I would NEVER have told anyone that I would EVER be found in a wine bar. But, here I am. I came here to meet a lot of friends from work. It was the collective choice, not mine.
But when I arrived, I was undeniably impressed. I was the first one to arrive and the waitress was very helpful. She was nice and not as snooty as I had initially expected. The ambiance was really hip and made me want to come on a romantic fling. Instead I awaited my work friends.
When they arrived, I found myself having an incredibly good time. The waitress knew exactly what to recommend based on everyone's preferences and wasn't a wine snob at all. She was informed, knowledgeable and helpful. Not at all what I expected to receive.
The drinks were fantastic. I had a couple cocktails and tried a couple of glasses of wine. I was impressed with all of them that were served. I should have tried some of the snacks, but I wasn't there long enough. Definitely a place to check out.
I went to the Wine loft on Saturday night to enjoy a glass of wine and appetizers. There was a guy playing live music. The music was nice and relaxing. The Wine Loft has a variety of wines for customers to enjoy. You can buy the bottle or a glass of wine. I had a glass of the Bottega Vinaia Pinot Grigio. The Pinot Grigio was fresh and flavorful. I had the Coopers Vineyard Noche (chocolate) dessert wine as well.Yes; I got to have my dessert in wine form. The Noche is one of my favorite wines. It's sweet and full of flavor. The Wine Loft has some some good food options.I decided to try the barbeque chicken flatbread appetizer (Roasted Chicken, Cheddar Cheese, Caramelized Onions, & Barbeque Sauce). The BBQ chicken flatbread was tasty. For dessert, I chose the tiramisu. The tiramisu was average at best. I expected more from the tiramisu especially for the price. The Wine Loft has a bar, standing room, tables, and comfortable seating (couches). There's patio seating with heaters as well. The service was average. The upstairs lounge area in the Wine Loft usually fills up fast. I like the view from the top of the Wine Loft. I sat on the couch and watched college basketball because there was a wait to sit upstairs. The dim lights give the Wine Loft a romantic feel. The atmosphere was grown and sexy. The décor is nice and modern. There's parking in a deck next to the Wine Lofts (free). If you want to enjoy a glass of wine with a nice ambience, The Wine Loft is a great choice. I give the Wine Loft a 3.5 rating rounded up to a 4 because of the nice ambience.
Review Source:Pros- great decor--very modern yet comfy, chic yet not too pretentious, bartender was helpful, baked Brie with pecans, balsamic and greens was amazing and the wines were impressive. Went here with my guy and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Cons- a bit pricey...four glasses of wine and two apps were $70. We walked in and no one greeted us so it was a bit awkward.
The Wie Loft is fine. Decent. Nice. But its not great, fantastic or worth writing about (errmmmmm). I would say the drink menu is probably the best thing about the place and to have some designed cocktails and a good wine list is appealing. However, the place has a couple of flaw. First, now granted, I have only ever been there during the week but it generally seems fairly quiet. Second, the food is overpriced for what you get and is generally pretty heavy. A bunch of flatbread pizzas, cheeses and other 'small plates' are on offer but if I was paying, I would feel like I was getting pretty ripped off.
Explore the area a little bit, there is a lot more out there.....
The Wine Loft certainly has potential. The inside is dark, intimate and cozy. There are seats at the bar, a few long high top tables, and some sofas. There is also a large patio which looks great for nice weather.
I was in town on business and while on my way to Whole Foods I stumbled across this place. I remember a coworker telling me about it, so I decided to give it a try. It was a Monday night and fairly quiet. There seemed to be only two waitresses who seemed to be overwhelmed by the few patrons there, so I might be hesitant to try this place on a busy night.
The wine list is large and has wines from lots of different countries and regions. They do have a fair amount of different flights which I thought was a nice touch if looking to try a few. The wine is a tad on the expensive side, but they appear to have a deal almost every night, so certainly can be affordable. I went during happy hour and had a very nice glass of Chenin Blanc for $5. They also have a full bar, so there is something for the non-wine drinkers as well.
As for food, I tried the pecan, pear, and blue cheese salad which was quite good. Everything was really fresh and it was no overdressed. I tried one of the flatbreads as well, which I would classify more in the pizza range. I had the Black & Blue (tenderloin, blue cheese, roasted red pepper, and mozzarella). There was hardly any meat on the flatbread and I have no idea where the blue cheese was. If there was any blue cheese it was completely overpowered by the mozzarella. Salad was good, flatbread was disappointing.
Appears to be a decent place to grab a drink or two. And if you need something to soak up the booze the food is decent....
Met up with a couple of my favorite people on Thursday night for some wine and conversation. I have been here a few times for various networking groups and such, so I thought it would be a nice, comfortable choice for a chat with some fellow wine aficionados. My first impression on this particular evening happened well before I hit the front door as I had to do a lap the entire complex to find a spot. Not necessarily The Wine Loft's problem, as I prefer street parking to garages, but I couldn't help but notice how many new places have opened out in that West Broad Village complex.
In any case, we settled into one of the lounge-y couch, chairs and table areas and ordered our wine. Nothing too adventurous once we were told of the happy hour specials. This place has a nice wine list, so even if you get something that's not "on the board" for a discount, you trust that they're giving you something decent. The red choices were malbec and cabernet sauvignon. I opted for the malbec first, but ultimately preferred the cab. It's worth noting that we arrived separately and the first companion asked about happy hour and then had to suggest them to the other two when the waitress was not immediately forthcoming with the information. Poor service or smart service, I don't know, but it was noted.
We snacked on one of the flatbread pizzas, nothing too fancy, just chicken, mushrooms, arugula, pesto. A fine appetizer for two or three, which is what we were, so no complaints there. All in all, a pleasant visit... nothing standout, but just the background we were looking for.
I would be remiss to not make this note... Fellas, if you love wine and you're looking for a lady, you should get familiar with this place. The ratio was heavily skewed female, at the bar, at the tables and even in the gathering space upstairs. Just throwing it out there...
I really enjoy this place. I have been three times and it is a great place to sit and have a drink and appetizers with friends. The "modern"/wine bar setup with big chairs, and couches is very comfortable .. when it is not busy. The food is very good. Overall it is a little pricey, but some of the wines are deserving of that price point. I only gave this three stars because of the staff. Though in general terms I like them, everyone is a little standoffish to snobby in a way. You sort of get ignored at the door as if you are supposed to know right away to just sit down. I get the feeling not many people like that style of operation. The experience is not a complete turn off, but if your in a bad mood or on edge this place could get to you. My friends ordered flights and were not told on one occasion what they were. We did find out later there was a secret (look for the mark and go clockwise). I am returning again soon and am hoping the staff is a little friendlier than last time. I'll update again after that visit.
Review Source:Patio + huge wine list + cheese board= delightful place for happy hour.
Tried this place out tonight, and liked both the menu options and the
patio. Â I had a glass of riesling recommended by the waitress, and then a flight of "unusual white wines", which was $3 off. My friend and I also got a artisanal cheese tray, which was interesting and delicious. Â
The wine list is really extensive, and though the prices can be steep, they do nightly specials (Tuesday's are half off bottle nights) so you can definitely drink affordably here. Â
I also really liked their food menu- it fits the ambiance and lets you focus on the wine and pair your food appropriately. Â
And I like that they have a fully stocked bar. Cause sometimes you don't want wine... but you want to drink at The Wine Loft anyway :)
Two picky things that led me to deduct a star- When I walked in, the place was empty and there was noone at the door to greet me so I wasn't sure if I should seat myself, wait to be seated, etc... and when I got outside to the patio, the music was really loud... both of those things scream- awkward new restaurant- to me.
Right next door to my apartment, so it's kind of a default for me when people are over and suddenly want to go out and get a drink.
The decor is pretty neat & modern (if not dim) and during the nicer times of the year, the outdoor patio is not terrible. It is right next to a road, though, so it's not the most picturesque. Also when it's windy a sort of wind-tunnel effect forms between the patio and the building next door so watch for your napkins.
The 1st Friday of every month they have some sort of 'theme night'. Last night it was Pajama Night which was downright weird. In the middle of the shift our waitress had to change into her pajamas which threw me off because she came back in a totally different outfit.
The wine is EXPENSIVE (even by the glass). I requested a Pinot and she said they start at $17 a glass and she thought it wasn't very good. Hmm, ok. Shouldn't they take it off the menu then?
They recently expanded their food menu to include salads, appetizers, and flatbreads. I've only tried the flatbread, which in essence was a pizza so no big surprises there. One word: Meh. It was good to munch on something while having wine but I it wasn't worth the $10. Also, warning for vegetarians: the mushroom flatbread uses mushrooms sauteed in beef stock.
I went here with my sister for an event sponsored by http://RichmondMom.com. The downstairs was nice with large windows and ample lounge seating. However, the event was upstairs in the "loft" which supposedly can hold 60 people. Well, over 100 people had rsvp'd so I'm glad we got there early. If it wasn't so crowded then it would have been a little more enjoyable. On the other hand, the servers were bringing appetizers that were not suitable for pregnant mommies! One app had blue cheese and the other was salmon. Maybe it was http://RichmondMom.com that didn't plan accordingly but the kitchen should know the clientele. All the other apps were just ok. Don't think my sister or I will go back to this place anytime soon.
Review Source:The first word that comes to mind when entering The Wine Loft is intimate. Â The second? Â Pretentious.
My boyfriend and I stopped by this past Friday night around 6:30 for some wine before heading out to dinner. Â The door greeter was really nice...though why they make her stand outside in 40 degree weather, I'm not sure. Â Once inside, everything is very dark...low lighting, brown carpet, brown sofas and chairs, brown walls. Â Suffice it to say, if you don't like brown, this is not your place to be. Â
We walked in...no hostess or sign saying to wait, seat your self, go stand in the corner, etc. Â Oh wait...I forgot, the greeter is standing outside. Â We found a table and went to sit...but there was a "Reserved" sign. Â Found another table with yet another "Reserved" sign. Â There were several bars, one with available seating, but when we walked over, we were told that the seats were being held for people that were on the way.
We stood there for a few minutes looking around, several waitresses walked passed us, but none approached us to see if we'd like a drink or some other type of assistance. We went upstairs to see if there was seating up there. There was, but there were "Reserved" signs. I finally went over to what looked like a station to enter drink orders and asked the waitress if there were any unreserved tables. She pointed to a couple of seats at a long table where other people were already sitting. She said that we could sit there, but there was a group of 8 coming and once they arrived we would have to get up and sit somewhere else. Â
Um...what?? Â
She then said that we could sit downstairs, but we let her know that everything there was on reserve. Â She looked around some more and then said that she could put our name on a list for the next available table. Â
There's a list? Â It would have been nice to know that in the beginning. Â Perhaps if there was a sign or a hostess we would have known.
So maybe giving The Wine Loft 2 stars is unfair because I never actually got to eat or drink anything. Â However, I don't quite understand why they would make paying customers give up their seats when a party arrives. Â Or keep seating empty when there were potential customers right there. Â Or why there's a sign in list that you find out about only after you approach a waitress to try and get service.
Maybe the poor customer service is because they're new and still working out training and such...or maybe I'm not part of the "urban-chic" demographic they're after. Â Either way, I'll be at Caturra's enjoying a nice glass of Ironberry and some killer goat cheese crostini.
