First of all this isn't Tara C, rather her old man...
Is it possible to give negative infinity stars??? This place=sh!tballs. Garbage poop.
The 'sole' or whatever in their buffet tasted like a piece of old fish with ivory soap rubbed on it. I generally have a pretty high tolerance for "buffet-food" and this was worse than eating out of a dumpster. Do you want to hear the worst part? They couldn't even keep the damn thing stocked with food! Just some sad old pieces of unidentifiable former sea organisms floating in oily water.
I realize this isn't a very useful review because of the lack of details. YOU DON'T NEED ANY.
BUYER BEWARE.
I have been visiting Colonial Beach regularly my entire life and Wilkerson's has been the one constant as other places have come and gone. Â It has a friendly staff, a great view of the Potomac River, and good food. Â If you are looking for fancy seafood look elsewhere. Â This place serves simple stuff. Â If you stick with the crab cake and soft shell crab sandwiches, or the fried oysters, you will not be disappointed. Â They bring hush puppies before the food and you have to be careful not to fill up on them. Â They are very good. Â The seafood buffet on the weekends is pricey but you get what you pay for. Â If you are ready to eat a lot of food, go for it. Â If not, you can order off the menu. Â Every year they serve a buffet on Thanksgiving day that is a good value.
Review Source:Overpriced for, as other reviewers have mentioned, a bunch of standard frozen-variety fried seafood that could just as easily have come out of a Tyson's package. Had high hopes given the location, the view, and the full parking lot, but was disappointed. A significant waste of money as far as I am concerned; even spoke to the owner about the experience. He seemed nice enough but was more interested in identifying the particular waitress involved with some slow service rather than addressing the overall morale of the employees (clearly low) or the quality of the food. Moreover, he didn't offer any kind of discount or hospitable gesture, which would, in my opinion, have at least mitigated my disappointment with Wilkerson's. Just a small sign that the owner cared - like, hey sorry, but do please come back. But no, not really.
On a pleasant note: the dining room is kind of cute-casual and the view is nice, but unless you're either starving or have remarkably low expectations for your visit to Colonial Beach, I highly recommend driving on, folks.
The Park Ranger at George Washington's Birthplace National Monument recommended Wilkerson's in Colonial Beach as a place for lunch. We're always in the mood to find a good seafood restaurant and so headed into town, just a few miles away from the historic site.
No disappointments here! The restaurant is located right on the water at Potomac Beach, with a great view across the wide Potomac River to the Maryland shore. The waitress brought a basket of warm Hush Puppies to start. Very good! All main courses include the Salad Bar. It is not large, but there was plenty to find on it for our salads. I ordered Grilled Rockfish with a Baked Potato and Susan Grilled Sea Scallops. Both were very good! (They took a while to come out, but were worth the wait.) Afterwards, our waitress offered to provide us with iced tea to go.
On another road trip to the Northern Neck, we were back again! This time I ordered Bacon-Wrapped Grilled Scallops, the special of the day. A very interesting twist! Our food came out much faster this time. Again, the main course was accompanied by Salad Bar and a Baked Potato.
This was my second time at Wilkerson's Seafood Restaurant. Â I was very impressed with the restaurant the first time I had dinner there. Â Looking forward to kicking off another season my mother and I decided to drive the 45 minutes to have the buffet. Â There was a moderate amount of cars there and when we entered we were greeted almost immediately by a waitress. Â After we were seated, two couples were seated after us and they received their drinks and hush puppies before us. We had to ask two waitresses could we get a waitress before she arrived. Â Let me add the waitress we finally got was very pleasant and not overbearing!
The restaurant offers a full menu but we purchased the buffet. The buffet is overpriced (27.00) for a seafood restaurant right on the water that doesn't serve all fresh seafood. Â The clams, shrimp, and oysters all tasted prepackaged frozen. Â The crabcakes were ok but you could tell they do not use lump crab, this fish (on the buffet) had no taste/flavor, not even a fishy one. The salad bar was very depressing. Â Offering just Iceburg lettuce, cheap croutons, and an array of the other salad items that took up half of the buffet line. They do make sure that you have plenty to drink to swell all the breading they have on their seafood and hushpuppies. Â
Based off my two visits I will say this, if you just want to have dinner WHILE OUT at Colonial Beach and have a taste for a large amount of (pre-packaged) seafood and can avoid drinking liquids you can enjoy this buffet. Â Would I suggest you break your neck to get to the restaurant to have their seafood, the answer would be no. Â But if you are looking for a roadside seafood place with a great view of the water and you don't mind paying over 20.00 dollars per person then this is a place to stop if and only if you are in Colonial Beach.
I had high hopes for a local seafood restaurant with Potomac-front property and great tableside views.
Control yourself with the hush puppies, they're delicious.
But a meager salad bar, just okay fried everything, and overcooked vegetable sides kind of killed it for me. Â I sort of felt like the menu didn't have much imagination, either.
This is based on two visits - they do have seafood, and it's hearty and portioned generously. Â Beyond that though, there's not much except the interior that's stuck in 1983.
The hush puppies are good. Â But that's about where it ended. Â The flounder I had was slightly less than passable. Â The lemon wedge had obviously been sitting out over night before being tossed onto the plate with a wilted leaf of greens. Â Not a place I would go back to, maybe I visited on an off day, but needless to say thats not really a great excuse. Â The place has been around a long time, so they must be doing something right.
Review Source:The service here is abysmal. Â The 2nd-to-last time we went, our waitress was so unattentive that we had to flag down another waitress to refill drinks and crabs. Â With 4 hungry people and a $200 tab, that is totally unacceptable. Â Our last experience was the final straw. Â We show up about 25 minutes to close. Â We are aware that closing time is approaching, so we ask the waitress BEFORE we sit down if we'll be allowed to order crabs. Â She assures us it's fine and tells us to take our time. Â Our meal begins with her snatching my date's salad plate out of his hands and throwing it away. Â Apparently, he had grabbed something from the "hot" side of the buffet. Â Then, we are hurriedly served over-done crab legs, most of which were empty or had shriveled meat inside. Â Then, we're told that there are no more crabs. Â I've never been so rushed and ripped off during a meal. Â $100 for two people to leave hungry? Â HECK no. Â Wilkersons, you've lost 2 loyal customers.
Review Source:My husband and I went for a Sunday Drive this past week down to Colonial Beach.  Our thinking was we would be able to get some good food due to Westmoreland County's abundance of farms and situation between the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers.  We avoided the obvious tourist trap restaurants by the marina and decided to stop for lunch at Wilkerson's Seafood Restaurant after seeing its historic oyster cans as décor in town and learning that they have been in business for nearly 70 years.  We figured they would be a good place for fresh and local seafood and produce.
We opted for menu items instead of the greatly over-priced buffet ($27 for mostly fried fare sitting under heat lamps all day). Â We both ordered the crab cake sandwich; I selected green beans while my hubby chose the more traditional French fries for our sides. Â As soon as our pleasant waitress walked up with our dishes I knew we had chosen the wrong restaurant. Â Our plates were sad sights to behold: a dated lettuce and orange segment garnish, khaki colored canned green beans in a small bowl for the lady and limp, undercooked French fries for the gentleman. Â The crab cake sat on a too large Croissant(!) with nary an accoutrement. Â We had picked the broiled version rather than selecting to destroy the sweet crabmeat by deep frying it, but apparently that would have been preferred to the wet, obviously microwaved, and likely imitation-crab disaster we ended up with.
Here we were in the heart of a major agriculture and seafood region eating frozen French fries, canned green beans (in July), and imitation crabmeat sandwiches without lettuce or tomato. Â How could this be? Has the owner been screened for depression, because how else besides abject hopelessness can one account for such embarrassing and sad food? Â Has Wilkerson's "chef" missed all the hoopla and interest in local, organic, and fresh food? Â Does he not realize that he is very well situated to take full advantage of this new trend in cuisine? Â That the purveyors haven't been run out of town after a few weeks of selling such food baffles me, but nearly 70 years of this is inexplicable. Â
On a positive note, the orange segment was quite good.
Driving by it had the promise of something great, one of those places you expect to be a true rare find. Â My wife and I stopped in for dinner over the holiday weekend and found the service top notch, we got the seafood buffet has it was the special and tried all the a fare only to be a bit underwhelmed. Â The crab soup was a bit watery and the fresh seafood was a bit over fried. Â It wasn't horrible but it was just OK. Â Seemed to have a large local following.
Review Source:We visit Colonial Beach often and finally had dinner last night at Wilkerson's. We arrived around 7ish and the place wasn't busy at all. I know this isn't the case in the Summer time, as I've drove by and seen this place packed!! Anyway, they weren't offering the buffet tonight (maybe it's just in the Summer??), but the food we ordered was delicious. The waitress was very nice and the service was great!! I'm sure we'll be back again to try the buffet.
