Just watched my favorite bartender at my favorite bar clean his wound with gin. Doug is the toughest man in town, and the best bartender around.

Walked in here with two friends (others were on their way) for my Birthday. 5 people were at the bar. Bartender gave us the evil eye then proceeded to STARE AT THE WALL to ignore us. Not sure if he was drunk or just did not like that we were in our late 20's not 50's. After a few tries of getting him to speak a patron turned around and said "would you like me to check ID's for you" Are you serious?????? Bartender never said a word and acted like we were invisible when we were 4ft away. So after a few failed attempts we took our business down to Lallas and said screw that place. HOW RUDE! In case the owner of this place cares whoever your bartender was on 9/12 (Wed. night) is a total prick. Loved this quiet little place from my other visits (different bartenders) but after that experience none of us will be back.

This is a very specific bar. Go here if you want:

    -Cheap drinks
    -Darkness
    -An older crowd
    -A no nonsense bartender
-Room to move around and (usually) sit

Do not go here if you are looking for:

    -Dancing
-People under the age of 30
    -Complicated or trendy cocktails
-A vast selection of high end liquors, beer or wines

This is a no-nonsense cantina that pours generous drinks. Per other reviews, this is exactly what you want if you seek a dark, cozy and friendly watering hole. One drawback: cash only (but there is an ATM).

What a great bar, went on a recent visit with a friend that lives in the area.......it was weird in a really good way.......thought I had stepped into a time 1974 time warp, found myself waiting for my Father to come out from around the corner at any moment......the place is pretty much no frills and could have been a Bar in Goodfella's and with atmosphere is what makes this place special.

Great place to go. Drinks are cheap and stiff and the bar is dark and cozy. People watching is my favorite, and there's plenty of it here. Just remember it's cash only.

I've tried to give myself some time to digest my trip to Alfredo's. It's sort of like a "what just happened?" sort of thing going on.

I mean, I guess it was partly my fault. We started early (4PM). The place was super dark, as everyone noted, and super quiet. There was one other touristy couple and three or four die-hard regulars. Divey doesn't even BEGIN to describe this place. After the bartender brought us our margaritas (clearly we were in the wrong place, haha) he offered us some of the salmon wrapped in foil nearby ("it was swimmin' this mornin'!")

My drink wasn't good, but I didn't tell him exactly what I wanted in it. But the salmon was the most delicious fish I've eaten in California. But it was a bar I'd be scared to go in alone. But it was the least pretentious bar in Monterey.

Three stars because I still don't know if I hated it or loved it.

    Also, NO CREDIT CARDS.

Like the atmosphere for what it is, but other than that, never have a real desire to go again.  I like the atmosphere in bars, and when a bartender is a complete jackass to me and states that  'I have to make up my mind"  and points out that he has a "BAR to run" ?? Not a place I really want to chill and hang out at anymore.

How do I love thee, Alfredo's? Let me count the ways!

This bar is EXACTLY what every bar should be. For one, it's dark. I love me a dark bar. Better yet, I love a clean, dark bar with strategic lighting and Alfredo's has it down pat. My other "must have" when it comes to a bar is great bartenders and friendly locals. Again, Alfredo's does not disappoint.

My man and I are on the peninsula, enjoying a nice, extended holiday. Beach walks and sightseeing have been great and our hotel is comfy but once in a while you just need to get out someplace, have a good beer and hangout with some new people. Alfredo's has been our go-to spot on a couple of occasions now. The first visit, on a Sunday night, was a  busy night at the bar. While the rest of the downtown area looked pretty quiet, Alfredo's was hopping! Despite it being busy, the bartender greeted us promptly and with a smile. We grabbed some seats at the fireplace and kicked back to watch the crowd. It was a diverse mix of all ages and everyone seemed to be having a great time. There was a lot of laughter in the air. We'd had a long day so we finished up our second (inexpensive!) Stella and walked the two blocks back to our hotel. Successful night number one.

On our second visit (just last night!), we walked into a much different (but even more fun!) environment. The bar was crowded with friendly locals and the owner, Doug, was behind the bar keeping the drinks and stories flowing! We conversed with a local attorney, a Castroville bartender with a knack for baseball stats, and a variety of other diverse and  fun folks! We were welcomed by each and every one of them and had a truly memorable evening. We are even contemplating extending our trip for a couple of days so that we can enjoy the Superbowl party complete with delicious sounding potluck dinner!

Oh how I wish Alfredo's was in Long Beach! It is truly the ideal neighborhood bar set in one of the most gorgeous little cities on the planet. If you are in the area, you owe it to yourself to stop in and absorb some of the local flavor.

Great location (near downtown but not on the Alvarado scene), great service (Chuck is a gentleman and a scholar), great drinks and very comfortable.  Mellow, warm, dim and all-around inviting.  I hope Alfredo's keeps doing exactly what it's doing now for a long, long time.

Best bar in Monterey. Stiff drinks. Affordable.

    Hands-down, five stars. All around.

Our experience started when we called in on a Wednesday night, to see if they'd be open late. Chuck told us to come by, they'd keep it open, usually don't close up until midnight or when people start leaving. That was our first tip in the right direction.

Getting there, it looked closed. Inside, it looked like snow lodge meets local bar meets dark cave. It was warm and cozy, with comfortable seating (other bars take note: their chairs and couches were legitimately relaxing), a fireplace, intimate seating. Further, the crowd was fantastic - a happy group, not rowdy, laughing, laidback, etc. The only bad eggs were a couple that completely embarrassed themselves by causing a scene, but they were kicked out (thank goodness). Drinks were good - strong and cheap, and service was impeccable.

We stayed two nights in Monterey and chose our second hotel based on its nearness to Alfredo's. Obviously, we had an amazing time and would be bar locals ourselves if we lived there. :-)

This bar is what bar dreams are made of: locals, strong stiff drinks, great bartender, dark and cavernous setting.

I have seen little (emphasis on little) Alfredo's go from empty old locals bar to a hot spot! I just love that we have somewhere to go near Alvarado that isn't a) crowded b) ghetto c) expensive. This is the perfect little bar. You can always get a seat, the drinks are cheap and it is perpetually dark in there! Support this little bar so it never goes away!

You've been magnetically hurled through the uninspired downtown of Monterey, full of its pretense, pomp and price.  Repelled and repulsed to unexplored corners you thirstily wander in the night, and then perchance upon an odd building; a structure of non-conformance and antiquity.  A placard states that it's not earthquake safe, but yet here it is.  Still standing after all the years.
You decide to step in anyway.
Dark, darker, darkerer.  Down the honey badger hole.  It's more night in here than it is outside. Your eyes rapidly try to adjust.  A pre-smoking ban aroma slightly permeates the air as well as wet and raspy banter.  It does feel like you've stepped back in time or more precisely, sideways, then back.  Fernado's Hideaway anyone?  No, it's Alfredo's, Fernado's half-brother.
It's no use.  Your eyes just give up with trying to adjust.  You slowly walk with your arms extended lowly and swaying.  Only one seat left at the bar and you've somehow claimed it.
The clientele gets a once over and without much analysis you know that you are in league with some of the best professional drinkers in the region.
Your first cocktail is strong and cheap.  It goes down fast  which gets a few knowing glances when the bartender is back to your spot sooner than he expected.   Second one in hand, you are half way done when you realize pacing is key.  Your neighbors see your libating prowess and strike the matchbook of conversation.  Good ol' folk that know the importance of community even if it's centered around a bottle.
The place is filling up and juke box selections are made.  Drink #3 is purchased for you by your newest best friend.  You are being told a story about cream cheese however you are really imagining what life would be like in that tiny fishing village mounted behind the bar.  Which building is the foot massage spa? How far is your house from the watering hole?  Who was supposedly watching lil' Timmy when he jumped off the dock and into a tumbler of gin?  You buy #4 and return the favor of a drink and a story of your own, embellished to hell.
You don't remember ordering another drink but there it is.  Deemed your last since you almost walked through the large walled mirror to check out "the other room".
During the cab ride home you have voted Alfredo's the best place to be unsober in a dark room for your annual drinker's choice award which exists only in your pickled mind.  You'll be back soon.

Im a local..got to say I really like this place...dimly lit, little gothic like..but very relaxing! I don't care what anyone says..I've met all of the bartenders..they are usually very nice..Doug, Chuck, Matt, Fran (when they were there). I can't complain...I understand..they can have attitudes sometimes...but seeing some of the clientele they have to deal with..I'd have an attitude too! But really all in all..it's a great bar, not a club scene which i love!

Alfredo's is my favorite. I've always been a whiskey girl at heart and this bar has the best (visible) selection in town.

I came here for my birthday in mid-October after a handful of visits. The prices are low and the dim atmosphere is oddly cozy. I didn't play dice nor did I try to hijack the jukebox this time, but I did admire the 60's decor and the lack of other females in the room.

Call me the antichrist, but I love being the only girl in a bar. For some reason, men seem to love a girl that knows her whiskey. Between the occasion of my birthday and the company in the bar, I never paid for a single drink. Glenfidditch, Maker's Mark, Buffalo Trace, and a shot of Patron with the bartender.

The other memorable occasion of the evening occurred when one of the customers tried to beat up the bartender.

Yet more proof why Alfredo's is the best bar in Monterey.

It is always dark here.  Depending on the day it can also be really loud or not.  The building itself is nice, but not my favorite bar to go to.

Hadn't set foot in this place in a decade, but dropped in with a couple friends last weekend. Nice interior; warmer & fuzzier than your average Monterey bar without being cloying. Nice fireplace, good service, and perhaps most importantly, they pour a good drink.

This place is just what I like. It old, dark and great bartender. Matt!!! This place really gives you a feel of old town. The entire building is stone and if I am not mistaken it is built over a hole?? Maybe the last time I went here I had to many martinis and I made that part up. Anyways, I will be back for sure and I think that this place will do just fine.

2nd night in a row here and man was it happening last night.  The place was jam packed with an interesting crowd... a lot of young ones... what the heack?  I loved going here because of the older (50+) crowd... love hearing their stories and learning about the local history.  Matt is one of the bartenders there who I've gotten to know over the last two nights... nice guy!

Love me some Fredos. Nothining is creepier than this bar...(other than maybe Sagovias)...and its just is what it is. The picture of Joe Montana on the wall framed was a huge selling point for me. I am not a fan or anything...I just thought it was awesome. I try and go as often as i can.

This is my new favorite joint in the great state of California.

We traveled down to Monterey for a Valentine's Day getaway.  Once we got settled in at the hotel and had some snacks, we decided to look for places to go get another cocktail.  There were about 17 brochures and books in the room on Monterey, so I grabbed one and flipped to the first "Bars & Nightlife" section.  I wish I had kept the article!  The places were listed in alphabetical order. First one: Alfredo's.

    Here was the description:
"ALFREDO'S: Famed as a last-stop nightcap spot, this downtown watering hole, in one of the oldest surviving buildings in Monterey, dishes out fancy-free drinks with old-school service to a faithful blue-collar crowd while classic rock blares from a jukebox. A cozy dive."

    I'm sold.

So we pop in there, and there were only a couple other folks hanging out. We recognized a woman that we'd met working at a bar earlier, and I remembered her name.

I timidly asked the bartender (Matt) if they had Fernet (I love Fernet, but it's hard to find in Sacramento, and I never expect any joints to have it).  Not only did Alfredo's deliver, but Matt said that it was his drink of choice as well, and we proceeded to share an entire bottle!

The downside of the evening was after becoming loyal patrons, a pub crawl tornadoed through - maybe 20 people?  Even with their chaotic rambunctious behavior, Matt managed to whip out bloody mary's for them like a PRO!  We tried to wait it out and see if they'd leave after one drink, but it was the end of the night for them (and for us) - it was too loud to even think.

I love the dim lighting.  I love that Matt had just met us, but gave us free drinks for our anniversary.

Thank you, Alfredo's, for making a wonderful evening for us.  I would return to Monterey again just to come here.

Stumbling around local Yelp and thought it was funny to see 'Fredo's listed here, our local dive bar! Every town has one (or more). Yes, they still smoke in here, yes you'll get a dirty look or two from the barkeep when you're out of town group stumbles in. But the drinks are strong and the fire is warm and there's no Jarhead's looking to steal your girlfriend on a Saturday night. If you want the latter, head for the Mucky Duck.

New Year's eve 2009...good riddance and hello twenty-ten!!!!!  Fantastic night of alcohol-induced merriment and revelry and suddenly realized that we're walking down the street and it's a quarter to midnight!  Caught up in the moment and too late to cab it anywhere, we popped into the nearest bar...yup, believe it or not, we ended up at Alfredo's Cantina for the new year's countdown...WTH?!!!

Actually, it worked out just fine.  Bartender (owner?) was super cool to us, there was no line, and everyone was super friendly.  Although I would have preferred something a little more upscale, it turned out to be a great place to welcome in the new year.  After all the craziness of the past year, it was comforting to be in a semi-mellow environment.

Great little locals' dive bar...will definitely be back.  Happy, Happy New Year to all!!!!!

Locals spot, but if you're going to go someplace outside of the box give it a go. We went because the family owned bar was a friend of a friend's family. We had City written all over our foreheads and as soon as we walked in it got real quiet. Is that going to stop us...nope. We're pretty chatty so we ended up talking to a couple of the people at the bar. It's a real low key and dark place to go if you're in the area and wanting a cheap stiff drink. Cash only so credit cards only "look pretty"

I agree with Josh. The bartenders can be pretty overbearing sometimes.  Deirdre is great though and it's a great place to go if you don't want to deal with tourists. The inside is kinda shady and not a lot of light. Very vintage like that. And I love it. Very liberal with the alcoholin mixed drinks.

The only reason that I didn't drop 5 stars on this little gem is because one of the bartenders there absolutely sucks. She is a total wet blanket and pretty much runs out anyone trying to have fun. I know the owner of this place and am going to let him know that she is costing him thousands. If you roll through and see some middle aged hag (female type) wearing a lame 80's vest, turn around and walk out

If you're looking for a place where the locals go to drink without the swarm of tourists, this is the spot. Drinks are strong, fireplace is cool as are the bartenders and I love the jukebox. Just a block away from Alvarado street.
