BYOB is the only consistent thing about this restaurant. They are hit miss with many entrees. Service is also slow. Have had three meals here. Last two were  average to poor. Had a pasta marinara that had overcooked langostinos. What was left of them was tasteless. The marinara sauce was also bland. The manager was defensive when informed and never offered an alternative or even an apology. She merely told me that the langostinos were tricky to cook and that no one else complained. Rather than make a scene I just wrote Via Ponte off for the future.
Review Source:I couldn't agree with the last review more. Â It is a gem. Â Service, food, atmosphere - everything. Â We have had steak, lamb, pasta, chicken Marsala, salad, dessert (almond cake!) - and the best bread ever in a restaurant. Â
When you look around at the other diners you realize that everyone is happy and having a great time. Â What better way to judge the overall experience? Â
There are so many restaurants in the area that are good - but in all categories this is among the best.
A small restaurant located in an old in Stockton that offers wood burning pizza, fresh pasta and good desserts. It is BYO which is great as Philips Wines are just a block away. My favorite is the Pasta con Sarde, a traditional Neopolitan dish complete with fresh sardines raisins and pine nuts. The salads are generous, and well dressed, and they often have specials. Â The pizza are very nice though they lack the char and the bite that I am looking for in a wood burning oven pizza. Their anchovy pizza is worth trying. During nice weather they have seats outdoors as well as indoors. Reservations are a must on weekends, otherwise you can easily plan to walk in.
Review Source:Another one of our favorite local spots to get fire roasted PIZZA .... honestly the best around and nothing compares. Many varieties to pick from or create your own. Â You can sit at the counter and watch Kate work her "pizza magic" but only 4 or 5 seats available for that fun show. Â We have shared this little local spot with many of our out of town guests and never received a complaint...it is so quaint and so "homey"!! Â Kate, the owner, always makes it like we are coming to her personal dining room for dinner. Be sure to call ahead on their busy nights Friday and Saturday for reservations because they are always filled to the brim but somehow Kate always makes room for us. Â Fresh fish delivered daily with the head still on is another favorite, prepared to perfection. During nice weather you can also sit outside to dine and enjoy the marvels of small town living. Â BYOB and enjoy. You will not be disappointed...Sharon and Michael
Review Source:Started with the Insalate di Finocchio.  Fennel was cut in very thick slices and was therefore tough and chewy  One lonely lemon wedge was served with the salad and appeared to have been sitting out for days, as it was shriveled.
The meal went downhill from there. Â Ordered the Pollo con Funghi. Â It was served swimming in grease, was tasteless and quite simply inedible. Â My concerns were met at first with apathy, and later belligerence. Â Ended up paying for a rather expensive entree which is now in their waste bin.
So disgusted by this experience, that I will never go back. Too many other wonderful restaurants in the area to choose from. Â
I find it hard to believe other rave reviews. Â My experience was horrendous on all accounts.
Disappointing. We live reasonably close to this restaurant. So we were hoping that it would be a good and convenient place to go. My wife ordered a salad that was drowning in olive oil. I ordered broccoli rabe. It was supposed to have a spiral pasta (to capture all the delicious favors of the sauce). It was not spiral pasta and there was very little sauce.
The kitchen is slow. So be prepared for a wait. Even the salads were slow to come out.
Quality olive oil and sea salt. Â Lasagna is bland, but the mezzeluna pasta in a cream sauce is really delicious. Â Our waiter was great. Â I've heard that the owner is a d*ck. Â Overall, I've just heard a whole lot of mixed things about this place from the food to the service. Â My own opinion is mixed as well. Â I appreciate what they're trying to do here, but I think they might need to bring the prices down a little.
A huge plus for them is having Phillip's next door. Â Plenty of parking in the back lot behind Phillip's. Â Enjoy the outdoor seating on a quiet weeknight when the weather is nice.
The food is very good, but the draw for me is the location and ambience. Â My two recommendations for the restaurant would be to include a salad w/ the entree, ($20 for a pasta entree) and put grated cheese on the table - or at least when requested. Â Other than that, I would definitely recommend.
Review Source:We are local but for some reason had never tried Via Ponte. Wow - it was really delicious. Flavors of real Italy. I had the Fusilli Sarde with anchovies, sardines and raisins - sounds weird, right? Omg, I'm still thinking about it was so good and unusual. The mezza Luna was also memorably good. The only drawback was the obnoxiously loud table of overbearing people we were seated next to - about 10 of the loudest people we have ever heard. We couldn't hear ourselves think. Really put a damper on an exceptional meal.
Review Source:Very delicious! A friend and I ate at Via Ponte last night for New Year's Eve, and I felt compelled to write a review because we were both so satisfied.
For appetizers, my friend got the calimari and I the stuffed mushrooms. Calimari was a little overcooked and quite chewy, but breaded perfectly and the accompanying tomato dipping sauce was tangy and delicious. Mushrooms were good, and were filled with a breadcrumb and lobster mixture. There are 3 to an order which I thought was a little skimpy, but I was only able to finish two and took the last one home. Out of everything, I would probably skip the apps next time and just stick with an entree and dessert.
Entrees: Friend got the Mezza Luna, an absolutely delicious half ravioli-like pasta that came with mushrooms and prosciutto in a gorgonzola sauce. If you don't like gorgonzola, you'll want to skip this dish because it's quite powerful in it. I got the cannelloni, which also was fantastic. Very light, filled with seasoned ricotta and that same tangy tomato sauce as I mentioned in the appetizer...I only brought some home so another family member could try it. Otherwise I would have finished it all....and licked the plate!
Dessert: My friend got the pistachio gelato (quite a generous scoop of it, too; she was unable to finish it), and I got a tirimiasu-like dessert that, instead of espresso, had an amaretto liqueur soaked into the cake. PHENOMENAL! Even though I was stuffed, I ate every last bite and wish I had a piece with me as I'm writing this. I'm still thinking about it! The gelato was also very tasty, with a nice hint of nuttiness to it, but was not overpowering, either.
We felt pricing was very reasonable...for two appetizers, two entrees and two desserts (we brought our own wine), it came to approximately 80 dollars (before tip). Anything you find around Stockton is quite pricey, so compared to other restaurants in the area, for what we received, the ambiance and atmosphere, we were quite satisfied. (One minor thing to mention is that we were seated near the pizza oven, and therefore quite toasty since we had dressed according to the weather outside).
The staff was outstanding, too. Our waiter, Masimo, was attentive, friendly, engaged in small talk even though it was packed, and made sure our meal was perfect. Other staff members were incredibly friendly as well; many of the patrons were "older adults", and as a couple of 20-somethings, it was wonderful to hear staffers wishing us a "Happy New Year" as we were leaving, and telling us how they loved hearing us laughing, joking, talking, etc. All in all, I will absolutely be visiting Via Ponte again and can't well to tell others about it, too.
i used to pass via ponte on my commute so when i was craving italian food the other night, i immediately called for a last-minute reservation and was certainly not disappointed.
first of all, the ambiance is casual and relaxed, with windows overlooking the main street in stockton. it is the perfect place to go for a romantic dinner or a night out with friends or family.
now, onto the food! we started out splitting the potato and green bean salad (you can double the portion of any of their salads to split as an appetizer, but the half portion was more than enough for us!)
for my main course i ordered the 'melenzane parmigiana' which is their take on eggplant parmigiana. the main difference between this dish and usual eggplant parmigiana dishes is that it isn't breaded. i found my meal to be refreshingly light and the lack of breading allowed the flavors of the eggplant to really 'pop.' i could taste that all the ingredients were super fresh and overall, the dish was superb. i will warn that if you're looking to satisfy a craving for traditional eggplant parmigiana, heaped in sauce, breadcrumbs and cheese, this probably isn't the dish for you.
finally, for dessert, i ordered the white cake with coconut cream frosting...and, let's just say, that sucker was gone in about five seconds and worth every last calorie!
finally,i do want to mention the service, which i felt was less than stellar. we asked for things (bread, grated cheese & pepper) and never received them, or waited much too long for them. thankfully, it didn't ruin the experience, but it frustrated us at times throughout the meal and is worth mentioning.
I agree. The olive oil was quite tasty - the slightly salty warm and crispy bread, a perfect accompaniment.
I've never eaten Sicilian, but I understand the cuisine is known for the fish and tomatoes - but not the way we eat tomatoes with our "regular" Italian food. It's not slathered - it's an accent. And it's good.
For an appetizer we had the mozz salad with peppers and eggplant and the fennel salad. Fennel - Â light and refreshing coupled with a variety of olives for salt and fresh grape tomatoes for a punch of sweet; I barely shared because its deliciousness made me selfish. Â Mozz - Â I wish the eggplant were cut into small medallions for easier access and less mess; and cooked a little longer, for less pull. But the fresh mozzarella highlighted the dish - I only wish it came with more. Again, the fresh olives provide a nice salty balance. Â
The pasta intermezzo was properly prepared in salty water, which flavored the noodles perfectly. The sauce had not a hint of sugar (awesome), but was straightforward fresh and tangy with a base of paste holding together each bite.
My partner had the sardine pasta because she loves sardines. This dish was a bit tricky. The pasta was more like cavatelli than fusilli (as listed on the menu), but it tasted divine (and fresh). The sardine part was weird, though. We expected pieces or chunks of sardine to accompany the nuts and raisins et. al., but instead it was more like a thick spread acting like a sauce. She liked the dish, but the sardine "spread" overwhelmed her -- just not her preference, but recognizably a well prepared dish.
The waitstaff was authentic, accommodating, never overbearing and genuinely friendly. (I ordered the whole fish of the day (D'Orata), and although it was a weekend wherein they ordinarily do not have the time, our server took a few extra moments to de-bone the fish for me with a huge smile and skillful craft). Thank you!
Oh - and the fish  - wow!!
Once the fish is released from his or her skin, you get to pour a mix of olive oil, garlic and citrus sauce all over the flesh for a tingle on the palate and tickle on your buds. Â So smooth, you don't even have to chew. Â Good.
Last bit. Whether you're full or not - east the dessert. And be certain it includes the gelato and almond cake, if you can.
What a cute place that is focused on quality and service. Â My family and I felt very welcome at this Sicilian eatery and the olive oil was impressive. Â My wife is an olive oil lover and teared a piece of the warm bread and dipped it into the olive oil and then.... she did a double take and her eyes widened and said, "This is good extra virgin olive oil!" She ordered the Margherita pizza which was very good and reminded me of our time in Sicily. Â
I ordered a beef and duck stew dish which was rustic sicilian and slightly oily. Â The pasta that came before the meal had a vibrant tomato sauce that the family enjoyed.
Did I mention that the staff was friendly? Â This is a great romantic place that allows you to BYOB/W and I highly recommend bringing a bottle of wine. Â
If my kids had cooperated I would have enjoyed trying the dessert....maybe next time. Â
Price was a little high for the stew and the pizza was priced at $10 and the other pizza at $14 for a 10" pie.
Outstanding authentic fresh Sicilian cuisine. Â Chef Giuseppe is a schooled Italian chef, creating wonderful dishes with seafood, meat and pasta. Â This is the real deal and nothing is prepared quickly or carelessly.
This is an amazingly friendly, efficient  place, with year round steady quality & service and the same great food always.
It is a BYOB,next to the amazing Phillip's Wine Shop.
We ate here a couple years ago & really liked it. Been trying to get back but they were always closed (for lunch) so we FINALLY made it back! I think maybe I was expecting better? The atmosphere was pleasant (outside dining), the service was not attentive (except for grated cheese girl) & the food was ok. I wanted to try the pizza but opted for Pasta. The Pasta tasted like it was missing something & the pizza (that I saw driving by our table) just  looked ok. The desserts however were very tasty. I'd go back for dessert. I also liked the CAT who strolled by the table. Shadow was friendly.
Review Source:Brick oven pizza. As good as it gets. Incredibly delicate and crispy crust, fresh ingredients, delicious homemade sauce and well-seasoned, gooey mozzarella cheese. I could eat pizza here every day of the week.
The service is charming and friendly and accomodating.. Don't miss out on the Mussels appetizer: tender mussels in a flavorful, aromatic broth - perfect for dipping the crispy semolina bread. Another outstanding dish - the Linguini w/ Clam Sauce. Just what you want that dish to be - fresh, lots of little clams, pasta cooked al dente, great leftover broth for more dipping....
This is a nice, quaint place to bring the family, or a loved one, or saunter up by yourself to the trattoria bar and order a pie. You will be very happy. BYOB.
