Val's is a little surprising for being such a nice place in such a small town, but then again, I think Canton's population increases by a factor of ten once a month with the First Monday Trade Days -- apparently the largest flea market in the known universe -- so that is bound to help support good eateries. This was our first visit to Canton so Val's is the first place we have eaten. More to come...

The sausage and sauteed peppers over spaghetti was very tasty, probably because most of the oil in which the peppers were sauteed stayed with the final product -- something which some people might not appreciate, but personally, I liked it.

My wife had a dish of chicken and artichoke hearts in an Alfredo sauce over fettuccine -- we both forgot the name of the dish -- but her comment was that it was very buttery, and otherwise a fairly typical Alfredo preparation.

Would have gone 4 stars here but there were a few problems: our waiter wasn't very welcoming or engaging -- did his job okay but really seemed more interested in the episode of The Mentalist that was running silently on the TV, than in his customers. Then when I walked up to the cash register to pay a $24.76 bill with two $20 bills, the hostess opened her cash drawer and there was nothing but twenties and ones in it ... so I had to stuff 15 one-dollar bills in my wallet.

The food was good but overall the experience wasn't great -- we were reminded of so many restaurants in towns where tourism is the main industry, and many people in service occupations couldn't care less from one tourist to another. That said, we would go back for the food.

If you're going to Val's, be advised the front door of the place faces the town square. Our GPS took us one block east, where we parked, walked up to the "Val's" sign over what we thought was the front door, then read a sign that instructed us to walk all the way around the block to enter the restaurant.

Outstanding food. The chicken parm sandwich and bread were wonderful. My son had the fettuccine Alfredo and loved it. Will go again.

Great little restaurant on the Square in Canton.

Their Parms are delicious - and their dipping sauce for that awesome bread is worth the extra charge.

Best and nicest restaurant in Canton, Texas.  Food is exceptional and the prices are very reasonable.  Portions are large and they are not stingy with the free bread.  I usually order something other than pizza but the pizza is very good as well.  The house dressing is one of my favorites but don't order if you are afraid of a spicy kick.  One word of advice:  Avoid during Canton Trades Day weekend unless you are in town for that event.  I always avoid the whole area during first Monday.  Usually if Val is there Frank Sinatra is playing throughout the restaurant.  After living in the Dallas and Houston metro areas I am thankful that there is at least one place around here where we can get some great Italian cuisine.

Probably the best Italian food we have had in several years. Spinach in the calzone was fresh and the chicken parmesan also was fantastic,

I don't do very many 5 stars but this one qualifies in my opinion.  I travel all over the U.S. and I have had a lot of experiences in every kind of restaurant and coffee shop so I think you might possibly agree.  Mostly because it's in a town out in the middle of nowhere.  What a jewel.

We went to Trade Days (400 acre flea market for those out of staters like me) and found this place for dinner afterward around 6pm.  We had 6 guests with a variety of dishes to comment on.  Comments in order of experience.  We ordered spagetti, chicken parmesan,  shrimp linguini with cream sauce, and another shrimp/pasta dish, chicken picata, dinner salads. It rivals Carrabas, Olive Garden, Macaroni Grill but much cheaper.

    The good

    1.  Bread was free and very good.  Somewhat like a french/focaccia hybrid.  The "house" oil (olive oil, garlic, herbs) was very good.  Lots of garlic taste so beware if you are shy of garlic.  Otherwise they will offer you complementary oil and balsamic.

    2.   The marinara sauce was excellent with some spice kick to it.  Chicken parmesan was top notch, tender, and moist.  Shrimp were not overcooked and rubbery.

    3.  Waitresses were very nice and attentive despite the crowd building on a Friday night.  It was packed by the time we were done with 10 people waiting to sit.

    4.  Desert case looked nice with a variety but we did not have any. (See #5)

    5.  Portions were great and 3 out of 6 of us took home leftovers.

    6.  Price was very reasonable and quality was great.  Spaghetti and chicken parmesan was $18 total.

    The not so good.

    1.  Dinner salads were very average and nothing to note.

    2.  The volume grew to an uncomfortable level to be sitting there very long.  I have an app that is a decibel meter and for those who know what I'm referring to it was 86 as we left.

    Will absolutely go back.
