Thanks, yelpers! I checked out this awesome bookstore a couple Friday's ago with my 5 year old daughter. As a way-east-sider, it's tough (impossible?) to obtain a fix of  hip-cerebral-ness. Visible Voice has books (cerebral) and friendly, unique people (hip) PLUS Beer and Wine and LIVE MUSIC. What a perfectly awesome combination. I highly recommend you pay this establishment a visit!
Review Source:Little independent bookstores certainly face a daunting challenge in this day of the ebook. Â They need to do things right. Â Visible Voice does things right. Â They stock unusual, quirky and interesting books that larger retailers often do not and that may or may not be in digital format. Â
I often will try to give local bookstores the benefit of my business by taking, say, my amazon wish list in and seeing what I can buy at a place. Â In terms of success-to-size-of-store ration, Visible Voice has beaten every other bookstore in my journey. Â That they stock a number of the small books from the British Film Institute certainly helps, but even in other categories, Visible Voice clearly has taken the time to make up for in quality what they cannot have in quantity.
They are friendly about it, too. Â Although I am openly politically conservative, and Visible Voice pretty clearly has a vibe that runs the other way, I have never been treated disrespectfully there. Â For conservatives, often used to a side helping of condescension with their purchase (I have stopped purchases mid card swipe on such grounds), this is a significant plus.
A great addition to Tremont and to Cleveland.
Visible Voice is one of my favorite businesses in Cleveland. The bookshop is quaint and relaxed; the book selection is just amazing. It's definitely the kind of bookstore that makes you want to quit your job and spend your paltry savings on books about urban farming, gender studies, and every book written about, in, or around cleveland ever. yes, it is good.
some of the people who work there: not-so-good. like, in particular, one guy. he seems nice enough, but also pretty stoned most of the time and is just not helpful. i ordered a book through him for a christmas gift. after waiting 2 weeks to receive a phone call that it had come in, i went there myself. he had never ordered it! oh well. the next time i saw him, i picked up the book that i had re-ordered and we had the exact same conversation that we had when i ordered it for the first time! hell-OOO.
still, VV is the best.
I think this store has been around for about the same number of years I've lived in Cleveland, maybe 1-2 more. Over these past half-dozen years or so, the store has evolved and changed. It added a patio, it started serving wine, it has maintained the same curatorial focus, though the balance between new and used books has been in flux (just a description, not any kind of criticism). They've also become a strong west-side example of what people call the "third place" - a place outside of home and work that people can turn to for both commercial and community sustenance. Many places, notably cafes, try to do this kind of thing, but owner Dave and his staff have succeeded. I've been to several different readings over the years here and have noticed a growth in young, hip, literary types populating the events, helping to create a writers community and scene that is ever-more edgy and educated. At the same time, art walk Fridays provide a home to a cooperative of independent artists and just about every intriguing cultural event I see in town has them involved in some direct or sponsorship kind of way.
In a nutshell, they've created a perfect kind of business: active in the community and excellent in their product. Kudos.
I can't send enough accolades for Visible Voice. This bookshop is probably my favorite in the entire country. (Yes, my affinity goes beyond my love of City Lights in sf and Elliot Bay in Seattle).
Visible Voice isn't about quantity, it's about quality. It's about independent book stores with friendly, knowledgable staff. It's about forward-thinking authors and space to sit and take in a chapter. I think it's about a slice of Clevo in Tremont, too.
Every time I'm home, I find my way to Visible Voice. Each time I walk out with a new book I can't wait to dive into.
One of the many reasons I loved living in Tremont. One of the reasons (though they may may not be as plentiful as the reasons keeping me in SF) why I contemplate the journey back home for good.
An abundance of excellent books (the kind literate people read and not say Nicholas Sparks or Nora Roberts) It, to me is quite inviting and cozy. It has a laid-back elegance in a non-pretentious way that is overall quite appealing. I enjoyed great conversation with the friendly staff and I also liked the fact that there is a meeting room (I attended a poetry workshop and was quite pleased by this). I wish I had gone to this place sooner and I prefer it's warm order to Mac's Backs Books rather cramped (albeit an adventure of literary discovery) chaos.
Review Source:Love books and a good glass of vino? Even if it's just one or the other, be sure to stop in.
Wish I could say I'm an avid reader (although, my husband is, if that counts) but I particularly enjoy their Wine Tastings and was just there for one this past Friday evening. Fantastic wine for a great value (only $10 to sample 5 varieties), personable service, inviting atmosphere, and importantly, an eclectic book selection - I couldn't resist purchasing a book about the musician, Cat Power, for myself and found an interesting autobiography for my better half.
Once the weather warms up, you can definitely find me on their lovely patio sipping some wine. . .and perhaps flipping through the pages of a new book  ;)
I am a new Visible Voice lover!
The reasons for only 3 stars:
It's a bit far from my place, so I don't/can't go often.
I'm a Mac's Backs addict, and that's within walking distance if I decide to go during the 3 months of walking weather we get.
But, don't be scared by my 3 stars. This place is fabulous! There's a great selection of books and I couldn't keep my hands off of dozens of them...until I remembered the status of my bank account. Heh. Books and beer.
Also, they have coffee and wine here, which is fantastic when you just want to lounge/relax and look at/read books!
I really like Visible Voice Books. Â They are the very definition of an independent bookstore. Â Great array of books and print for any reader to enjoy. Â The staff is really helpful in finding and suggesting books.
The serve coffee and wine to sip on while you dig through their store for the next book to bury your nose into.
I wish I could visit them more often and support them with my business.
This bookstore has such a cool vibe. Â I guess that should be expected from a place that's a wine bar, Â bookstore, and music venue. Â The book selection is limited, but it's a small independent bookstore. Â And the sections they do have are decently extensive (this coming from a librarian, so I mean it). Â But the best part (for a nerdy like me anyway) is the ability to drink some wine while being nestled among books. Â They have this really squishy comfy ottoman that I sat on while drinking wine and talking about books with my fellow road tripper. Â
Oh! Â And when we saw we were there during happy hour, we asked if that even applied on weekends since it was a Saturday. Â The girl looked at the clock, looked at the sign, and was like, "yeah, sure, today can be happy hour". Â That's the attitude I like to hear!
I need to go back to Visible Voice and just browse. Last time I went in there, I was sort of in a hurry and was looking for something somewhat specific (a theme-based children's book for a classroom lesson plan). I had to just get in and get out. But here's what I gathered from that brief visit:
-very warm, cozy interior with lots of "nooks." I think if you're a bookstore, you're striving for nooks. Or at least it's a bonus.
-rumors about patios/coffee/wine/performance, but again, I didn't come for that purpose and didn't scope it out too much. But that is enough of a draw to return.
-I got what I was "looking for." And I didn't browse through many other sections, but the children's section was diverse and interesting. I saw lots of cool, progressive books there.
The only reason they lose a star is because the people working there seemed really pretentious. This is sorta the place where the staff isn't really there to serve you, but rather, entertain themselves while occasionally helping someone. They reluctantly stop their conversation to assist. If I'm nervous to check out, that's bad news. (However, I do realize that it could have just been who was there that day. I'll have to return to see what's up.)
A gem.
A great selection of all kinds of books on the hipster, progressive cultural spectrum. Â Not a lot of current titles -- several of the books up front on most prominent display were a few years old -- but still a wonderful bookshop experience. Could use a better LGBT selection though.
Decent prices too. Â The hardcover copy of "The Way We Eat" by Peter Singer that I bought was about $5 off the cover price. Â Not bad. Â
The interior is cozy and very welcoming, with some comfy chairs and a couch. Â And wine with your browsing? Yes please.
An oasis of a bookstore in Tremont. Â Have a glass of wine while browsing books or chill out on the garden patio. Â Yeah you know what? They might not have the biggest selection of books in the world but if you can't find something of interest here you probably can't read. Â
They are an amazing little mom and pop bookstore with new and used wonderfulness. Â They also have some great indie and hard to find magazines. Â Make sure to check the upcoming events for bands on the patio and local Author book signings.
This crazy awesome guy I was dating took me to Visible Voice Books a couple of weeks ago. Â I was overwhelmed by the awesome selection of reads. Â There was even a stellar local selection. Â While I was there the owner received a comment from another patron...she said "this is such a cute place." Â He responded "I was going for cool, but cute works too." Â Well I say "this place is wickedly fantastic." Â There is a great selection contemporary and classic works. Â They also offer a free meeting space. Â I could only hope to return there someday. Maybe if I click my heels and say "there's"s no place like Visible Voice Books, there's no place like Visible Voice Books..." you get the drift.
Review Source:What a great place. While it certainly isn't your salt-of-the-earth big-box type of store, Visible Voice ALWAYS has what I'm looking for (and a bunch of stuff that I wasn't looking for but loved anyway). The mixture is 90 percent new stuff, 10 percent used. They even have a patio and wine bar on the side of the building. I like that so I can mask my slow descent into alcoholism with profundity.
Review Source:Visible Voice Books is a great indie bookstore in Tremont. It's located in an old home, so the space is small, but it more than makes up for its size with its book selection. There are two rooms, the front room has the register, a small selection of books, and a few tables for the wine bar. The rest of the tables for the wine bar are on the patio. The back room is where most of the books are. The sections are pretty clearly marked, so you should be able to find what you're looking for pretty easily. Keep in mind though that the selection is small, so don't expect to find everything you're looking for. The selection of books is really high quality however. Overall, if you're looking for a great bookstore in Cleveland, head over to Tremont and stop in at Visible Voice Books.
Review Source:Asking an old pal from Cleveland to describe Visible Voice before we decided to check it out, I got something close to this: Â "Pretty much everything about everything I'm interested in, plus a bunch of other great stuff, all crammed into a little bookstore. Â Great place." Â That's probably butchering the actual quote (in fact, I know it is), but the general idea was spot on: Visible Voice would probably be anathema to the contents of my wallet if I lived anywhere within ten miles of the store.
Tucked back onto a little residential street in Tremont, Visible Voice features a huge variety of good options to choose from in a wide range of genres, topics, and the like. Â Their music and art-related sections are wonderful, and any place that prominently features a wide selection of quality graphic novels is fine in my book. Â Although I did get a bit of the hipster vibe from the place as far as what it featured and how it was put together, I didn't receive any of the normal elitism that tends to accompany that. Â The folks working there was friendly, helpful, and took the time to direct us to Sokolowski's (right up the street - go eat there and come back to VV afterwards to read and let the ol' stomachs settle). Â Comfortable seating and a general feeling of being able to just chill and read through whatever you'd like to before you buy it. Â Also, they offer a great selection of unique cards, post-it notes, and other fun stuff.
Clean, accessible, friendly staff, great selection. Â I really love this store.
