Our night started out slow and somewhat boring. Bar hopping, grabbing a beer here and there but then.....
8e's was on the menu!!
Wonderfully energetic bar with fun people and GREAT bartenders.
Please note that I went there out of school season so the crowd might be different when in-season.
8e's is the only place we found that night that has a bar where you can smoke by it. It has 2 bars. One inside and the other is outside under a covered area with seating etc.
This is where we stayed most of the night - party because we could smoke but also because of the bartender! She was AWESOME! Smiling, funny and personable!
Needless to say we stayed there the rest of this night.
If you truly know 80's music - you may be very disappointed. Another place where the DJ and the crew themselves did not experience or ignored the past experience with the decade.
Don't expect to listen to: Simple Minds, Tears for Fears (yes, they never play Everybody Wants to Rule the World, believe or not), OMD, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Crowded House, Cure, Duran Duran (yes, Duran Duran is unknown here), Europe, Foreigner, Genesis, Huey Lewis, Human League, Information Society, Katrina, Level 42, Midnight Oil, Dire Straits, Night Ranger, Pet Shop Boys, Roxy Music, Spandau Ballet... How can it be possible being to a 80s place and never hear Safety Dance, Man without Hats?? do I need to continue? Yes, they will play eventually per request or some buried treasure like When in Rome (it seems to be the DJ's personal taste more than anything). What you can expect is a preset list of songs that repeat every single night. I don't know how but also there is an annoying insistence to play some tunes that should be from some playlist "the worst of 80s, I've made it!". If you ask, you may hear "that's what people want to dance" , well... so do me a favor and drop the 80s from the place's name and play Lady Gaga or whatever manufactured success with 2 month expiration day artist is up now.
Bottom line: the music is devastating.
The place has a good collection of 80s movies and bands... posters. Too bad that these bands music are rarely played, some I never heard. Aside the posters (which  btw is easy decoration) I was expecting real night club lights to experience the 80s, no... resources are very poor.
A small remark about the restroom: one of the most disgusting restrooms I've been. It's a new level of horrifying restrooms that make bus station or old gas station restrooms look like a 5 star hotel.
Bear in mind that I am reviewing the place. I see many reviews saying that is a funny place to go. You can have fun at anywhere with a group of good friends, that's not merit from this place though.
A bar that plays my favorite decade of music, ALL NIGHT LONG?!
I was so excited when a bunch of my friends came to visit me in my senior year at UGA and we discovered this place.. I just wish it wasn't so insanely crowded!!
We had a great time dancing in whatever little space we could find, and the music was wonderful. However, after getting pushed and shoved and dealing with drunk guys who seemed to be getting rather aggressive, we headed out a bit early, so minus one star for that.
But it's definitely worth checking out if you're visiting!
My favorite bar in Athens! Here is where the party would end for the night amongst my friends and I after a night of debauchery. During the week its great for super cheap beer-I'm talking dollar pitchers-and a relaxing atmosphere as the place is dead mid-week. A great added bonus is the interactive game and puzzle console they have in there that really is fun when you are drunk. I admit on the weekend when it is busy it is kinda annoying to elbow through crazed dancing people, but I love 80's music so much and when the whole bar chimes in with "Just a small town girl..." to the beginning of Don't Stop Believin', I'm at home.
Review Source:Looking for an overly crowded bar? You've found it at 8E's. Â College students pack every possible inch of standing space in this bar on the weekends. Â The only time I went here we had to elbow our way to the bar for our drinks. Â Dancing to 80's music is great don't get me wrong but dancing literally on top of people I don't know is not my idea of a good time.
Review Source:As a recent grad of UGA I'm constantly coming back to visit the downtown scene. Â My only complaint about 8E's is that it wasn't around when I was living in Athens. Â I heart this place! Â They play 80's music all night and posters from your favorite movies and albums line the walls. Â It's a great place to come with your girl friends for some embarassing dancing. Â Things get pretty crowded later in the night so get there fast for a prime spot at the bar and on the dance floor.
Review Source:Rediscover your 80's spunk at this brand new, funky bar! Cup after cup of 50 cent beer, you will be serenaded by stars like Cindy Lauper and Michael Jackson, until you can't tell whether it's still them or you singing in the end.
The decor might not be all that remindful of the 80's, but the pure excitement you will feel while visiting this place will definitely take you back to that glittering decade.
