I wandered in on a rainy weekday rush hour with a craving for a dosa. Â The restaurant was empty (it had a few customers when I left). Â I ordered the dahi vada for an appetizer and the masala dosa. Â The vada was too firm and cold, and the overall taste of the dish was just okay - it needed a lot of tamarind chutney which is a bad sign. Â The huge dosa came out overcooked - not burned, but too dark. Â The masala vegetable filling was nice. Â I was very disappointed in the sambar and coconut chutney, which are of paramount importance when eating dosas! Â There was an orange-colored chutney (maybe Methi/Fenugreek?) which was pretty good. Â If the dosa and condiments had been top notch, this place would be the bargain of the century at $4.99 for the dosa. Â I give this establishment two stars for the few things that were okay and for the service, which was very friendly and attentive. Â With the multitude of Indian restaurants in the area, if you don't serve perfect food it's easy to go to other places that do!
Review Source:The service was good, even though the servers were the most knowledgable about the menu. Â Ordered, hyderabadi dum biryani chicken and mirchi ka salan, some pakora etc. The food was not to my mark. Felt a lot of spices/masala masking the actual taste of the items. Hyderabadi Dum Biryani was hopeless and gave me instant heart-burn. Pakoras seemed to have been re-fried couple of times and was way too oily.
- I would not go back unless management or cook changes.
Finished my shopping at Patel cash and carry and was feeling really hungry just saw abhiruchi and stepped in for lunch buffet. Awesome non veg stuff and to end with awesome gulab jamuns. Wow just thought it was one of the usual restaurants .... But to be frank food is little Hatke...!!
Review Source:We had dinner at this place a few days back. We wanted to give it a shot mainly due to good reviews and we had seen multiple branches in the area. Unfortunately, we were very disappointed.
The place is fairly clean. The waiters were very nice and courteous. Unfortunately, the food did not complement the service. The tomato soup I ordered had a very strong meaty (chickeny) taste to it. I couldn't take more than a couple of spoons of the soup. The rasam soup was better but was too thick for a traditional soup.
We then ordered the Gobi-65. While I have seen color additives added to this dish traditionally, this one seemed to be just fried in color instead of batter. The flavor as a result was too strong and was not as enjoyable. The other appetizer was decent, but too doughy.
Lastly, the main course - we ordered a Biryani and the "Vankaya Kura" given the "Andhra" background of the restaurant. Sadly, the biryani looked and tasted more like a pulav. It was essentially rice with the frozen mixed veggie pack dumped into it.
The saving grace was the naan, which was actually quite enjoyable. The kura had a good flavor, but the texture was a bit too grainy.
We did see a few other families seemingly enjoying their dosas. I've definitely tasted better fare in this area.
Ideally I would give it a 1.5 but bumping it up due to decent service and in the hope that may be the non-veg items are better. The low rating is mainly because of the unpleasant tastes of the foods I ordered and due to the excessive use of unnatural ingredients.
Had food at this place three times now in the past 6 months.
The set up is functional but clean. Servers are not dressed up, just regular clothes with a stubble, but here is the deal...its a pure eating joint...and the food speaks.
I have not tried everything on the menu, but let me tell you everything that I ate... rocks.
The hot samosas with the green chutney and the imli chatni. I think they prepare the green chatney in house. Lip smacking!
The shrimp masala....yummy!
The dosas and mini idli's with sambar
The chicken biryani.
Will update you as I frequent them some more.
The owners are also very friendly.
Would have given it 5stars if not for the ambience and servers.
What a feast we enjoyed tonight with very friendly service.  I always start with vegetable samosas as a test.  These were fresh, hot, crisp, and the filling of peas, potatoes, and spices was perfect. I ordered the  Vegetarian Thali platter, and was  amazed at its size.  It came with 2 curries (one was chana masala and the other, an unfamiliar vegetable curry), sambar, rice, dal, nan, yogurt, and gulab jamun. There was a lot of food, and  I took home half to enjoy another night.  My husband had chicken vindaloo, which was in a lovely, non-greasy sauce.  There was a lot of activity in the restaurant.  Lots of folks were coming in to collect their take-out orders.  All in all, a perfectly delicious meal in a pleasant atmosphere. Looking forward to our return.
Review Source:I used to like this place, rated it as one of the best in my previous review..
but of late, my experience has been abysmal.. the food i ordered was dry and tasteless. The service was poor, the waiter had difficulty understanding me.
I would not recommend this place any more. It is cheap, definitely. But not worth it.
Very good Indian food. The best on Rt. 27, unless you go to Udipi for vegetarian. The buffet is cheap, and more varied than most Indian buffets around, and the dosas are great. The dishes here do not use the same sauce over and over with minor variations. Each curry is different - which obviously makes for a more interesting and enjoyable experience. Ginger Shrimp is great, and any of the Lamb Dishes. I also love the Vegetable Korma. Sure, there is better Indian food up on Oak Tree, but this will do, in a fix.
As other posters have suggested, the place is also a little messy. So if that's gonna bother you...
I've been avoiding this place for more than year; mostly for the looks and a sub-par lunch buffet experience long long time ago. Well, I went there last week for dinner. Looks remain substandard, the waiters are not dressed properly; except one, nobody really talks well, below average decor. Â What appears to be a sub-leased facility on the side inside the dining room -- Â an Indian sweet stall -- Â sported a hand-written notice "No Refundable for Snacks and Sweets!" :)
But  I soon realized that they are super efficient. My order was taken in record time. The waiter was very attentive and detail oriented. The facility is neat and clean.  As I was sitting there, the decor, the sweet stall on the side, the ill written notice, the shabby clothed waiters and manager etc became part of  a different ambience; it was as if I was having a meal in a "Dhaba" - an Indian highway restaurant. It also made a statement of innocence on the part of the restaurant management!
The food brought another surprise. Everything tasted great. The shrimp Masala was heavenly. Biriyani was delicious. Â Chicken 65, an appetizer, deep fried marinated chunks of chicken (may not be very healthy) was crispy and moist at the same time.
The experience was topped off by a pocket friendly check at the end. I will go back again.
Abhiruchi has pretty good Indian food. We always order takeout from here and have never been disappointed.
The samosa appetizer and tandoori chicken appetizer are good. I loveee the tamarind chutney that comes with the samosas and always request extra. We also always order Palak Paneer and Chicken Tikka Masala--delicious! The regular naan is the best and we use it for dipping into both sauces. White rice is well-cooked and a great accompaniment to the entrees we order as well. Recommended for great Indian take-out in the area.
My experience at Abhiruchi has always been good. The price is reasonable. Weekend lunch buffets are quite decent and serve a variety of items. The taste of the food is also good.I like the curry prawn and the chicken biryani at this place. Certainly you'd get food better than this place. But the food quality and the price is good.
The negative points about this place are:
-when too much crowded, the service is really bad.you'll have to wait really ling even to get your glass refilled with water.
-the waiters wear really shabby clothes.I'd definitely like waiters to be dressed up in clean attires
They have GREAT dosas... Â
Am a big dosa fan and this tastes like dosas made in India. Â
Very authentic
There are carrots and peas in the potato masala filling and the cost and the quantity is nice and big. Â It can be a bit too spicy though (and that's great)- so if you're not a spice fan- ask for mild.
They have great thalis too-- very large and tasty. Â
Priced right- great food.
If you've been looking for authentic Indian, look no further.
This is the sister store to the Iselin location.
We had planned to go to Mie Thai, but they were shuttered. Â Wait--what is that? Â The neon sign was partially lit and said Abrhiru. Â I waited in the car, Jim went in, noticed it was a place we'd like, and got me from the car.
Warmly welcomed in, seated immediately. Â All of the other patrons were Indian, and throughout the night we noticed more things we wanted to try but didn't know the name of (what were those fried rolled things that almost looked like combos? Â what is the name of that enormous crepe like naan served folded and with a million little sauces?). Â Needless to say, we'll be back. Â Also, spicy is spicy. Â Not first bite spicy, but the type that builds up and causes a nice, warming glow or sheen.
Onto the food:
Gobi: bright red fried fritters which looked liked tons of little twigs, some intertwined, others in small piles. Â Served with a tomato based sauce and a tahini type sauce. Â Initially, I wanted it hotter, then the heat started building. Â Not at all greasy.
Entrees come with either rice or naan, so we got one of each.
Lamb (gosht) saag: not on the menu, but they made it. Â Perfectly tender chunks of braised lamb with a tumeric heavy spinach sauce. Â So I had a chunk of ginger and Jim got a piece of clove. Â A minor annoyance as we ate the whole thing. Â Including with a spoon to get out the last bits after we finished off the non-greasy but perfectly puffed and lightly charred naan.
Okra Masala: Tender and flavourful. Â The way it ought to be, and the type we missed. Â This too was finished off on the rice, which was plain and a welcome accompaniment to the spicy and oily toppings.
Raita: very fresh and pungent--lots of onions and chives, a great cooler to the spicy entrees. Â Chunky.
I would have to say that this is the closest to home made Indian food we have had in such a long time. Â Fresh, pungent, well balanced.
Friendly and attentive service.
And here's the kicker: $30.46 including tax, before tip. Â
We can't wait to go back to try the things we saw other people eating as well as just about anything else on the menu. Â It was so very good, and friendly, attentive without being annoying. Â We really can't get over finally getting spicy Indian again. Â Fresh too. Â Friendly service. Â And inexpensive!
Update 2/13/09:
We believe that we found our Tomo Sushi of Indian food.
We returned tonight to try a dosa--the ginormous crepes with a bunch of dipping sauces. Â As we remain clueless, we opted for the South Indian Combo with Gosht Saagwalla (Lamb Saag). Â Medium here is hot--even the resident expert at my husband's workplace agreed that medium is what she orders here (as opposed to being disappointed with HOT HOT HOT PLEASE at our local places).
The first plate had 3 sauces and 2 bread-like items:
Sauce 1: Thinner red curry/onion, almost like a soup.
Sauce 2: Deep red paste, with a heat that bites you in a few minutes. Â My favourite.
Sauce 3: Tahini-like, with spice
Bread 1: We believe that this was the fermented lentil bread; doughy, but immediately disintegrated with the sauces
Bread 2: Fried, spicy doughnut. Â Jim liked this. Â
Crepe--imagine an 18" crepe rolled up, neither sweet nor bland, but we couldn't figure out the flavour, only that it was good. Â In the center was a mixture of potatoes, peas, carrots, and spices--similar to what is inside a samosa.
We decided that it would be okay to alternate eating the saag with both the crepe and the naan. Â The crepe had some crispy parts, others chewy, but was fun. Â And tastey.
Again, we ate until we were bursting and had to ask for a container to take the raita home.
Total? Â $23 before tip. Â
Yum yum yum
It wasn't that busy yet (6:30), but we're planning on going at a busier time when we return so that we can point at what others have ordered to try more menu items.
