While I'm still torn on the idea of ClipArt, I'd be remiss in giving anything less than a 4-star rating to a business that promotes their weekly trivia on a single sheet of white copy paper with Sir Homer J. Simpson's image sidled up next to the event info.
After that, there's also craft beer (LOTS of it) and bangers, which aren't for my strictly veggie diet, but I like the idea of taking a phallic piece of meat and combining it with the word 'bang'. What a combo!
I fell in love with their craft beer selection, but having already gotten pretty lubed up at our previous location so I went with a reallyreallygoodbutkindofpussyalcoholic ginger beer. I'd like to mention that while I did love my meager 4.3% ABV Crabbie's Ginger Beer it's $7 price tag was a little hard to stomach as were some of the other prices on beer, which were noticeably higher than other beers in area bars... but then again there aren't too many bars set away from the 'main drag' like Aberdeen Tap, so the plus side is that while you may pay a premium on certain specialty beers, the crowd here isn't your usual weekend drinking crowd or even your standard beer snob. They seem to be a decent crowd of decent people, just like you and I, who don't need to prove anything or impress anyone and just want to sit there, listen to decent not-too-trendy music and enjoy my mildly over-market-value-priced beer.
I feel like I'm just on repeat of everyone else.. but this place is (just as the reviews claim) incredible. Â The food is consistently good every time, the people who work there are super rad, and we never find ourselves waiting for anything. Â Oh, and along with everyone else, I agree.. the sweet potato tots are my absolute favorite. Â Now I am just dying for summer to come so we can go there and eat bangers and those sweet sweet tots outside at the Aberdeen Tap!
Review Source:Why have I lived in this area and waited so long to go here. Â Pretty solid beer list that I think was fairly priced. Â Nothing to extravagant, but a nice selection of common to well known craft brews. Â At the same time they had a few nice seasonal specials. Â The menu appeared limited at first glance, but once you really read into it, you'll notice a nice selection of well crafted choices. Â A lot of the ingredients are in house prepared too from what I was told (croutons, ranch dressing, etc). Â My crawfish grinder was great. Â Amy, our waitress was very helpful on explaining the menu and offering recommendations. Â Super pleasant too. Â Atmosphere is cozy, but seating is limited, so just be prepared to stand a bit. Â Very good jukebox too. Â I heard everything from punk to dub step. Â This will be a new regular spot for me. Â Great job.
Review Source:went here hungry, not knowing a thing about the place - and was WONDERFULLY pleased! Â super friendly server and bartender (they let me try a wine before committing, which I love), and the food was great! Â when i remember the name of what i got, i'll come back and add it in here. Â loved this place; was glad we stumbled upon it.
Review Source:This is such a great place. Â I am lucky I live nearby and can make this my local spot. Â The food here is absolutely incredible and they have my beer of choice (Xingu - a black brazilian lager). Â
This is a bar that is always chill... I've been a bunch of time with friends but I can also sit and enjoy some time alone.
If I was a local, I would make The Aberdeen Tap a regular spot!
The atmosphere is pleasant and hip, service is attentive (keep in mind to cut the waitress some slack if she is the only one there and the place is packed!) and the food is delicious! Â We ordered the fried mac and cheese, the hush puppies and bbq wings as starters. Â Everything was good, but the hush puppies were freaking AMAZING. Â Hot, fresh little balls of savory yet sweet cornmeal, perfectly seasoned and a little gooey in the middle.
For dinner, I ordered the slow braised pork belly grinder that came with sauteed mustard greens and a nice smear of apple sauce on top. Â It was probably the best sandwich I have had in years, touches of salty and sweet, the pork belly was cooked to perfection and the bread was nicely toasted to contrast the softness of the meat. Â As a side I chose the sweet potato tots - they were good but with the sweetness of the sandwich I probably should have gone with the regular fries.
Wonderful beer assortment, good food, bring some great friends and I promise you'll have an awesome time.
Very solid local hangout. Â Terrific beer selection without being overwhelming. Â Friendly and attentive wait staff in a warm and inviting setting. Â If your looking for a nice casual place to hangout - this will fit the bill. Â Reminds me of Silvercloud in Bucktown, and that is indeed a good thing.
Review Source:I have been going here for about a year and half and I have always been very happy with everything. But tonight I was incredibly impressed by the owner. Why?
Well my wife and I were sitting on the patio when we saw a girl get hit by a car turning right in front of the restaurant. Obviously we were all concerned, but the owner was one of the first people to help the girl out and make sure that the cops were called, and that everything was okay.
As the owner he did not need to get involved. First it was not on his property, and second no one involved was his guest, but he still just truly cared about the situation and the locals that come to his bar.
Best of luck to Aberdeen in the future and I will continue to keep coming in.
Why didn't I think of this before!? I telecommute a few times a month, but for some reason I never thought to set up shop at a bar, rather than the usual cafe.
The Aberdeen Tap was my first official bar office, and I would definitely recommend it to all telecommuters. Here's why:
- Opens at 11am starting on Wednesday.
- WiFi!
- The garage door-style front means you can enjoy the breeze without fighting the sun's glare on your laptop.
- Nice beer selection, including tasty low percentage options (alcoholic ginger beer!) so you can drink up and still write coherent emails.
- Fresh food options for a healthy lunch. (This, however, did not stop me from ordering the fried mac 'n' cheese.)
- If extra quiet is needed, they have a semi-private back room.
- And, of course, friendly staff is always a plus. Nika was a doll.
This place is a hidden gem, and I kind of like it that way.
I live right down the road from The Aberdeen Tap and I am currently working on trying to become a local regular here :). This place is amazing. Great selection of beer, cool servers, and the food is fantastic. Seriously. Try the macaroni and cheese squares. You won't regret it.
The outdoor patio is a perfect place to relax or bring a date to for a more low key time. I haven't been here yet on the weekend so I'm not sure if it's a good "party" spot but I've had a great time every time I have been. Prices are very reasonable.
If you don't like this place, I'm not sure if there's anything that can actually make you happy.
The Aberdeen Tap was the perfect end to a sweaty day at Pitchfork. The bar is gorgeously understated with a homey Chicago feel and a great music selection jamming in the background (and not too loud!). The food was phenomenal, I could eat the bacon and egg banger for breakfast lunch and dinner every day and be the happiest person alive. Look for Natasha as a server when you go, she gives honest and smart beer recommendations while also providing perfect service and more than a few laughs. I will be returning again with a big smile and ready to try something new in a cozy setting.
Review Source:Aberdeen Tap is the kind of place that makes you wish the Chicago summer would never end:
- Shaded, quiet patio,
- Really good, fresh, unpretentious food,
- Nice beer selection,
- Lots of free parking
- Not too crowded,
- Attentive and attractive wait staff.
- Reasonable prices,
- Dog-friendly!
Damn it. I forgot to write a review about this one. Hahaha... whooops!
I was invited to The Aberdeen Tap by some friends who just got into Chicago. It's a cool little neighborhood bar. I personally wasn't really able to explore it, but since it was pouring rain outside, many people found it to be a nice escape. The place was a packed house when I first got in and when I found my friends, we chugged down a heine, and headed back to their place because they ordered some Lou Malnati's pizza. Although my time at The Aberdeen Tap was short and sweet, it was a promising place to have a brewski and get your mingle on.
We came for the beer, enjoyed some tasty food, and stayed for the beer.
First, an apology. I've been frequently attracted to trying new places as they open. Unfortunately, this has caused me to miss out on trying places that are established, but new to me, like Aberdeen Tap. I've driven and walked past this place for years, and never took the time to walk in. Let's never have that happen again.
What's to like?
- An excellent and extensive draft beer list. Good representation from different regions and tastes, before you even get into their bottle list. We enjoyed selections from Brooklyn, Victory, Bell's and Left Hand.
- Tasty food (grinders with sweet potato tots, mac n' cheese bites)
- Nice space (a good mix of 4 seat high top tables, some larger tables and some extra seating in the back)
- Nice off street location (since it's a block away from a busy street, it's relatively quiet)
I can't wait to try more of the menu on a follow up visit or five.
Great neighborhood bar on the corner of Aberdeen and Hubbard. Â Excellent beer selections and my wife, the wine snob, is happy with their reds. Also, there is an outdoor seating area which should be nice this summer.
The chef is fairly new to Chicago and very good.It wouldn't surprise me if he is on to bigger things in the near future. Nice selection of bangers, grinders, and sandwiches on pretzel rolls.Great soups, chili, and gumbo but I don't think they are available during the summer months.
The owners ( Turon and Chris ) are nice guys and have put together a great team. The staff are all friendly and knowledgeable, but I have to give a special mention to Alyssa who knows more about beer than any girl I have ever met.
My first instinct was to give Aberdeen Tap 3 stars, but after giving it some thought, I realized this was simply due to the fact that the guy at the table next to me had the most obnoxious, ear-splitting, meal-ruining laugh I have ever heard. And I guess I can't blame Aberdeen Tap for that, can I? Although, I don't think anyone would have a problem if they had asked him to leave...
Anyways, this is a great little neighborhood bar. Comfortable and relaxed, with great beer, and daily specials. We tried the duck confit grinder and goat cheese salad, which were both great. The chee-vap platter was fair. The music / game is a little loud for a small space. But all in all everyone seems to have a great time there. Especially the guy at the next table over. Let's hope he isn't a regular, because I would like to be!
Great place tucked away on a quite street. Â The food and drink menu is diverse but not over done. Â This place has specialized in some really unique bar food that you won't find anywhere else. Â Good turn over in both food and drink menus means there is always something new to try.
Service is consistently good even when busy. Â Bar seems well staffed by experienced regulars. Â Staff is attentive and friendly.
The crowd seems to be an older and more mellow neighborhood set. Â 30s and 40s mostly, lots of times with dogs, and often with kids. Â Certainly not a frat or hipster scene which is a relief.
5-star bump! Met fellow Yelper, Dan G. here for an after work IPA (or four), and loved the huge beer list again (Lagunitas "Sucks", Rogue "Yellow Snow", Daisy Cutter). Service is done with a smile and we were well-attended to.
Gator Banger! As in an alligator "banger" (sausage) in a bun, smothered with a spicy brown remoulade that I would put on everything! It was excellent. I was told the steak fries were good, but the sweet potato tots were awesome!
The Aberdeen is on my commute home from work, and I'm looking forward to many future visits.
I never heard of the Aberdeen Tap until last Friday night when I was in the Fulton Market district for a gallery opening. Friends were there and we decided to join them for a nightcap.
Since I hadn't eaten since lunch and it was about 11:30 p.m., I was pretty hungry and the menu made me MUCH less sad than most bar menus. I stumbled upon a gator banger and emboldened by hunger and liquor, I decided I NEEDED to try it. Our waitress was incredibly awesome and when I asked about it, she was completely knowledgeable and sold the sh*t out of it without being sales-sleazy. I chose the sweet potato tots, because I am not one to ever pass up a tot, if I have the option.
Much to my dismay, gator was gone. I was sad, but switched gears to the lamb banger. Oh, it was good. So good. And the tots hit the spot. So much yum.
I'm in this area once a month, so I do plan on going back and I will for sure be chomping on a gator banger. They better stock up.
Went here for the first time on Monday night with my boyfriend after the Paramount Room was too crowded. This is a hidden gem, and I'm so glad we discovered it.
The Aberdeen Tap has a great draft list, and a really unique menu of delicious grinders, bangers (sausages) and sandwiches.
We started with the Mac and Cheese squares, which were little delicious hot gooey bites of cheese. Then for main course the Bangers and Grinders were $7 on Monday, so we decided on one of each. I had the Veal Banger with bacon and blue cheese sauce. It was absolutely delicious, especially with a side of sweet potato tot to cut the salty from the main course. My boyfriend had the Pulled Pork Grinder and Fries
The best part, though, was how friendly the staff was. The bartender / waiter was fantastic and very helpful with recommendations. Another staff member brought us out a little dish of cassoulet to try - the kitchen was experimenting with a new grinder an d they wanted us to try it. it was HEAVENLY - the most delicious little casserole of duck fat, white bean, gooey savory-ness.
We have a new favorite neighborhood watering hole - one with excellent food!
I really like this place! Chill, fun atmosphere, super friendly staff.
My friend lives pretty much next door, so I've been here a bunch of times. There is always some type of crowd. Â A nice, large patio in the summer, runs down half the block.
The mac and cheese squares are to die for. They have a great beer selection on tap and for bottles. It's the pinnacle of a neighborhood bar. I was really tired and lazy on Sunday, so I ended up going in my PJ pants. Not one strange look, I felt oddly comfortable. Definitley a good place to come and chill and drink on a lazy Sunday.
WINTER REVIEW = NO PATIO COMMENTS
Looking for that place where you can catch the game, dodge the hipsters in West Loop, get some good food, good beer, good service in an unptretentious setting? Â Well....keep looking, but you got close this time at Aberdeen Tap! Â What it has going for it is that it's a neighborhood bar. Â It's tucked away on a sleepy side street and you can always count on a mellow (but good sized) crowd milling about and extolling the virtues of the latest craft brewed 'who gives a shit' that everyone is drinking. Â
The setting is small; 50 seats or less. Â The beer list is LONG. Â Both on tap and on draft. Â Draft shows off about 20 - 25 beers. Â From 'Left Hand Milk Stout' to 'Lagunitas'. Â And on the bottle side the sky is the limit as the selection for those might reach into the 50 bottle range.
The food is creative and thoughtful bar food. Â The usuals are spared in favor of lamb sausage with parmesan, truffle giardianera, and fresh basil. Â While the Bratwurst is served with carmelized onions, spicy mustard, and potato strings. Â However, these sausages are impossible to eat. Â The bread they serve them in/with dictates that you're either going to look 20x more drunk than you are, or make an absolute mess out of yourself, or, most likely: Â BOTH. Â They also had wings, spring rolls, gator sausage, veal sausage, crawfish sausage, a large selection of sandwiches, appetizers, and even deserts.
Can't say anything about the outside patio as I went here in winter. The place is solid. Â The bartender was overworked and I noticed people waiting for stuff. Â It wasn't bad service, it was bad staffing. Â The guy was trying to run the whole restaurant by himself and did a pretty decent job considering the circumstances.
This is a great laid back place that feels miles away from the Suburban infested corridor that is Randolph. I'd easily go here again.
Just down the street form where I live, I am really starting to like this place. Lots of outdoor seating, unique menu, and reasonable prices on beers/booze. The Grinders are a bit pricey at $10 each (I have the Duck Confit grinder) but it was really tastey.... and while I would like it to be more of a $8 sandwich, I can't complain that much about spending $10...after all, it seems like just about everywhere is charging $10 for a burger these days.
Another big plus, GOOD MUSIC!!! Lots of Rock n' Roll! And the bartenders and servers all seem realy cool. Also, they run daily specials (except for Friday).
All in all, a great spot to hang with friends and have some drinks and a bite to eat....and they do have TV's to watch the game.
Another great yelp find! Â I was looking for something low key to catch up with friends while I was back in town for the weekend. Â It definitely exceeded my expectations! Â The beer selection, both tap and bottle, was great. Â Our server was very friendly and came by in frequent enough intervals. Â Further, the spot itself was low key like I wanted! Â The noise level wasn't too bad till later in the night and the prices were reasonable ($6 for the different beers I ordered and $7 for Grape S' J&Cs).
My friend drove in from the suburbs to meet up with me so the fairly easy street parking for her was a plus. Â Judging from the water bowl and the treat jar, this is also a dog friendly spot.
Another neighbourhood gem that I wished I frequented when I still lived in Chicago. Â I'm back often though, so I might still be a regular afterall!
I am happy to call Aberdeen Tap a neighborhood bar of mine. I didn't realize until mapping the location that it is less than a mile away from my place (can you tell I just moved?). This could change a few things from now on.
A note that I stayed here long enough the last time to check in twice - so I was a regular in one night. I enjoyed it that much. The bar tenders were awesomely attentive, conservative and generally made me want to hang around longer. Hence spending more than $250 between two of us. Yep that kind of evening.
I have to say the beer selection above average - just take a quick glance at their website. The neighborhood crowd makes for a breath-of-fresh-air atmosphere. I have ran the gauntlet in Wrigleyville so you can see where I am coming from.
Besides having all the great stuff noted above the food was pretty damn good. I had the duck confit (sausage style) grinder which was laced with garlic aioli and chimichurri sauce. Perfect compliment to all the booze that was flowing.
Later on a couple patrons joined us and we decided we couldn't deny crispy fried spring rolls with sweet thai chili sauce and the sweet potato tots with ranch. Two very good choices.
Great everything. Need I say more?
Comfortable in a neighborhood/location where 'comfort' doesn't spring to mind. Who knew the West Loop had neighborhood bars? Well, from the looks of all these reviews before mine, a lot of people. But, better late than never. I get it now: come for the beer and stay for the food.
First point of order in going to a bar, the brews. If a bar doesn't have a good selection, why does it exist and why are you patronizing it? Luckily for all involved, TAT has a fantastic selection of brews. I go back and forth between Daisy Cutter and Bell's Amber. [Slight point of order: I thought I remember being told, years ago, that Bell's couldn't be served/bought in Chicago. No?]
I do appreciate a good beer selection... and that brings me to my second point: the people pouring the beer and serving it to you are nice. Nice. As in, no attitude. It's such an added and unexpected bonus that I had to make mention of it. Again, I don't go to bars because the people who work there are nice. I go for the beer. Granted, I don't want to push spat upon, but if the bartender/waitress simply takes my order, brings me my beer and keeps it moving, I don't get bent out of shape. Here: smiles, eye contact, chit-chat. It makes a (positive) difference.
Thirdly, one should not go to a bar for food. You should go to a restaurant for food. Go to a bar to drink. If the bar has food, cool. If it has good food, great! TAT has good food! They're not reinventing the wheel or serving the essence of quail thoughts frozen at conception and served in an oversized Kangol. They serve food, good bar food: chicken wings, sweet potato tots (hello, somebody!), fried calamari, cevapcici, burgers, and grinders. We all know my beef issue, so I tend to stay away from the stuff. But, a winter weekend afternoon of Daisy Cutter, sweet potato tots with ranch dressing and a pork grinder really can't be beat.
Sweet potato tots with ranch dressing, people! I'm proud to be an American.
Mmmmm, Mmmm! Mama likes.
What a great new bar find! Not that I ever wanted our beloved Colleen to go away (NEVER!!), but what her departure, and the going away party to celebrate it, did was totally rock at introducing me to this fabulous, tucked away little gem.
Aberdeen excels in being a jack of all trades in the world 'o taps. Good bar scene, great food, amazing service. Quite the triumvirate! It's dark and sexy while still being fun and lively, they churn and burn PBR's as fast as they do champagne cocktails and the jukebox appears to always be set to "rad." You say random, I say rockin'. It's the perfect mix of all things awesome and it just works.
I've yet to try the food, but the folks at our party all looked pleased with their grub and Carol K, the Queen of Yelp, tells me they have awesome soup. Where Carol goes, I follow. Bring on the soup! Besides, they have cevapcici here... oh yeah, CEVAPS! That's bonafide verification that Aberdeen outshines its bar opposition.
Winning!
Save an Allagash for me, dear Aberdeen, I'll be back soon.
In a word?
Yes.
Yes to the dark wood, lots of seating and dim lighting.
Yes to the scrumptious champagne cocktails.
Yes to the impressive beer list.
Yes to the excellent tunes played on the jukebox.
Yes to the scrumptious bartender. Â (If you're reading this, I'm single.)
Yes to the barrage of cute guys that hang out here.
Just yes to everything.
I was already impressed by Aberdeen Tap's voluptuous beer list, but now I have to add their stellar food (sweet potato tots, battered mac 'n' cheese bites and juicy wings, to name a few items) and smiling service to the roster.
And, they can effortlessly (and flawlessly!) host a large group! Really, not a misstep in their game.
Aberdeen is the kind of bar that can suit any mood, any personality... take me, for example. One minute I was enjoying a cold Goose Island Sofie, and my next drink was champagne spiked with ginger liqueur. The crowd is easygoing, with a slightly older demographic which is great if you're over the age of 25.
Good stuff all around! Keep it up, Aberdeen.
Jennifer P kind of hits it right on thehead here: A bar with "people I don't feel like punching in the face."
Absolutely. Nary an inkling to smack, punch or kick anyone in this joint! Staff OR patrons! And frankly, its sort of a rarity. I rarely find a bar I want to stay awhile, and that is exactly what occurred when I visited Aberdeen Tap (formerly Peek-a-Boo) on a Friday night at around 930pm. Prime douching hour, at most bars....but Aberdeen remains chill, toasty and friendly.
Nestled on an unassuming corner station at Aberdeen Hubbard. A classic corner bar  that is well updated and boastin' a bountiful beer list. Plenty of tables, a supremely friendly and attentive staff (our server with red hair was a joy), and an above-average bar fare menu complete with "chee-vaps" sandwich, sweet potato tots, and much more.
ALLAGASH WHITE on draft!? Well, color me sunk into my seat for awhile, I'm staying.
The jukebox and easy, non-permit street parking are icing on the cake. Especially when you drink a few too many brews off the stellar list (why I thought Fin du Mond was a great idea when already pretty tipsy, who knows?) because you can leave your wheels parked nearby, take a responsible cab home, and trod back at anytime to fetch it. No beating the meter maids over here, folks!
A great bar. A great crowd. Wonderful service. A winner of a beer list and a menu that will keep most people quite satisfied.
And the best part? No violence inspired by inconsiderate behavior due to mass consumption of domestic light beer by the typical crowds in bars across the city. Though, they do have PBR for $3. For good measure.
