I've known about the Friday night fish fry for a long time- since the early 90's or so. For some reason I just never wanted to devote my Friday night dinner to the local VFW, but rather go somewhere a little more "happening". Â But then I saw the New Lenox VFW on Chicago's Best where they went back in the kitchen and showed how everything was freshly made. Â All the fish and chicken are battered on site and fried. Â So we decided to check this place out last night.
First, don't be turned away by the crowded parking lot- there are tons of tables to sit at and this place is huge inside. When you get in, just pick out a table and have a seat and someone will come take your order. The tea and coffee are free, and there is a bar you can go up to and pay for any other drinks. The only real waiter service would be when they take your order and deliver it to the table with the bill.
So I had to get the fish dinner, since that is what was shown on Chicago's Best. I would have to say it was pretty damn good! Nice crispy breading too. The dinner comes with three pieces of fried cod, tartar sauce, fries, bread, and cole slaw. I recommend asking for extra tartar sauce. Â They also have chicen (pieces or tenders) and a few other items on the menu.
When you are done with your meal, you leave your garbage at the table and head over to the register by the door. It appears that this place only accepts cash. It was just a register on a fold out table set up for Friday nights. Â
All in all, its a great meal for the money and a nice alternative to going out and spending $70 on pricey drinks and dinner somewhere else. There are a lot of families and some older people, so it might be rude to sit at the table and sling out profanity with every other word.
