i love dive bars. this place is a quientesciental "dive bar". however I have not been at this bar except for after work on a weekday so i cannot speak to any other of it's aspects. the food was decent and the service was good. the bartender definately took care of us. if i wasn't leaving my job in the area i would be back but it isn't a bar i would go out of my way to go to.

Keep in mind I've only been to The Whiskey once. I'd heard from a few friends that the place was a cool, quaint bar perfect for having a few beers and hanging out with your friends. So when some friends of ours came from Chicago we decided to go up to the Whiskey to have some brews and catch up.
From the looks of the place my recommendations were correct, it IS a cute little bar.Lots of woodwork, not too much shit on the walls. The bar was a little busy but it had that Cheers kind of potential. I could see smaller groups of people having a good time there.
We ended up at the bar on a Friday night and the second we walked in the door all conversation was halted because they had club music on full blast from two large speakers that were set up in the upper seating area. Add the annoying and terrible music to a disco light and a DJ who was the only one enjoying the music. There were only two tables left and they were the ones directly in front of the speakers. Conversation was impossible. No one was dancing to the music unless you count the DJ who was bobbing his head and making a big show with his giant headphones and occasionally adding the scratching sound to the music. As I said it's a tiny bar and realistically, even if anyone wanted to dance, there isn't room not to mention I don't see the dancin' kind of crowd hanging out there. Most of the people in the bar (us included) were trying to shout over the music to each other with little success.
When the bartender (no wait staff) came back with our drink order, I asked if the music could be turned down (not off) because no one was dancing and everyone had to scream over the music. She made a face at me and told me indignantly that it was Friday. She gave me no other explanation other than what day it was as if I were stupid not to know Friday was for strobe lights and terrible music. We finished our beers and got the hell out of there.
I will say, I can see the Whiskey being a cool little bar Monday -Thursday (maybe Sunday too if they don't have that DJ)  I am assuming it isn't always that bad since the people that recommended it to me aren't club go-ers either. All I can say is, if you are the type of person who hates LOUD bad music, don't go the Whiskey on the weekends.
