Being called a terrorist just because I am brown skinned by an employee of this establishment is just pure unprofessional, and therefore I will not be coming back, even though up to that point, it was a pretty cool place.
I can't tell you, the reader reading this review, to go here or not, that is ultimately up to you to decide. I can only explain to you my experience, what i went through, and how I ended up feeling. In the end, you must decide if you want to go here and spend your hard earned money. My girlfriend and I will not be coming back here as I do not want to pay money to be called a racial slur.
Or maybe being called a terrorist is just what I am to expect in this day and age. Regardless, thank you for reading and best of luck. This was also my first Yelp review, so sorry if I went off on a rant.
(Above I labeled the bartenders as "African-American" or "Caucasian", this is not an attempt at being racist, but more I do not want to get the good bartender that was nice to us in trouble for nothing he didn't do, since I did not get either of their names. That is all.)
Twice this place has refused service to two of my friends because of the "rules." First of all, the don't accept foreign ID's. Second, they will not let you in if you are wearing a certain color. They said he was wearing too much red, but let the white guy in behind us wearing a solid red shirt as well. This place discriminates!
Review Source:This was a pretty fun place located in "old Roseville." Â At first glance it looks like a typical bar. Â Once inside and walking around you find booths with TVs to hang out in and eat and drink at. Â The place is very open and spread out so while you do have the personal space of your on TV (or TVs), you can still mingle around. Â
My friends and I went here to watch game 7 of the NBA playoffs and eat and drink some. Â We had to order from the bar then the food and drinks were brought to us. Â I have to say the food here is VERY good! Â The pizza was thin, yet crispy, albeit a bit greasy (good or bad depending on your linking). Â We also had the chicken wings which were super bomb and the pulled pork nachos... bomb bomb booom! Â For kind of a normal/busy evening, you'd think there would be more service, but we had to wait for the bartender a few times just to get more water or put in another order. Â By waiting, I mean she wasn't even behind the bar (where she was...?) Â Either way we got to order and we got our food, which was excellent, so all is good! Â
The area is kind of sketchy as I kept seeing homeless wanderers pass by the window. Â Also I think they could upgrade their sound system. Â With all those nice TVs, it kind of sucked to have to hear everything from one ceiling mounted speakers pointed in our section. Â Other than that I would definitely come back here to watch sporting events and have some good bar food!
My husband and I come here for UFC fights. Â They have many TV's so it's not hard to find a spot where you can see the TV easily. Â We usually get there a little early on fight nights because the place gets packed and we don't want to stand. Â Be prepared for strangers to ask to sit at your table if you do not take up all the seats - not my favorite thing, but I understand why.
They usually have good specials on fight nights, especially on beer. Â They have some tasty bar food as well. Â Their margherita pizza is great and HUGE. Â I also like their tator tot appetizer, so good, not at all what I was expecting. Â
This is a good bar to go to especially for UFC fights. Â I also appreciate that they have some old school arcade games to play as well. Â This is definitely one of our go to bars when we go out in Roseville.
Hands down the best bar in Old Roseville. Â I've been there probably 20 times (mostly when it was Basic), and almost always on a Saturday night.
This place seems to change ownership every other month, but it is definitely doing well in early 2013. Â The Union doesn't get busy until around 11pm or later, so if you go too early you might be bored. Â The ratio of men to women is very close. Everybody looks amazing. Â There is very little to no ghetto/douchebags/trash especially compared to the club and bars around the corner.
I enjoy going here for just about any reason, The staff is friendly and fun to be around. The food is great and they offer some not so standard specials which makes me like it even more. The prices are fantastic! Happy hour deals, Wing Wednesdays and UFC fight nights always have great deals for groups of people.
This became our favourite place for UFC Night.
I've been to this bar over ten times, enjoyed plenty of drink specials and events, but here I am leaving a bad review.
Friday night, I was denied entry to the building because the bouncer picked that exact moment to have a power trip. I don't remember his name, but he was short and fat like bouncers tend to be. Anyway, the man looks at my license , looks at me, and tells me that MY ID DOESN'T HAVE MY OWN DAMN PICTURE ON IT. He tells me in his 'expertise' that I'm not the person on my ID. I pulled out my old student ID, my bank card, and my Kaiser card, all which have a photo of me and/or my birthdate, and he still wouldn't let me in.
I've spent hundreds of dollars here, and after that embarassing ordeal, I'm not likely to ever return. I can't speak for my friends that were with me, but I'd imagine that they were feeling just as put off.
Now, for a practical review:
Outside of the very terrible bouncers they use, the place is alright. Most times I go, there are more guys than girls, which is fine if you're there for a beer, but if you want to dance or be a little more active, there's a better choice around the corner.
The bathrooms are filthy (most bars are), the drinks are very fair in terms of pricing, and the music is generally decent on a normal night. There are arcade games in the bar as well as a giant Jenga set (which makes for a fun drinking game), so there are things to do if the vibe doesn't feel right. But don't play video games while you're at a bar.
All in all, make better choices as far as who you hire for bouncers and I'll be happy to revisit this review.
This is one my favorite bars in Roseville. They throw many events and even host free UFC fights. Their bartenders know how to make good drinks and there is always something on special and it is NEVER well vodka, rum, etc. They have really fun booths that you can reserve. We came here on New Years just after they opened and were able to get a booth with 2 TVs and a PS3 so the guys in our group could play video games while us girls got down on the dance floor. Thier bottle service was priced just right and they even had discounts for adding additional bottles, which we did! The DJ plays some old school songs but he does great mixes and had everyone dancing. There are also a few fun arcade games, skee ball and giant Jenga around the bar. Last but not least, their food is good too. They serve everything from apps to wings and brick oven pizza.
Review Source:Only been here once for happy hour but the pizza and beer were amazing! We got a free pizza coupon and WOW. So good! It was quiet but we weren't looking for the club action. They have a cool set up with old school games. We left amd went to another bar and noticed when we walked back by they changed the theme to clubbing. The bartender while we were there was awesome but noticed he clocked out at the end of happy hour. He told us for regular happy hour you can get a personal pizza and a pint for 5 bucks!!!! What????Heading back soon.....like tomorrow to check that out!
Review Source:I went into this place not sure what to expect - or expecting a potentially hostile "bros-ville" environment... Not the Case! Â I got a friendly welcome, the service was top notch, and the food and drinks were really great. Â
And there were bros everywhere.
But you know what... they weren't bad.  Not a single Affliction shirt.  No bullshit attitudes.  Just a fun crowd and people hanging out with friends. These are some upscale, Arcade Game playing, Doritos Mac and Cheese Eating, Whiskey drinking, Sports Watching, Beer Pong Playing, College Girl flirting, Cool Ass Dudes... and I'd be proud to call any one of 'em "bro" (if we were at that level.)
They have a  happy hour burger and fries that,  for the value, was the best damn $3  worth of Burger I had ever had. (yep - 3 bucks)  And the rumors are true - that Doritos Mac and Cheese is pretty alright. Â
As I was leaving I realized they were firing up BeerPong Night (Tuesday, I think...?)  SO... if these guys are chill and welcoming on a night that includes what is practically a BROlympic Event, I say they're cool any day of the week.
Side-note,  I've made it sound like its nothing but dudes in this place.  Not true, plenty of cute girls (especially for a tuesday).  The female bartender was really friendly, and is pretty cute... even though the owners were giving her a pretty hard time I'm sure she'll pull it together.
See you at The Union..... Â {whispers}.....bro... ;)
Cool spot.
Have been here for drink only. Â Haven't tried the food yet. Â
During the week it's pretty chill but on weekends it can get busy.
So depending on the scene/crowd you are looking for decide by what I stated above.
The drink aren't as cheap as some of the other places in the area.
This is a good place to catch a UFC fight!
I don't usually write reviews, but the food at The Union was definitely worth writing home about. I had the pleasure of eating at the Union today; the buffalo chicken sandwich was awesome not only was the chicken cooked to a perfection, but the bun was by far the best I ever tasted. Â I also had the opportunity to try their Mac and Cheese; the proportion, taste, and price exceeded my expectations. Â
I will definitely return with the hubby!
Quality Food, Great Service, Fun Atmosphere!
Stopped in on a pub crawl recently and left about as quick as I got there. This place needs to decide if they want to be a an arcade, a restaurant or a nightclub? Their identity was as confused as I was. Was the slowest of all the bars in Roseville the night my friends and I went out. Save your money on some of the funner spots like Troc, Onyx and Roseroom.
Review Source:This new business in the old Basic building has given old town a breath of fresh air. It's different from all the other bars with vintage arcade games cool graffiti artwork and good food. I hade the pulled pork nachos and wow amazing. Good beer selection and very affordable. I will be back.
Review Source:Donkey Kong and Dorrito's Mac and cheese? Â Say no more because I'm in. I was out in old Roseville when I stumbled upon this little gem that isn't quite like anything I've ever seen before. The Union is a touch of a smaller scale Dave and Busters with a hipper atmosphere and a lot more night life potential. With an expansive and open layout, two bars, two skee ball machines, two basketball games, a handful of arcade games, good music, TVs throughout and a unique and exciting menu, there just isn't anything not to like about this place.
I found myself very intrigued with menu options. Though I did not try it, I will definitely be back for a crack at the homemade four cheese sauce Dorrito Mac and cheese. I did give the loaded tator tots (drowning in homemade four cheese sauce, bacon, sour cream and jalapeños) shot and it was one of the more items I've had in awhile.
This place really has me excited and I am definitely looking forward to coming back.
