I'd love to try this place, but until this bar realizes that their beer list is seriously lacking, I'll not attend. Â Put some respectable drafts in, and I'm there...and no, Stella Artois is NOT a good beer simply because it's from Europe. Â Stella is the Euro equivalent of Miller/Coors/Bud...
Review Source:On Memorial Day, I stopped in here after craving oysters. I was hesitant because of some of the reviews I had read, but decided I would give it a go.
We were the first to arrive when the restaurant opened, so we didn't have to wait for a table. Our server quickly took our order and made some recommendations. The food turned out to be really good and they had some decent drink choices.
I had the Reuben with a twist: mahi mahi instead of corned beef, raw oysters, and fried clams. All of it was very good with the exception of the clams; they were a little too crispy and lacked flavor.
All in all, the server was very nice and astute. I would come back next time I have another craving for seafood.
I really wish I had the opportunity to write a review on the actual quality of the food at Whale but unfortunately waiting an hour and fifteen minutes for my food wasn't enough. My brother and I visited whale just this past weekend on a quiet Sunday afternoon. We kindly placed our orders and waited......and waited.......and waited only to ask the waitress what was going on. She didn't even have the courtesy to follow up on our order or the issue when we made her aware of it so we had no choice but to leave. I would have preferred an honest response letting us know that she forgot to put our order in but our time as customers must not have appeared valuable enough. I think this review sums up that I will never return. I hope everyone had LOTS of time to wait for their food here.
Review Source:This was my first visit and I was very impressed with both the quality of food and the service. My friend and I were there on a Monday at 1pm and we had no problem getting a table. We were indecisive on what to order and our waitress was patient with us and gave us time to peruse the menu without making us feel rushed.
We decided on the smoked fish dip to start and it was very good. My friend ordered the beef dip and when she asked for a side of aioli sauce (apparently they used to make it but have since discontinued), the waitress was proactive in offering three other side dipping sauces for her to try instead. I ordered the Lobster roll and let me tell you, this was so delicious. The toasted bun and the large chunks of lobster were scrumptious. So were the homemade chips and side of honey mustard sauce. I couldn't eat both rolls, so I ended up taking a doggie bag home. I was happy to have the leftovers and was happy all over again with each bite.
The food is good here.
The service not so much.
Every time I come here, I end up waiting at least 15-20 minutes for my food.
I first came with friends and thought maybe they weren't serving us first come because of our age. The another time when I came with my family, I experienced the same thing.
On top of that most of the staff are older waitresses that seem to have been tainted by the business. They snap at everything and seem really impatient. I felt super rushed along, like they were dying to go on a cigarette break. I only make that assumption because I could hear them in the back and I have worked in restaurants with older waitresses before.
Other times I've walked in and stood at the door for a while and just left because no one seated me when the bartender clearly saw me.
I was kind of surprised especially because the prices are outrageous especially because Bru's Room is walking distance and serves almost the same exact food. I probably won't be come back here unless I see the staff changes.
Finding an appropriate star was really hard as I am incredibly conflicted about this place. I had a groupon for two lobster dinners and called Monday for Tuesday reservations. I was a bit worried that they would run out of lobsters and voiced my concern - to be told it was no problem because I had made a reservation. She said I could come at 8 or 9 - given what she said I took the later time. Famous last words.
We drove 35 minutes to get there, only to be told that 1) they didn't have any reservation for me, and 2) they were completely out of lobster.
I had been looking forward to this all day - was really mad and disappointed. Was offered any other entree up to $20 or to come back another night for lobster. Thought about walking out but decided to stay b/c already there. Seriously am not driving another hour another night. But it was very frustrating and really the hostess and the server (who was very nice and friendly) didn't seem to give a damn.
The food and server are the only thing giving it [even] one star. The spicy crab dip was good even though I found a shell in it. The special fish with crust was ok - very rich and heavy. My steak was presented weird - it was thin and kind of bent over the mashed potatoes and broccoli so you couldn't see them till you moved it. It tasted good though. Better than the fish. Margaritas also good and served with lots of lime.
I stewed at the table for a long time - it totally ruined the whole thing, mood etc. Not fun. Thanks Whale. Didn't help to see lobsters being brought out for another table about 25 minutes after we sat down. Didn't think it worth fighting about at that point. I mean, was I going to grab them or listen to [more] excuses?
Besides the obvious move of having a few extra lobsters - I think someone should have made more of an attempt to find out WHY my reservation got lost and compensate me at least $20 to cover gas and time to return. They did comp the appetizer at the end but it was a very bitter meal and experience. Too bad, because if it weren't for this, I really might have come back.
This place is in a strip mall on 441 that got hit hard with the recession. Â I've heard mixed reviews about this place so decided to try it for lunch.
Inside...it looks renovated and appeard to be clean. Â We got there at around noon and the place was empty. Â We were greeted and drink orders taken. Â One odd item...was the 'fishy' smell. Â I've been to many seafood restaurants...and it's usually not a good sign when you smell 'fish'.
I ordered the Blackened Dolphin Sandwich with Whale Fries...friend ordered a Buffalo Shrimp Wrap with Whale Fries. Â I was a bit dissapointed that there wasn't a larger selection of fish to try and only had the option for Dolphin.
It took quite a while for our food to come out. Â Way longer than it should have. Â The Whale Fries are basically 'home-made' chips. Â They were hard and cold. Â I took a bite of my Dolphin and ick! Â It was the 'fishiest' fish I've have eaten in a very long time. Â I couldn't even take a 2nd bite. Â The shrimp wrap was 'ok' so we switched our plates (Jeff is a lover of Tuna in a can....and all that fishy taste). Â The Buffalo Shrimp was passable..but not really something I'd come back for.
Our server didn't bother to come back until we had finished. Â Overall...skip this place.
They actually try to trick you into thinking it's part of the Whale's Rib in Deerfield Beach (that one was on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives). Â Go there instead.
I wanted to take advantage of the lobster dinner for two at a new place I had never been to so my family and I headed down to the Whale. However, the waiter we got obviously could care less about us, he was aloof and rude. He didn't deserve a tip on the full amount. We will never go back, very disappointing experience. Â One positive is the hostess was really nice and went out of her way, even gave us a $10 gift card for the next visit, too bad it will never get used.
Review Source:How does this place only have 3 stars!? This place is phenomenal!! I'll start by saying that I don't eat any of the raw oysters, however, other than that each dish I've had is amazing. I first went on Thursday (luckily). As I remember being told, they receive their conch on Thursday and sell all different conch dishes. I've also had the lobster roll, fried shrimp, and my wife has had the buffalo shrimp wrap. All of these dishes have been awesome! The best part about it is the home made whale fries. The food is great, the service is better.
I'm baffled that this place only has an overall rating of 3 stars yet the garbage pan-asian sushi buffet a few stores down has 5 stars, how is that possible?
Anyhow. Great food and great service. You can't go wrong.
Four of us took advantage of the recent Travelzoo deal for two lobster dinners and a bottle of wine per couple on a Sunday evening. Â When I called ahead to make a reservation, I was told that we could come in anytime if we wanted to order off of the regular menu, but that we would have to reserve a few days in advance if we were coming in for the lobster. Â This turned out to be strange because A. they always have the 1 1/2 lb lobster on their dinner menu and B. because while they had enough lobsters for all of us, they actually ran out of the Lobster Rolls which two of us would have preferred.
I actually had a really hard time choosing a star rating for The Whale Bar. Â On the one had, the lobster, garlic mash side and whale chips were all delicious. Â Everyone enjoyed their meal and our server was very friendly. Â However, the service was painfully slow and the server kept forgetting to bring things we asked for. Â They had also run out of those lobster rolls by 7:00pm. Â I think if I lived closer to Parkland, I would return as many items on the regular menu sounded delicious. Â However, if I'm not already in the area then I'm not sure if the half hour trip is worth it.
Started with the smoked fish appy. It happened to be very good served w/ crackers. I had the fish and chip w/ coleslaw . The fish and chips was lite and made w/ real cod. The chips we're there own special kind there known for and came w/ mustard sauce. The coleslaw was crisp and somewhat creamy. I ordered ice tea it came in a massive cup! As I looked around at everyone's  meals from wraps to fish dinners you can't go wrong w/ The Whale Raw Bar!!!!
Review Source:To say I was disappointed is a massive understatement. Â I had heard good reviews so I thought we were in for a great time. Â Well we got there around 8pm on a Wednesday. Â We were going to have some appetizers and drinks but at 9:30 we were told that the kitchen was closing. Â So between the just ok appetizers, the just ok service, the slightly overpriced food, Â and the child's bedtime closing hours, I was extremely disappointed. Â The menu selection was nothing to write home about either. Â The only really good thing I ate was the fish dip. Definitely don't have plans to eat there again.
Review Source:We came here for lunch on a Sunday and the place was moderately full.
If you are looking for seafood - this is the place to come. Â Unfortunately they only serve their special "choose your poison" after 4:30 pm. Its where you can pick a certain kind of fish, cooked a certain way and served with sides. That would have worked great for me, but I guess not for today .
We started with the spicy tuna lettuce wraps, which were extremely tasty and not too spicy. Â The peanut sauce it comes with is delicious and not peanuty at all. It complements and tuna perfectly. ($10.95 for 4 wraps)
Their salad selection is a bit sad as they only have salads with iceberg lettuce or romain lettuce. Â I ordered the veggie salad which came with sliced tomatoes and avocado and you can add chicken, shrimp or dolphin for about $4.00 more ($8.95) . The dolphin was grilled well. They only seemed to serve one veggie of the day: broccoli.
The service was friendly, maybe a little reserved. Â Not the most outgoing crowd.
Would I come back? Not necessarily.
This is probably a great place to come for happy hour and order some appetizers.
I was craving some raw seafood and came across this place. Â It was ok. Â I had the raw oysters and clams, which were good until I came to a clam that smelled like a dirty diaper:( Â I also had a cup of bahamian chowder which is conch chowder. Â It wasn't really good. It had this thin film of oil on the surface and it wasn't creamy it was more of a tomato base and not much conch. Â I also had something that was called a ginger ale, but definitely was not a ginger ale. Â
Probably would't come here again.
I'm giving The Whale 4 stars because the mid day meal we had yesterday was so delicious and hot - VERY satisfying. Â They must have just put in fresh oil because the Whale Fries were crisp, light and heavenly. Â The fried shrimp and Fish/Chips were perfection. Â We've eaten here every now and again and while it's usually always fairly good, the service is usually ok, yesterday it was spectacular. Â The waitress was friendly but not on top of you and the beer cold.
The Whale fries when you get them hot and fresh like yesterday DO Â NOT get any better. Â Whale - whoever was cooking 9/18 around 3 pm should get a little bonus because it was obviously prepared by someone who cares about what they send out that window.
Great job. Â I see the poor reviews before and I would recommend giving this place a shot. Â Like all restaurants you have your good and bad days, your good and bad staff.
I agree with the current average of 3 stars, 'just ok'.
Went with the little ones, which it's a fine place for. Â Keep in mind that we really like the Whale's Rib in Deerfield. Â Very different experience, which is fine, just don't' expect the same.
I had the whale reuben (cole slaw instead of sour kraut), no cheese, mahi. Â Was pretty good. Â It came with the homemade chips and the whale sauce..the latter was very good.
My wife had the fish tacos, pretty good. Â The kids shared a a kids meal fish nuggets...decent. Â We all had water to drink.
All this ended up for $36 with tax and tip. Â Maybe it's me but I thought it was a drop overpriced for what it was.
I might be back.
Nice place to hang outside and drink a cocktail. The seafood is poor, the service is poor, the fries are cold and stale. Â I've been here a handful of times just because I love oysters but I've ALWAYS left feeling ripped off. Â Note: they are under new management so things may have changed. I was there 2 months ago. But beware, new management is usually a red flag.
Review Source:The Whale...
Such a impressive name for the incongruous little spot in the relatively new area of Parkland.  I was with someone who had a seafood craving, and it was recommending we head here.  Inside is kind of an eclectic mix of laid back sports bar with a slightly more upscale vibe.  The menu offers your standard raw bar fare, plus some salads, sandwiches and seafood.
I opted for the jumbo scallops "whale style" which meant it was cooked with corn and shrimp.  The scallops themselves were tasty, very well cooked and fresh.  Unfortunately the sides it came with, the broccoli and the garlic mash were both a bit bland and dry.  Presentation was clearly not a factor.  Very basic!
Service was good, and the menu wasn't too adventurous, but they did deliver on the decent quality seafood.  Would probably be a nice spot to grab a beer, some seafood, and watch a sports game.  I may come back "Once in a Whale..."
Love when the staff wants to go home at 930 on a Friday night that they flash the lights on and off above the tables till you want to leave... bisque was oily and crab legs rubber. Â But the Corona was cold...
Close your Kitchen an hour before closing and don't take 9pm guests for dinner. Â The light stunt was really annoying and we were not the only ones in the restaurant.
I don't usually make my way up to that area, I'm glad I did. I really enjoyed eating at the whale raw bar. The service was VERY attentive and friendly. The food was awesome and fresh. Everything we had at the table was enjoyable. From the clams to the shrimp to the mahi mahi. I couldn't stop eating all the goodness at the table. I almost had to be carried out of here I was so stuffed. Check this place out if you want some great food and drinks. The only thing I didn't like was the one person bathrooms! But the food and service will soon having you forgetting about them.
Review Source:It's a regular stop for us. As Wendy mentions, great specials. I like the cajun prime rib on Fridays. If you enjoy a french dip, this is a good place to get one and be sure to have some whale fries with it. The seafood fajitas are also one of my favorites here. Tell Alan I sent you and he'll set you up with a good drink at the bar. Enjoy!
Review Source:I have been here 3 times. Â Had Fish-n-Chips, Talapia, and something forgetable. Â Nice size portions. Â On each occasion I looked at the food and thought I could make this at home. Â As another reviewer noted 'there is no love put into the preparation of the food'. Â I feel that given the quality of the food that the place is overpriced.
Review Source:I went with friends who r regulars on a Sat nite and 3 mins after the apps(raw oysters) arrived, the salads came and 3 mins after that the entrees came. Clear message: hurry up and get out. Not a relaxing atmosphere after a long work week and no one was waiting for a table either. Also, while the tuna steak was a good portion and cooked med. rare as requested the sides were awful. I ordered  the jasmine rice and asian slaw as listed on the menu as sides to go with the terryaki style fish and the rice was 1/2 uncooked and the "slaw'  was a minute portion of some wilted veggies like red cabbage and onions(both very cheap items).  And there were no consolations offered by the mngr for the 2 mishaps,  like a complimentary dessert or beverage as other establishments have in the past for lesser offences.  I will never go back and dont recommend it as what does it take to grill a piece of fish, or shuck oysters. The mngr needs to brush up on his managerial skills.
Review Source:Specials are awesome- Snow crab all u can eat on Tues for $19.99 plus whale fries! Good service, lots of locals and a good atmosphere. We have been coming here more regularly and like it more and more. Still not very good clam chowder and the raw oysters are pasturized and tasteless, but their seafood as a whole is good. Love the fish and chips! Still stay away from  sandwiches which are dry with too much bread.0 and stick to basics. I have not tried the scallops, so can not comment.
Review Source:This is the first review that I ever have written for a restaurant.  I am writing because there are not that many reviews and this place was outstanding.  We wanted to find a raw bar that was not smokey like  the other raw bar in Coral Springs.  The service was great, the food was fresh - we honestly think these were the best oysters we have ever had - AND they had ipswich steamers - which is a hard find....everything was yummy!!
Review Source:It was ok. Â I went the 1st week they opened and it was awful but gave it a 2nd chance this week. We went for lunch (4 adults, 2 young kids) and it was $85 and no one drank, which was a bit much for some sandwiches. The food was ok but for an $85 lunch, I expected better. Â Also, they had a sign posted that said "kids eat free" on Sunday; when I inquired why we were still charged for them, they said you have to order an entree ($20 an up). I think that an $11 sandwich + $5 cup of soup should suffice as an 'entree'. Â I doubt I'd go back.
Review Source:Great place . I love sitting at the bar with a cold beer drooling at the case of oysters and clams packed on ice. Reminds me of the cool place I used to hang out in called Half Fast Raw Bar right off Commercial Blvd which has been closed for years:( Now that place was an awesome raw bar. Sorry had a flash back....Oh yeah The Whale, love the fish tacos, buffalo shrimp and the whale fries ( sliced thin potatoes and fried). The Mahi sandwich is very good and the draft beer is ICE cold and they do have a happy hour now.
They have some flat screen TVs on the walls so you can catch any of your favorite sports.
This place is the BEST raw bar in the Parkland/Springs area no one is even close. Stop in and tell the manager Pete and Julette that Dan sent you and stay Hungry!
We decided to head to the Whale for a nice dinner one night, and it turned out that while the service was decent, the food was not quite as advertised. Â The scallops we actually not scallops at all (they were the small imitation ones) bathed in fatty butter. Â I did not try their other food, however first impressions are usually the correct one.
