Service is never anything to write home about, however, it is/was by no means bad. Food, as always is nothing more than "fine". Not great, not bad. Food arrives at the table fairly quickly just as menu describes. Maybe priced a bit high, always dark inside with rock hard chairs the AB&G has become an institution in Allendale as it's been there since the dawn of time. It's basically the only bar in town.
Review Source:I don't like to give five stars to anyone unless I'm sure that they deserve it.
I've eaten at ABG at least 30 times and they win for consistency and taste.
They have excellent buffalo chicken wraps, French dips, and French fries. The burgers are okay.
Big plus for the very nice waitresses (most of the time) and they usually get the orders out relatively quick. Also, a big plus for the popcorn while you wait for your dinner.
Watch out though, you may want to avoid this place on a football night, it gets very loud and cramped. The seating is poor, you often feel like your sitting on top of other people and usually the tables are lopsided.
Overall, the food is above average and usually so is the service. Great place to check out if you're a local, you won't be disappointed.
This is a LANDMARK... we were in Wyoming and said we lived in NJ...and they asked if we heard of AB&G!!! Â It's the best pub grub you can get... amazing burgers and steaks... been there on pasta night and love their Sunday Brunch.. a fun "Cheers" type of crowd... but they also have specials and try to keep menu upgraded and new. Â For locals, it's the place to be... awesome neighborhood pub... and the owners want to be sure you are happy!!!
Review Source:Do NOT go to the bar up stairs. Â No fault of the male bar tenders. They are great. Â It is the females that have a permanent period. Â Slamming down tickets, glasses and making a scene. Â Not very professional at all. We had glasses of wine which were great. The ambiance is lacking big time.
Review Source:Excellent value. Food is good and prices are low. Beer selections are adequate as well and they often have Defiant. We eat here weekly. Weekdays are special days like pasta Tuesdays and I can't remember the rest. Little noisy and always busy but that says something about the quality. 6ish on a Friday is usually a good time. Menu is limited to pub food and the specials are the entrees. Very casual and relaxed. Would like more choices for entrees and more comfortable chairs.
Review Source:This place was underwhelming all the way. The atmosphere is tired and the patrons looked tired too. Â
I will say that their steamed clams were good. Â That's where it stopped. My spinach salad with shrimp looked like it was literally thrown together, complete with insanely dry shredded cheese from a bag (mozz? provolone? anyone? anyone?) cherry tomatoes that were on the verge of being past their prime, burnt bacon pieces, and shrimp that was charred way too much. Â My man ordered the chicken burger special. Â It was served on a stale-looking kaiser roll instead of the advertised English muffin. The fries looked overcooked to me but he said they were okay. "Okay" in his world means "these calories are not worth it". Â The presentation of our food left a lot to be desired.
Our table was handled by so many servers and runners that we had no idea who our main server was. Â And my ass was killing me from their rock-hard chairs.
I would recommend visiting a diner over the ABG.
Not My Kind Of Place  Pricey Drinks
Stopped in for a quick beer and shot, $12 not sure why it's so expensive but I think for the atmosphere and divey nature of this place it would have been considerably cheaper. The menu looked decent but due to the look and feel of this run down establishment I would take a pass.
Kind of like a old man bar, that uses cheep call liquors with a very limited selection of the good stuff. Bartender was nice but the place was cold and dark even on a beautiful day, very depressing and gloomy with uncomfortable seating.
Pass
the AB & G will always hold a place in my heart. Â my friends all worked there throughout high school, and this is the local bar everyone goes to when they are back in town for the holidays or whatever else..tear.
as for the food, pretty standard bar options, although the buffalo calamari is awesome and worth going for! i've had salads, veggie burgers, wraps all decent but nothing worth really describing.
it's a good place to grab a quick bite or if you want to watch a game. they have a huge projection screen and a bunch of other small tv's too. service is always good so no complaints there either.
I have never dine in here before but I did have quite of bit of take out from here and overall the food is good and I definitely do recommend their clam chowder which is just full of flavor. I definitely recommend giving this place a try if your in the area if not its not really worth the trip.
Review Source:3 Stars...the third is for the buffalo calamari.
Honestly, every time I go here (3-4 times now) I go in with optimism but I am ALWAYS disappointed...Salad I had here--disappointing...burger I had last night---VERY disappointing--overcooked, burnt, served without any pickles, onions, tomatoes, or lettuce? Â Come on man, if this place is "known for its burgers" I was expecting A REAL BURGER with all the accoutrements and cooked to order.....no luck.
I don't know what else to try here, but frankly, I have never been blown away. The reviews on here are so favorable, and I really can not understand why.
Next time, if there is a next time, I might just stick to the wings.
This is review is based on the excellent service we received. The owner/manager (?) Chris is a real gem. We called in advance to see if they would be playing a specific football game with sound, and they agreed to do it. When we got to the bar, they put the tv on with sound as promised. Even after a couple of suspicious looking patrons complained about the volume, Chris made sure we were comfortable and that the volume was turned up after they left. As far as the food goes, we had appetizers and shared a taco salad. The salad was GREAT! It's rare you find a bar that serves grilled chicken that doesn't have a slight game-y taste to it, so they also get props for that.
Review Source:Let me start off with the positives first. Â Friendly waitress, free popcorn, nice selection of beers on draft. Â Now the negatives. Â The place was a dump. Â I was there with my parents, sister and her 9 month old, and they brought us out a high chair. Â The high chair was filthy and needed to be cloroxed. Â Also the table was sticky and nasty. Â I literally needed a shower after I left the place. Â I know it is not a 5 star restaurant, but a little cleaning would help this place out greatly.
Review Source:It's still a great place, but I must update.
Went here tonight with a few friends, and I must admit something- the burgers and turkey burgers are awesome, but the pasta dishes are not. Â They said it was rigatoni, and it wasn't, and the sauce was runny, and I was not a fan. Â Otherwise, everything was good, but stick with what is good, and what people recommend. Â Do not stray. Â Do not go to pasta.
So, they best part about this place was the fact that I saw Sirius Satallite radio personality Scott Ferrell here. I know, you are saying... "who the fuck is Scott Ferrell?" If you listen to the Howard Stern Channels, you know. Otherwise, don't worry about it.
Wonder why I just went off on a tangent about some radio guy? B/c that was about the only thing good here. The place was EXTREMELY overcrowded and loud. I had to wait about an hour to be seated and when I was finally seated, I had people standing all around me waiting for their own tables. I don't know about you but I would prefer not to have some random drunk shithead's ass in my face while I eat crappy buffalo wings.
AB+G is a great place to go for a Friday night/Saturday night casual dinner. It's a pretty big place, with a good-sized bar and eating area directly behind. I went there on a Saturday night with 3 other people for dinner, and the wait was EXTREME (45 minutes). Luckily, someone else's party left and we were able to swoop in.
The bar had a good vibe and had some good beers on tap. The vibe was loud and it's a fun place to go to. Service was excellent, and the food was VERY good. I ordered the Buffalo Chicken Wrap with Nachos for appetizer (with Chicken). The nachos were HUGE, and we all ate it up CLEAN. DONE. FINITO.
The Buffalo Chicken Wrap was delicious, among the best I've tried in my life. Nice kick to it, soft chicken, great size, and steak fries on the side.
AB+G is a fun place to hit up for a nice, casual weekend dinner if you want a laid-back, fun feel.
Went for brunch/lunch on a Sunday.  Was very  impressed with the ABC, especially considering its high end community.  The food was prepared well and the prices were fair.  A great local spot to grab a bite to eat with a genuine 1960's décor to boot!
As to the food: Â two of us in our group had burgers. Â They were cooked perfectly medium, I was very happy about that. Â The size was good and the presentation was very nice. Â The side of fries was nothing sensational but perfectly acceptable. Â Two others in our group had the buffet. Â The selection looked good and the reviews were good. Â
Will definitely be back when in the area for a good quality and reasonably priced meal.
This has been one of my favorite places for 40 years. Â The food is consistently great, and there is a wide variety of things to eat. Â They are flexible and accommodating with the menu. Â Great burgers, steaks; Â I've always loved the fried shrimp. Â The waitstaff has always been helpful and friendly.
I'll also add that tonight they sat my disabled mother immediately without being asked, even though they had to give up a 6-top to a party of 2. Â That's the sort of place it is.
Great food and service but not recommended for groups or people trying to avoid children. Do not be fooled just because there is the word "Bar" in the title this is a very family friendly establishment.
This is great if you have kids, not great if you don't like kids.
I made reservations for a party of 10 about two to three weeks in advanced. I asked them for a room with some privacy for my party. We were placed in a small area that didn't have a fourth wall. If you had to go to the bathroom everyone else had to get up to let you by if you were sat on one side of the table the other side of the table was fine as long as the other tables remain unoccupied.
There were also two more tables in the area we were seated. They tried to seat a group of 4 behind us and that group tried it for about a minute then asked to be moved. Thankfully we came in when they were not that busy so this only happened once. If the place was packed this would have been for everyone.
Back to the children. Most of them were well behaved but as more and more families came in the odds we're we would get one set of bad kids. One family had children that were screaming, throwing food, and jumping out of their chairs.
I like the place the food was great and yes I'd eat there again. But I would take pause before I assumed I could arrange to have a semi-private undisturbed dinner with my friends.
I am a very big fan of simple food. Food without an ego, food for common folk such as myself. I like it when I read something off the menu and say to myself, "Ah, yes. That sounds good " -- never seen it before, don't know why I want it, but I want it anyway. When a place can turn the humble sandwich, take it a step further and turn it into a fulfilling dinner, it wins in my book. And besides, they have such a catchy acronym as well, AB&G.
Nice wait staff, speedy service, simple, straight-forward and affordable menu. If I'm around town, I'll definitely stop by again.
Friendly service, tasty food, good sweet potato fries, great bar in old original building - what more could I ask for? Â Nothing. Â I'm here with my family (including 2 little ones) once a week. Â The kids are nuts about the popcorn machine and always split the ubiquitous kids' pasta. Â I love the grilled chicken sammy, and hubby usually does a salad.
With Chef Pierre and crew manning the kitchen, I'd really love to see some Caribbean dishes on the huge nightly specials page, but I really can't complain.
So glad to have a neighborhood pub like this nearby.
The first time I've visited outside of the Oktoberfest celebrations, I was a little underwhelmed. A huge menu, but nothing on it sounded special. In my opinion, paring down the menu from 70/80 to 20/30 items, and being more descriptive would be an improvement. Even the specials of the day fill another sheet of paper. If you have 20 specials, how can they all be special? Still, the place has a great atmosphere.
I had fish and chips: the fish was beautiful, fresh, and tender, but the batter was not crispy/crunchy, but soft & spongey. The chips (actually, small potato wedges) were good, and well-seasoned.
Disclaimer...I've only been to ABG once and only for lunch (no booze) so this review is likely somewhat different than the others. Â
Allendale Bar and Grill is a pub. Â They have pub food. Â It's good pub food. Â I ordered a caesar salad with grilled shrimp and it was quite good. Â I thought the ambiance was so-so...Kind of cold and dark but I think that was my feeling mostly because it was a beautiful sunny day out when I was there. Â The service was friendly and speedy and my soda was refilled without me asking. Â The prices were decent for what you get. Â I'll definitely be back but I think next time I'll be having a beer...
Where do I begin--
My mother moved to Allendale a few years ago, and I was newly out of college. Within walking distance was, you guessed it, the AB &G. This place is a great townie bar, usually empty, but normally with three or four townie people sipping beers into the later hours.
Food wise is where I've lost stars. A ton of people seem to think it's good, and it is passable in my opinion, just bland-ish. But, in all serious, I'm not a huge fan of fried pub fare, but i've found it even with their healthier dishes.
My recommendation? Never skip the pub. This just isn't the best one I've ever been to.
I met my wife here for lunch on her bday. Â She says she comes here all the time with vendors and loves the place. Â I trust my wife's taste (as should all husbands) and wasn't disappointed. Â Service was great. Â I had the Tuesday's special Pasta Du Jour and I say it was gOOd. Â Served piping hot with angus beef and roasted peppers, mushrooms, and garlic bread. Â My wife had a Tuesday special burger w/ sweet potato fries and man that was good too. Â I forget exactly what type of burger it was. Â If I worked in Allendale, I'd eat here EVERYDAY. Â Forget eating healthy! Â I like the tavern feel to the place. Â There's tons of seating too.
Review Source:I love this place! Â Lots of space and homey sort of decor, great food with huge portions, and very very reasonable prices. Â I mean this is NJ so things are more reasonable in general, but still..awesome. Â I also have been on a recent kick for sweet potato fries and this place has good ones. Â and great burgers and sandwiches.
