Good food, little understaffed but decent service, great location, plenty of beer choices.
Ordered fish and chips (very fresh fish and flaky crust), seafood risotto (skimpy on the seafood but rich and creamy), and a couple beers. They didn't have any cocktail sauce but our waiter was not stifled and said he would go make some and it was perfect.
I will be back when I visit Newport again. This time I'll try the sidewalk patio if the weather permits.
This was the first stop for lunch when getting into Newport. Â We were hoping for a spot on their patio, but all booked up (a good sign perhaps?) Â We sat inside in a window booth so we could watch the patio folk instead
Nice place with dark wood, pub vibe. Â I always like that. Â A little dated perhaps. Â What got me was the beer menu (as always)...Very nice selection of different beers in addition to obvious ones and apparently Magic Hat actually brews a beer specifically for the restaurant (tip: Â Nothing to write home about).
Service was good. Â Friendly waiter and nice pace. Â Made a nice recommendation on lunch special.
I ordered the Chicken Pomegranate sandwich and wife ordered the salmon tacos on waiter's recommendation. Â Both were very good and my wife was very happy with the recommended taco's.
Overall, a nice experience and way to start our weekend in Newport.
Yesterday's is great for a nice place to sit outside and people watch tourists in Newport, RI while having a beer... but not so great for anything else. We came in with no wait on busy Memorial Day and sat outside to eat with no reservation and no fuss, which was excellent considering that every other place nearby was packed. They have a great beer selection which our waitress told us rotates seasonally but it wasn't enough to make up for the meh food. I had a cup of clam chowder that barely had any clams with their "native tomato salad" which was terrible. The salad was a few slices of tomato piled on a piece of a soggy toast with a cup of arugula tossed with balsamic on top. Despite the description in the menu, the salad had barely any cheese on it and lacked flavor entirely. My husband got their "Yesterday Burger" which he said was nothing special. Went inside to use the restroom and was really surprised by the ancient looking interior (although with a name like "Yesterday's" it makes sense). It looks like someone wanted to make a Casablanca themed interior in the 1990's and never thought about updating it (or dusting inside) ever since. Three stars for excellent beer and outdoor seating location but I'd eat somewhere else first before coming in again.
Review Source:Quite possibly my favorite place to dine at  when I'm in Newport.  The head chef really knows his stuff and the food is always excellent.  I love the atmosphere even if it may come across as a little dingy.  What worries me is that they may have gotten a stigma as and older crowd's restaurant.  Often when the local dives are 2 - 3 deep at the bar or have a 45 minute wait for a table you can always get in at Yesterdays.  Which is really a shame because their food is amazing and the draft beer selection is overwhelming.  Well at least I know I'll be a regular when ever I'm in town.
Review Source:We were looking for a place later at night to go to. Â We were exhausted from a day of exploring all of Rhode Island and just wanted something quick. Â Yesterday's was on a list of places that our hotel recommended and it is right down the block.
We were seated right away. Â Our server was nice. Â The food was just eh. Â I got a chicken caesar salad, and with one look at the chicken, I refused to eat it. Â It looked a little..slimy. Â My fiancee ordered a burger and he said it tasted like charcoal. Â
The DO have a great beer selection, and the service wasn't bad. Â The lamp next to us was filthy, though. Â Which leads me to the point that it was WAY too dark in here!!
If you're looking for a quick bite, maybe come here. Â Don't come here expecting great quality.
My husband and I ate dinner here about a month ago. It's a casual pub inside with booth seating. The host at the door was very friendly as was our waitress. However, the place wasn't that clean. The lamp on our table was caked in dust, menus were sticky, as were the other items on the tables. It just made me wonder how clean the kitchen was and if it was safe to eat there.
They have plenty of beers on tap. Â My husband got the lamb/salad and it was just "okay." I ordered their signature soup (chowder) and it was not good. Â My husband had gotten a tomato soup that was very good. My fish and chips were far from the greatest fish and chips in town. Â The breading on the fish was not crispy, it was sort of "wet" and didn't stick to the fish. I will say that the prices were pretty reasonable. You get what you pay for.
Not only do they have amazing food, but they have a spectacular beer selection. Â The menu is constantly changing with delicious pairings you would never have thought to combine. Â Overall, Newport dining is quite expensive and I find that the quality of food and service elsewhere isn't that great. Â When I found this gem, I dine no-where else but here. Â Everything is fresh, modern, and great tasting. Â The servers are friendly and the atmosphere is very homey. Â A must-eat!!
Review Source:I love Yesterday's more than I love most any place ever.
They have an awesome beer selection that changes seasonally and specials that change weekly/monthly. Â If you haven't had the salmon tacos, you should eat the salmon tacos. Today and every day.
But the rest of their specials are also delicious.
I have never had anything less than an amazing service experience here, so if that's what makes your clock tick, this is your choice for Newport.
In town for a getaway weekend, we stumbled upon Yesterday's for lunch. Overall, the experience was solidly good: the food was largely tasty, with more creativity than expected, and the beer list was better than average, though they were out of one of their more interesting options my friend was hoping to try. The restaurant isn't especially remarkable, but it was a very acceptable lunch spot, and I would imagine that Yesterday's is also a solid bet for happy hour as well.
The interior is very pub-like in feel. It's somewhat worn and a bit dated, but doesn't feel depressing or run-down: "lived-in" is probably the best way to put it. When we arrived around noon on Saturday it was pretty quiet--maybe it's more of an evening spot? Our server was friendly, though I did find service to be a touch on the slow side, particularly considering the emptiness of the restaurant. We got our orders in promptly enough, but it took quite some time for our lunch to emerge from the kitchen.
The lunch menu is extensive, with a diversity of different options, flavors, and influences. Initially I was a little wary (some of the sandwich combinations struck me as particularly questionable), but was happily proven wrong. My tuna Nicoise salad was a very solid rendition of a classic: the tuna was well cooked, the dressing surprisingly good, and the various vegetable components tasty. My boyfriend was similarly satisfied with the braised short rib sandwich: the flavors were great. Others at my table split one of the pizzas (a special one with hummus and some Mediterranean vegetables), which received mixed reviews. My sister loved it and ended up taking home the leftovers; however, our other dining companion was less of a fan of the dish, finding it too garlicky. Still, we were largely pleased with the quality of the food at Yesterday's--it was definitely a pleasant surprise!
Overall, Yesterday's is worth a visit if you happen to stumble upon it. I wouldn't go too out of my way to dine here, but I would certainly consider coming back if in the area.
ACCESSIBILITY FRIENDLY !
So, where to start.
If you have been to Newport , you will know that many buildings are historic, old, and if you have ever been with someone who was older, or someone who needed accessibility, there are few business's in the " Historic District" that are accessible.
I have been to this restaurant multiple times, the food has always been very good. They always have an interesting new menu or menu items and are always very very accommodating in regards to modifications.
The biggest thing is that this restaurant is ACCESSIBLE ! I enjoy going to dinner with a dear friend who is in a wheelchair.  Its very tough in Newport  for anyone who has accessibility challenges, and by that I mean... the challenge is on the restaurant... not the patron. These restaurants are loosing business !
I highly recommend this restaurant for uniqueness of menu items and friendliness of servers. I just wish they would put a little money into the interior.
We stumbled into Yesterday's & The Place on Oct. 7 for lunch. Â To our delight, we were treated to a special Oktoberfest menu. Â Having an affinity for German food, I enjoyed a Bratwurst/Knackwurst plate with German potato salad. Â My wife ordered the jagerschnitzel. Â We were very pleased with our lunch - not having the opportunity to eat good German food very often. Â That being said, if they had not offered the special Oktoberfest menu, I suspect this place would've been rather average.
Review Source:Alright... so its about time I write and re-rate Yesterday's. Â I'm going to give it a 4 based on food alone, because the place is still run down.. one out of the two stalls in the bathroom were out of order, so losing a star for that.
I went here with a large bachelorette party and from my knowledge everyone enjoyed their meals and the waitress got everything right. Â One of the girls and I ordered two plates and split them. Â One was the Vegetarian Pizza (instead of goat cheese we asked for extra mozzarella) and the other was the Atlantic Salmon Tacos... Â both were amaaaaazing!! Especially loved the tacos! The bride (Yelps Wonderful - Meg M) ordered the Seafood Risotto which, I tasted and it was delicious. Â Huge beer menu but I stuck to wine for the evening.
Yesterday's is located in a great area of Newport and is close to the shops on Thames Street. Â It also has outdoor seating which I was unaware of before.
Went for lunch and sat outside with our dog. Â
They have a great beer list and the sandwiches we had were surprisingly good! Â I had the pomegranate chicken sandwich and it was amazing! Â I'll go back just for this. Â My husband had the sausage panini, it was good, but not great. Â
They are just a block off Thames so it's not over crowded, but the food is really good.
The decor of this restaurant seems the same as it was in 1982 (or 1974, for that matter), but in 30 years, I've never had a bad meal here. On this last outing I had the gator bites and the calamari as appetizers, caesar salad with seared scallops as an entree. They have  35 beers on tap. After 40 years, they still have French onion soup on the menu (my go to poor guy food in 1982). A reliable institution in the Newport dining scene.
Review Source:Great beer selection, mediocre food, disorganized and slow (but friendly) service.
If the owner reads this: set all of your tables before you open. That simple trick will keep customers from waiting 10 minutes to sit down when your place is half empty. Also, give everyone water. Its cheap and makes everyone content.
Offseason perspective:
Hubby and I are in town on vacation and this place was recommended by our innkeeper. Found parking across from the restaurant, in front of an old theater. We were greeted warmly and seated promptly.
I started with the clam chowder which was good. Hubby had a salad with ranch which he said was fine. They made a nice hot cider for me (wind chills in the 20s outside) and hubby had a very good beer. For an entree, I had the seafood cakes which were quite wonderful. Great flavor with a nice crunch. Came with rice (hardly touched), butternut squash (yum), and green beans (didn't eat). Hubby had fish and chips - the fish was oily and it was breaded, not battered. He was disappointed, somewhat, and wishing he had gotten my seafood cakes!
Overall, the atmosphere was nice, the service was good, and we'd go back if we're down here again.
The Food:
Yesterday's Burger. A little dry. Medium. Char flavor. But good.
Nacho Supreme. Cheese hardended. I wish there was more cheese on it. Good. Sweet. Tortillas a little stale but maybe it was due to a longer cooking time in oven.
Big Al. Roast Beef. Sweet sauce. Nice onion strings cooked differently than other places. Best thing.
House-made ranch. Wow.
The service:
Good. I think I've come to realize that the east coast service is much slower than the west coast's.
The bottom line: Overall, this place was pretty good. Fair prices for the quality, mixed in with great service. This place may be better for the Bar scene, but this also serves as a good place to sit down and eat.
Get the teriyaki roast beef and onion sandwich with fries. That's what I should've ordered. My boyfriend made the right choice and all I got were a few of his delicious scraps.
I ordered the nicoise salad, which was just not even close to as good. Maybe it was fine on its own, but the sandwich outshined it and I was left with food envy the whole meal.
A lot of the restaurants in Newport are so similar and there's really nothing that stood out to me about Yesterday's aside from the sandwich. The beer selection was a bit above average, atmosphere is very pubby and service was kinda meh, but all in all it was a solid place in comparison to others like it.
Friendly staff, extensive menu. Â The waitress was very attentive. Â Reservations a must. Â The on street parking was a pain.
They have daily specials which is what we tried. Â The stuffed shrimp was cooked to perfection, steaks too! Â We had calamari & wings for apps, also delicious!
All round, great place to eat..!!
This place was not particularly impressive food-wise. Â Sorry for those who liked it, but I'm just not impressed. Â The atmosphere is dark and reminiscent of old cigar lounge/antique restaurant. Â Neat, right? Â But then there's the food. Â The menu is large and long - so you would imagine it would be easy to find something yummy, but there wasn't anything that stood out significantly. Â Very pedestrian. There also seems to be some sort of disconnect between the menu of this place and the food you actually get. Â The list of ingredients may sound good, but when you get it, somehow the translation is bland, weak, and disappointing. Â Leaving the impression of "wait, this is it? Â lame." Â The service is good as long as it's not busy; good luck once it is.
I do, however, like the bar and bartenders here. Â They have a nice beer selection and the bartenders are always nice and attentive, regardless of how busy it is. Â This is the only reason I set foot in this place. Â Otherwise, pass.
This will be a short review.
2 things:
1: The food Menu is just meh. Nothing stands out, and nothing grabs your attention and gives you that "I MUST have it!" feeling. Call me crazy, but I love that feeling.
2: The beer selection on Tap is GREAT!
Overall, this place is good to come for a beer and some apps.
Being new to Newport my significant other and I decided to try Yesterday's. Friendly greeting at the door and a fast greet by our waiter. He orders a chicken sandwich, which he enjoyed. I ordered a chicken/pasta dinner special. The Pasta was baked in a casserole dish, making me think the chicken might have been baked with it as well. Pasta was fine, but the chicken was so dry I could not eat it. The waiter adjusted the bill accordingly, but only after I had to tell him I wasn't going to pay for it.
Overall I would say the service is 3.5 stars, and the food a 2. I will not be going back...
My boyfriend, a naval officer, was once stationed in Newport, and Yesterday's is one of his favorite places to eat there. Â That's where we found ourselves this afternoon for a late lunch.
Since it was about 2:00 - too late for lunch and too early for dinner - we were seated immediately. Â There were many empty tables this time; one weekend evening last winter when we came, we had to eat at the bar because the wait for a table was so long. Â
Yesterday's has a large beer selection. Â We were happy to see that they have Wachusett blueberry beer, one of our favorites. Â Unfortunately, the beer came without blueberries actually in it (this is customary at other places where we've been served this beer).
The lunch menu had many appealing choices. Â I chose the baked panko-crusted scallops, which came with half of a corn on the cob, a small portion of rice with diced red and green peppers, and broccoli. Â While the amounts of vegetables and rice on the dish were small, the portion of scallops was generous. Â Although they were generally good, they tasted somewhat undercooked in the center. Â The breading was somewhat bland and required a lot of salt. Â Mark had the Cajun-flavored scallops, which came with sausage and vegetables. Â I tried one of his scallops, and while it wasn't bad, it wasn't overly flavorful or spicy as I expected it would be. Â
While Yesterday's isn't a bad place to dine out, it's not exceptional. Â If you're looking for a great view of one of Newport's main streets and an old-style feel, it fits the bill.
Yesterdays is a surprisingly great dining experience just off the main tourist track in Newport, RI.I'll admit, my expectations were somewhat skewed by mixed reviews from friends and yelp. The good reviews tended to come from towneys, though, so I gave it a shot.
Yesterdays has an old school tavern type feel; growing up near Cleveland, this is the type of joint all over my hometown. Good portions, good beer, and friendly local service.
Dark wood booths and old school bar stools are lit by dim glowing sconces. Two separate dining areas give patrons lots of room and get you seated right away, a novelty seldom seen at Pour Judgement or Brick alley. (contemporary type restaurants)
The menu is expansive, featuring a great selection of fresh salads with all the best kind of fixins, as well as a full page of sandwiches highlighted by Kobe beef sliders and a burger that comes stuffed in a pocket with mushrooms and onions. The fries are crispy and fresh, and you can sub a house salad free of charge.
I had a chicken sandwich; roasted chicken with mushrooms, warm goat cheese (think its chevre) and roasted red peppers on a ciabatta with creamy balsamic mayonnaise. It was fabulous.
The beer selection was extensive and delicious; I had the warsteiner dunkel (which they keep on tap and is tremendous) and my homey had the BBC maibock, a refreshing hard to find local selection. Props to whoever picks the tap selection here, I was torn between a handful of great prospects.
Yesterdays has a rotating seasonal menu that is exciting and eccentric. Currently, for the spring, it's a carribean flavor; they take standard dishes such as the St. Louis ribs and spice them with a carribean rub and jerk pineapple salsa, for example. This practice keeps the menu fresh and keeps patrons coming back.
Check out the pairings with a local brewery; couple courses with paired beer selections on a prix fixe menu are sure to give you a good taste of what the restaurant is capable of.
I'll definitely be back.
Excellent option in downtown Newport near all the tourist action.
We lunched in the Yesterday's section of the establishment (The Place is attached and is a more upscale dinner restaurant) which features classic barroom decor: dark wood, pressed tin ceiling, tiled floor, u-shaped bar, etc.
There is an extensive beer list and the draught beers are cold and served in chilled glasses, always a great sign.
Service was good, I had a fine, tasty lobster roll and excellent fries, the wife enjoyed her Kobe Sliders, which came in a nice presentation on a rectangular plate with chipotle sauce decorative swirls. We really enjoyed both lunches washed down with chilled Anchor Steam pints.
Plenty of varied dishes on the menu and an excellent choice in downtown Newport.
We went to Yesterday's to eat after being told that the wait at the Brickalley Pub was 1.5 hours. Â
We were able to be seated right away at the bar at Yesterdays. Â Great selection of beers at the bar. Â Service from the bartenders was very prompt and friendly. Â Both of us had "gourmet" style chicken sandwiches. Â The ingredients were fresh and the sandwiches were delicious. Â We had a choice of side salad or fries with the sandwiches -- a nice option to have when you are trying to eat lighter. Â The salads were delicious and a step above the traditional, bland side salad. Â Would recommend and would go back again.
Great selection of micro brews and this alone might be worth the visit. I had a tuna wasabi sandwich for dinner which was indeed good with a house salad instead of fries. The clam chowder, however, was very thin and the only redeeming part of it was it did have a lot of chunks at least taking up more space than the liquid.
In general, the food is good, but perhaps better can be found elsewhere. For the beer, however, this might be the place to go for some variety with your meal.
Lots of German beer
A varied choice of salads
Great alt. choice off Thames
I've only ever been here for lunch, and I'd go back so long as they keep the Warsteiner Dunkel on draft. It's definitely a great place for a late lunch, although the lunch menu is a little scant. They make a dandy Chicken Cob salad and a decent burger as well. The real reason to go is the beer selection though, which is surprisingly broad for non-niche bar.
I'll start off with a positive - they have a BIG list of beers on tap. Â I was also happy with the fish and chips I had (not that its very hard to have good fish and chips). Â Alright, done. Â The chowder at this place was a big disappointment. Â It sounded so good in the description, but they left out the part about it having the consistency of chicken soup. Â It was very liquid-y.
My main gripe about this place though was the service. Â Our waiter had a good personality, but he must have forgotten to put all of our orders in... from the drinks to the entrees. Â I forget exact times, but it was long enough to make us say "whats taking so long?", wait longer, and then wonder WTF was going on. Â It was a Saturday night, and the place was half empty, so the busy excuse doesn't work.
I'd try the other restaurants in Newport before going here. Â However, if they're all booked up with reservations, Yesterdays is worth a shot.... just hope you have a different waiter.
Lunch break during the week - the lunch menu isn't nearly as extensive as the dinner menu, but what is available is quite tasty. Â I had a kobe beef burger and my friend had a deli chicken sandwich. Â Service was great, food was well-prepared, and our glasses never empty.
Only complaint - parking in Newport! Â Grr...
Decent prices, and really enjoyable consistently food. Last time I was there, I had the fried scallops. They were reallllllly good- fresh, sweet, not too heavily battered and greasy. The fries that accompanied them were crisp, but not crispy-bordering-on-potato-chip-esque, which I always appreciate. Our waiter was attentive, but not hovering. Boyfriend's lobster roll was really good as well. One star deducted for the portion size, which was a bit small for the price, I felt. I left feeling full, but was hungry again sooner than I would've liked afterwords.
Review Source:This is an old standby that hasn't failed me yet. Granted, I have a meal here about once or twice a year when I'm visiting, but when I lived there it was a regular stop for meals.
They used to have a salad on the menu that had these sun-dried tomato quesadillas that I still have dreams about. Of course, those days are long gone.
But my most recent lunch at Yesterday's was great! No complaints here.
Yesterdays: One of the better pub food places in the scene.
Good German specials. Good Beer. Expansive friendly room.
Great bar seating. Killer Bloody Mary's.
The Place: Some of the best meals I've had in the last 5 years I've had here. Homegrown Chef who knows what he's doing. They have scaled back a bit on the wine but they offer a solid by the glass list. The wine list can get into your wallet, but they have some gems. Unlike the Yesterdays you should make a reservation or eat at the bar. Many NYC types who summer in Newport have adopted this place it can be tough to get a table.
