They opened at noon on Sunday and we were one of the first people there. Â My first thought walking in the door was, 'what is that smell?!?' Â It smelled a little musty or like and old person house or a damp basement or a combination of the three. Â It didn't take long for me to not notice it once were were in the dining room. Â
I would classify this place as a dive bar. Â The cleanliness and upkeep is a little lacking. Â Not that the tables were dirty but that the carpet needed to be replaced, the tables and chairs have seen better days and they needed to do a deep cleaning badly; ceilings, walls, touch up on the paint, you get the picture.
Our waitress was great and very attentive. Â She did a real smart up-sell on me from a small stuffed sandwich to a half stuffed sandwich (same thing basically) with a salad and the beverage I already ordered. Â I went with the veggie stuffed sandwich; mushrooms, onions, green peppers, black AND green olives, tomatoes, and cheese all baked inside a pizza-like dough and then glazed with garlic butter. Â It was super good, but I would have preferred a little less butter. Â That thing was so buttered up it could have slipped right out of my hands onto the floor. Â I ended up wrapping the bottom end in a napkin which helped soak up the unnecessary butter excess and kept me from burn my fingers on it's toasty hotness.
The hubby had a pizza, all to himself, but I didn't have room to try any of it. Â It did smell really good tho. Â He enjoyed it but said it was a little greasy.
If you can get beyond the atmosphere or lack thereof, the food was pretty okay.
They have really good service. Pizza is so so. I find myself eating more of the appetizer than the pizza. The place is a little run down and could definitely use a deep cleaning. Which is dissapointing because it's so close to home. In the mean time i will eat at another pizza place. Uncleanliness is a major turn off!
Review Source:We ate at Val's while visiting Indiana Dunes. They were the only pizza place we could find open on the 4th of July. It was absolutely the worst pizza ever. It was barely a step up from frozen pizza. The crust was dry, hard, and flavorless. We tried some brownie bites, which turned out to be frozen brownies that they put in the deep frier. The deep frying thing was a turn off, plus the brownies were flavorless. Fortunately, I 'm not a local so I won't ever have the opportunity to go back--thank God!!
Review Source:When living in Indiana, this place was often visited by me. Â I constantly craved the Italian beef with cheese and some cheese garlic bread. Â Both absolutely fantastic. Â The beef is always moist, and the cheese is a definite compliment to the large sandwich. Â Priced just right as well. Â I've been living in Arizona for 3 years, and have yet to find a decent Italian beef stand that compares to the Val's Italian beef. Â Soooo good.
Review Source:First of all - normally the food is pretty good, not going to lie about that. Â However, I can't help but to have a dislike for this dirty place. Â I know the workers there, I have known the previous workers there, I've had really close friends work there, I know a lot about this place and the kitchen. Â Don't get me wrong, it isn't horribly dirty to where they should be shut down, it's far more clean than a street vendor in Mexico City... it's still just sub-par. Â The pasta salad seems to be quite famous, and it is pretty good. Â The grinders are good, the Bomb is really good, and their pizza is fine. Â The inside is just really cheap and kinda dirty. Â With as many pizza places around I would only go to Vals for their unique pizzas, stromboli, cheesebread, and pasta salad.
Review Source:Chesterton has a lot of pizza places to choose from... Val's Pizza used to be one of my favorites, not so much for the pizza (though Hubs LOVES their Ranch Romano pizza). Â What I always likes was the calzones. Â Yummy! Â But the last time I went I had to stand at the pickup window a long time... long enough to really notice what was going on in the kitchen. Â I worked in restaurants when I was younger, and at all of them, Â the kitchen and kitchen floor were cleaned thoroughly every night. Â That clearly doesn't happen at Val's anymore. I'm not talking about a day or two of grime -- it clearly hadn't been cleaned in days or weeks, and there were boxes of stuff stored on the floor. Â Icky.
