I've been going to Angelos for almost 5 years -- the place has been here for more than 20. It's run by Angel Linares, a fieplug-shaped man of proud Aztec heritage. He is 79 or 80, and does it all: cooks, serves, washes dishes, take your money.

Every meal is prepared in front of you. Let me describe how he makes the steak tacos:

He pulls a large New York Strip from the fridge, and cuts it into chunks and puts it on the grill with some onions. While it's cooking, he makes the guacamole that he serves with it, and the fried potatos (or beans upon request). He also makes your Salsa. It's $11 and worth every penny. Every morsel of it is delicious.

He grinds his own ground beef, and his $5 hamburgers are the biggest and most delicious in town. Beware of ordering the full-size Mexican omelet ($8) unless you bring another person to share it with you. It, too, is splendid.

Everything at Angelos is fresh, simple and delicious. He makes everything from scratch right in front of you (except he doesn't make the corn tortillas).

And while he cooks, he'll lecture you in Aztec Archie Bunker fashion, as he humorously explains how Aztecs are superior to their northern cousins, the Caucasians, is just about every respect. The guy is a marvel of knowledge, culinary skill and public relations. He has customers who've been eating there every day for 20 years.

One thing: set aside a little time when you go there. He'll warn you that he does NOT prepare fast food -- he makes slow food. If you want it fast, he'll banish you to "Taco Hell."

This place is an incredible find. (Unfortunately he has been ill recently; it might be closed until he recuperates).

I went to Angelo's for lunch today. The food was incredible. The best Mexican I've had in Roanoke! The portions we large and everything is served hot, medium or mild. I ordered the hot Huevos rancheros it had great flavor. The only downfall is the size sits about ten at the bar and has two very small tables. It is cash only and no alcohol but the food is a must try!!!
