this is my go to lunch spot in ventnor, you really cant beat the lunch box specials.
i love the dinner too, enough to pay $16 for a dinner entree on a regular old weeknight. since the remodeled last year, it is really gorgeous inside, in a simple way. a nice dining experience. i would go back any time i'm in the area and certainly recommend.
Yama is not the prettiest sushi joint, nor does it have the best service. But they have one roll that makes me keep coming back for more. They're also BYO, so hop over to the liquor store across the street and pick up a couple bottles.
The sushi at Tomatoes is some of the best and freshest I've had, and yet I keep coming to Yama for the Hawaii roll. Shrimp tempura, mango, cucumber, topped with avocado and a special sauce. Not sure what makes it so yummy, but it really is.
Great alternative to Tomatoes for sushi on a Friday or Saturday summer night, or on your way back home from the shore.
We have eaten here 2 times this summer, and this place gets crowded on weekends after 7:30.. The service was not bad .. The food was ok .. I have had a lot better salmon grilled and the sauce was not good.. but the people eating with me really enjoyed their dinners( bento box was one and sea bass was the other good meal.)  (don't look in the kitchen window  on your way to the front door ) the outside tables were all full..
Review Source:I've been to a lot of sushi places around here.
Out of Sakura in Egg Harbor Township, Osaka in Egg Harbor Township, Ginza in Egg Harbor Township, Ginza II in Egg Harbor Township, Izakaya (Fusion) in Atlantic City, Sushi Town in Northfield, Fiji in Linwood, Bay Ave Sushi in Somers Point, and the Sushi Buffet in Mays Landing, and Mt. Fuji in Absecon, Yama was my least favorite.
My first experience was take-out. I was craving a sushi fix and getting off work late and I heard that this place was open til 10:30. WOW! COOL! I thought...
Perhaps it is better for a fresh raw fish restaurant to close earlier. Perhaps getting the end-of-the-night catch is the wrong move. Still, I'd hope that if a sushi restaurant would offer late-night service, that the service and freshness would be consistent all hours of activity. I called and because I had never been there before, I asked the order-taker to make a recommendation for me/let the chef make me two hot rolls of his choice, perhaps with one of them containing fresh eel. Almost all sushi chefs I've encountered have appreciated a customer who will let them express their creative intentions this way. Not Yama.
Either the communication between chef/waitstaff/hostess is bad, or the order-taker was just impatient. Either way, I feel sick writing this review right now.
She was so peeved that I asked her to recommend me something (and just seemed annoyed in general by my existence) that I just picked two rolls out of a list she rambled on to me without any description of ingredients. Again, we would have skipped this arduous selection process if she had just listened to me and MADE ME WHATEVER. Seriously. For a restaurant to lack identity like this was offensive to me. Make me something wonderful, two of them, no price limit, why is this so hard?
I ended up getting two special rolls which the total came to $24 so I expected some decent sushi take-out. Wrong. The unintelligible phone conversation lead to two rolls which were paired horribly but okay whatever. The spicy tuna roll with what seemed like spicy mayo and I-honestly-don't-know-what-else was actually decent. A little too hot for my taste. No need for soy sauce, enough flavor, except the rice was strange and from what I'm reading, they use brown rice, which is really weird.
The second roll was a banana shrimp tempura mango fusion mess. Very sweet. This should really be a dessert. I mean, I guess it was pretty good. Shrimp tempura + banana? Interesting flavor...But this is the flavor that I am burping up hours later. Queasy combination. I guess I shouldn't have tried this place an hour before closing (despite the fact that the place was busy late on a Wednesday night) the way I feel right now doesn't suggest "fresh".
Will not be back. This place is pepto-required with a bad shoobie attitude. Just wasn't right.
Had the Tuna pizza here and it was delicious, great flavor and taste. Â Â The sushi and rolls however are just OK, nothing spectacular. Â Â The service is rough, and mostly untrained as well as having difficulty communicating. Â Â The staff is mainly Chinese so they know little about Sushi or Japanese cuisine. Â Again, not bad, but you've had better.
Review Source:Yama is a decent sushi restaurant. Â
The raw fish is very fresh and tasty. Â I ordered one of their special rolls and it was fantastic, but you can't order much more than that because it's so expensive. Â Regular rolls maybe only $1 or $2 more than normal though.
The service was god awful, but I think it is at most places at the shore. Â
BYO so bring your Sake!
Food is delicious, place looks great after remodel but...
The food is way too overpriced.
I ordered 4 pieces of sushi (1 small strip of fish on a teaspoon of rice) Â for $4.00/each!
I also ordered one order of maki/nori rolls (ie: California rolls) and the price was 6.00, OK, but it was ONE piece of nori! (that's only six bite size pieces)
I paid almost $20 for a portion of food no bigger than a small salad plate! very disappointing but it was delicious and fresh.
So sad, i love this food, and this place is convienent, but i have a mortgage to pay so I wont be back anytime soon.
I didnt like the brown rice either.. They should give u a choice about that..
Over the winter, the decor was redone and the place looks great. Â It's all modern and dark sleek finishes. Â Unfortunately the service is still all over the place. We had a reservation but they still gave the only empty table for 2 to a walk in couple who arrived at the same time as us. Then they stuck us at the table right next to the host area so we were bumped and jostled by all the people waiting (who also seemed to have had reservations but still waiting nonetheless). Â
But the food was excellent again. I had all raw rolls and they were fresh and good portion sizes.
Please get the service stuff ironed out bc I want to come back for the good food and convenient location.
Sushi were mediocre. Nothing special about their rolls but they use brown rice instead and I'm definitely not a fan. Brown rice made the whole presentation not appetizing because it looks dirty. Plus, it makes everything more "rough" tasting. Â Also, there's no alcohol served here. The waitress said we can go next door and buy our own. We opted not to do so because this restaurant didn't seem to be in the busiest or safest area. (There weren't anything else around.. street was dark..) Finally, we were rushed to finish and pay at least a good half hour before they supposedly close. There was only one waitress working and everything about the service just weren't up to par.
Review Source:Good food, poor service.
For a relatively small restaurant with 3 chefs making food, it took way too long to get our food -- over an hour between ordering our sushi and getting it. Â The waitress didn't check on us or apologize for the wait, and it was pretty tough to get drink refills.
That said, when we finally did get the food, it was excellent. The highlights of the meal were the Lobster Roll (special menu) and the Gus Roll (normal menu). Â I'll definitely eat their food again, but probably takeout.
This is the absolute best sushi restaurant in South Jersey. My fiance and I have tried nearly every sushi place and no compare to Yama. The service is always wonderful when we go. We usually always order the same thing but anything we have tried we have always loved.
For appetizers I highly recommend Sushi Pizza... wasabi shumai is also really good. Favorite rolls are (#1) GODZILLA, Spider Roll, Hot Lovers Roll (which is pink) and the lobster roll. If you come for dinner try the crispy duck.
Bottom Line: Â The sushi is very good, the servers are oblivious
They used to play lovely classical music years ago - now they only play muzak. Â Greeted today with "you 3 people - you come"
Pet Peeve: Â Our young daughter did not order any sushi, but instead she ordered shumai, edamame beans & miso soup. Â The miso came out with our appetizers, but the edamame & shumai came out together before my husband and I received our sushi. Â So - she ate by herself and was finished by the time our sushi arrived. Â Then we ate while she watched us eat...
Decor could be freshened up. Â The stuffing is coming out of the black couch as you walk in the door - it's the first thing you see...
We'll go back - they are accommodating when you ask for something, but the wait-staff is just not very well-trained.
I came here with my company for a goodbye party of 16 people.
The entire meal I felt as though we were being rushed out.
Our store had an issue that evening, so 6 of our party members were running about fifteen minutes late; our meal was supposed to start at 8:30. At 8:40 our waitress "Mindy" told us that we could not wait any longer and HAD to start ordering.
When we finally did order it was like we were being questioned by the police. Our waitress would ask us our order by saying "You will order now!". We really got some nasty attitude from this waitress.
One of my favorite moments of the evening was when Mindy told us that the restaurant closed at 10 so we really needed to hurry up. Luckily for us, we were able to point out the sign plainly in front of her said "Open Tuesdays until 10:30PM".
Eventually, one of my co-workers went inside and said that we needed a new waitress immediately.
The food was decent, nothing special, especially for the fairly high price. I had steak teriyaki and a Philadelphia Roll
I genuinely felt like my business was unappreciated here and especially would not suggest this venue for any larger gatherings or parties.
Great sushi at manhattan prices with a hefty dose of aggro NY/NJ/Philadelphia attitude on the part of the clientele.
The price tag for rolls ($13-$15) was a tad bit of turn off, but given the creativity of the rolls, it is well worth it. Go with the Godzilla roll! The spicy tuna anything is pretty good. They also carry Ramune soda (japanese soda sealed with a marble) that IS MY FAVORITE beverage of all time. It is also a BYOB place, and there are plenty of liqour stores around to pick up a bottle of saki or wine, and take to your table.
There have been a couple of negative things said about the service. Actually seeing the how the clientele acts and how the service is very kind and accomodating, I have to speak up for the staff. I have never seen so many impatient and rude people try to pick fights with staff before. Perhaps they are not the best at arranging tables and accomodating large crowds in this small restaurant. Sometimes you have to repeat your order, but they try to clarify things. There might be a longer wait than usual. So you had to wait for a table for 10 minutes, that's no reason to yell at a host. Â A table of seated table of eight had to wait for twenty minutes for their food. Let's keep in mind they ordered tons of food that takes time to prepare, got their appetizers and were beligerently loud in their drunken conversation the whole time. Not only did they give the waitress an earful, who was very apologetic, they stiffed her. I watched an ordinarily polite girl who worked her butt off, slam down the check at the bar after clearing the table.
Chill the heck out people, you're at the beach. This was my first time in Atlantic City, and you definitely have me believing that neighboring cities that I usually love ship their douchebags off to the shore in summer. I didn't think the "Jersey Shore" was that true to life. Â If I am in the area ever again, I know where to go for dinner, I'll just be sure to avoid aggro hour and go earlier.
was in the AC a rea and went per the reviews on Yelp.
had salmon teriyaki which was pretty good and portion was pretty large for the price. miso soup was pretty good as well as the salad dressing.
as for the sushi....not sure exactly what it was but the sushi rice was a little weird..the texture was more like the non sticky chinese rice and it had a brownish tint to it.. i asked the waitress if they use brown rice for the sushi and she said it was the sushi rice sauce(the vinegar) i'm not a sushi expert but i haven't seen other restaurants with their sushi having any color to their sushi rice. maybe that's why they call it Yama "Fusion" Japanese restaurant...
Decent food. Eh prices. TERRIBLE service.
There was only 2 small tables of customers. Yet not only did the waitress mess up a simple order, but when asked nicely, she lied and refused to even attempt to address it.
She also completely forgot another table's order until they asked about it when they got their bills.
We went on a Friday for lunch and got there  just before they closed (they close between 3pm to 430pm).  We had my 6 yo daughter with us.  We all decided to take advantage of the 2 roll lunch special which comes with salad and miso soup.  The salad was pretty big and made with spring mix lettuce instead of the usual iceburg stuff.  The miso ginger dressing on it was delicious!  I had a spicy tuna and the shrimp/avocado roll, my little girl had a Cali roll and a Philly roll and my bf had a spicy tuna and spicy salmon.  All of our sushi was very fresh and oh so tasty!  We also split a Godzilla roll as it was highly recommended by the other reviewers and we were glad we tried it as it was soo amazingly good.  I'm not sure why people feel it's not good for kids...maybe because most kids don't like sushi (wish someone would tell my kid that), but my daughter loved it.  The only downsides are the prices of the specialty rolls which are on the high side (but the lunch special will keep us coming back), and there is only on street parking which is probably a pain during the summer.
Review Source:Atmosphere: B. nice lil spot close to Atlantic City. Pretty standard decor and decent sized sushi bar. Food: C+. Ordered their chicken teriyaki and a jalapeño yellowtail roll. Not bad but not great. The broccoli served with my meal was underdone and the asparagus overdone. Service: B-. Took 5 minutes to get a menu and we had to grab our own chopsticks and napkin. Value: B-. 14.95 for chicken teriyaki is kinda steep. The portions were decent size.
Review Source:so far the best sushi i've had in the area.
creative specialy rolls, but the standard fare is awesome. very consistent and fresh.
the lunch sushi roll specials are outstanding. 3 rolls of your choice, salad and soup is like 13 bucks after tax.
i've read about sketchy service and i can see that if you end up with one of their servers - they have one waitress who i think is vietnamese and she is rather terse and always seems bitter. but the rest of the staff is very cordial.
they mix up the servers, at least they did last time i was there for dinner on a weekend night, so maybe this is their solution to complaints. this way you are bound to have someone that is satisfactory, haha.
On my way home I was hungry and wanted some sushi. Â Passed by this place and figured I would give it a shot. Â To say the least I surprised by the good quality sushi. I was not expecting such good quality sushi from our area. Â I only had sushi for dinner so that is only thing I Â can review.
If you from LA or New York City, you might find the sushi to be decent to good. Â For the Atlantic City area this place is very good to excellent considering our area doesn't really have any decent sushi places.
The service was very professional, courteous and attentive. Â The decor is casual and relaxing. Â The place was very clean.
The sushi rolls had inventive combinations and there were unique sashimi offerings. Â They were many fusion type rolls being offered as well.
Overall, this is probably your best bet in the Atlantic City area for sushi.
I never thought south Jersey would have a decent Japanese restaurant especially right outside of Atlantic City (sorry, last time I was here, I got lost and more hookers, drug dealers and heroine addicts in 1 hour than I have ever in my whole life).
But surprisingly, this joint had one of the best and cheapest sushi ever and was I glad to have dinner here or what?
You should come here instead of looking for a place to get some sushi in AC
